I’ve read (and reblogged) a lot of great meta posts about Beau in episode 93, but there’s an aspect I haven’t seen addressed yet that I want to talk about. I don’t necessarily think it was the driving force behind Beau’s offer, but I do think that there’s a good chance it played into it quite a bit. It’s something that occured to me when the first thing Beau said to get to the conclusion of “I’m leaving” was that TJ and Luc could be best friends.

Beau had met her brother the day before, and he obviously made an impression on her. No matter how she feels about her parents, I think it’s safe to say she immediately felt attached to the little one.

So now that she cared and worried about a little child (and had been reminded of being a child longing for her parents’ love as well), and knew that a child about that age was sitting in Nicodranas, waiting for his mother, how could she not have wanted to do something to get that little kid his mother back? A good mother, a loving mother, maybe a family unit? What she’d wanted herself and wanted for TJ?

Beau decided she needed to offer a deal. From what we know, she thinks her life is already fucked up, that it’s not going to get better than this. So to her it seemed like a good deal in that moment: why not give a kid, that might as well be her brother or his best friend, another chance? She’s going to lose everything eventually, anyways.

If Beau had gone through with her deal, if Yasha hadn’t interrupted her explanation by going in and baragaining with the hag herself, if Jester hadn’t tricked the hag, then I think Beau might’ve even asked the Nein to look out for TJ after she’s gone, and to take him to Yeza and Luc (and eventually, possibly Nott) if something went wrong at the Lionett’s so he could have a good family.

Yes, she wanted to help Nott and it made sense to her to give up everything good in her life for that. But Beau had also just been reminded the day before how much love she had had to miss when she was young, and she knew she didn’t want that for another child. Not for TJ, not for Luc.

the tragedy of families is that a child needs perfection and no mother is mary. every mother is a woman and a woman cries, and yells, and fights, and picks at every scab even after she kisses the band-aid and pretends not to rub away the sensation of her own child’s covered skin and the taste of plastic. you’re lucky if your mother doesn’t hit, because most mothers do---even if it’s not a slap to the back of the skull or something far worse, it’s the little things she calls love taps after a dark-humored nervous giggle, every time you say something wrong, every time u pick at your cuticles or bounce your leg or scribble on your hands or your jeans when she’s watching. 

your mother will teach you how to shave and how to bleed, and judge you for it every time you do. 

but she loves you (in her own way), and love isn’t a feeling, it’s a decision to enter a relationship, it’s a choice you make everyday. love isn’t perfect either, you know, just like mothers can never be perfect, love can’t ever be either. mothers sleep and mothers leave and mothers lie and mothers die, and it feels worse when it’s before you do, because you always want your mother to wake up at 6 am to make you breakfast (even though you do most of the cooking these days), and go to sleep never, but everyone else you’ve ever met honestly hopes that’s what she wanted for the both of you.

for you to grieve her.

for you to worship a pretty face done up in lipstick, and glossy as if fresh from the steamy bathroom mirror. because every time you picture having a child for yourself, you have to admit, it’s always about that same joy your mother pictured in the moments she DID want you. that relationship, of needing to be needed. needing to be cared for, more from her than you sometimes as you grew older, and even sometimes when you were too young to follow through on your end of her baragain (she hopes you’re too young to remember, i’m a terrible mother she says, or she says nothing at all, and the thought just has to sit between the two of you, in the car, in her bedroom late at night, watching television your father doesn’t like before you both go to sleep in seperate rooms, at all different hours, apart).

you have to wonder if complicated relationships with your mother are built into being a child, or at least a girl.

but if you have children one day yourself, all you can do is be better than your own mother, and definitely your own father. that’s easier said than done, and easier for some than most. if you do, you can only hope your child will grieve you better, and that your lipstick will be tasteful, and your casket will be closed.

tbh it’s literally a bunch of chaos like i’m not saying this to be funny lmao, there’s always something going on. i opened my save the other day to find gguk and yoongi “practice fighting” while their breakfast was still cooking on the stove?? then jimin comes downstairs to not only ignore the possible fire about to start but go straight to the bar and make 3 drinks. all for himself. keep in mind this is all happening at 7:30 in the morning. a few hours later i hear lowkey terrible singing and it turns out to be namjoon writing a jazz song. so i’m like okay let’s see what jin’s doing. he’s right behind joon waiting to ask for a foot massage skfljskldsjflksfjskfs. then there’s hobi, who’s just minding his business dancing to... lullabies in yoongi’s studio. literally the only normal person in this house in tae.

THEN theres’s all the times they nearly died :))))))

This isn’t in relation to how Three Houses is written itself, but I’d like to point out that this reminds me of how so many of the Edel-stans create problems based on Edel’s gender out of thin air. Seriously.

Now, I won’t say that Three Houses doesn’t have some misogynistic writing tropes at all, given that most characters who suffer under “Teh Crest Systum” are women who are being treated as breeding stock and baragaining chips. But the writers didn’t make women in particular suffering this kind of abuse as a plot point to be intentionally recognized or thought about, cuz not once does anyone in the game think “huh, it sure is weird how women in particular are suffering this degree of abuse, and men aren’t.” Apparently Sylvain hating people for not liking him for his personality and Hanneman feeling a type of way for what his sister went through is some great equalizer.

But I digress; the point is, 3H doesn’t care about pointing out misogyny nor is anyone’s gender an inhibitor on their lives. But as I said, Edelstans will create these problems whole cloth, and slowly but surely act as if they’re real and canon. And then proceed to act as if they are pioneering a feminist plot through their support of Edel cuz “THIS POOR GIRL IS SO OPPRESSED!!!”

And... creating misogynistic problems from nothing and applying them to a piece of media that didn’t (deliberately) have any of said problems in the first place? Just so you can prop up your fav character? That’s really not feminist in the slightest IMO. And I’m not a woman so maybe it’s not my place to comment on that, but it just seems incredibly backwards and regressive.

i like how when the fantasy genre gets Feminist it's still very often like:

-lightly misogynist fantasy setting as backdrop for plucky heroine who shows everyone that Girls Can Fight, with numerous 'huhhhh????????? a GIRL???????????????!!!!!!!" scenes (that might have been saying something new in like, the 80s latest) trying so hard to prove Girls Can Fight that you wonder why they arent just creating a setting where women have relative social equality to begin with.

-heavily misogynist fantasy setting as backdrop for story where the author ascribes misogyny to innate human sexual differences divorced from cultural construction (shockingly, 100% in line with exact ways western gender binary and womanhood is culturally constructed). heroine spends much time lamenting on this, having been directly imparted with the author's great wisdom on these matters. other women are mostly repressed or antagonistic to our heroine, who herself spends many paragraphs fantasizing about boring male leads due to author's beliefs about this being an innate physical drive and preoccupation of all women (which is lamented about). at absolutely no point is people sometimes having gay sex and relationships acknowledged as a thing that exists.

-the same as the above but author is approaching from a 'we are the daughters of witches you couldnt burn' kinda angle and is writing a manifesto against christianity and patriarchy that is more rigid and binaristic in its views on gender than an early middle ages christian peasant.
