Kim Soo Jin's life in Korea

Kim Soo Jin meet Kim Rok Soo when the central shelters collapsed. She had lost an eye during the chaos, but somehow managed to live.

He had a feeling he knew who she was. Someone, either really stealthy or really small, had been stealing food rations for the past few weeks leading up to the Cataclysm.

This is also part of the reason his curse didn't work on her. He was aware of her, just no connection to her prior, thus letting her live, but not without consequence. Ex: Missing eye

He takes her in during the 24 hour battle. And quickly realizes something is... Off, about this child.

She claims to be 2 years old, but is perfectly communicating with him, has zero issues moving around(save for her small size), and is just way too mature for a toddler.

Not to mention how she purrs sometimes when he pats her head, how she seems acutely aware of the monster around them, how she grows or hisses at strangers(that later become corrupt officials or join a shady guild), how her pupil become more reptilian when she's agitated, or how she has fucking fangs. Actual, razor sharp fangs.

He writes it off as her ability, becoming more protective because as far as he's aware, no 2 year old had awakened other than her.

He doesn't acknowledge how relieved he is that someone survived among his shelter. Or how he actually starts writing down data from the monsters she spots so if he does have to fight, she can at least survive.

He won't say out loud that his Record ability awakened because of her. He wasn't even aware he'd awakened until he started bleeding from his nose.

Kim Soo Jin let out the most indignant screech when he suddenly started bleeding. Not knowing what to do, she basically slapped her sleeves against his nose in a panic. Not aware of her strength and ended up bruising him.(CJS, who had witnessed this, would later laugh his ass off whenever someone brought it up)

Meanwhile, KRS feels horrible because he made a toddler cry.(KSJ argues she wasn't, KRS begs to differ). Thus tries just a little harder not to get injured. He can't make a little kid cry, now can he? But that doesn't stop his dumb ass from getting into mountains of trouble, if anything, he becomes even more stubborn because of KSJ

KSJ adapts very quickly to their new living environment once KRS gets into Team 1. She learns to do house work so KRS can relax(finally!!), He tried to protest, but KSJ made an expression very similar to a "I'm tired of this shit" LSH. He had to sit down and rethink letting her hang out with the team.

Mentioned in basic headcannons, but he does not want her fighting any time soon. He knows she'll have to fight eventually, but he's holding it off for as long as possible. He wants her to stay as a child and enjoy life as much as possible in their world.

Years later, he would learn not to hold his kids back when they want to fight and are very much capable of doing so. But that still won't stop him from giving them the childhood he never had.

Kim Rok Soo also realizes that Kim Soo Jin's abilities are variants of Team 1's. His Record turns into Archive, which only records the movements of humanoid creatures, making her able to copy their movements. Choi Jung Soo's White Miru turns into a Miru Family. 3 black dragons, all with different eye colors. Black, brown, and reddish brown. He's only seen her use it a few times, mostly because it takes a lot of her energy to use even one. Lee Soo Hyuk's Slash ability turns into Mince, she can't do one powerful slash, but multiple weaker ones.

Very few people outside of Team 1 know about her. They have no idea how she keeps gaining new abilities, or how many she can have, but they do know it's something many people would kill to get their hands on. Kim Soo Jin on the other hand, wants people to know about how strong she is so they don't mess with her family.

The only ability he doesn't know where it came from is Projection. Which allows her to project her memories like a hologram, this is done through her blind eye. This ability is used by Lee Soo Hyuk to deliver a final message to Kim Rok Soo in the event he dies.

He doesn't ever mention it was Kim Soo Jin that told him to do so, she knows her adoptive father the best. And she knows he already has a shit tone of trauma and survivor's guilt, and she doesn't want to add to that.

Speaking of trauma... She has her share too. But that comes in her 2nd life... Most of it...

ANYWAY: When KRS gains Instant KSJ is not happy. She treasures him, and will do anything for him, so she despises it when he bleeds for any reason at all. But most of all she hates it when he bleeds for other people.(Something that carries over into her 2nd life)

However... No matter how injured he's gotten, Kim Rok Soo has always come back in once piece. So, eventually, after many years, Kim Soo Jin learns that, while he gets hurt a lot despite hating pain, Rok Soo will be fine.(Not IS fine. He'll BE fine.)

She's surprisingly selfish, and wants to keep the things she treasures tucked away safely from the rest of the world. She hates when someone outside of Team 1 comes into their apartment. And the only people she lets in her room are KRS, LSH, and CJS.

When the two of them died, she hoarded everything of theirs she could get her hands on. Her room is a mess, but KRS doesn't bother cleaning it because KSJ actually owns very little things of hers. They're all things he's given her, or things from his former teammates.

After their deaths, she also started becoming more reckless. Before, she followed KRS's example of thoroughly planning things just in case. After, she started diving head first into whatever she was going and just improvise.

