The Unsung Heroes: Somali Republic Military Officers in the 1977 Ogaden War
In the annals of military history, few conflicts have captured the imagination and admiration of strategists as much as the 1977 Ogaden War between Somalia and Ethiopia. This conflict was not just a territorial dispute but a testament to the courage, strategic brilliance, and unwavering dedication of the Somali National Army (SNA) officers who fought for their people's cause. In this blog, we delve into the lives and achievements of these remarkable officers, whose stories deserve to be told.
A Nation United by Language, Divided by Maps
The quote by Salman Rushdie—"To be Somali is to be a people united by one language and divided by maps"—resonates deeply with the context of the Ogaden War. For the Somali people, the war was more than a political endeavor; it was a just cause aimed at uniting ethnic Somalis under one banner. However, the international community viewed it through the lens of irredentism, complicating Somalia’s diplomatic and military efforts.
Despite these challenges, the Somali military leadership demonstrated exceptional skill and resilience. The war effort was spearheaded by General Mohamed Ali Samatar, ably supported by Chief of National Army Staff General Abdullahi Fadil, Deputy Chief Colonel Ahmed Hassan Muse, and other distinguished officers. Their collective expertise and commitment were instrumental in executing one of the most sophisticated military campaigns on the African continent.
Command Structure and Key Figures
The Somali National Army was organized into two main command centers: the North Command based in Hargeisa and the Southern Command based in Baidoa/Mogadishu. Each command center oversaw various divisions and directorates crucial to the war effort.
North Command : Led by notable figures such as Colonel Yussuf Salhan, who commanded the Jigjiga Center, and Colonel Farah Handulle, who successfully captured Wardheer. These leaders, along with their deputies, orchestrated complex operations that resulted in significant victories.
Southern Command : Included prominent leaders like Colonel Abdullahi Yussuf, who led the Negheille Center, and Colonel Abdullahi Irro, responsible for the Godey Center. Their strategic acumen and leadership ensured the success of multiple fronts.
Notable Battles and Heroes
Several battles stand out in the narrative of the Ogaden War, each marked by the valor and tactical prowess of Somali officers.
Godey Campaign : Launched on July 13, this surprise attack set the stage for subsequent victories. Under the leadership of Colonel Abdullahi Irro and his deputy Major Abdulkadir Kosar, the Somali forces swiftly secured Godey, paving the way for further advances.
Qabri-Dahare Front : Commanded by Colonel Ali Hussein and his deputy Major Abdulaziz Bowbowleh, both graduates of the prestigious Frunze Military Academy. Their meticulous planning and execution led to the liberation of Qabri-Dahare within two days. Major Yassin Hurfe, another standout officer, played a pivotal role in the tank battalion support, ultimately sacrificing his life in the final hours of the battle.
Wardheer Victory : Colonel Farah Handulle and his deputy Major Mohamed Mahmood Sheikh achieved a remarkable feat by capturing Wardheer, where a large number of Ethiopian prisoners of war were taken. This victory underscored the effectiveness of the Somali national strategy.
Legacy and Aftermath
The legacy of these officers extends beyond the battlefield. Many continued to serve their nation in various capacities long after the war. For instance:
Colonel Ali Hussein became a revered figure in the Somali National Movement (SNM), contributing significantly to its reorganization in the late 1980s.
Major Abdulaziz Bowbowleh and Major Dahir Indha-Qarsho remained influential in northern fronts.
Colonel Farah Handulle , despite being tragically killed in 1987, left an indelible mark as a governor of several regions.
Several officers, including Generals Begedi, Aftooje, Aare, and Ali Ismail, served as military attachés in key countries, enhancing Somalia’s diplomatic relations.
Conclusion
The Somali Republic military officers of the 1977 Ogaden War exemplified the spirit of unity, bravery, and professionalism. Their contributions not only shaped the course of the conflict but also left a lasting impact on Somalia’s military and political landscape. As we reflect on their achievements, let us remember and honor these unsung heroes whose dedication and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.

