Fancy helping me surprise my husband with a fantastic gift?

His XBox One is no longer reading discs. It also likes to randomly disconnect from the internet. The machine is old, and getting it repaired costs more than getting a new one. Thing is, we don't wanna buy a new XBox One when an XBox Series X is available ($500 USD). Series X has a disc drive, Series S does not.

I have the XBox Series X pinned on my Throne wishlist. My hope is, after paying off the medical bills (done) and the Care Credit vet bill ($1300) with quilt sales, I can surprise my husband with an XBox Series X. He can play more of his games and be able to relax...and get Baldur's Gate 3 for XBox because it's something we both wanna play. My PC needs a new graphics card before I can play this game on it, and I haven't the necessary skills (nor money) to install one.

If y'all wanna help me surprise my husband with a gift, you can do so two ways:

Ideally, I would have the funds by February. February was once the worst months of the year for me. Something traumatizing happened to me, resulting in PTSD and me, more or less, avoiding everyone and everything. That has changed over the last five years, and now it's just another month. It would be nice to celebrate it with a gift for him. Plus, there's the benefit of him being able to play more of his games.

Yes, we each have separate consoles. He also has his own room with his DnD stuff, a sofa, desk, TV, XBox, films, and games. Separate spaces is vital for us, and has made a massive difference.

After he has his gift, and I'm not telling him about this because I wanna make a surprise, I'll focus on putting all my funds towards paying off the new water heater. An XBox Series X for myself is definitely a yes, later in 2024, because I wanna play Baldur's Gate 3. Plus, other new games are coming out that will require a new console. Maybe we'll be able to get the console for my 41st bday in June? We shall see!

just having free agency to move around in much larger groups of people by myself in general (as a kid in california this experience was mandatory, as an adult in tennessee this experience costs a lot of money and also usually involves friends who expect me to stick with them the whole time)

living somewhere WITH fences and WITHOUT "i will shoot you if you come onto my property" culture, both of which resulted in an overall better experience for Walkers

an incomplete list of things i have right now that i will miss if/when i do not have them later:

my roommates are incredibly generous and supportive and have helped a lot when ive had money problems

baldur is curled up on my keyboard and occasionally stands up, turns around and lays back down

both of my roommates laugh really loudly from their respective rooms at regular intervals

friend group chats are fairly active right now

the sound of cicadas is really relaxing

there were no dangerous storms for the past few days, so i have been able to go outside for basically any excuse

i have all the medications i need right now

i have my allergen-free spice mix that i can use anytime

i did a lot of laundry today and my back doesn't hurt. my back will hurt soon because i am about to do dishes, so i really have to enjoy this right now.

i am reading a library book about regional witchcraft right now. it is amazing. i will have to give it back, which is a little sad. i want to buy a copy one day when i have the money

i am not yet tired of the songs i am learning right now

all of my devices are currently functional

in general, my pain levels have been pretty bearable for the past month or so

our folding table is really helpful and not THAT bent yet

big lamp with daylight bulb keeps me sane

tall, thin, blessed candle that i got as a gift from a priestess will one day be used up or lost or broken

i have lots of art supplies right now

i have something specific to look forward to that is guaranteed to happen and that i can prepare for all i like in any way i want, but ultimately i'll still "succeed" in some basic way as long as i show up

the thing about karlach's ending that pisses me off is that it doesn't make sense if you do everything you can for her though. the gondians are master workers of infernal iron, and if you liberate the house of hope, and make sure dammon lives, you have all the ingredients needed to help karlach's condition improve. it simply doesn't make sense for her to say that she will NEVER EVER go back to avernus even when you have a safe place to set up an independent hellforge and work on a new non-explosive heart replacement. it frustrated me immensely that in my playthrough because i didn't choose to romance her and i had wyll become a baldur's gate bigwig, she chose actively to explode and die... when i had everything i needed to save her life. to go on the terminal illness theme, it felt to me like she had cancer and i had chemo and she was rejecting it and choosing to die horribly instead of get it treated... which totally does happen IRL, but isn't exactly FAIR to her as a character. it's good writing because it makes me engage emotionally with it to this level but it's frustrating because i felt like i should have been able to save her with the pieces available in the game.

