BTW syringomyelia and the chiari malformation are not things you can detect from the outside and all dogs with rounded backskulls are at risk, including non-brachy and non-toy breeds. It is the back of the skull that is the location of the problem, and it is the internal shape of the skull that pinches the back of the brain and causes the pocket of spinal fluid on the spinal cord that cannot drain on its own to form.
If your problem is the front of the skull being rounded, then you are talking about hydrocephalus, a different and significantly more devastating buildup of fluid against and within the brain itself that frequently ultimately kills the dog. In these cases, all dogs with rounded/domed foreheads are at risk, including once again non-brachy and non-toy breeds.

This dog is neither brachy nor a toy breed and had both hydro (towards the front of his skull) and sm (at the base of his skull). You can see his clearly rounded skull shape- the domed forehead put him at higher risk, and the rounded backskull did as well. Despite the fact that he is probably the furthest thing from a brachy toy breed, and isn’t even a purebred dog, he still needed brain surgery in order to survive. Thankfully it seems his surgery was successful and he improved rapidly once he healed.
You can no more detect SM by looking at a dog’s head than you can detect HD by looking at a dog’s back legs while standing. If it was that easy, we wouldn’t need MRIs and xrays.

Out of all the borzoi you've ever met or seen, which has the longest snoot?
I haven’t actually measured every snoot haha and sometimes the head shape can be deceptive. A wide backskull and more cheek fill can make a head look not as long, even though the length from eye to nose might be longer than a narrower head. Also photo angles can make them look looooooong
Bandit has a pretty long snoot!

bazzy is now 8 months and i just wanted to make a record of my thoughts at this age, bc he’s getting pretty gawky and awkward right now and i want to keep track of my likes and dislikes along the way to see what improves and what doesn't:
-he is a bit easty-westy, which i’m told is fairly normal/acceptable in fast animals, but it’s not my cup of tea. he’s been this way for a long time now
-rear is a little weak right now, but should straighten out with muscle and age
-he is looking slab-sided, especially in photos, which also makes it hard to monitor his weight
-his front is narrower than sivi’s, but he is not as straight in the shoulder as sivi
-i can’t tell if his backskull is unusually round or it’s just his ear set (which you all know i dislike; his ears are huge and thick and floppy and they look like they’re just gonna slide right down to his neck)
-i’d like to see more forechest, but that could definitely come with age
-he got sivi’s big round void-eyes, which color-wise are absolutely perfect, but shape-wise are more round than almond-shaped
-his pigment isn’t that inky black that i love; his lips are pinkish in some places
-i have always liked his topline; right now, it has flattened a little bit, or at least it appears to sometimes and i hope it comes back
-teeth look excellent
-i was concerned about his underjaw for a hot sec, but i think it looks better now
-like his pasterns and feet
-like his front and rear angles
-wish he had a little more arch to his neck, but overall fine; neck flows smoothly into the back, but he does tend to hold his head a bit upright at times
-better bone/substance than sivi for sure
-i like the width and length of his muzzle. sivi’s is more snipey
-much more moderate croup than sivi; it’s not a fuckin cliff
-loin builds muscle easily, much better than sivi
-not thrilled with his underline; a bit of a herring gut on him, which makes him look heavier than he is
-his COAT. UGH!!!!! grow some hair, please!!!
-loving his size. about 22″-22.5″ and 32lbs
-lovely long tail
temperament:
-absolute angel baby
-reserved with strangers, but not shy
-loves LOVES LOVES other dogs
-unsure about children
-hates nosework, but only at our class’s location. loves it at home; sometimes is more unsure than i’d like
-works well once he’s adjusted to the environment, but does take a while to adjust to all the sights (i think this will improve with age)
-not easily spooked/startled by noises or objects in the environment, though he does hate printed images of dogs
-wonderful lure/toy/food drive
-easy to motivate, but not necessarily easy to teach; this, however, is mostly on me
-gets tired to things (like treats, toys, or games) quickly. needs variety
-medium energy level, easy to manage
-affectionate with everyone in the house, unlike sivi, who only loves one person
-on the submissive side, which i wanted; gives in to sivi’s demands and avoids conflict. responds appropriately to corrections, is appropriate in his correction of other dogs (when that actually happens); does not overreact (which sivi does at times)
i am eager to see what he’s like at 18+ months, as that is when some of sivi’s asshole behaviors surfaced or intensified. so far, bazzy’s greatest crime is his unwillingness to disengage from a dog who doesn’t want to play with him. he’s really fantastic, and i hope it stays that way.
reflections on bazalai at 6 months of age…