Which honestly isn't a lot. She mostly studies at home, under the watch of their neighbor, who KRS trusts(a nice grandma who always says the two of them remind her of her son and granddaughter). When she isn't home, she's running errands with KRS or their neighbor, training with him, she snuck out, or she's babysitting Kim Min Ah and Bae Puh Rum's daughter.

KRS spoils her. So did LSH and CJS when they were alive. KMA and BPR are the ones that try to rein KRS in.

They are... Mildly successful.

Okay, enough fluff, time for angst.

Kim Rok Soo was devastated when she died. Even more so because he couldn't record her last moments(bc Projection). The only thing that brought him some level of comfort was the fact she managed to severely injure a Grade 1 Monster and protect everyone at the orphanage.

She was the only casualty during the attack. But you best believe that monster died screaming. We haven't seen KRS!Cale lose his shit, but in this world he did.(And it was terrifying) She died when he was 30, 7 more years and she would have been an adult. (He celebrated that day in another world. He did so with the company of her future siblings.)

It took him months to work up the courage to clean her room. When he did, his Records almost immediately started playing at every object he picked up. The only item that didn't do so was a novel he found called "The Birth of A Hero" by Nelan Barrow.

There was a note card used as a bookmark on the 2nd volume. It was Choi Jung Soo's handwriting, wishing her a happy 12th birthday. (He doesn't think about how he died before her 7th)

He learns from the old lady that LSH and CJS had prepared gifts for her up until her 20th birthday. During the 6 years he spend without her, he put then in her vacant room, but he never opened them.

Sui Khan and a reincarnated Choi Jung Soo made sure to buy her gifts similar or the same.

TLDR: Kim Soo Jin stayed with KRS for a decade. Everyone(that knew her) loved her. She died protecting others, and meant so much to KRS. She also pushed KRS into reading TBoaH, and both of them would do anything for each other. Peek Father-Daughter relationship. 10/10.

I saw someone talking about Cale not being innocent with relationships, which i agree with, so wanna also add my personal opinion on this rather interesting matter+a bit on his trauma!

Cale loved reading novels and comics, so he probably read some romance or smut among the way too. As we know, he is a quite curious person, thus i doubt he wouldn't be interested in it at least for a bit.

He also recognizes relationship stuff overall! Like for example in Korean arc with Kim Min Ah and Bae Puh Rum. They weren't a couple yet, however Cale noticed vibes around them so there is also a comment about them looking good together. Even if it was more of a "Ah, they were lovely-dovely since then", it is still a realization.

As a result, if we push back the idea of Cale being aroace, he isn't innocent! Cale knows enough to understand romance, sex, flirting and all that jazz on a basic level.

Here is the thing, right?

When literally anything relared to emotions or relationships, both platonic and romantic, includes HIM in the equations, Cale suddenly becomes a fool.

An obvious, absolutely traumatized and with little to no self-awareness fool.

Cale literally degrades himself and his feelings or emotions on a daily basis, guys, i don't think this depressed man is able to comprehend that people actually just enjoy his sole presence alone.

Again, the problem here not in Cale not realizing/recognizing that kind of stuff (what basically innocence implies), but in Cale not thinking that someone can like him or be into him.

People don't give enough credit to how severe his self-hatred, that was builded for tens of years and supported by hearing others hate him, is.

It absolutely distorted Cale's view of himself.

As Kim Rok Soo? Well, he was always average looking, the scars made him look even worse.

As Cale? Well, he might look better now, but his personality still trash, he is selfish and not emotional overall.

If nothing above works? Well, his self made inner image of a "Bad person" always does!

He wouldn't ever believe that someone can love him romanticly.

Because why? Why him?

He is absolutely disoriented when people show their care for him nowadays. In the novel it plays of as the silly moments of obvious Cale, but if you think about that?

It just Cale honestly not understanding why they care for HIM.

This is not about innocence. Not at all.

It is about a man who cannot love himself and as a result doubting everyone's love for him.

TCF only has romance in side characters and also only in established (or past) relationships: Deruth and Jour (past), King Zed and Alberu's mother (past), Ron and Beacrox' mother (past), Deruth and Violan (established for 10 years).

Even Kim Min Ah and Bae Puh Rum, who are the closest we've gotten to a romance in TCF, are already an established couple by the time we first meet them.

There's no one who has gotten into a new romantic relationship during the course of the story. There's also no focus on the established relationships. Mostly if the novel talks about the relationships it's to drive the story forward or explain the characters' motivations or circumstances.

Only Kim Min Ah and Bae Puh Rum are a bit of a special case, there's *minimally* more focus on their relationship, to the point that we're geeting scenes where Bae Puh Rum awkwardly tells his uncle that he's dating or Cale comments on how they look good as a couple. However, I don't believe this is because the author decided to finally inject some romance into the story, but rather to bring some comic relief into a dark and tragic story arc.

