How The Libertines got it together to make their fourth album
More than twenty years after spearheading England's latest rock n roll revolution, Pete Doherty and Carl Barat tell Rolling Stone UK about the genesis of All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, their upcoming fourth album.
By Nick Reilly
“We were in a glass studio at the top of a hill in the middle of a hurricane,” recalls The Libertines’ Pete Doherty. “All these birds kept getting confused and flying into the glass. There was a full-on eagle flying straight into it and, in the middle of all this, the Queen’s funeral was on the telly. It was quite apocalyptic really.”
Scenes like these, which occurred when Doherty and bandmate Carl Barât decamped to Jamaica for a writing trip in late 2022, feel perfectly representative of the way that The Libertines have existed for the past 20 years: constantly teetering on the thinnest of precipices between success and unparalleled chaos.
When the group first emerged at the turn of the century, they were the poster boys for England’s latest rock’n’roll revolution, a direct answer to the New York indie scene that was exploding across the pond, spearheaded by The Strokes.
But wherever The Libertines went, turmoil followed. The group became slowly fractured, in large part due to Doherty’s much-publicised battle with heroin addiction, before splitting in 2004.
Nineteen years later, it’s a very different state of play for the Likely Lads. Doherty has been clean of hard drugs since 2020, while the group — which also consists of bassist John Hassall and drummer Gary Powell — are readying themselves for the release of their fourth album All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade in March next year.
The follow-up to 2015’s Anthems for Doomed Youth is, according to Barât, the sound of a band in the most harmonious part of their career to date. “Our last album was a snapshot of The Libertines in disarray, whereas this album reflects The Libertines when we’re not like that,” Barât tells me. “There’s more harmony at the moment, which is useful for a band, innit. Things had drifted off at some point, but now I think they’re nicely back together again.”
One listen to the new record and it is immediately clear what Barât means. The ramshackle charm of their early work is back once more, but it’s tempered with a sense of reflecting on their here and now. Lead single ‘Run, Run, Run’ is a classic Libs back-and-forth between Doherty and Barât, but it also homes in on the idea of being a “lifelong project of a life on the lash” — something these two forty-something musicians can more than relate to.
“It’s autobiographical. It’s about us, it’s about time, and it’s about the world moving on and you know, not knowing if you’re running towards something or away from something,” Barât says.
It’s also helped by the fact that The Libertines have their own bonafide HQ down in Margate too. The album was recorded at the Albion Rooms, the studio and hotel that the group set up in 2019. “We were all there living together. First at the Albion Rooms and then at this place in Normandy, where I live,” says Doherty. “It felt like a collective, but we became this little unit, on a mission to get this album done.”
Now, it’s over to Pete and Carl to share the whole story behind All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade.
We’re speaking hours after ‘Run, Run, Run’ was released. How do you feel now that the first Libertines song in eight years is out there?
Doherty: I’m fucking excited. Not that I was never not excited about things we’ve released, but you hear this one on the radio, and it really hits what we call the sweet spot. It hits with a precision that you might compare to a guided missile, though in the current climate it might not be appropriate to talk about guided missiles. But look, I’m proud of the lads. We’ve hit the back of the net, and I’m over the moon.
Carl, you said recently that 2015’s Anthems for Doomed Youth never felt like a proper Libertines album. Why was that and why does this record feel like a proper album?
Barât: It does feel like I’ve given that album a kicking, but I do love it. It was just a snapshot of the Libertines in disarray, whereas this one is a snapshot of us not in disarray. Which is just lucky timing and helpful when you’re making an album, innit?
Doherty: I just want to say one more thing about ‘Run, Run, Run’. We reached a point late on where we only had nine finished songs, and we were scratching around for a brand-new song when Carl pulled that one out and played it. I just said, “Where have you been fucking hiding that?!” He wasn’t sure about it and whether to hide it, but we ended up recording it in two days straight. We have these weird, sacred moments where we play each other the songs we’ve come up [with], and we’re never sure what everyone else will think. Carl was unsure about it, but I said we had to record it the minute I heard it.
There’s been a fair bit of drama in your own friendship too over the years. Where do we find Pete and Carl in 2023?
Barât: I feel like being together and doing what we do without any distractions has naturally brought us together. We’ve got so much in common, and we’ve shared so much, and our chemistry together is unchanging. At this time, we’re in the best possible place I think we can be.