this is all also leaving aside that gale has a scroll of true resurrection in his fuckening satchel. WHY can't i immediately use it on Karlach after she 'plodes lol is Gale really that selfish?

okay fuck it, I'll bite. yeah, it IS unfair and frustrating and she doesn't deserve any of it, and that was kinda the whole point and it's why I think they did such a good job with Karlach's arc. because, again, it was a pretty clear metaphor for terminal illness and the associated grief/helplessness/denial/scrambling for solutions that comes with dealing with it. your chemo metaphor is interesting because as you've mentioned people DO often choose not to go through chemo, because chemo itself is miserable and draining and wrecks your body and is not guaranteed to work, and some people would prefer to just remain as active and present as possible for as long as possible and then go out when it's time, especially if the cancer is aggressive and terminal and chemo may not do much. kind of like going to Avernus would be miserable and draining and dangerous, and Karlach stated many times how much she hates Avernus and would rather die than go back. how on earth does it not make sense that she wouldn't choose that, especially believing as she did that she would immediately be shanghaied back into Zariel's service indefinitely after so many years of being desperate for freedom.

though ironically, people in real life sometimes react to cancer patients choosing not to do chemo or other procedures that suck/are invasive and awful the same way you're reacting to Karlach not wanting to go to Avernus. sometimes, and for some people, it's not about just extending your life as far as possible at any cost. there's a point at which it isn't worth it, and that point is different for everyone. and BOY does that make some folks upset when a loved one's "it's not worth it" point is different from theirs. It's why DNR is a thing, and it's also why you should think very carefully about who you want making medical decisions for you if you're incapacitated and have a talk with that person/clear instructions written up.

I already mentioned in the post that they sort of dropped the ball on not explaining why all those potential avenues don't work so I don't know what you expect me to say about that, but I stand by my previous statement of "all I really need them to say is 'yeah the gondians agree, this thing is fucked' and I'll accept that." I would love for them to add that in. but I don't think it should be fixable.

finally, considering that the scroll of true resurrection was intended to be used on Gale during that quest, yes it's on Larian for letting you revive him in other ways and keep the thing, but it's still metagame-y and I don't think it qualifies as a plot hole so much as a game design flaw. it annoys me when people bring up "why didn't they account for my cheesing in the story" arguments as writing critiques.

Get to know my OCs: NPC relationships

Sentry Ojeda:

- was in love with Gortash as the leader of the Bhaalist cult.

-Before he found out he was a Bhaalspawn and led the cult, he spent some of his childhood at the temple of Ilmater and considered Father Lorgan a father figure.

-Had close friendships with a lot of the workers at Sharess' Caress because they accepted him without judgement. Considered Ffion a mother figure.

-Gets along well with Dammon and enjoys talking shop with him.

-Considers Rolan one of his best friends, but mainly because it really annoys Rolan that he does.

-Understands Barcus Root and becomes a good friend of his when he realizes that the way he used to be Gortash's boyfriend now feels an awful lot like what Barcus has going on with Wulbern now that Sentry is working towards redemption.

-Raphael gives him bad vibes, he only realizes why when he remembers Gortash.

-Dame Aylin is his very best friend and coolest older sister figure ever. He basically idolizes her.

-Bothering Ketheric was his hobby when he was Bhaal's chosen.

-Looks up to Zevlor as who he wishes his father was.

Jaina Thalassia:

-Doesn't like Ulder Ravengard and considers him a bad parent, tolerates him for Wyll's sake, rescued him for Wyll's sake when she realized how sad he was that his freedom cost his father's life after she convinced him he deserved freedom.

-Just a complete catty bitch to Mizora. This is where we see the most influence from Yennefer of Vengerberg in her characterization. She is dismissive of the cambion and things she's vain and overconfident.

-Hates Raphael and is highly wary of his behavior towards Mol. As a teacher she knows all the Red flags she's seeing.

-Close friends with Bex, Alfira, Lakrissa, and Lia. She's missed having Tiefling friends since she started working in Baldur's Gate.

-Although she's probably younger than Rolan by a couple of years, she feels protective of him because she's met Lorroakan and knows he's a prick and a terrible teacher.

