A Role to Play Build 0.04 - Text-message Roleplay and Murder

Howdy, folks! McSkinny here. It's been a minute, but here's a new build for A Role to Play. This build contains quite a bit more story-content than the average Echo-sized update. Additionally, we also got quite a few new pieces of art and music that hopefully make things a bit more polished. It's kind of amazing how much the bar has raised in recent years concerning how professional indie-VN's look.

This time, the gang gets into the full swing of their tabletop gaming, and the pressure is on to really get into character here. Getting used to roleplaying is always a little awkward at first. Some people treat it like writing personal fiction, while others see it more as taking on a different personality and becoming one with the character. For this update, I got in touch with my old D&D dungeon master and Corruption of Champions contributing writer, Donto, and he helped co-write those sections of the script. Biggest Idiot for January 2016:

Biggest Idiot of the Month is once again "RIchard Katellis" from Kit n Kay Boodle, this is where his alleged stories took a turn for the creepier. He has sex with his girlfriend in front of his girlfriend's mom and girlfriend's mom jacks off to it, also we learn they do, ergh, roleplaying. Thankfully none of this happened in real life. (Although the ending panel really insisted it did) but it still makes you wonder why did Albert Temple think this was a good story to publish to the internet??? Especially the vitriolic Internet of 2000's???

You could make the argument Myrna is a runnerup for agreeing to this and their roleplaying, but I think Shirley is the real runnerup here for being complicit in this ludicrous fantasy. The second runnerup definitely is Kit for doubting that Gods of Yiff exist despite HAVING EVIDENCE OF THEM CLEARLY EXISTING. There were no Dominic Deegan runnerups oddly enough, maybe because Celesto debuted this month.

Biggest Idiot for February 2016:

Biggest Idiot of the Month is Incognito Vixen from Kit n Kay Boodle, which...yeah, she deserves it for being genuinely the most annoying character in the comic. She loves to lick pussy, ask for anal sex and enforce same species relationships, I mean what.

Only runnerup this month was Lady Szark, because of her terrible plan to kill her husband and her freeing Infernomancer moments after being frozen. If Miranda wasn't there everyone would have fucking died.

Biggest Idiot for March 2016:

This month was much more stacked in terms of idiots compared to last two months, but Kit n Kay Boodle's streak continues, as Biggest Idiot of the Month is Incognito Vixen for the second time in a row, Kit and Kay Boodle tell her they are mildly disappointed in her not being able to keep an eye on the rat and she throws an ENORMOUS SHITFIT to the point she tries to erase herself out of existence. Calm the fuck down girl.

As for runnerups, this month we had the infamous hateable fucking taxidriver dog who keeps jacking off instead of doing her job, we had Shirley Mouse go on a BIG CRENDALL style freakout over their parents getting into a pseudoincestous bizarre relationship, we had Rachel from Dominic Deegan begin her obsession with BUTT-LESS CHAPS and lastly we had Bret Taggetry being the gym class nightmare born strawman. Completely unrelated to anything else, his month I also learned not liking anal masturbation makes me a puritan.

Biggest Idiot for April 2016:

Skamm you stupid horndog. You earned the Biggest Idiot of the Month with your horny fantasies induced by the existence of least attractive bara of all time, Kir Kiridan. Skamm being turned into a drooling idiot at the sight of him is a character assassination of the biggest level but thankfully, he does have a redeeming moment with him being made into Mitchell's puppet, actually maybe Mitchell is the bigger idiot.

This month did mark the debut of R-Mobs in Dominic Deegan, and the infamous Penelope the Pain storyline that never went anywhere. Maybe she ditched a train ride somewhere with Ernie. Other runnerup was definitely Bunko's girlfriend from KnKB for never shutting up about the Hammer of Love.

Biggest Idiot for May 2016:

You are probably sick of Kit n Kay Boodle hogging the spotlight every month but the good news is, it's finally over. And the final winner for final Month is Bunko. Looking back a lot of what Bunko says that isn't using "Islandia Pacifica" over and over like it's a twitter buzzword in 2020's, feels like Proto-Family of Intelligent Life shit. Basically, Bunko is so goddamn smart about being right and anyone who even remotely disagrees with Yiffburg's hedonistic way of life is an enemy who needs to be brainwashed or perhaps even eradicated. This should more than anything prove Richard and Albert were the same person.

Other runnerups for this month were Dominic Deegan for starting his whole "World Saving Pessimist" spiel, Infernoprancer for having one of the stupidest superforms in webcomic history, and a certain superheroine in training by the name of Heather Brown who made her debut after the end of KnKB, expect to hear more from her soon.

Biggest Idiot for June 2016:

But that will have to wait, the biggest idiot of the month is Infernoprancer, for disguising himself as Dejah, a previous Biggest Idiot of the Month winner. That is...the most asinine disguise he possibly could have taken. And it didn't work!

Runnerups for this month included Spinny for being an idiot and also...surprisingly enough, Sahira for straight up making homophobic assumptions.

I mean, the rest of the comic proved her right but rereading this, this is so fucking out of left field, almost like Kraw is a hack.