The business side too? This sounds like a different Pete to the one of old…
Doherty: Yeah, well, we’re looking to commercialise things ’cos we need to keep the Albion Rooms ticking over if we want to keep the venue and studio going. That’s hard work as we get a lot of young bands in to help them out. We’re not turning over a profit, but we’re staying afloat, which is exactly what we wanted with the Albion Rooms. And with energy prices being what they are too, I wanted to build a wind farm at the Albion Rooms.
A wind farm?!
Doherty: Yeah! I wanted to get a mini wind farm put on our studio extension, so I had the idea to put a small turbine on the roof. But you’re not allowed to do that, which for me doesn’t make any sense because surely that’s what we’re looking to do, isn’t it? For people to be self-sustaining and using renewable energy. We should get every street to have its own mini turbine. But the council in Margate wouldn’t let us do it.
It sounds like you’re living a more Zen existence in 2023…
Doherty: We used to live in a squat in Albion Road in Stoke Newington, and I was always amazed by this fella who used to live in a caravan out the back who ran the squat. We used to call him Delvin the Wizard, and he’d generate the power for his caravan on a converted exercise bike. I always thought that was amazing. It had never occurred to me before [that] that side of society existed. People who just wanted to break free from the system or live off-grid. But it’s actually quite simple, and it’s even more so the case now. We’ve got the technology for it, solar panels and wind turbines. So yeah, I’m all for a fucking green revolution, me. But a proper one, to put the power back in the hands of the people and to let them pedal their own fucking power! Why not? It makes perfect sense.
Pete, this is the first Libertines album you’ve made since becoming clean of drugs in 2020. How has the process changed in that sense? Less shambolic, I imagine?
Doherty: I just never used to enjoy being in the studio. I never really tried to spend too much time in there. It was always a question of having the songs ready, recording them, and then pissing off, to be blunt about it. I had better things to do; I wanted to score. But this time around, the songs weren’t ready, so I had to be there with Carl and the boys, finishing off the ones we have and then writing others together.
It was touch and go for a while for those first few weeks because we were trying to get into the pattern of living together — on top of each other. But fortunately, we were all in the same space and we really wanted to get it done. The most difficult part was the lyrics. We’d put the lyrics off until it became this mad blur of broken typewriters, I think we went through about six of them.
Barât: What’s that old saying? A fair day’s work for a fair day’s reward. We eventually managed to get around to that.
There’s a social urgency on this record, unlike other Libertines albums too. There’s the image of what it’s like to be a refugee in Brexit Britain on ‘Merry Old England’.
Barât: For me, we’ve always written about escape, and maybe there’s been a change in how we’ve embraced the world. But there’s definitely still an escapist element too, because we’re centring songs around Margate, which is where we’re ultimately based.
You’ve always discussed this feted ideal of Albion in your songs, which is an Old English name for Great Britain. How would you describe Albion in 2023?
Doherty: It’s many things. It can be two twins sat at home watching an old clip of a Libertines video, and their dad going, “Who’s this? The local pub band?” It’s a taxi driver short-changing a tourist. It’s a taxi driver being really kind to a tourist. It’s a little feeling in my stomach. It’s hard to describe it, but it’s a sense of homeliness, a recurring theme you’ve always come back to.
youtube
Pete, what’s an average day like for you in 2023? You seem to be living what seems like a rural and idyllic existence.
Doherty: I don’t know. Mind your business. My wife always complains when I say too much about our life. We’re trying to build a life for ourselves, and I just keep my head down really. I’ll walk the dogs in the forest, look after my new baby, watch a bit of telly. Do a bit of writing. I’d be lying if I said it was all perfect, but that’s we’re doing. Living it together and trying to build a life.
You both went to Jamaica in 2022 for a writing trip. How much of it was writing and how much of it was trying to strengthen your friendship?
Doherty: People thought we were off to Jamaica to just drink loads of rum, take loads of coke and go round on paddleboards. It wasn’t like that at all. We genuinely got our heads down to make some decent tunes and thought we had done, but when we got back it was all over the place.
Barât: Some of the stuff we recorded there did end up on the record. We had to have that trip because we weren’t necessarily ready to be full Libertines again, and we needed to go somewhere really far away. Why not pick somewhere really beautiful while you’re at it?
