Just before the Covid19 hit the globe; we manage to make one last trip (in late memory of Arwah Abah). 

Off we go to Bangkok. Before jetting: we spend some hours in MH Golden Lounge KLIA. We stayed at ‘halal’ hotel in Bangkok and they served halal food during morning breakie and in-room dining.  Moving around was made easy with Grab.

Jetting was decent with MH Business Class. Managed to do some lounge hopping at Bangkok Airport: Miracle Lounge and Cathay Pacific Lounge.

A bill to legalize same-sex marriage could face a vote in Thailand’s parliament as early as Wednesday. If it passes, the country will be the first in Southeast Asia to establish marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.

The House of Representatives will take up the legislation, technically an amendment to the Civil and Commercial Code, for second and third readings when it meets at 9 a.m. Lawmakers may vote later in the day.

The bill would legalize marriage for same-sex partners aged 18 and above, along with rights to inheritance, tax allowances and child adoption, among others. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s administration has made it a signature issue, and advocates say it would also burnish Thailand’s reputation as an LGBTQ-friendly tourist destination.

Taiwan and Nepal are the only places in Asia that currently recognize same-sex marriage, and recent efforts elsewhere in the region have had mixed results. Hong Kong has yet to comply with a 2023 court order to establish laws recognizing same-sex partnerships, and India’s Supreme Court refused to legalize same-sex marriage, saying it’s an issue for parliament to consider.

The Thai bill would change the composition of a marriage from “a man and a woman” to “two individuals,” and change the official legal status from “husband and wife” to “married couple.”

Thai laws have protected LGBTQ people from most kinds of discrimination since 2015, but attempts to formalize marriage rights have stalled. In 2021, the Constitutional Court upheld the law recognizing marriage as exclusively between a man and a woman. Last year, a bill to recognize same-sex civil partnerships failed to clear parliament ahead of elections.

Rights advocates have higher hopes for the bill pending now, noting that it has broad support from most of the major parties. If it passes, it will need to be approved by the Senate and endorsed by the King. Then it would be published in the Royal Gazette and take effect 120 days later.

Srettha’s government has also promised to work on a bill to recognize gender identity, and the health ministry has also proposed legalizing commercial surrogacy to allow LGBTQ couples to adopt children. Thailand is seeking to host the WorldPride events in Bangkok in 2028.

Legalizing same-sex marriage could have positive effects on tourism, which contributes about 12% to the nation’s $500 billion economy. In 2019, before the pandemic froze international tourism, LGBTQ travel and tourism to Thailand generated about $6.5 billion, or 1.2% of gross domestic product, according to industry consultant LGBT Capital.

Formal recognition could boost the reputation of a place already considered one of Asia’s best for LGBTQ visitors, said Wittaya Luangsasipong, managing director of Siam Pride, an LGBTQ-friendly travel agency in Bangkok.

“It will become a selling point for Thailand and raise our strength in the global stage,” Wittaya said. “It will create a relaxed and safe atmosphere for tourism and help attract more and more LGBTQ visitors. We could also see more weddings by LGBTQ couples, which could generate income across industries and local communities.”

Ariana Grande interviews Jonathan Bailey for VMan Magazine (2024)

Jonathan Bailey’s acting career began at the age of eight when the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company cast him in a role coveted by all little boys who like musicals: Gavroche in Les Miserables. Since then, he’s starred in contemporary plays, refined his iambic pentameter flow via several Shakespearian productions, and, in 2019, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in the gender-swapped revival of Company. In other words, Bailey is a theater nerd. 

This made his upcoming role as Fiyero Tigelaar in the movie adaptation of the Broadway hit, Wicked, all the more unbelievable to him. Over Zoom, with co-star Ariana Grande, Bailey admits that he’s only recently had the space to fangirl over the reality that he’s playing the lead in a musical that rocked his world when he first saw it at the age of 15. Tuning in from Thailand, he and Grande chat about his upcoming project, another adaptation, Jurassic Park, and the memories of Oz that he (reportedly) carries in his pocket.

Ariana Grande: Hi, good morning. What time is it for you?

Jonathan Bailey: It’s 8am. Feeling pretty fresh.

AG: You look beautifully fresh. Just for context, for people reading, Johnny, you’re currently in Thailand. What are you up to over there?

JB: I’m on a really long holiday in the jungle, pretending to run away from fake dinosaurs… Um, no, I’m filming Jurassic Park.  And there are massive links between it and Wicked because it’s got so many of the same crew.

AG: Yes!

