Meet the Band

Die Folk-Pop-Musikerin KT Tunstall hatte vor rund zehn Jahren zwei größere Hits (”Suddenly I See” und “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”), aber seitdem scheint ihre Fangemeinde etwas geschrumpft zu sein. Vielleicht sind auch deswegen zehn Jahre vergangen, seit sie zuletzt in Deutschland auf Tournee war. In Berlin spielt sie im recht kleinen, gemütlichen Frannz Club vor vielleicht 250 Leuten – und ich vermute, dass sie deswegen auch alleine unterwegs ist.

"First, meet the Band”, sagt KT, als sie auf die Bühne kommt. Sie deutet auf die Sampler, Keyboards und Drumcomputer, die sie umgeben. Das passt – einen Teil ihres Erfolgs geht auf Performances von “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” mit Hilfe eines Loop-Pedals (das sie liebevoll ”wee bastard pedal” nennt) zurück. Jetzt gestaltet sie die gesamte, zweistündige Show auf diese Weise: Sie baut sich mit Hilfe der Maschinen um sie herum vor jedem Lied einen Beat mit ein paar Grundharmonien auf, dann erst beginnt der eigentliche Song. Alle Arrangements sind so gestaltet, dass sie durch Hinzufügen und Entfernen einzelner Elemente gut variiert werden können.

“Toll”, denke ich mir. So aufzutreten, wie man es sonst eher von One-Person-Bands kennt, spart Geld und Platz. Es erlaubt außerdem ein intimes Konzert, das auf einen vollen Sound dennoch nicht verzichten muss. Wie lange es dauert, so ein Set zusammenzustellen, frage ich sie nach dem Konzert. Sie meint: Nur vier bis fünf Tage.
