summary:

She’d been free. Freed from a conscience she couldn’t afford to give up again. Free from the grief she’d never actually wanted to abandon, not until the choice was taken from her. But also free from the two brothers that had been taking choices away from her from the moment they’d come to town.

And she didn’t want to give that freedom up. She wouldn’t. Not ever again.

When Elena feels her humanity returning she finds herself focusing on having finally been free from the Salvatore brothers, and doesn't abandon her justified anger. Rebekah had been stubbornly ignoring the sight of Caroline's judgemental eyes on the periphery of her vision for the past three minutes. The younger vampire didn't say anything, and yet the eyes seemed to be getting louder with each passing moment anyway. "What?" she finally snapped, once it became clear that unless she chose to acknowledge it, this might very well continue for the rest of the night. "You're doing it wrong," Caroline informed her. Rebekah tried to remind herself that she actually rather liked the blonde baby-vampire now. Unfortunately, after forty-eight hours of getting subjected to Caroline actively micromanaging every single, last aspect of this particular day... it was rather hard to remember why. She took in a fortifying breath and made herself remember how much she was looking forward to the sight of Bonnie lying beside her on some European beach in that new dark blue bikini Rebekah had seen her packing into a suitcase - an evening with cooling sand beneath them, still-warm light from the sunset playing across the lines and dips of Bonnie's relaxed form; the feeling of Bonnie's hand in her own as Rebekah pulled her into the frothy waves for a midnight swim - and that any new murder attempts on Rebekah's part would instead certainly result in a rather sad and lonely trip through Europe. Killing Caroline wouldn't be worth losing that. Plus Nik would probably bitch about it from now until Earth got swallowed by the expanding hunger of their sun. On the other hand... "It's a marshmallow, how exactly can I be burning it wrong?"

Ooh, my first question. Thank you for asking!

Even though I've watched tvd first, but I prefer the originals to it. So, my answer is going to be mostly about them.

I'm going to do the characters separately.

First, characters from T.O

Elijah Mikaelson (because he was the calm before the storm, I don't know how to describe him, he was just so resilient and holding onto his brother when the entire world could only see a monster in him, and for all his complex layers.) and Hayley Marshall (because she was a BAMF, the best mother you could have) fighting for first place, but none of them can win.

Camille O'Connell because she was such a ray of sunshine. (Caroline stans do not come at me, this is about two characters who have literally never met.)

Freya Mikaelson was such a badass.

Klaus Mikaelson because he had the best retorts and sarcasm.

Gia because she was so down to earth about everything. (Putting her after Klaus feels so wrong lmao.)

Now, Tvd characters. I can't conjure any explanation for them.

Ships.

Haylijah, because have you seen them? The chemistry, the compatibility, the love and all the respect. (S5 never happened.)

Bonenzo because they were so good together, and Enzo actually loved Bonnie and didn't spend his time using her.

Klamille, because Camille could see beyond 'evil Klaus' and understood him like no one else ever did, and Klaus saw so much light in her, and he cared about her.

Steroline because they were also good together.

Gialijah because they had so much chemistry and there was just something about them

Friendships.

Caroline & Enzo, because he stepped up for her and they had something special about them.

Camille & Vincent, because they related to one another after all damage they got because of the Mikaelson family, and they made something good out of it.

Freya & Hayley because they spent years together raising Hope, and they bonded so well.

Stefan and Lexi because they do supportive besties better than anyone.

Bonnie and Damon because they have managed to go from sworn enemies to best friends.

Familial bonds.

Hayley and Hope. No one does mother and daughter better than them.

Elijah and Rebekah. We saw so many times how Elijah cared for her and how she looked up to him. I believe he was her favorite brother, even if the show wanted to make us believe it was Klaus.

Marcel & Davina. They're not family by blood, but the way he was her family more than her real family and tried to protect her meant so much.

Elijah and Hope. We did not get much of them, but they had so much potential. If the show didn't completely destroy Elijah to redeem Klaus, we might have seen him be the best uncle out there.

Freya/ Rebekah and Hope. These aunt/niece relationships were so good. Rebekah cared for her for months, and kept her safe, and Freya raised her with Hayley and taught her so much.

Finding episodes that I genuinely love from beginning to end is difficult.

TO S2E9: The Map of Moments. We had family, we had bickering and we had love.

TVD S3E14: Dangerous Liaisons. We had a ball straight out from a fantasy, do I need to say more?

TO S1E20: A Closer Walk with Thee. It was not a happy episode, but we had our first Haylijah kiss, and it's good enough to be in my top 5.

TO S5E8 : The Kindness of Strangers. As much as I hated S5, but this episode was so good. We saw the Mikaelson family reunited, and every time I watch Elijah break down after remembering Hayley's death, I can't help but cry.

