an ode to earth 🌍 unpublished boston sept 2019 To me, Earth Day is everyday but I know some people need a gentle reminder that even the smallest action can have the greatest impact. Simple things like picking up litter when you see it, or being conscious about alternatives to single use items, or lessening your food waste are all easy things one can do to get started on the path to bettering our Earth 🌎 This year, I have decided to challenge myself to buy #nonewclothes for the entirety of 2021. I am proud to say I have made it 4 months! This may seem short to some but it is a long time for me! The essence of living sustainably, especially when it comes to clothes, is to shift your perspective to see what you are in abundance of, rather than what you are lacking in. Really parse out what your needs are vs your wants and see whether those needs can be fulfilled by something that you already own. You can even make it fun by shopping through your closet! I admit it is tempting (and might I add, easy!) to purchase something with a quick swipe of your credit card but before you do, ask yourself “do I already have something like this?” and 99% of the time it is a resounding yes! And just remember that fashion and textile waste are one of the leading causes of pollution on our planet 🌏 If you do need to buy something, use your dollar to help a small business with sustainable practices. Don’t be afraid to ask them where their clothes are made, whether their employees are being paid a living wage, and whether it was all made ethically.