It seems like you’re both in a really good space, then. Was there ever a point over the past 20 years when you didn’t think you’d get here?
Barât: I’ve had a lifelong battle with depression of my own, to be honest with you. Pete’s problems didn’t help, but I always did my best to be supportive and understanding because we all have these problems and were never able to name them. Whether it’s depression or addiction, but I’ve had a lot of chaos and my own problems.
Doherty: It’s taken some absolutely unearthly skills for me to be standing here. Well, not standing, but slouching. I think I’ve been pretty on my toes, to be honest, dodging bullets. I’m full of holes [points to needle marks in his arms] but the bones are just about holding together. I’m battle-scarred and stumbling, but still here.
Pete, how often do you think about your friends that weren’t so lucky? You were close friends with Amy Winehouse.
Doherty: It’s quite difficult for me to talk about. Both Amy and Alan Wass [Doherty’s friend who died of a heroin injection], I listen to their music most days. So, I do think about it all, but I’d rather just not say offhand comments. My heart breaks when I think about some things, and this is just one of them.
But ultimately though, there’s a sense of harmony in The Libertines at the moment?
Doherty: Yeah, and the Albion Rooms has been a huge part of that. There’s no better feeling in the world, for me, than just sitting there in the gloom of an afternoon as some young band rolls up. They really believe in what they’re doing and getting out their guitars, tuning up and going through their songs while the low Margate sun shines through. I just love that. That’s what it’s about, and it just takes me back because they were the best moments for me in our early days. Just getting our guitars out and making a proper bit of noise.

"So far we have five videos planned ... "-abpc
With the opening lyrics of ‘Run Run Run’ describing “a lifelong project of a life on the lash“, singer Carl Barat described the track as a somewhat “self-referential” statement about where The Libertines are today...
youtube
“I was trying to work out if it’s a song of hope or a song of fear,” Barat told NME.
“I think it’s a song of hope. It’s saying that even though time has moved on and this person has stayed in the same place, he’s still able to do what he does and he’s going to be who he is regardless of times changing. I don’t know if that’s a sad thing or a good thing.” Asked if he feels more hope or fear now, Barat replied: “I’m eternally hopeful, and eternally afraid.”

(in which squash waxes poetic about carl barat)
lately i’ve just been thinking about carl and how incredible his love and loyalty to peter is. i mean peter’s pretty vocal about his love for carl but carl’s actions just blow me away with how strongly he must feel for peter. they always mention how they already bickering even when they first met and stuff but like the whole “throwing himself in the canal so peter will have to rescue him” is so dramatic and absurd but also such a massive display of love for someone. like you’re not going to toss yourself in a river when you can’t swim if you don’t desperately want to see that person as being dedicated to you. and all the stories about the antics they got up to together. and really you just have to look at the music video for waterloo to see how carl saw their relationship, which is just incredible and mindblowing that he saw peter as that much of a protector or comfort. and then later after the robbery like that is some incredible loyalty. your best friend steals from you and instead of getting furious you show up to pick him up from prison and hug each other and then go play a blistering show together, that’s just amazing. and even after the breakup, every time carl talks about peter or when they’re around each other during that weird time, he never seems properly angry, he just seems like he really really wants things to change but doesn’t know how to make it happen. that reunion interview with the sun is amazing because carl’s being so completely honest there about peter being someone who gets and completes him and how he misses him, which is really not something you see very often, and in carl who seemed so reticent when he was younger. and i mean christ the way he talks about peter in tanib, with so much affection. and instead of ever giving up and completely estranging himself from peter despite all the ups and downs and relapses and bad press and peter making songs being all pissed off at him directly and all that stuff, he just hung on until peter was ready to do rehab properly and then went and supported him. and peter has said now that he got properly clean this last time for carl, that carl made the effort of encouraging him to do it. it’s just amazing that it seems as though carl has never ever lost that love and loyalty for peter. and it’s amazing to look at carl’s interactions with peter onstage, too, because he just seems so eager to be hanging on to peter or leaning against him or whatever, and he’s usually the one to initiate that. lately it seems he’s the one initiating the mic shares a lot of the time too, wandering over during katie with body language that definitely says “please share with me.” and the way he looks at peter onstage it’s like he’s utterly delighted and amazed to be looking at him and have them both be happy and healthy. he clearly loves peter a lot and it seems like he’s really basking in being able to love peter without being wary of future problems. like it’s amazing and wonderful to see how much peter has changed and how happy and healthy he is but also seeing how much carl has changed is amazing too, because you look at footage from the early days and how aggressive and closed-off he seemed compared to how open and happy he seems now, it’s really nice that he’s able to be that way now. it’s just so wonderful and sweet that he’s been so loyal and solid for so long, and it must be great for him to be able to express that love now that they’re on much more stable ground.