-Devoted to the tiefling children. In the absence of her own students, she feels responsible for these kids.

-Strikes up a friendship with Aylin and Isobel. She usually doesn't trust female Elves or humans(Aasimar are close enough in her mind) because of her coworkers but she's pleasantly surprised to find one she gets along with outside her party.

-Awkward around Zevlor because she's realized he's the tiefling paladin her dad had a fling with when he was younger and traveling as an adventuring paladin

Ghustil Kroger:

-Admires Kithrak Voss and will generally trust what he has to say.

-it's on sight with Auntie Ethel. Some of his companions may find her amusing, but that's medical malpractice she's committing and he takes that seriously.

-Kind of clings a bit to Isobel for guidance and information about Selune when Vlaakith abandons him.

-Still hasn't forgiven Nettie for trying to poison him, which is also medical malpractice.

-Really miffed at how Inspector Valyria doesn't seem to want to do her job.

-Finds Rolan incredibly attractive but unlike how easily he was able to approach Wyll, he can't really do the same with Rolan, so he's an arrogant dick right back to him.

Gish Octavia:

-Thinks Auntie Ethel is her friend and their fights are a game of sorts

-Was planning to kill Lorroakan the second he was rude so she could steal half his library.

-Alfira is probably her favorite person in the world.

-Actually Lucretious might be.

-Wishes she could meet Mystra so she could stand up to her for Gale.

-Thinks of Rolan as a fun academic rival.

-Isn't so sure why her 'siblings' are so quick to trust Voss when Vlaakith herself has already betrayed them.

Jackal:

-Actually appreciates Raphael and has him on his list of potential people to follow.

-Considers the same for Cazador if Astarion won't accept him.

-Tolerates Orin because she also hates Sentry.

-Views people like the Drow Twins as pathetic and an insult to his people. Same for Araj Oblodra.

Chapter 244: Everything Else Can Wait

Law watched Jun and Ikkaku on deck as they hugged. It was good to see them finally starting to be normal again. The drama from the past few days had been affecting the whole crew’s morale, which had already been low due to Ruby being gone. 

The crew was still working through it. Everyone had gone back to almost normal. The sea shanties were back, the rowdy pub nights were back, stupid, avoidable injuries while horsing around was back. It was almost perfect. Almost.

Ruby was still gone and Law wasn’t far off from leaving either. He had a feeling that everyone on the Tang was just really good at playing pretend. Maybe everyone was just trying to avoid the inevitable loss of their captain. Law knew he was trying to act like he was fine and nothing was bothering him.

Law sighed and looked back to the spot in the sea he was fishing in. He watched the ripples in the water and the sun reflecting on the surface. It was getting no bites while everyone else seemed to be doing well. Maybe they had left that island too early. Sure, it would have cost them more money, but buying some steaks would have been a break from staring at the ocean fruitlessly for hours.

He heard a sigh and someone sat next to him. He didn’t bother looking over but his frown did deepen, knowing he was about to have to talk instead of moping silently.

“I think the dark energy you’re giving off is scaring away the fish,” Penguin said lightheartedly. Law rolled his eyes but said nothing. “Would you like a beer?” Law grunted and Penguin sighed in response. “You’re not doing a very good job at acting like you’re okay.”

“When have I ever been “okay?”” Law asked him monotone.

“Hmmm,” Penguin hummed out like he was actually thinking about it. “Well…”

“That was rhetorical.”

Penguin grinned. “I’m just saying that you should be happy that you’re still here and with us.”

Law sighed and rubbed his face because Penguin was correct. He should spend the rest of the time he had left with his crew being happy. He shouldn’t mope around. 

Yet here he was, moping around and feeling sorry for himself. 

Penguin sighed, his seemingly positive aura fading away with his smile. “I was really hoping that Ruby had been just drunk,” he mumbled.

Law ears perked up and he looked at Penguin. “Come again?”

Penguin’s lips twitched. “It’s probably nothing but…” he looked around and Law did the same, realizing that Penguin was about to tell him something private. They looked back at each other when they both felt like they were able to have a private conversation.

