There's one Spectra and Gus episode I need to talk about.
So we’re all familiar with how Gus and Spectra’s dynamic remained almost unchanged throughout NV – Spectra’s blinded by his pursuit for power so much so that there is a visible neglect in how his relationships with other characters develop; so is the case for his relationship with Gus. BUT there have been a few hints and moments between them that hold potential for growth and scratch the surface of something more than only a master and loyal right-hand dynamic – their time on Earth, the jacket scene, Spectra apologizing for the first and only time in this entire season and he does it to Gus – but now I’m going to mention an episode that is the perfect example for the small changes that Gus and Spectra go through individually and as a pair.
I’m talking about ep. 33 of NV.
It’s a good opportunity to point out how the eng ver of the title - Brontes’ betrayal – completely misses the point of the episode. Because episode 33 as the jp title says, is actually centered around feelings – specifically the feeling of love and the many forms that it can take.
There’s the example of family love shown in the scene of Baron and his younger siblings.
Then, through Klaus’ words, the bond between the brawlers is another form of love and it’s the source of their strength, something that at the moment Spectra can’t comprehend.
And the 3rd form of love would be the bond that Bakugan and their partner share – it’s an example of strong devotion and trust and it’s shown through Volt’s remorse and attempt at reaching Brontes’ heart.
Through this episode Spectra and Gus go through their own separate missions in which they are both faced with examples of these strong feelings.
From Spectra’s pov, his plan of catching the brawlers by surprise fails, instead he meets Klaus, who talks about the importance of love and how Spectra lacks it. Spectra thinks he can prove everyone wrong and change history itself, for the time being he doesn’t have the patience to listen to a stranger’s babble about feelings.
First thing he does when he returns on the ship is look around and call out Gus. Why did they feel the need to include this small moment? Perhaps because after being betrayed by the Vexos, Gus is the only person Spectra can trust; without Gus, he is completely alone at this point of the season. So perhaps this scene is included to show how Gus has grown to be an important person in Spectra’s life. Perhaps. We shall never know.
On the other side, Gus witnesses Volt actively giving his all to make Brontes forgive him and come back to his side. Volt fights with everything he has and Gus finds it foolish and unnecessary. But at the end of the battle, Gus says this:
This is the moment Gus realizes the sacrifice Volt was ready to make for Brontes and it’s something he is always ready to do as well when it comes to Spectra (a great foreshadowing for what he does in episode 39). He recognizes these strong feelings but it’s not certain he knows how to name them.
To sum it all up, this episode brings out the emotional side of some characters and the importance of their bonds and connections. Spectra and Gus seem to have a lot to learn about these feelings and so through these experiences they reach their own conclusions. Spectra is yet to admit he needs friends, closure, he needs Gus more than he cares to admit and only after he loses him several episodes later, does he realize it. It would have been nice to get a glimpse of Spectra remembering his conversation with Klaus later on when he feels the absence of Gus or when he decides to join the brawlers. But alas! These are the crumbs we have to work with 😭
Thanks for reading my rant!! I tried to keep it as short as possible cuz I could write a whole dissertation about these 2 🫡
#spectra x gus#gus grav#spectra phantom#bakugan#rambles#I rarely post rambles but this is what brainrotting does from me#no I'm not overanalyzing shuusshhh#the creators gave us so little that we gotta find the subtext to the subtext