Preview: Undying Wish - Act II
Chapter 5: Once Again
The feeling of free-falling was almost blissful.
Of course, the first second is nothing less than terrifying. The uncertainty of what’s waiting at the bottom – whether the bed of flowers is still there or not – is a contributing factor for this. However, after that, the body is taken by a happy sensation of lightness, almost like it’s flying. It feels, for a brief moment, that absolutely everything is possible.
And then, they hit the ground.
When Frisk opened his eyes, he wasn’t sure if he had passed out, or how much time had passed since the moment he hit the ground. Still, he was alive, and that was a great thing.
He was laid on a soft surface – the bed of golden flowers, he was certain of it. He slowly sat, looking at his surroundings. He was in a small chamber of sorts, which was bathed by a faint blue light that came from above.
He then noticed he had landed exactly at the center of the bed of flowers – the only part where the flowers were still growing strong. The flowers around it had all withered – its golden color reduced to a putrid brown, smelling nauseatingly sweet. The human slowly stood up, thinking on how grim the situation was. Golden flowers could withstand all sorts of shortcomings, which meant that if they had withered, they had been left alone for quite some time.
He walked around for a bit, trying to recognize anything that could be useful, when a little light began flickering near him. He took a while to realize it was the flashlight he was holding when he jumped – and he was glad it had survived the fall. He’d need it. He picked it up and shook it a few times until the beam estabilized.
Then, he began to hear a sound coming from above. Weak at first, but it quickly grew in intesity, until Frisk got what it was – screaming. And very high-pitched at that.
With a loud thud, MK fell with their face flat on the center of the bed of flowers. Frisk jumped on the spot when that happened, and felt sick.
Their body was limp and they were not moving.
The human felt all the air leave his lungs. The monster had fallen in a really bad position – what if they had they broken their neck? With an increasing panicking sensation, he approached them. The temperature of the cave felt like it went down several degrees.
Suddenly, MK moved, kicking his legs on the ground and sitting up, strangely agitated.
“I’m okay!”, he yelled. “I’m okay!”, he repeated once more, looking at Frisk.
The monster seemed to be having a hard time believing he was alright – and Frisk breathed relieved. He put his hand on his own chest, feeling the heartbeats getting to its normal frequency as he calmed down.
He helped MK stand up on their own feet, and they walked away from the bed of flowers.
“Where are we?”, asked MK, his voice echoing on the cave.
Frisk shone the light above them, looking at the hole. Just as from above they couldn’t see the ground, they also couldn’t see the ceiling from there – the flashlight’s beam didn’t reach that long. It made him wonder how long the fall actually was.
“The entrance of the Ruins.”, explained Frisk, directing the beam to the corridor in front of him. “There’s an exit up ahe-”
“NYAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!”
Both Frisk and MK jumped on their spots as that screaming sound quickly filled the place – before the owner of that loud, piercing voice, fell to the bed of flowers with a loud thud, too.
“OWWW...”, they groaned, standing on their fours. Frisk went there to help the skeleton stand up.
“Are you alright?”, he asked, trying to see if Papyrus was wounded somewhere.
“I’M... FINE...”, they replied, shaking their head to clear their thoughts. “JUST... WOW... HOW ARE WE EVEN ALIVE?”
Frisk looked up once more. As soon as Papyrus’ voice stopped echoing, the human could hear that weird, breathing noise the hole above their heads made.
MK walked towards them, looking to the ground with an intrigued expression. Frisk immediately knew they noticed the withered golden flowers around the bed’s center.
“Why are the flowers only alive at the center?”, they asked, more to themselves than to the others.
Papyrus scratched his backhead (or ‘backskull’?), looking around in an attempt to make sense of what the reptilian monster had said.
“PERHAPS SOMEONE CAST A MAGIC SPELL HERE AT THE CENTER?”
“But then why only at the center?”, pointed MK, kicking a withered flower, which turned to dust at his touch. “Why not on all flowers here?”
There was an awkward silence – it was clear Papyrus couldn’t think of an explanation for that.
“UGH, YOU ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS!”, he objected, exasperated.
Frisk put his hand on his forehead – he could feel it throbbing. He got the odd feeling he once knew the reason the flowers on the center had not withered – and it was much more sinister than the hyphotesis Papyrus had raised. However, the answer had been lost in a previous timeline, leaving Frisk with little more than the sensation he once knew the answer, rather than having the actual explanation itself.
“Great.”, mumbled MK. “We’re not even five minutes in the Underground and nothing is making any sense.”
Frisk looked up, pulled away from his thoughts, and focused the flashlight’s beam back at the corridor in front of them.
“Let’s keep pressing forward, then.”, he said, beginning to walk. He felt the two monsters exchanging looks before following him.
It wasn’t particularly difficult to walk on the cave system of the Ruins – if anything, it felt really similar to what Frisk remembered from six years prior. However, this time everything was dark – which made the flashlight an absolutely necessary tool. It also felt colder now – the human was shivering under his coat. When he was ten, he was wearing nothing but that old striped t-shirt and some shorts – and he remembered being fine with that in that first part of the Underground.
They reached another chamber, and something got caught by Frisk’s flashlight that made him stop in his tracks, his blood running cold.
In the distance, he could see two sets of stairs – both of them leading to a large gateway that served as the official Ruins’ entrance. If memory served the human right, they used to be really well kept, but in the moment they were mostly crumbled, barely usable for them to access the gateway. However, it wasn’t that what made him stop – it was the patch of soil in front of it, the one that had several withered golden flowers forming a perfect circle, as if surrounding something that would normally be found in the middle.
Despite that, the center was empty.
“Howdy!”, a voice echoed in Frisk’s head.
The human waited for a few moments, almost expecting it to show up. He knew that was impossible – after all, he had killed it all those years ago – but there was something in that patch of soil in front of him that still made him nervous.
“Uh... you okay, dude?”, asked MK.
Frisk quickly averted his eyes from the patch of soil, choosing to focus the flashlight’s beam on the stairs ahead. He wondered if the reptilian monster noticed what he had been staring.
“I-it’s nothing.”, said Frisk, failing to avoid his voice to stutter. “Let’s go.”
The trio began to walk once again – Frisk making sure they would keep their distance from that patch of soil. As they walked upstairs, a terrifying thought crossed the human’s head: if he managed to reset, it would be back, too. He’d have to face it again – and he was sure it wouldn’t be happy for having being dead for six whole years.
Or would it?