Biggest Idiot for July 2016:

Yup, this is where Dominic Deegan was at his worst behaviour-wise. Him acting like a complete and utter manchild did NOT help his quest to stop Serk Brakkis. I know the comic frames as Dominic being in the wrong at the end of the story, but still, it doesn't do good enough job condemning him.

Other runnerup is Spinny, again, for being an idiot.

Biggest Idiot for August 2016:

Who else would it have been? Like, do I even need to explain why STONEWATER was the obvious winner?

This month had surprisingly strong contendership though even if they were still light years behind Stonewater's Idiocy levels. Dominic Deegan, because of his manchildiness, could have PREVENTED THE ENTIRE BATTLE OF BARTHIS ARC FROM HAPPENING if he paid attention to that stupid ring, and we also had Spinnerette being a crybaby over her stupid arms. I miss it when there was a conflict where Spinny had to drop her arms every other issue, and her reaction to it became worse and worse until...actually, I won't spoil it for now.

Biggest Idiot for September 2016:

Dominic Deegan's streak continues with Spark getting his second victory. Spark going on a serious rant about Deegans wanting to save Szark, and then going back and shitting on Szark after trying to defend him proves why he is still the biggest waste of space as a character. Was this supposed to be funny? I did forget Szark had the whole "I must die" thing to him, which makes Spark yelling back at him more fucked up. Does he like anyone???

The only runner-ups were Colonel Glass from Spinnerette for being such a lame edge lord villain and for killing a cat like a fucking lunatic and Spinnerette herself for her idiocy and how she's still "learning to be gay".

Biggest Idiot for October 2016:

The biggest idiot of the month is Heather Brown, AKA Spinnerette, for not only making light of Mecha Maid's short lifespan, but also pissing Mecha Maid off for killing Colonel Glass. She also says the most hypocritical thing imaginable in the above page.

Runnerups were Deegan for his psychopathic screaming at his friends, Siggy for his out of nowhere racism and Colonel Glass once again for a waste of space edge lord.

Biggest Idiot for November 2016:

Whether or not you think she was screwed over by her treatment, it's hard to not feel bad for Adrastea from Spinnerette since she is an even bigger try hard edge lord than Colonel Glass. Seriously her dialogue is really painful to read and she just wasted everyone's time. I think she should just have sued them like normal people.

Runnerups for this month were Werequakko Sisters for existing and Mecha Maid for putting the tutorial to make her suit on Youtube which inspired Adrastea with her armor.

Biggest Idiot for December 2016:

Biggest Idiot of the Month is Dominic Deegan for being grossly incompetent. HOW THE FUCK DID YOU NOT SPOT YOUR GIRLFRIEND BEING CHOKED BY URBAN EDDIE AND THEN PROCEED TO DO NOTHING??? MR. SEER OVER HERE WAS MORE CONCERNED FOR STUNT AND BUMPER'S BREAKUP. No wonder she ghosted you at one point.

Runnerup for this month was Lady Ambar for her disgustingly longwinded and borderline nonsensical speeches (You Are Not Weapons That Exist Until Needed) on the The Knighthood story.

Biggest Idiot of 2016

Biggest Idiot of the Year is Dominic Deegan. Yeah, Battle of Barthis, War In Hell and the Thief Arcs did not portray him well at all. Even if I did feel bad for him during War In Hell, we should not forget Dominic is getting involved in massive conflicts on purpose, and he can't often behave himself. He also seems to be genuinely incompetent AND overpowered at once? Like, the dude can be the "Champion of Balance" but he can't see a stupid ring hidden in somewhere or see his girlfriend being choked? Also, he fucking needs to take anger controlling lessons, because seriously, he can't stop screaming when things don't go his way. Also, while he didn't outright defend him, he was WAY too light on Stonewater's crimes. I do give Mookie credit for having Dominic overcome his nihilism after Storm of Souls after witnessing Celesto's genocidal desires.

Next year, Dominic Deegan goes on vacation and Spinny gains some weight. Both of those are much worse than they sound. Also, an unassuming webcomic about a certain street smart cat who cameo'd in Kit n Kay Boodle begins its long tenure on the blog.

tell us about overclocked, what is it? you said 'a visual novel with tactical combat'?

EHEHE, thank you so much for asking!!!

Overclocked! is my idea for a strategy roleplaying game (combining a visual novel with tactical/strategy combat throughout) - sort of like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Into the Breach, if you've ever played any of those games. If you haven't, you can imagine each combat as a chessboard, if a chessboard sometimes interrupted movement with difficult terrain. Usually the goal is to move your characters across the chessboard, eliminating all enemies or a leader enemy to win the match and advance the story. Outside of combat, you can wander around your 'camp' to talk to your NPC companions, build rapport, and learn more about the story at large!

This story would follow 7 AI who find themselves on a spaceship, the Independent Variable, headed toward an extinct alien planet:

Tex (he/him), the Trapper -- and the player character!