JB: The bereavement of leaving Wicked behind has been sort of solved by the fact that so many of them are still here. So, I’m keeping the Wicked dream alive, but with dinosaurs. 

AG: That’s so beautiful. You’re so lucky to have a little piece of Oz with you still every day.

JB: I carry Oz in my pocket. 

AG: Yes. How is it going? 

JB: I am loving it. We’re doing a whole new version of the Jurassic Park franchise.

AG: What can you say about your character, about this new franchise?

JB: I can say that it’s written by David Koepp, who wrote the original. It feels like it’s in ultimate hands to bring it back to what the original achieved. (Jurassic Park) was the first film I went to see with my whole family, and I was way too young, I was terrified. There is a similarity between doing this and Wicked, I also saw the original run of Wicked in London. 

AG: I would love to touch on Fellow Travelers, which was such an emotional and expansive project. What was the process of taking on a character like Tim, whose story is told over several decades? 

JB: Fellow Travelers will always be something that I’m incredibly proud of. For me it [was] the most fulfilling creative, emotional, and spiritual thing I’ve done. Tim and Hawke (leads in Fellow Travelers) are allegories. So many men that lost their lives. It’s never lost on me, all the other actors that couldn’t come out or were vilified for being caught having sex in toilets. All the horrific ways in which a pure thing like man-on-man love has been misconstrued.

AG: It was absolutely palpable. 

JB: I had this amazing weekend in Bangkok and I met this group of Malaysian dudes who were just so brilliant. They were doctors and they were really bright, intelligent, kind, sweet men who were having such a brilliant time. We ended up having dinner and, after a few drinks, they were telling me that they come over from Malaysia to Bangkok because they can’t be out to their families.

AG: My God.

JB: It’s so painful.

AG: I was gonna say, this leads us beautifully into The Shameless Fund, your foundation that you launched actually this week, congratulations. How does it feel that it’s finally out there in the world?

JB: It’s been a labor of love for about two years. When the second series of Bridgerton came out, I was suddenly aware of an increased platform, especially the fact Bridgerton is viewed in multiple territories where being gay is different. So, I just sort of fused the two together—

AG: It’s a beautiful way of making sense of it all. 

JB: Thank you for being an icon and an ambassador for the Shameless Fund.

AG: I’m so proud of you and I love you and your heart so much. Okay, moving on. I was wondering what things have helped you recharge your human battery?

JB: I’ve adapted my life slightly. I don’t live in a city anymore, I do a lot of swimming and gymnastics, which is something that I’ve done [since] I was younger. I [also] think it’s friends, which I know is such a sort ofeye roll [answer]. I’ve got amazing friends, they’ve always been there and I’ve been friends with them for so long.

AG: And me, for 2 years. 

JB: I’ve spiritually known you for 20 years.

AG: Yeah, 100. Let’s move on to Wicked. How did you prepare for the role of Fiyero? 

JB: I mean, it’s a complete dream come true. The preparation started when I listened to the soundtrack when I was like 15. And I remember viscerally; it sent ripples through culture. Also, I remember hearing the orchestration. I hadn’t really heard the synth-meets-full-orchestra-meets-syncopation.

Something about it just completely grabbed me. My best friend from school, me and him went to go and see it together—we were soulmates through school. And it was so funny that, like, two lads just went with it. I think the themes of Wicked have probably expanded, and that’s what I’m really excited about with the film.

AG: Yeah, it feels like it needs to be now more than ever before, perhaps.

JB: I went to go meet Jon (Chu, director). We chatted for about two and a half hours and it was really emotional. The one thing that we talked about with Fiyero: everything is so easy to him. How do you tell the story of someone who seemingly doesn’t care? What’s he frustrated by? We discussed it and found quite a human thing, I think. And, obviously, with our film, it represents extreme privilege and it’s about his bubble needing to pop. 

AG: I think our characters share that in a big way, Elphaba comes along and pops both of our bubbles. Perhaps for the first time we both are able to look at things differently. And it’s not that we’re not loving, heartful people. It’s just that we’ve never had to look outside of what affects us until we meet her.

JB: Exactly. And anyway, it was Jon. Basically, the answer to every question about Wicked is Jon Chu. Don’t you think?

AG: Yeah, I do. I think we were very spoiled to have done this with him. It felt like a teeny, little secret student thing—its intimacy. It felt so small and private until all of a sudden, we were outside, and the Daily Mail was hand gliding over our set—oh, he should play the pterodactyl in your film. 

JB: I think he’s actually hovering over right now.