I did concede the point that the dog existed, but do still consider it an anomoly simply for a few different things:
The first skull you posted on this one I would consider a better match than the PDE skull, and yes your point on unrelated dogs not lining up 100% is fair as I've been thinking the biggest problem with my reference is that the example dog has more underjaw and more backskull than the skull I used and that the eye placement is a bit off. I attributed that to the extreme face, however, and the fact that the likelihood that the two dogs are closely related is fairly minimal. Even a single generation can result in some pretty major changes- it's why I wish more people would donate their dogs to science after they pass so we could study this more closely.
I am still going about that jaw, however- in the PDE skull compared to the example dog, the hinge of the jaw is radically differently placed, and it creates this feeling of offness that the more correct skulls do not imply. Perhaps that's just the severity of the underbite and related atrophy of the muscles that control it, but I have found when that feeling is so strong it's generally attributed to multiple things and that skull is so warped that I think it's more likely to say that that particular dog is an anomoly.
That's my opinion and you don't have to agree, but I would also point out that the vast majority of bull terrier skulls in assorted collections look like the ones I posted, rather than the PDE/80s skull. Again, I'd like to see what that dog actually looked like, where it's from, how long it lived, how old the skull itself is, what the lineage was. It's so far off of standard that it feels unfair to use it against actual living dogs when their heads line up much more with the more commonly found skulls.
Additionally I would argue that the presense of missing or crowded teeth does not definitively point to the skull shape causing problems with dentition: dobermans are doliocephalic and have a fairly wolfy skull shape with a bit more stop (depending on the lines, a lot more stop) and dentition is such a problem that every standard around the world felt the need to add a bit where the judge must COUNT the teeth with the dog's open mouth. Missing and extra premolars are the most common problem but there can be additional problems with the inscisors and the molars as well. Most other breeds, including breeds that commonly have far worse dentition or have head shapes that do directly correlate with problems there, do not have judges ensuring the bite by literally counting teeth. Hairless breeds commonly struggle with dentition as well- not due to their skull shape but due to the gene which causes hairlessness in the first place. Dentition is one of those multi-faceted problems and I have a hard time blaming bull terrier dentition (which iirc is not a common problem in the breed) on skull shape alone.
Lastly I would say that my point is not that people do not breed for extremes or that extreme dogs are not bad- again, I am a working dog guy and I do not like the very extreme structure and temperament I see in many breeding programs regardless of breed. I'm sure you could find someone celebrating their bull terrier that perfectly matched that PDE/80s skull, but I don't feel that would invalidate my point that that's not what bull terriers look like nor is it how they're supposed to look as described by the show standard. The average bull terrier skull clearly does not match.
Wait people complain about bull terrier heads..? I've never heard of it causing issues for the dog, do people just not like it because they look funny??? I'm not a fan of bull terriers (their ginormous heads with tiny little beady eyes kind of creep me out) but if it's not causing harm I just... Why would people be upset
Tumblr media
This is why.
The oft-regurgitated Pedigree Dogs Exposed point on the bull terrier skull, where she photoshopped the image to match her point. How do I know it’s photoshopped?

Because this is what actual Bull Terrier skulls look like. But I have more than once been accused of lying when I point out that the skulls do not look like the PDE image, and that that would be significant warping of the jaw and face itself, and the dogs would not look as they currently do if that was actually how their faces worked.
But, of course, PDE relied a lot of shock value, and hiding lies within truth and extreme language, and these skulls don’t look so shocking, so they weren’t used. But you’ll still see that image pop up whenever discussions on how breeds were just better 100 years ago happen, and it always bothers me.
Especially, as said, when seeing some of my other stopless terrier clients and realizing how adding that bony ridge along the top of the face is really all that’s necessary to recreate the classic egghead look. I even see this head shape in working line dobes.
