This face-off with Balxephon who embodies utilitarianism gone wrong is really the perfect finale to Lawful route which deals with accountability and injustice in time of war.

Denam has come to realize his actions in Balmamusa were wrong (and not even successful) and yet he still seems reluctant to take full responsibility for the role he played. He twists Balxephon’s agressive imagery  “notches in your blade” into a defensive metaphor “the stains on my shield” only to receive praises for his ability to distance himself from his crimes.

Denam’s last thoughts which close Lawful route are written as if to answer Balxephon’s accusations. It gives a last insight into his guilty conscience but still it all ends with a regretful admission he wishes he could simply grow indifferent to it.