#squash rambles#idk like i'm definitely more of a peter person like peter's art & literary & musical style appeal more to me#but i really like carl and he his love for peter is just amazingly strong#ahem pardon my wall of text

The Libertines talk being clean and connected: “We just want to write beautiful songs in the moment”
Watch Carl Barat and Pete Doherty talk to NME about 'All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade' – an album inspired by Margate, war, the refugee crisis, dead birds, and Queen Elizabeth – who'd play who in a biopic, and becoming the band they were always meant to be
ByAndrew Trendell
19th October 2023
The Libertines have spoken to NME about how a sense of sobriety, togetherness and the desire “to write beautiful songs” helped shape their long-awaited new album. Watch our video interview with the band above.
Announced last week with the launch of the single ‘Run Run Run’, ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ arrives in March as the long-mooted follow-up to 2015’s ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth’.
With the opening lyrics of ‘Run Run Run’ describing “a lifelong project of a life on the lash“, singer Carl Barat described the track as a somewhat “self-referential” statement about where The Libertines are today, ahead of their fourth LP.
“I was trying to work out if it’s a song of hope or a song of fear,” Barat told NME. “I think it’s a song of hope. It’s saying that even though time has moved on and this person has stayed in the same place, he’s still able to do what he does and he’s going to be who he is regardless of times changing. I don’t know if that’s a sad thing or a good thing.”
Asked if he feels more hope or fear now, Barat replied: “I’m eternally hopeful, and eternally afraid.”
youtube
NME sat down with Barat and co-frontman Pete Doherty to talk about being drug-free, becoming the band they are meant to be, who’d play who in a biopic, and penning an album inspired by Margate, war, the refugee crisis, dead birds, and Queen Elizabeth.
Hello, Libertines. You’ve felt very present since the last album. Does it feel surreal to finally be back with some new music?
Barat: “Yes, we’ve got a reason to be here now! It’s a monumental day for us.”
Doherty: “We’re fully behind the record. That’s not just the official line.”
What, if anything, does ‘Run Run Run’ tell us about the new album?
B: “It’s a bit of a red herring really. The whole record isn’t like that. Maybe it’s just getting a nod to the past out of the way.”
D: “There are three or four songs on the album that are that sort of tempo and guitar-driven. There are probably only one or two songs that are any punkier. It’s like an old melodic pop song like [Elvis Costello’s] ‘Oliver’s Army’. As a songwriter, it’s difficult to present good, classic-sounding songs. Call me old-fashioned, but that’s what I love. I love little diversions and mad jazz odysseys, but I love it when bands like The Coral and their new album… James Skelly just keeps writing incredibly beautiful songs with little twists, but still with that ‘60s melody, strength and solidity.
“I’d say ‘Run Run Run’ has got that, but I’d say there isn’t too much of that on the album. It’s probably more eclectic than we would have hoped for or would have done if we’d just done it by ourselves. The geezer who produced it – Dimitri Tikovoï – we gave him quite free reign.”
Speaking of eclecticism, Pete told us back in 2019 that you were looking like you’d be going in a similar direction to The Clash’s ‘Sandinista!’ – a little bit of rap and a little bit of everything. At what point did you shake that off and come up with this more cohesive batch of songs and new vision?
D: “When we heard my rapping!”
B: “The ‘Sandinista!’ thing was just the idea of having everyone involved. When we hadn’t written anything and we were a bit scared. The idea of ‘Sandinista!’ is that you can just do whatever with no particular expectations. It might have started in that way, but we ended up refining it because we realised what was there.”
So what happened when you went to Jamaica that made everything gel?