AG: Can you explain what this was, please? 

JB: It was a man on a massive kite, floating around with his legs hanging down.

AG: I couldn’t believe my eyes. Well, firstly because I don’t have the best eyes. But secondly, because there’s no way. There’s no way! I was like, ah, guy on a hand glider.

JB: With a GoPro. With a GoPro on his toes.

AG: With a GoPro on his toes. Was your experience filming Wicked at all what you expected it to be?

JB: There were certain elements of it that I was incredibly impressed by and I think that is because of the love and care of Mark Platt and Jon Chu. Obviously we’ve grown up loving theater and musical theater, I always felt attached to that wonderment. I think my expectation might have been that somehow in the making of something, you lose that. But we were on those incredible sets. 

AG: Oh my gosh. Best in the world.

JB: I think I was in Wicked fan survival mode for the last 18 months. I’m starting to really get excited about it.

AG: It takes a certain amount of time to grieve something like that. I mean you’re already in Thailand and a whole different person, but it’s interesting how it takes a while and then it hits you.

Their seventeenth week in the military is now complete. It's time to celebrate this milestone with a look back at this week in 2019.

This week marked the end of the original Love Yourself Tour which took place between August 2018 and April 2019*. On the 5th April, BTS headed to Thailand for two nights at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.

The concerts were on the 6th and 7th April 2019. There is a full recording of the second day which I have included here. You can even pick out the song you want to watch from the index. As well as group songs, there is the Jikook Euphoria and Serendipity solos.

On the 7th, after the concert, Jimin also posted on Twitter "I am truly happy that this LY tour ended successfully. It was thanks to our ARMYs who supported us and loved us. We worked hard on this album too, so please look forward to it. Please look forward to the next tour as well. Thank you and love you"

BTS headed back to Seoul the next day but there was no time to relax. As Jimin mentioned in his Tweet they were already gearing up for the release of Map of the Soul: Persona on the 12th April 2019.

The lead song was Boy with Luv featuring Halsey.

This week some of the concept photos for the new album dropped with Jimin looking particularly devastating with peach hair.

This photoshoot also included the Jikook matching Loverboy fits.

Have you noticed how kpop promos lean heavily into oral? It's difficult to miss here what with the toothbrushes, the fruit and even the roses and Jikook aren't even the worst offenders. Look at Namjoon and Hoseok here. Okay okay, my attention has been duly directed. I see what you did there.

On 10th April they headed off to the US to promote the new album.

It really was non-stop!

*A stadium extension to the tour, titled BTS World Tour Love Yourself: Speak Yourself, took place from 4th May 4 to 29th October 2019.

Cara Terbaik Membalas Jasa Guru

Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh dr. Detty.. apa kabar dok? semoga dalam keadaan sehat dokter & keluarga🙏🏻

Terima kasih banyak inspirasi dokter selama ini, terutama percakapan dengan dokter di Melbourne saat 2019. Mungkin dokter lupa namun bagi saya sangat berkesan, sebagai murid yang saat itu sedang exchange namun berkesempatan berdialog bahkan jalan-jalan dengan dokter Detty.. belajar banyaak hal saat itu.

Saya hendak memberi kabar baik dokter, insyaAllah saya akan melanjutkan studi S2. Alhamdulillah saat ini sudah diterima di Harvard Medical School dengan beasiswa LPDP. Mohon doa restu dan nasehat dokter..

Setelah beberapa hari lalu mendapat letter of acceptance dari Harvard, aku mengabari beberapa guru dan dosen. Salah satu dosenku yang kuhubungi adalah dr. Detty Siti Nurdiati, MPH, PhD, SpOG(K).

Beberapa jam kemudian, ada pesan masuk.

Ternyata beliau sedang berada di tanah para Nabi, bumi yang diberkahi Allah. Tanah Syams: Palestina.

“MasyaAllah Tabarakallah. Saya merinding membacanya. Doa terbaik saya untuk dr. Habibah dari tanah para nabi yg diberkahi Allah, Palestina”

Beliau kemudian menambahkan:

Aku yang jadi merinding.

Kilas balik ke 2019 ketika dirizqikan berjumpa beliau di Melbourne tanpa sengaja. Allah memang pembuat skenario terbaik. Saat jauh di negeri seberang justru bisa bertemu secara eksklusif, karena di kampus kami terpisah oleh kesibukan. Hanya dapat mengagumi Director of Cochrane Indonesia ini di kelas, saat lecture-lecture beliau.

