Installation of a wall mounted sink

If you have an older home, you may still have a wall-mounted sink in your kitchen or bathroom. These sinks are generally very durable, but you may need to replace them. A common problem is that the sinks get cracked over time or the surface is completely worn out.

Removing the old wall-mounted sink

Turn off the faucets under the old sink. Put on all protective gear. Lay out a couple of tarps in the work area.

Use pliers if the valves are difficult to turn. Use a faucet wrench to disconnect the supply lines where they connect to the faucet itself.

Disconnect the PVC trap with a pipe wrench. Leave the drain and drain extension in place for now. Leave the rest of the PVC drain connection in place as well.

Remove the drain clamp and pull the lift rod off the drain assembly with needle nose pliers. Do the same with the ball joint that lifts the drain plunger up and down.

Remove the faucet jam nuts with a special faucet wrench that fits in tight spaces, such as behind a sink. Carefully run a utility knife around the base of the faucet to remove any silicone or plumber's putty.

Gently tap the faucet with a rubber mallet until it loosens.

Remove the faucet from the sink

Have a helper hold the sink while you remove the wall brackets that secure the sink to the wall. Use a socket wrench set to do this.

Remove the sink from the wall.

Installing the new wall-mounted sink

On the back of the new sink, measure the position of the drill holes to see if the width between them matches that of the old sink. If they match, you can use the same holes that were already drilled in the wall. If the distances are different, you will need to drill new holes.

Using a tape measure, measure from the bottom of the wall to where you want the new sink to sit. Do this on both sides of the sink. Sometimes you can just use the paint line that the old sink left on the wall. Use a marking pen to mark a horizontal line and make sure it is level.

Have a helper hold the sink against the wall. Install the tabs directly through the holes in the wall sink using the socket set. If you need to install new tabs, mark the mounting holes with a marking pen, remove the sink and prepare to drill new holes.