TO S1E1: Always and Forever. This feels like such a basic answer, but I love this episode. It was the beginning of an epic tv show, and it's just so nostalgic.

These are the ones you mentioned, and I can't for the life of me think about anything else to rank. Anyway, I am awkward most of the time, and it includes this answer. So, don't judge me too harshly!

Unpopular TVDU opinions?

1. Stefan is the most toxic person in the entire show, and the underlying point of the show is to show that this self righteous vampire that proposes to be “the good one” is not, and him having to come to terms with the impossibility of moral purity. He himself comes to terms with how he’s been lying to himself and everyone (while Katherine pulls this out of him) and still the fans ignore his own words! He’s constantly lying (to himself and others), manipulating, stigmatizing others to hide his own flaws, treating Elena as if he owns her, all while maintaining the classic toxic masculinity of stoic unemotional brick-faced ness that can only be born out of this christofascist culture. He treats emotions and philosophically fluid concepts such as morality as cold numbers and figures that must abide by his rules. He lets his girlfriend die in the place of her OG trauma family death because “she told him to” save someone he gives no ounce of effort towards giving a shit about otherwise (Matt). And thinks this is morally superior. The most Human thing a person can do is save their loved ones despite their self-effacing nature.

2. Caroline’s placement of moral purity post-vampirism puts her in a “female character box” and we are not given the chance to examine her internal struggles. Struggles such as- being similar to Stefan in Projecting her own flaws into other people to hide behind theirs. Judgmental and annoying in a way that just doesn’t do it for me, I’ve had too many women like her bully me in my life and it really puts to the grave any charm she might have real quick. Post-vampirism the writers allowed her a deep, character-respecting arc of her flaws. All she got close to that was during humanity-off so didn’t really “count.” Her and Stefan getting together really do be the cheerleader and the football player getting together.

3. Klaus is not hot. The Originals arc in TVD was written so boring and whole thing was boring, no soul to the characters

4. Rebecca is a BAMF and would have liked more of her and Damon. She’s my favorite female character besides Rose and bisexual representation 🔥

5. I liked season 5.

6. “Being a ripper” is not an excuse for that person’s actions once they take their first drink knowing what will come from that. Coming from an alcoholic in recovery. An alcoholic that runs over a child is just as culpable to trial as a “normie” (non alcoholic) drunk driver running over a child.

8. I liked the sirebond arc. It is very deep if you actually pay attention.

9. Damon had his humanity mostly off Season 1- beginning of Season 2. Note his denial that he feels human emotions and quotes that he’s pretending to turn it off. Compare his slow resurgence of humanity to Elena’s one-by-one emotion during her humanity resurgence.

10. Dark Elena should have gotten more screen time.

11. Katherine is another example of a female character being put into a box. Female characters that are most liked are always the ones that are either in the “bad” or “pure” (Bonnie, Caroline) box, and both are just as reductive. I’m more interested in when the rare gray woman (Elena) acts out.

Guarantee her one desire, the erasure of the unhinged event from Klaus' and everyone else's mind, during one whole year in exchange for the witch taking possession of the nexus vorti that would come from Rebekah’s inevitable death.

She’d been free. Freed from a conscience she couldn’t afford to give up again. Free from the grief she’d never actually wanted to abandon, not until the choice was taken from her. But also free from the two brothers that had been taking choices away from her from the moment they’d come to town.

When Elena feels her humanity returning she finds herself focusing on having finally been free from the Salvatore brothers, and doesn't abandon her justified anger. Caitlin Snow:

I love her! I understand why people don’t, but I personally do 🥰 especially in the earlier seasons, before Killer Frost’s introduction (post-s3) sidelined her. I loved her storyline with Ronnie (I wish she got to be happy with him forever, he was her only good love interest), and I loved the small moments of female friendship the show would give us between her and the other characters. I even loved the friendship between her, Barry, and Cisco, back when that was a focus of the show. I wish she got more to do in the show tbh, because after s3 her main appeal was really just Killer Frost, and that sucks.

Cisco Ramon:

I love him so so much 🥰 one of my favorite characters for good reason! He’s so amazing and a BAMF when the show lets him be one (he could be more of one too, but alas, he can’t be too much more powerful than Barry, says the show).

As for the “dumbass (affectionate)” square…don’t get it twisted, Cisco is super smart and clever and perceptive, and one of my greatest pet peeves is when someone tries to say otherwise. But he’s also a bit of a dumbass sometimes—not as much as, say, Klaus Hargreeves, but still sometimes. Mostly when he and Barry get up to shenanigans 😂

(And yes, a very smart character can be a dumbass (affectionate) at times)