D: “It wasn’t a waste of time, because it really was an opportunity for us to spend a bit of time together. We just sat back and watched the Coronation. Or was it the funeral? Yeah, it was Lizzy’s funeral. At the time, we were well impressed with what we’d done. Then we got back and sat and played it to everyone…”
B: “It was essentially to get it out of the way. It’s better to do it there than to get everyone in the room, feel the pressure and not get anywhere. It was an essential part of the journey.”
Does Queen Elizabeth haunt the songs?
B: “A little bit, yeah”
D: “It was really strange. We were in this glass cubicle on a hilltop during a full-on hurricane, just watching the funeral and not really knowing what we were feeling. She does pop up in the song ‘Shiver’, which might be coming out as a second single. ‘The day they boxed all Lizzy away… The last king of every dying empire, just let it die/ Sit back enjoy the ride/ The last dream of every dying soldier/ I’ll see you there, flowers in your hair.’
“So this glass cubicle, they polish it like maniacs every day so the birds can’t tell that they’re flying into glass. Every so often, especially when it was very windy, you get these incredible little golden parrots and yellow hawks just going, ‘THWACK’ suddenly. It scares the fuck out of you.”
So the queen is dead, all the wildlife is dying…
D: “Yeah. It feels like the end of the world, doesn’t it? We [did] have a few apocalyptic songs that were a bit more boisterous than I could handle. I kept going to bed every time Carl started doing his big apocalyptic numbers. They were terrifying.”
Carl, you said that the first album was born of the “panic and disbelief” that you could do this, the second of “total strife and misery”, and the third of “complexity” – and this one is more of unity and connection?
B: “Yes, on this one we were all facing in the same direction.”
D: “All we want to do is write beautiful songs. That’s what we’ve always wanted to do, but we got distracted – mostly by ourselves. On this occasion, we followed the pattern of writing songs that we believe in but there was nothing else to say; no fanfare, no cacophony. This is the album we’re proud of.”
Do you feel like The Libertines are now the band you were always meant to be without the distractions?
B: “There’s plenty of ramshackle baked in still. I don’t think we really know what kind of band we want to be; we just want to write beautiful songs in the moment. It just so happens that at this moment, we’re all facing the same direction.
“There’s been a lot of focus and everyone’s been working on finding their own personal place in the world as well. Everyone has very different lives and we managed to find something to unite over. That’s what The Albion Rooms has been really good for – having that in bricks and mortar, and co-owned by everyone. It feels like it’s part of this journey that’s been going on for a while now.”
D: “The other albums were basically written before we went in the studio. This time it was a case of people presenting really strong ideas, and then everyone else just tucking in, putting their bibs on, rolling up their sleeves and chewing the fat. There were so many times on this album where I thought I knew what the song was, and then it became completely different for the best.
All four of you are credited as writers across the album. How did the spirit of the record change when John and Gary got involved?
B: “It was moments like Pete just described with everyone being there and having confidence. There was a flow state that gave us the confidence to go to places that we wouldn’t normally have gone in if we weren’t on the same page.”
D: “I remember being sat in John’s bedroom 24 years ago, and he had a song called ‘Annabelle Lee’. We never used to do it in the band – not because we didn’t want John to sing, but we both secretly loved the melody and thought that maybe one day we could worm our way into it. That’s what’s happened now. We turned it into ‘The Man With The Melody’ and we’ve all got a verse on it, and Gary sings on the chorus. It’s a completion and a full stop.”
Lyrically, what would you say you’re mining on this record?
B: “It’s one of those things you realise what things are about after the fact.”
D: “The most stressful times of the writing were the morning where we were sat with the pads getting told by the producer that songs needed vocals. We’d just been ad-libbing for most of the songs, so there were these frantic sessions which became a little bit stretched out where we couldn’t get it together with the lyrics. Then, they just sort of appeared out of nowhere.
“It’s fair to say it was pretty stressful finishing some of these songs, lyrically – which is what makes it even more precious as it was touch and go for a couple of them. We couldn’t let it go half-arsed.”
Let’s look at some other bangers on the record. ‘Have A Friend’ seems like a song that speaks for itself about unity?
B: “Yeah, in the face of war perhaps.”
D: “It was [originally] called ‘The Ballad Of Bakhmut’. There’s still a lot of that going on. The world is basically at war.”