"Dulu saya bela-belain menjadi asisten dosen untuk 3 departemen, demi menghidupi diri saat kuliah."

Sore itu, sambil menysuri St. Hilda Beach diiringi angin kencang, Allah mengajarkanku tentang kegigihan.

Kegigihan dr. Detty meniti pendidikan. Dengan latar belakang keluarga beliau yang kurang mampu, dokter Obgyn ini harus berjuang dengan beasiswa sejak bangku sekolah.. hingga S3.

Jadi asdos satu departemen aja berat, ini tiga. Batinku.

Setelah lulus menjadi dokter, beliau mendapat beasiswa dari Dikti untuk studi S2 di Swedia. Maka setelah menyelesaikan program wajib kerja 5 tahun sebagai obsgyn, beliau berangkat. Ternyata, setelah lulus.. beliau ditawarkan melanjutkan S3 oleh pemerintah Swedia.

Wah semangat sekali ya beliau sekolah terus.. MasyaAllah..

Awalnya beliau enggan karena harus meninggalkan anak-anak di Indonesia untuk periode waktu yang panjang. Namun berbekal ridha suami, beliau akhirnya mengambil tawaran tersebut.

Suami saya justru yang memotivasi saya. Kata suami saya: kesempatan tidak datang dua kali.

Alhamdulillah selama perkuliahan beliau diizinkan untuk pulang ke Indonesia dan menemui keluarga. Tidak hanya sekali, dua kali: 4x! dan itu semua dibiayai.

Beliau tersenyum sambil berkata,

Mungkin jarang yaa saat itu, ada seorang wanita, berjilbab pula, yang mau sekolah jauh-jauh (di tempat yang musim dinginnya -44 derajat Celsius).

Maka saya disekolahkan, tanpa harus ada tanggung jawab moral dan syarat mengabdi ke pemerintahan Swedia. Alhamdulillah.

Ternyata dengan niat yang baik, Allah mudahkan beliau mengikuti banyak courses di kota lain di Eropa (Geneva, London, dll.) secara cuma-cuma, selama studi S3 tersebut.

Kami terus mengobrol bahkan ketika di atas tram (kereta listrik di Melbourne). Aku sungkan dan canggung. Maklum, ini kali pertama aku belajar networking. Hehe. Apalagi dengan prestasi dr. Detty yang luar biasa. Minder sekali.

Namun.. beliau adalah dokter yang keibuan, rendah hati dan bersahaja. Terbukti dari hangatnya beliau menyimak cerita-cerita recehku tentang exchange hehe..

Wah, alhamdulillah ya dek masih muda sudah bisa dapat banyak pengalaman di luar negeri. Saya jadi ingat, pertama kali saya berangkat ke luar negeri. Saat itu saya kuliah semester 3. Saya diminta mewakili Indonesia untuk konferensi di Bangkok. Saat berangkat di bandara Adisucipto, saya diiringi seakan saya hendak berangkat haji.

dr. Detty tertawa mengenang ramainya keluarga dan dosen (dosen-dosen legendarisnya FK UGM) yang melepas kepergian beliau saat itu ke bandara. Memang di era tersebut, masih sedikit sekali orang Indonesia yang dapat berangkat ke luar negeri. Apalagi dengan ekonomi keluarganya saat itu.

Pertemuan itu membekas sekali. Aku terharu, juga tertampar. Ya Allah, banyak hal yang perlu kusyukuri. Banyak privilege yang Allah berikan padaku. Hari itu aku membatin, ingin mensyukuri nikmat ini dengan terus menuntut ilmu. Dengan terus mencari ladang amal yang bermanfaat untuk ummat. Hari itu terbersit di hati (dari Allah): semoga bisa bersekolah lagi, jika memang studi tinggi dapat meluaskan kebermanfaatan diriku.

Beliau satu dari sekian banyak guru-guru yang berjasa dalam hidupku.

Seorang kakak dulu mengingatkanku: jasa guru dan dosen tidak akan dapat terbayar,

Maka cara terbaik membalas jasanya adalah dengan mengamalkan ilmu yang diberikannya. Cara terbaik membalas jasanya adalah dengan mendoakannya. Doa agar Allah melipatgandakan kebaikan untuknya dan keluarganya.

Maka jika sekarang aku berdiri di titik ini, tidak lain dan bukan adalah akumulasi dari jasa banyak sekali manusia. Hanya Allah-lah yang dapat membalas kebaikan mereka, keikhlasan mereka.

Selamat terus bertumbuh, merely standing on the shoulders of giants.