“What do you have to say?” Law prompted, trying to sound neutral and not at all irritated or anxious.

“There was a time…when we had gone to a pub but you stayed on the Tang. Ruby got drunk and I wanted to walk her home to make sure she didn’t fall in the ocean. She was so drunk. I can’t remember the last time I had ever seen her so drunk. I guess it was before you two, you know,” he pushed his two index fingers together like that was supposed to mean something.

“Alright…your point?”

“She, and let me emphasize how drunk she really was, said that you were planning on dying in Dressrosa.” Law remained silent and looked back to the ocean. “She was so drunk and started crying, you know how much of a crybaby she is, so I just wrote it off as her being anxious about you leaving, but…” he trailed off. “I started thinking about how I’ve been in your life longer, how much longer I’ve known you. We’ve been together for so much. We’ve fought and made up, we’ve experimented in kitchens and labs, you trained me in the medical field, I feel like I should know by now when you’re going off to die.”

Law clenched his jaw and reeled in his fishing line. “What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to tell me that Ruby was just drunk and that I'm an idiot for even thinking of believing her.”

“Then Ruby was just drunk and you’re an idiot for believing her.”

Penguin frowned deeply. “Why do you want to die?”

Law sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I never said that I wanted to die. You know how Ruby gets, she gets weepy and anxious. Why do you think I always try to keep her from getting totally wasted.”

Penguin turned to look at the ocean. He sighed. “You must think I’m an idiot.”

“I don’t.”

“Then why lie? I really am an idiot for not realizing it earlier. Maybe I could’ve stopped you.”

“Nothing can stop me. I’ve made my decision to go and I’m going. Especially now that Ruby is waiting for me.” Law stood up, no longer wanting to be a part of this conversation.

“Yeah,” Penguin said distantly. “Ruby is waiting for you. Trying to stop you from your suicide mission.” Law ignored him and started to walk away. “I’ll keep this from the crew, some of us aren’t as emotionally mature as me and can handle the fact their captain wants to die.”

Law didn’t respond and continued to walk. Of course Ruby blabbed to Penguin when she was drunk off her ass. Penguin was right, he was one of the more mature and stable members and Law knew that Ruby felt extremely safe around Penguin. 

So now two people he loved knew he hadn’t planned on coming home. Law should be thankful that Penguin was going to keep quiet. If anyone else found out there would be a problem. He couldn’t imagine how Bepo would react to finding out that nugget of information. 

Law walked into the kitchen and towards the coffee pot. He sighed when he saw it was empty. He debated with himself whether to start up a new pot or to just take some caffeine pills. He did buy all those bottles from that last island after all.

He heard Clione cleaning the appliances in the kitchen. He stated it had been time for a deep clean and that he was going to make sure everything sparkled by dinner. He flexed his fingers and turned to walk out of the kitchen. 

“Need a snack, Captain?” He heard Clione call after him.

“Ah, no,” Law scratched the back of his head. “I was looking for coffee.”

“Sorry, Cap! I cleaned out the pot. Ran vinegar through it and everything!”

Law relaxed. “No big deal. I’ll get out of here so you can continue with your deep clean.”

“Thanks!”

Law wandered out of the kitchen and found himself in front of his bedroom door. He stared at it with a lonely look on his face. If Ruby was here she would’ve made him a pot of coffee and a snack. She would have brought him to bed to take a nap together. He took in a deep breath and let out the loudest and most pathetic sigh he thought he had ever done. He slouched and hung his head low, making sure he looked as pathetic and sad as he felt. He wanted Ruby. He wanted to play with her hair and listen to her talk about nail polish for an hour.

He took another deep breath and stood up straight, He rotated his neck around and cracked his knuckles. Alright. He was done being a depressed sea slug. He was going to return to the deck and fish with his crew. He turned to walk away, his shoes squeaking against the floor, when he paused. He heard…

His head whipped around and he threw open his bedroom door. He stared at the ringing den den mushi with an almost crazed expression. He rushed to the snail and took three breaths. He picked up the receiver and cleared his throat.

“Hello?”

The line was silent for a moment and Law had never felt more anxious. “Hey,” a romantic voice came out of the snail. “It’s me.”