‘Merry Old England’ is quite beautiful in the way it discusses the refugee crisis. What are you trying to invoke with that song?
D: “I love that song so much. I think it’s unfathomably beautiful. You can’t hold me back, I’m going to climb your cliff, scale your fence, and take over your country. I don’t think there’s any question marks at all. One man’s end-time capitalism London is another man’s playground of dreams where anything is possible – the mythical city that you finally reach after trying to break out of your miserable town and fulfil your dreams.
“For all the cynicism and talk of being pushed out of town, there’s another generation that will come and find a way to bring it alive again or find a way to make it their own; despite the weight of the fucking world.”
B: “The song is more of a montage than banging a drum, particularly.”
D: “It’s weird. I’ve tried playing it acoustically to people and some of the lyrics are strangely provocative. Even to say, ‘Syrians, Iraqis, Ukrainians, welcome to Merry Old England – how are you finding it?’ To start singing about visas, dinghies, the cliffs once white now grey; you can see people from both sides get excited. It’s just asking this kid on the corner of Margate who has landed there, kicking his heels and not really knowing what to do, how he’s finding it.”
After being scattered all over the world, how does it feel to be back in your old playground of London?
B: “We were driving down Old Compton Street where we used to work in the theatres and…”
D: “We felt like a couple of old gits!”
B: “We did. You can dial back the time in your mind and see all these different incarnations of the city. It’s the most magnificent organism of a place. ‘The city’s hard, the city’s fair’. It’s so alive. It’s quite beneficial to have perspective on that through time. I feel like it never leaves me. I feel a part of it even though I’m not living here.”
D: “It’s a bit too much for me. I’m a bit overstimulated because I lead quite a quiet, rural life now. I’m just doing the promotion work and then getting back to the wife and the dogs. You could quite easily fall for it all over again.”
Pete, when you released ‘The Fantasy Life Of Poetry & Crime’ with Frédéric Lo, you talked about how being drug-free and living a serene life in France had helped shape that record. How did you find approaching a Libertines record from that different perspective?
D: “I don’t know. It’s just an everyday scrap, really. It’s proper toe-to-toe with the demons, but because I believe so much in Carl, Gary, John and this record, it’s a pleasure. I just want to do my bit, be as professional as I can, let people hear the songs, and then go and play them. If not, we try again maybe or just crack on with the hotel and see if we can do anything with that.”
The first time NME came down to The Albion Rooms, Carl spoke about it being like Warhol’s Factory – a band HQ where creatives could come, go and feed off each other. Now you’re talking as if, for this record, the hotel almost became the fifth member of the band?
B: “It is our tangible embodiment of what we do. When we live in three different countries and only see each other through touring schedules, we need something. It’s essential that we have something to find us.”
Pete, there’s a new film about your life made by your wife and collaborator Katia de Vidas coming out soon. How does it feel to have your life under the microscope at a time like this?
D: “I’m really happy for Katia, really. It’s been finished for quite a while. I just hope the world gives her the credit she’s due. Now we’re thinking about the next project for her. She wants to do a fiction film. Hopefully if this does well and she can get the money together for the next project, it’ll be amazing. I’ll just be made up for her.
“It’s quite heavy watching a lot of that stuff, but it is a different time. The fuzz, forcefield and camouflage of the drugs I was taking at the time meant that I wasn’t arsed about what people thought or how I looked.”
Is this film drawing the curtain over that part of your life?
D: “Yeah, I still feel really connected to that fella up there on the screen. I can see it’s me, but I don’t think I’ll be able to watch it again, to be honest.”
Have you seen it, Carl?
B: “I have. Anything like that is hard to watch. She’s been making it for 10 years, and I think it’s a beautiful portrayal. It’s through her eyes, and I think she’s done a great job.”
Would we ever see a Libertines biopic?
B: “We’ve talked about it, but then we always have a row about who’s playing who!”
D: “We even tried to sit down and write some screenplays for it, but it always turns into some farcical comedy. There was a musical made in Korea called The Likely Lads. They said it was going to run and run, but it closed after two nights.”
So who would play who?
D: “Now with all this AI, you can just play yourself. We’d be playing with ourselves, as usual.”
How does the future feel right now? Does another album seem more likely than before?