Africa Unites: Urgent Aid for Flood Victims

Catastrophic Consequences of Unrelenting Floods
Mogadishu, Somalia. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) issues an urgent alert in response to the catastrophic flooding wreaking havoc across the Hiraan, Bakool, Bay, and Gedo regions of Somalia. Unprecedented heavy seasonal Deyr rains have led to devastating consequences, affecting over 1.77 million people, displacing 649,000 individuals, claiming lives, and destroying homes and livelihoods. Impact of El Niño-Triggered Floods Amidst Prolonged Drought Compounding the impact of prolonged drought, El Niño-triggered rainfall over the last month has resulted in devastating floods, submerging farmlands, and damaging critical infrastructure. The heavy rainfall is anticipated to affect up to 1.5 million hectares of cropland, worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Heavy Rainfall Persists
With above-normal rainfall anticipated until the end of 2023, the humanitarian crisis deepens, impacting 4.3 million people. By year-end, a quarter of the population will face crisis-level hunger or worse. Urgent humanitarian aid and funding are imperative to address immediate needs, protect livelihoods, and support host communities and displaced individuals. IRC Somalia Director Calls for Immediate Action Richard Crothers, IRC Somalia Country Director, emphasizes the urgency of immediate action and coordinated efforts. The IRC is committed to safeguarding affected populations, but a swift and substantial increase in funding is crucial to preventing further loss of lives and protecting livelihoods.
Urgent Funding Needed to Mitigate Ongoing Flood Impact
As the forecast predicts continued heavy rainfall, there is a critical need for swift and substantial funding to address the growing humanitarian needs. Dwindling funding at this crucial juncture will hinder humanitarian agencies' ability to assist, aggravating severe outcomes for the affected population. Climate Injustice Unfolding on the Frontlines in Somalia Crothers points out the climate injustice faced by those on the frontlines of the crisis, emphasizing the disproportionate impact on communities that have done the least to contribute to climate change. As COP28 approaches, there is an opportunity to address climate impacts on conflict-affected, climate-vulnerable communities and bridge financial gaps.
IRC’s On-the-Ground Efforts to Alleviate Impact
Nearly half a million affected individuals are in Southwest State, with others in Jubbaland, Puntland, and Galmudug. Baidoa, facing severe flash floods, is a critical concern. The IRC actively supports communities, reinforces riverbanks, and prepositions basic items to address immediate needs. IRC's Ongoing Operations in Somalia The IRC, operational in Somalia since 1981, is scaling up operations to provide healthcare, unconditional cash transfers, rehabilitation of water sources, and mobile health services. Despite past interruptions due to insecurity, the IRC has been operating continuously since 2007, working in Mogadishu, Puntland, southwest, and central Somalia. Exporter of Spray Dryer in Somalia
Drytech Engineering Systems is a trustable Supplier, Manufacturer, and Exporter of Spray Dryer in Somalia.
Our Manufacturer Unit is in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
Drytech Engineering Systems provides advanced spray dryer plants designed to meet the needs of demanding customer applications.
Spray drying is a highly efficient method used to transform liquid substances into dry powder by atomizing the liquid into fine droplets and rapidly drying them using hot air.
Advantages of Spray Dryer:
Flexible Capacity Range: We provide spray dryer plants in capacities ranging from small-scale to large commercial-scale operations, offering flexibility based on production needs.
Consistent Powder Quality: The spray drying process ensures consistent powder quality throughout, maintaining product uniformity from start to finish.
Multiple Feedstock Forms: The spray drying process effectively handles a wide range of feedstock forms—solutions, slurries, pastes, gels, suspensions, and melts.
Versatile Feedstock Compatibility: Our technology can handle a variety of feedstock types, including abrasive, corrosive, flammable, explosive, or toxic materials, as long as they can be pumped.
How does Spray Dryer work?
Wet Process: Before the spray drying begins, the material is in a liquid form. The preparation of the liquid is crucial to ensuring efficient spray drying and maximizing the yield.
Atomization: Atomization is the process where the liquid feed is broken into tiny droplets. This increases the surface area of the material, promoting faster drying.
Contact Between Droplets and Hot Air: The atomized droplets are introduced into a spray chamber, where they come into contact with hot air. The heated air efficiently dries the droplets, absorbing moisture and facilitating the drying process.
Drying Process: As the droplets move through the spray chamber, the drying process continues. The moisture in the droplets evaporates through heat and mass transfer with the surrounding air.
Solids Separation: Once the particles are dried, they need to be separated from the air. This is typically done using cyclones, which can be equipped with filters for enhanced efficiency.

Will Puntland fail Somalia’s debt relief process?
The political conflict between the Federal government of Somalia and the Puntland State has caused the government institutions of both sides to not work together, while Puntland is in criticism how it works government of President Hassan Sheikh.
One of the main points of contention is the implementation of the Federal system, in which Puntland wants to have more powers, while the Mogadishu government wants to take most of the powers.
At the meeting of the National Consultative Council in Mogadishu in December 2022, Puntland refused to sign the provisions agreed by other regional governments, which included, the implementation of the Federal judicial system, the delimitation of the powers of the two levels of government, the national system of security and national election proposal.
Since then, the conflict between the two sides has been intensifying, as Puntland did not attend the meeting of the National Consultative Council in Baidoa on March 16, 2023, and the cooperation between the two sides was completely stopped.
Debt relief process
The prime minister of the Federal government Haza Abdi barre has clearly stated that the Somalia debt relief plan that has been going on for the last 7 years is at risk of failure, if the Puntland Ministry of Finance does not cooperate with the Federal government’s Ministry of Finance, so that the financial institutions sent to the world with a united document that can represent the whole country of Somalia.
He said that on the 9th month of this year, Somalia is about to be forgiven for the debt it has suffered for more than 30 years, which amounts to 5 billion dollars, but that can be achieved together, if this process is lost. Somalia can fail.
Mohamed Said Faroole, Puntland Minister of Planning said on his part that he will not allow cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Finance, saying that international donations should not be openly used, and the debts owed to Somalia in the first place Puntland has not received any funding for projects.
“Puntland has no debt, neither Bossaso Port nor streets was built on debt. Hassan Sheikh’s government looted the old debt of 5 billion, we will not allow 200 billion to be taken in our name, and we will not sign it,” said the Minister of Planning of Puntland.
This situation can cause worry and hopelessness in the debt relief plan that the Mogadishu government expected to fail, in order to gain the trust of the world’s financial institutions and attract millions of dollars of investment to the country.
