Salman Khan’s Diwali release Tiger 3 is nearly a week away and the excitement is tremendous. What’s interesting is that it’ll have a solo release of sorts, as no other Hindi or Pan-India South film is clashing on the same day. In fact, Salman Khan has not faced a clash since 2010. The last time that happened was when his 2009 action super-hit film Wanted was released on the same day as Rani Mukerji-starrer Dil Bole Hadippa.

Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012), Jai Ho (2014), Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Sultan (2016), Tubelight (2017), Race 3 (2018), Bharat (2019), Dabangg 3 (2019) and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023) released with no competition. Antim (2021) faced a collision with Satyameva Jayate 2 (2021) but then it didn’t feature the superstar in the lead.

Other stars haven’t been that fortunate. Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale (2015) and Raees (2017) were released alongside Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Kaabil (2017) respectively. SRK is at his best position arguably right now and yet, his next film Dunki will have to share screens with Salaar on Christmas 2023. Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha clashed with Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan last year. Salman’s last few films have not done well and yet, no one is ready to come on the same Friday as him.

We asked trade experts about this rare phenomenon. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “He has a huge following and is a darling of the masses. The business he has generated over a period of time in mass pockets is phenomenal. Though he has had a rough patch, he's the pied piper of Bollywood.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan, in agreement, exulted, “Salman is a very big hero of the masses. He has always had such a huge fan following; Shah Rukh Khan ka aisa following ab bana hai. Aamir Khan never had such a mass pull. Salman’s craze is one of a kind. Hence, filmmakers are wary of clashing their films with him. Itna bada hero hai, kaun takkar lega iske saath?”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, remarked, “Salman is the only superstar who people want to see on screen. He has the maximum on-screen superstardom out of all the actors. It’s a very critical factor. He’s also not on our social media every time, going to malls, opening ribbons, dancing, etc.”

He continued, “Unfortunately his films have not worked as he hasn’t paid much attention to the storytelling, packaging, direction, etc. He has that power that if he gets these things right, then there’s no stopping him. That’s why many are wary of clashing with him as they know that at least in the opening weekend, their film will get butchered.”

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise cinema hall in Jaipur, explained, “Salman Khan is an action hero. When no one was doing action, he was the only action excelling in this genre. Somewhere, his confidence shook and he also did non-action films like Tubelight (2017), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), etc. Only Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) worked in this regard. But even when his films were gadbad, they still made Rs. 100 crores plus. There was a time when the hit films of Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn did Rs. 100 crores. But Salman’s flop films do Rs. 100 crores even today! And his hit films have done more than Rs. 300 crores. It’s thanks to him that the industry realized the true potential of a Hindi film. Hence, clashing with him can prove suicidal.”

He also said, “He’s 100% an organic star. Even Sunny Deol is.”

Girish Johar added, “If he moulds himself to the sensibilities that cater to his fans and also provides intelligent content, then sky is the limit. I think Tiger 3 will do well. It ticks all the right boxes.”

Taran Adarsh also said along the same lines, “Tiger 3 being a brand and essaying a role that is much-loved, I am sure it’ll have a great run and a huge opener.”

TUBELIGHT STORY : Laxman Singh Bisht (Salman) is nicknamed tube light by his neighbours because he is feeble-minded. Despite being special, Laxman lives by one life-lesson; keep your faith alive and you can do almost anything, even stop a war.

TUBELIGHT REVIEW : At the outset, one must warn people that Tubelight is a departure from your regular Salman Khan mass entertainers. Here Bollywood’s darling-star plays a child-man who doesn’t take off his shirt or flex his biceps. So the audience going in for this one, must first invest belief (or should that be disbelief?) in this age of innocence offering from Kabir Khan, whose past outings Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan were more commercially-wired.

Tubelight inspired by the Hollywood film Little Boy directed by Alejandro Monteverde, is told with a fable-like simplicity. Set in Jagatpur, a pretty North-Indian town, during the Indo-China war, the locals are mostly hangers on, who have little to do except laugh at Laxman’s antics or berate him. Banne Chacha(Om Puri) mentors him, imparting Gandhian gyaan at every given opportunity. Narayan (Mohd Zeeshan) is the local bully who slaps the hero around without provocation, making the slaps sting less and irritate more. Things brighten up a bit when the drop-dead gorgeous Liling(Zhu Zhu) and perky Guo(Matin), who are Chinese immigrants move to Jagatpur. But even this track seems conveniently-placed just to evoke the Hindi-Chini bhai bhai sentiments.