D: “It would have nothing to do with whether we were relevant or getting fat, it would just be whether or not we had any decent songs. That’s the only way I can look at it. I just still get off on writing wicked tunes. Carl recently said to me, ‘I don’t care about being cool any more – I just want to write beautiful songs’. I was like, ‘That’s what we’ve always done’. Apparently not!”
B: “You just reminded me that I wasn’t cool.”
Are there any Libertines bucket list moments left to tick off, or is it just for the thrill of existence?
D: “I’ve got a new batch of songs on the brew that I’d really like Carl to hear and see what he can do with them.
B: “I’m always striving for the perfect song myself. I don’t know if you ever find it. It’s a bit Sisyphean, isn’t it? We’ll get there, or not.
So it won’t be another eight years until we get a new Libertines album?
B: “Maybe it will, you never know. We’re trying not to put that pressure on ourselves at this stage. I’d like to get in a flow state where songs just come out, but I find it quite hard work.”
The Libertines release ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade’ on March 8.
Fans who pre-order the album will be offered the chance to purchase tickets for ‘All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade – described as “two days of special acoustic and electric live shows by The Libertines” at the 500-capacity Lido in Margate on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December.
A new documentary about Doherty’s life, Stranger In My Own Skin, will hit cinemas on November 9.

What was the first AM song you remember hearing? What were you doing/wearing/thinking when you heard it? Was it the beginning of your loooooooove for them or did it take some time?//
Halloween 2007, my friends and I decided to all do costumes inspired by our favourite "obscure" pop culture icon (we were deep in the 'burbs so "obscure" really just meant anything that wasn't a current chart topper). My bf at the time and I made matching Scots Guard-style military jackets and went as Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. One of my artisier friends showed up dressed as a clown. When we all playfully gave him shit for doing a costume outside of what we agreed on, he said he was referencing the Flourescent Adolescent video and showed us the video/song.
I was amused but tbh not enamoured enough to do a deeper dive in to the band - I even forgot what they were called. It wasn't until years later when I went out with this English guy and he showed me their music and took me to a gig (I wrote about this story here before) that I got re-introduced to the band and fell in looooove. At that point I did a deeper dive and realized that the band was that same "clown band" from a bunch of years ago and I had been missing out. 😅😂
What a meet-cute that took years to be a full-on love fest 😂 love this!!!! And love the clown reference 😂

THE PEACH YOU HAD TO PICK | CHAPTER 28
The twenty-eighth chapter of my Chris Evans / Original Female Character fic. Please reblog if you enjoy reading it, give feedback, or even suggestions and prompts!
Ell wakes up to some unwanted publicity.
The first part of this fic is written as a tabloid news article. The rest is pretty much pure fluff! Content warning for pet names, hint at past abusive relationship.
‘Ell Rose celebrates with friends as new single hits #1 and rumours circulate about her dating life’
It seems that British singer, actor and model Ell Rose, 27, is firmly settling in to LA life as she celebrated her newest success with her band and her assistant Tom.
She was pictured leaving Thai restaurant Chao Krung in West Hollywood last night, a few hours after she was told that her new single ‘Someone Like You’ had reached the #1 spot all over the UK, US, Europe and Asia.
Dressed in a preppy baby blue checked co-ord set with a white turtleneck, Ell suited the smart casual look while still oozing sexiness.
‘Someone Like You’ is Ell Rose’s first new release in nearly three years, and her first since rumours began circulating about her break-up with her long-term partner and fellow musician and model Jamie Allen. The reason for the couple’s break-up has never quite been officially confirmed, but the pair have both been spotted on the arms of more than a few men and women over the past couple of years.
An insider said of Ell back in 2010: “She’s just enjoying herself, experimenting and dating around.”
But it seemed that it was more than just ‘enjoying herself’. Ell was frequently spotted in bars alongside known cocaine dealers, and several sources reported seeing the bisexual star leave the houses of many men and women around London.
Despite going off the rails, Ell remained tight lipped about the break-up, never once commenting on or mentioning Jamie when questioned. She worked hard to get her life back on track, and has seemingly relocated out of London to her $2million house in Los Angeles with her beloved dog Miffy in recent months.