Vvv_0_|_7 or Volt (meaning graceful), 8'10''. he/[they], tank build
Volt is still on the taller side for a full grown t-vestal. the ends of his powerful primary limbs are about as large as dinner plates and if he swiped you with his secondary limb your measly human skull would probably be shattered immediately. fortunately all vestal buildings use triple reinforced titanium for their extremely large specimens!
Interestingly enough, volt has had his vestigial limb completely removed, which arouses suspicion in his loyalties to the monarchy. In his interviews, however, he states that he simply has a very strong sense of personal style...yeah right, the rumor forums say.
previously ranked second of all vestals and number 1 of the haos leaderboards, he has been fighting with shadow over the spot of number two for many seasons, but his controlled battling style paired with a very calm demeanor means that he is very rarely thrown off by shadow's shenanigans.
[they] were actually the one that beat gus so bad [they] had to return gus's bakugan off camera, which was very embarrassing for gus, but it hinted that volt may be more honorable than he lets on. his human illusion holds the usual pitfalls of no ears or hands or feet, with later fixes to his eyes came after finding out that dan was freaked out by them. I guess he felt bad.
I like that his design has black and white in it, i think you can definitely make a connection between his outfit and brontes, who was the first haos bakugan i've ever seen change attribute (to darkus, no less!!)
brawlers' comments:
He's surprisingly chill. I've actually had some conversations with him where we don't end up fighting. I think with enough time he can even come over to our side. He already really respects bakugan (or just brontes?) as fighters, but maybe not as intelligent beings. Honestly I don't even know if he considers humans as intelligent beings, but he definitely doesn't talk down to us like gus or mylene. obviously I don't know how other species would "define personhood". He's still a part of the Vexos, so if the time calls for it, I'll have to defeat him.
-Dan
I've never considered [Vvv_0_|_7] to join the Resistance because [they] were simply too high profile to really "hide underground". But I believe [they] are similar to [A<E], it's just a shame the Vexos got to [them] first. If [they] remain on the side of the Vexos, it does not matter what [they] truly believe in, because at the end of the day [they] are still working towards the destruction of New Vestroia. [They] are quite a fearsome brawler as well. I've never seen a Bakugan like [Brontes], [they]'re flexibility is unmatched and allows [them] to take advantage of...honestly any of [their] opponent's strategies.
-M/RA
I don't believe [Vvv_0_|_7] has gotten any gene editing except for removing the [vestigial limb]. It's almost unbelievable how prehistoric [their] build is. I've never seen such a form outside of archeological records. I'm not saying it's inherently [good] or [bad]...there's no such thing as a [bad] build. That being said it's interesting why [they] chose to remove their [vestigial limb]. Vestals usually keep it because the royal family holds them. I have no [love] for the royal family, which is why I took mines out, but what is the reasoning for a member of the Vexos to do the same?
-A<E

Camp Vestroia things!
that’s right, I’m finally posting some headcanons for my AU
-Shun and Skyress are siblings, and Ingram is their cousin.
-Shun writes letters to his mom about camp, even though he knows she’ll never read them(on account of being dead)
-Helios and Drago are rivals who basically constantly fight to outdo each other
-Klaus’ family owns the camp on the first place
-Tigrerra exists, but unlike the other OG guardian Bakugan, she is the local stray cat. Brontes takes the place of counselor
-Preyas has a mullet. You may hate it, but I feel like it makes sense
-Skyress loves letting Shun deal with his own problems even when she could totally help. She does this because she thinks Shun gets too attached to people sometimes and wouldn’t know how to go on without them. Also, it’s funny.
-The Aquos cabin entirely ignores their counselors. They set up a democratic government. Preyas and Elfin are just there.