The war sequences are poorly mounted and evoke no emotion because the filmmaker hasn’t invested in it either through evocative writing or mind-numbing montages.

The film that propagates the values of family, faith and patriotism doesn’t manage to take a complete leap of faith because somewhere someone couldn’t pull this one off convincingly. In fact, everything is so cloyingly sweet that you start feeling you’ve strolled into a sermon rather than a Salman movie. Pritam’s Naach Meri Jaan and Sajan Radio are magical, as is Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo as magician, Go-Go Pasha. Aseem Mishra’s camera work is largely-breathtaking.

When it comes to performances–Salman laughs and cries unselfconsciously, unraveling the lesser-seen side of his macho image. He cannot move mountains with his performance but he manages to keep the faith alive. Sohail is sincere. Zhu Zhu shows spunk and young Matin entertains. And, Om Puri reminds you of the mettle unsung heroes are made of.

The film has proved to be the 16th film of Salman Khan to enter the Rs. 100 crore club at the domestic box office, making it the highest ever for an actor in India. What makes this feat even bigger is the fact that Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is the 16th consecutive Rs. 100 crore film for megastar Salman Khan.

Salman’s affair with the Rs. 100 crore club started way back in 2010 with Dabanggand since then it has been no looking back. Dabangg was followed by Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Jai Ho, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Sultan, Tubelight, Tiger Zinda Hai, Race 3, Bharat, Dabangg 3 and now, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. The historic streak will continue with Tiger 3 on Diwali making it 17 in a row for Salman Khan. A person’s stardom is often judged by what his bad films do at the box office and for Salman Khan, the number starts from Rs. 100 crore, speaking volumes about his unparalleled stardom and reach among the masses. There's a struggle for others to reach Rs. 100 crores with good films and here is Salman, whose rejected films have also done Rs. 100 crores at the domestic box office (though we hope, he doesn't take his stardom for granted and does films with better and able directors)

All his contemporaries have had the streak of 100 crore films broken last decade, but Salman Khan is standing tall like a Tiger and ready to roar with more films in the 100-crore club. With 16 back-to-back 100 crore films already, this record will stay unchallenged for years to come by, or who knows, it may just be one of those rare records to stay unchallenged for the coming few decades. None of the contemporaries from today’s time are even close to hitting 16 back-to-back 100 crore films at this point in time, in fact, everyone except for Salman has their streak of 100 crore films broken. And given the way films are being made in today’s time as also actors taking their time to do 1 film a year, this streak will remain unchallenged for at-least 20 more years, and that too subject to someone from the younger lot showing this level of consistency.

This is god-level domination at the box office by Salman Khan as he is competing with no one but himself. There’s no one even close to Salman in the list of consecutive 100 crore films. The second best on the list of consecutive films in the Rs. 100 crore club is Akshay Kumar, with 6 films in a row – Gold, 2.0, Kesari, Mission Mangal, Housefull 4, and Good Newwz. The streak however stands broken now and he will have to start the count from 0 again. It’s a neck-to-neck battle between Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, who have a streak of delivering 5 back-to-back Rs. 100 crore films – Golmaal Again, Raid, Total Dhamaal, De De Pyaar De, and Tanhaji. However, much like Akshay, even Ajay’s streak is broken and he will have to start it from zero at this point in time to get back and challenge the consecutive 100 crore films. Shah Rukh Khan has 6 consecutive Rs. 100 crore films – Ra One, Don 2, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Chennai Express, Happy New Year and Dilwale. His streak is also broken and he is now standing at with his first Rs. 100 crore film with Pathaan, which is poised to hit 3 by the end of this year. Same for Ranveer Singh who once upon a time delivered 4 back-to-back Rs 100 crore films but now stands at zero.

Aamir Khan has a streak of 4 consecutive Rs. 100 crore films – Dhoom 3, PK, Dangal, and Thugs of Hindostan, which is now broken by Laal Singh Chaddha, followed by Hrithik Roshan, with 3 in a row for Rs. 100 crore films.