Also, that arc is about overcoming despair and finding hope in the future and Kim Min Ah and Bae Puh Rum represent that. They are young, just teenagers who'd normally still be in school, but they are strong enough to defend against the monsters and survive despite their age. They're also not beaten down by their circumstances. Despite the tragic turn their world took they still behave like normal teenagers, joking around and dating. And a few years later, when Kim Rok Soo is team leader, they'll have become parents to a child. By then humanity has learned to deal with the monsters and cities are getting rebuilt. The world is peaceful enough again and there's enough hope that things will get even better, that the thought of setting a child into the world becomes desireable again. Birthing a child is a serious decision and most couples will, if they have the ability to, avoid doing it when they feel unsafe or think that their child will have an unsafe future. That Kim Min Ah and Bae Puh Rum decided to have a child tells a lot about how safe Earth actually became. It's the manifestation of the wish everyone who went through the apocalypse had (returning to the world before) turning into reality.

Anyway, that's my analysis of romantic relationships in TCF. To summarize: They're non-existent and I love that.

random thought #4: no romance

I appreciate that the author doesn't add a romantic subplot for her characters just because they're of the opposite sex.

Like Cage and Taylor who, if this is a tv show, would've immediately been tagged as a couple even if they're just good friends. They're the best of friends who really care deeply for each other and right from the start, I never saw their bond as a romantic one. It's special since they understand each other so well because of their burdens and similar sense of humor. Like imagine how devastated Cage must've been in TBoaH. It must've been like losing a part of herself, her other half.

Yeah, I can see the idea that they can be a couple but it's so nice to see that the author just focuses on their friendship throughout the first part of TCF instead.

Then there's that time when Cale had Rosalyn and Choi Han help out Lock.

Cale clapped once, before pointing at Choi Han and Rosalyn.

“That is why we will pretend that you are the mother and father, or, if you do not like that scenario, then you shall be the older brother and older sister. You two will need to figure out how to protect him.”

I love the fact that Cale just gives them options to choose from so they can feel comfortable with each other. Especially since he knows they literally just met a few days ago. I also think that they just give off sibling vibes. Like Rosalyn and Choi Han never gave off anything else but friendship or family vibes and it's just so nice to see it happen.

I don't hate romance, okay? I actually love them. That is, when I look for that specific genre. If I'm not looking for it and it's there, I usually feel annoyed. Sometimes, it's not tagged but it still happens in the story.

I just find it exhausting at times when novels or tv shows push for romance when there's no need or no reason for it. Especially the love at first sight trope. That one just aggravates me.

Like they can explore how close two characters are without putting a romantic context to it. In fact, the "romance" that we get in TCF are mostly from Deruth and Violan and from Deruth and Jour. It can't be said it's romance either since the focus on them is about the whole family instead. Other characters never show any sign of being in love with someone either.

And I also love the fact that Cale, the main character, doesn't have a romantic relationship throughout the whole first book. He has no time for one since he's in the middle of a war, he's focused on protecting his friends and family, and he's busy fighting some crazy bastards. He never looked at another person and thought he was in love.

If Yoo Ryeo Han ever adds romance later on, ✨I still hope she doesn't✨, it's easier to accept since I know these characters are close to each other. They've been together since the beginning. They bonded and experienced a lot of good and bad things together. Although it'll be weird to me...

“But isn’t it doable since they’re both just half and half?”

Kim Min Ah looked away from Bae Puh Rum who sounded as if he wanted to cry.

I just realised that Cale had mentioned before that the new Tem One, most members have a family. Then I remembered that Kim Min Ah and Bae Puh Rum has a kid. So if they have one, who's the say the others don't.

Thus, the headcannon that they sometimes ask Cale to go to their houses sometimes, well maybe drag him out of work and he meets kids on their homes and even though he was awkward at first he got used to it and the kids calls him by his name because of how grumpy he is.

Cale(s) is the most innocent in their group, even Kim Rok Soo who are 40.

TBOH Cale and Kim Rok Soo's innocence is destroyed by Bud, who they know later after their Family dead. It's not much but Bud is the one teach them seduced act and all.

TBOH Cale and Kim Rok Soo once think Ron was a weak old man and they felt lucky that Ron left with Choi Han after Henituse war. He scared that Ron will die too.

There was time Bae Puh Rum forget condom in Team 1's room on Kim Min Ah's desk when he went to meet his wife, Kim Rok Soo took it and give it to Kim Min Ah, she realise that Kim Rok Soo didn't know what condom is by how blunt he give it to her and hit her husband when she come home.

He asked Choi Jung Soo if he should know that think how scare Kim Min Ah is.