An appearance on ‘The Late Late Show’ saw Ell step back into the limelight after a break, on which she debuted her latest single. The show, hosted by her longtime friend James Corden, saw ‘Captain America’ actor Chris Evans, 30, chivalrously switch seats with her after US comedian Chuck Peterson, 67, made Ell visibly uncomfortable, in a moment which sparked more than a few comments about the comic’s behaviour to other women in the entertainment industry. It is thought that Ell was also spotted in a restaurant with Evans and three of his ‘The Avengers’ co-stars - Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth - which led to questions about a potential upcoming role in an MCU film for Ell, but the sighting and any rumours remain unconfirmed.
Rumours were sparked about the relationship between Ell and Jamie once again during Ell’s headline show at LA’s Roxy Ballroom, when she made a few comments before performing new single ‘Someone Like You’ to the sold out venue. Video footage confirms that Ell talked about how she realised she needed “someone so much better” than the song’s inspiration, and, although it has never directly been confirmed that the song was written about Jamie, fans have speculated about it ever since its release.
Ell also encouraged anyone in the crowd who “feels unhappy, or unsafe, in a relationship, or a workplace, or anything” to “get out before it gets worse”, sparking even more curiosity to the nature of the relationship breakdown.
Since the breakup, Ell has been linked to a harem of celebrities, including Idris Elba, Julian Casablancas, Alex Turner, Jack O'Connell, Skepta, Carl Barat, Janelle Monae, Daisy Lowe, Kristen Stewart, and many, many more.
It is not known whether Ell is currently dating anyone, however a recent Instagram post of a picture of two plates of pancakes have suggested to some that there may be someone new in her life. Ell’s social media followers have been quick to try and pair her up with a number of people, including a suggestion of a potential reunion with Jamie Allen.
Daily Mail have reached out to Ell Rose’s team, who were unavailable for comment.
“Oh my God,” Ell sighed as she threw her phone down the bed.
It landed with a harder thud than she had intended, however, as it caused Chris to wake from his deep slumber. Ell had woken early, and Chris had been snoring away softly next to her for the past hour, his face buried deep into the pillow and his leg hanging out from over the side of the bed.

Client on working with Carl and Pete
Interview with Client, from nov. 2004, translated from german (into bad english)
Q: will there be a music video?
“This video will be on TV because Carl is the # 1 sex symbol in England having a little fun with our client B aka Sarah ...”
“You should see my face, I have a face like a honey cake horse, according to the motto: "Look who's there great next to me ..."
Q: I would like to know something about working with the different guest musicians on the album, Carl Barat and Pete Doherty from the Libertines [...]. Did you know them all before? “Pete and Carl don't. But we really wanted a deep male voice. The song "Down To The Underground" is about going underground, it's about sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll. And when Pete sang that, we got a call from Carl the next day that he wanted a song, too. And that was "Pornography", a piece that was perfect for a duet.”
Q: to me the background singing on “pornography” sounds a little strange (simulates moaning)
“Yes, he made about 40 takes on this track. And took more and more Jack Daniels and took off his shirt - which was very nice. And that's why it sounds a little ‘sleazy’"
Fact 1: Carl took off his shirt while recording a song.
Fact 2: Carl wanted to do a song with Client after Pete did.

How To Watch Online Movies
Tired of paying dollars for watching online movies? I will tell you in a very easy way about how you can watch movies for free online on your own computer or laptop.
There are many ways from which you can watch movies, but the best way is YouTube, it is a video streaming website and currently world's no.1 video streaming website where you can watch loads of videos of other people where they are uploading various kinds of videos like animals, songs, music, tutorials, internet tips and more.
But this is only the beginning believe me, you can even watch online movies on YouTube for free, this is what the best part is, you only have to be really creative and you'll have to search the right keywords on YouTube if you want to watch movies right on your computer screen, Basically YouTube offers a search engine where you can type keywords about what you want to see, and if there is any video which matches with your keyword term, it'll show up. Now if you want to watch a movie like say: High School Musical, you'll have to type something like: high school musical dvd rip, high school musical part 1, or anything which matches with the movie title. In case if you aren't able to find any movie there, try going on to DivX Videos, where you can watch movies for free in a great quality, which you can't find easily anywhere else. Similarly, you can visit forums where there are Free Online Movies streaming, and more like that.
So these are the multiple ways for watching movies, videos, music videos and more, although these are only the few websites which are offering streaming, there are thousands of more on which you can stream videos and watch.