Peaches (she/her), the Bomber

Merit (he/him), the Utility

Nova (she/her), the Dynamo

Prime (he/xe), the Pyro

Gali (they/them), the Floe

Democritus (he/him), the onboard AI - unlike the other characters, he doesn't have a mobile platform body and is housed literally inside the ship itself, controlling and piloting it.

The player, as Tex, is awoken by Democritus during a missile alert and instructed to wake the other bots. Turns out the extinct alien planet they're going to isn't so extinct after all... well, the aliens themselves are long dead, but they've left behind defensive robots to guard their ancient ruins. With the other bots awake and the missile robots defeated, Democritus explains that they were built to retrieve an ancient artifact from this dead world, one that could potentially bring about world peace: an alien AI whose purpose was to govern politics, the economy, and prevent war. To get it though, they will first have to fight through the planet's remaining defenses to collect parts of the artifact that have been scattered across the globe.

As they travel across the dead world, however, they start to realize that things aren't quite adding up. Some horrible truths are revealed about the aliens, the world, and the crew of the Independent Variable itself. Choices have to be made, which can lead to one of three different endings I have planned: the happy ending, the scattered ending, and... the worst ending.

Each of the six 'Power' bots has unique capabilities split into two categories: Mechanical (Trapper, Bomber, Utility) and Thermodynamic (Dynamo, Pyro, Floe). Mechanical Powers focus on your 'typical' kinetic forces: hitting stuff really hard or tripping things up. Thermodynamic Powers are more like magic!

First up: team Mechanical! As the Trapper, Tex is fast, maneuverable, and great at battle field control, capable of leading enemies into well-laid traps like trip mines. Peaches, the Bomber, is... well. A bomber. Her main weapon is a grenade launcher that launches wire pods to deal damage and entangle enemies. What more could you want in a Bomber? Then Merit, as the Utility, is your strongest healer and buff support guy (pun intended on 'buff' - the guy is bara as hell). He's the one most capable of causing the other Power bots to overclock (i.e., land critical hits)!

And Team Thermodynamic! Nova, the Dynamo, is your go-to gal for a rocket-powered punch that leaves enemies quaking in their boots with dangerous electric currents. Prime, the Pyro, of course has a flamethrower, but is also capable of overheating enemy units such that they can just fall apart in a gust of wind. Gali, the Floe, is a sniper with pinpoint accuracy for freezing enemies out of their abilities, movement, or life itself. Probably the term Thermodynamic makes a bit more sense here now: electricity, hot, and cold "magic!"

While each Power bot starts off in their own niche of tactics, as the course of the game progresses and each bot levels up, they all learn new abilities that are more aligned with different strategies - DPS, healing, battlefield control, etc., - so that even if you lose one bot in the course of a battle, the others can fill in that niche a little bit.

Luckily, even if you do lose a bot, you can bring them back after the fight is over! After all, they're robots, they can be rebuilt! Luckily, no memories are lost in the course of a rebuild, so they can all keep on trucking until they acquire the treasure: the alien AI that can bring about world peace!

I got a cute mix of an idea I want to do. I love Underswap Papyrus and I thought it would be cute to do some skelepreg/family fluff with him. Papyrus will be the one pregnant. I would say they're a bit older and all the resets are done for good. Our characters really want to have kids and have also been together for quite awhile. They've tried and tried with no success which has upset Y/C greatly, but one morning while getting ready Stretch sees well he has an ecto-belly and there is two little souls floating in it. Yep! He's pregnant with twins! This will be a cute fluffy kind of Roleplay and maybe a little bit angst with Pap's remembering the resets and probably a little on edge about it happening again and losing their babies. Anyways! They'll have a girl and a boy! We can come up with names when you connect if you want!

It was really hard seeing his partner so upset like this. "We can just keep trying. I know it'll happen soon." He always reassured his lover with a tight hug. Having kids meant so much to them and it was difficult watching the continued fails they were having. It wasn't his partner's fault. His soul had been damaged from the resets which he knew was the reason why this wasn't working. It was all his fault. The next morning was the same routine. Y/C checked and nothing was there, he grew upset and Stretch comforted him. He continually started to feel worse each time this happened. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." He murmured holding his lover tightly to him. It made his soul hurt so much.. All he wish he could do was take this pain away.

It was an hour later and Y/C had gone down to start their breakfast while Stretch got ready for his shift. His fingers grabbed the bottom of his black tank before he pulled it off and tossed it aside. Sighing he looked at himself in the mirror. He looked exhausted. The emotional mess he had become had thrown off his sleep schedule majorly. Sighing he shook his head and went to take his shorts off so he could shower but something caught his eye. "The hell-?" An ecto-belly? When the hell did he get-… He froze as the palms of his hands settled on it. Wait. Wait. His soul practically jumped out of his chest when he saw the two little souls floating within it. He was pregnant. Tears formed in his eye sockets. "Ba-Babe!" He called to him as loudly as he could. They had to see this!

Any type of roleplay is okay, whether it be actual roleplaying (which I prefer third-person roleplays) or just chatting with the characters (which, there are no requirements there).