Law gripped the receiver and let out a breath. “Ruby,” he croaked, unable to stop his rapidly beating heart. “What took you so long to call?”

Ruby was silent again before she sighed. “You said to wait to call you until I was safe, alone, and on Dressrosa, didn’t you?” She asked in a hushed but amused voice. “It’s about 3:00 in the morning here,” she yawned. 

Law wanted to say that she could have waited until she had slept to call but Law was also an incredibly selfish man and was unbelievably happy to hear her accent again. He picked up the snail and walked to the bed. He sat down on the bed and sighed. “It’s the middle of the day here,” he said. “How are you holding up?”

“I’m…alright,” she said. “I miss everyone.”

“Everyone misses you, too. Ikkaku especially. She’s been a brat about it.”

Ruby chuckled. “She didn’t cause too much trouble did she?”

“You have no idea,” he grumbled and Ruby chuckled again. 

“I miss you,” she said. “I hate sleeping alone.”

Law felt himself smile. “Doesn’t surprise me. You’re a big baby.” He briefly thought about when she hated sleeping around people.

“Rude,” she mumbled. “I have no real updates for you, hon. I just arrived earlier today and spent all day just trying to find a place to stay for the next…well…you know…”

“Yeah, I do,” he sighed. “You can worry about all that after you’ve slept and had a good meal.”

“Yeah,” she yawned again. “I will.”

“Why don’t you do that now?” He said, like he didn’t want to just talk to her for the next five hours.

“Not yet.” He could hear the smile on her face. “I want to say “hi” to everyone.”

Law’s eyes softened as he stared up at the ceiling. “Yeah, you probably should. I think they’d throw me overboard if they found out you called and I didn’t let them talk to you.”

Ruby giggled in response. “I love you, Law.”

Law paused when he felt tears blur his vision. He looked down at the snail and smiled. “I love you, too, Ruby.”

After Law wiped his face to make sure no embarrassing tears marked it, and after he grabbed Clione, he walked on deck with the den den mushi .

“Everyone,” he called in his clear, “captain voice.” Everyone turned to look at him curiously. Their eyes landed on the den den mushi in his hands and he felt the morale of his crew grow to new heights. 

“Ruby!!” They exclaimed and rushed over to Law. 

Law grinned as he heard Ruby laugh and saw his crew tear up in joy. They could talk about the plan later. They could talk about work later. That wasn’t important right now. Just listening to her voice was all he wanted.

Nearly three weeks later, Law had heard Ruby’s beautiful voice. Everything else could just wait.

2023 was a year of major change for me. at the beginning of it my husband was finishing up a month long stay at the cancer Institute and undergoing some potentially fatal treatment I am grateful he made it home safe to me and our pets, Gideon and Tink. due to sky high costs of the medical treatment even with help from precious people through our gofundme we had to downsize majorly on our home to a much smaller place. my husband's healing from treatment turned into another disaster by developing graft vs host disease which I was surprised could happen since he was given his own stem cells back to him but bodies can be strange. we found some medication combinations that work and also take their toll but for now it's manageable. we suffered loss of loved ones this year as well. our dear cat Tink had a freak brain tumor and passed away with myself, my husband and Gideon around her. she knew she was loved and for 6 years she completed our little family. loved relatives and friendships passed on. life moves on and relationships shift. I was able to heal in my own ways this year .I conquered my fear of driving and got my license a month before turning 35 (never too late!) and that's give me a lot more freedom to rely on myself and spend time with Gideon around town as evidence by all of our photos together this year. I was able to attend my first Heilung ritual with my girlfriend Ami Mercury it was a powerful experience I am still reeling from months after. some day I do hope to see them at red rocks venue. I let myself enjoy hobbies more and reacquainted myself with comic books (Deadpool and Ironman) and my first video game play since 2005. I'm sure you've noticed around my social media accounts that I'm trapped under the massive rock that is Baldur's gate 3. so much fun and so impressive. video games sure have come a long way!! overall I'm making healthier choices for myself and intend to keep doing so in 2024. I appreciate each and every one of you who have stuck by me over the years despite transitions and challenges and cannot wait to see what the future holds for us all.