mylene is so interesting to me bc like. she just chucks elico out as soon as she gets a mechanical replacement with macubass. and i think she's the only villain so callous about their guardian bakugan???
most villains still care about their bakugan and usually actually share the same goals and are on the same wavelength, birds of a feather and all that. like even characters like kazarina, cruel as she is, still are fond of their guardian bakugan. and theres characters like spectra and barodius who's plans center around their guardian bakugan, and are actively encouraged by those bakugan.
even characters who's guardian bakugan dont necessarily get along with them all the time, like avior and mason's constant bickering, are still friends. meanwhile mylene just. throws elico out. and also takes brontes from volt and throws him out as well. i think whats also interesting, since the show likes to bring up spectra and mylene parallels, is how spectra uses machines to upgrade and evolve helios, while mylene outright replaces elico with a machine.
but it's not like she's shown to be like. completely heartless either. she calls volt her friend even though she threw out brontes beforehand. she stands up for hydron when zenoheld takes his anger out on him. she has some weird friendship with shadow prove.
i think she was the vehicle to show the general vestal opinion on bakugan, since mylene only sees her bakugan as weapons and when she loses she blames the loss on them. (meanwhile i think volt is supposed to show that not all vestals are THAT bad, even if they are part of the king's entourage of fucked up teenage celebrity theatre kids). and i think she's very interesting bc of that. anyways i love mylene.
#mylene farrow#bakugan new vestroia#lync and shadow prove can also be considered this to a lesser extent??? but they've never had a guardian bakugan#so the comparisons aren't as strong#they probs dont have guardian bakugan for the same reason mylene threw elico out#i think lync is more representative of nv's overarching theme of loyalty. as is shadow prove.#and obvs spectra gus and hydron too#obvs mylene and volt are too but like i dont think that's their main purpose#i think they're more supposed to represent vestal society as a whole#i feel like this went off on a slight tangent or something?? this is just how my thoughts work im adhd#interestingly i think the time when spectra is at his worst is when he steals drago#after he steals drago he kinda sorta starts ignoring helios a little?? kinda replaces helios with drago???#so he replaces one bakugan with another thats seemingly more powerful and can only follow orders. sounds familiar??#love that tbh. i love villains. they're so interesting.#also i could probably write a post even longer than this about nv's theme of loyalty regarding the vestals#but thats neither here nor there lmao. always happy to ramble#anyways also happy lesbian visibility day from ur local bakugan loving aro lesbian#also this post ended up being far longer than i expected but i have brainrot sooooo#ANYWAYS BYEEEEEEEEE might go watch nv i love that season if u cant tell

You have a Bakugan form made in your likeness. The catch? You must have at least ONE of the awful, terrible, no-good 'quirks/gimmicks' that some of the toys have had in the past (eg, Alto Brontes Disease, big ugly figures, etc). How do you proceed?
I would be totally fine if they made one (1) Mechtogan for the Bakugan reboot, and it’s an accurate 3D laser scan of my entire body.

I did feel it was jarring that with how Gus treated Volt and Brontes, only episodes later in his match with Zenoheld, he seemed suddenly emotionally close to his Bakugan. I felt like a few scenes were missing with Gus's guilt with how he treated Volt and Brontes transferring to him getting to know and becoming closer to his Bakugan.
yeah, it's a real shame. this part of s2 is really aggravating to me because there's little to no setup for that payoff to happen. gus and spectra just suddenly care about the bakugan, even though they did horrible experiments on them. there's no self reflection, no moral dilemma, nothing.
you could argue that episode 33 sets it up, what with volt being confronted with his hypocrisy in carrying out bakugan genocide while also seeing brontes as more than just a tool, as well as gus being baffled by volt's display of loyalty towards his former partner and choosing to set brontes free, but that's also all there is to it. after this episode, volt still helps the vexos eradicate the bakugan and the only reason why spectra and gus help the brawlers prevent it is because doing so is in their best interest (if they don't help, they'll lose drago's perfect core and they might lose helios, too.) nothing else mattered to them.
i think more than anything, gus was surprised to see elico, hexados and vulcan risk their lives for him in episode 39, especially considering how he viewed bakugan as no more than tools. he chastised volt and brontes for caring about each other and called it a weakness, only for him to be saved because multiple bakugan cared about him enough to sacrifice themselves for him.
personally, i don't think gus deserved to have three bakugan lay down their lives for him but if the deaths of elico and hexados had forced him to reevaluate the way he viewed bakugan as lifeforms, i would've been okay with how episode 39 played out (even though the ideal scenario for me is gus dying lol.) after all, gus was imprisoned shortly after, and had all the time in the world to think of what he did to them. but as it stands, we're given no insight into gus' thoughts other than "i must help master spectra" and "if master spectra considers the brawlers his allies, then so do i." and that's pretty disappointing.
