*Bahula Chaturthi* In Gujarat and its neighbouring states, people, especially the farming community, celebrate the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Bhadrapada Mas in the name of cattle. The cattle are bathed and cleaned before decorating them with flowers and various holy items. On this day, people refrain from consuming milk and milk products as a mark of respect for cows. Calves will have a field day to consume the milk from the udder of their mother-cows. As a mark of respect for cows, this day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by farmers, who worship the cow as a goddess. According to the legend, the divine cow Kamadhenu took birth as another cow called Bahula and started living in the cow herd of Nanda Gopala at Braj, where Lord Krishna was also living. While the cow Bahula wanted its milk to be consumed by Lord Krishna, the latter too was passionate for drinking the milk of Bahula. Once, cow Bahula was returning home after grazing at a distance place. It had to pass through a thick forest to reach home. On its way home, a lion attacked the cow and said that it wanted to eat Bahula. The lion also said that it had not had food for several days. The cow only said that she would feed her calf at home and return to become the food of that lion. Initially, the lion was apprehensive about the honesty of the divine cow and hesitatingly permitted the cow to go. The cow reached its abode, fed milk to her calf, told her child that she was going to be eaten by a lion and hence she would not return. The calf felt it too bad and could not imagine the future without the milk and affection of its dear mother. However, there was no option for either the cow or the calf. The calf bade adieu to its dear mother with a heavy heart. Bahula, the cow, rushed to the forest, where the lion was anxiously waiting. The cow told the lion that she was ready to become its food. The lion was bewildered to see the cow promptly return to get killed. The lion was moved by the honesty of the cow and said that it would be committing a serious sin if it were to eat away a very honest and sincere cow.
