Delicate
Yandere! Merman x Reader
This story contains smut, gore, and violent themes
Prologue
-
Your delicate fingers gingerly traced across your knee, your mind lulling you in and out of slumber. The book you had no intention of reading sit idly on your left hand. Brown, torn pages waited to be read, the inked words causing your vision to blur and mind to boggle. The car's radio sang a soft tune. It was definitely Lionel Richie, you thought, unsure what particular song of his was playing.
You lightly swayed your legs back and forth as you gazed out of the car's window, peering over your sleeping friend's chest to get a better view. The withered, vacated roads allowed for leaves to wane down from healthy branches. The red color of the car reflected against the road's pavement, causing a brilliant light to mirror against the glass. The car staggered against the jagged road, oscillating back and forth in regular motions.
"Are we there yet?" Your friend Catalina's voice hummed.
Currently you were sandwiched between her and her boyfriend, Billy, who would you believe is named after Billy Joel? You tend to greet him with a song lyric or two rather than a normal hello. He finds it annoying, not that you particularly cared.
"GPS says five minutes," Richard, the navigator and self proclaimed Music Connoisseur, said.
"Oh c'mon Richie, give someone else a turn on the radio then." Catalina's hand gripped his shoulder, swinging him front and back over the seat's headrest.
Richie snickered, swatting at Catalina's hands. "Last time I let you do that, we were stuck listening to the Lion King soundtrack for two hours."
"You liar! There aren't even two hours worth of songs in that movie!"
"Thank god for that," you joked, straightening your back and looking between your two bickering friends.
A laugh sounded from the driver's seat. "Looks like sleeping beauty is finally awake." Dean cast a glance over his shoulder, eyeing you for just a moment before returning his attention to the road. Catalina nudged you with a sly smile as you rolled your eyes.
You weren't so simpleminded that you would let Dean's affections go unnoticed, but you also couldn't return them as intensely, if at all. Blonde hair and green eyes, freckles on his cheeks and forehead and thin lips that curled up into a smile; he was beautiful in all sense of the word. Yet you never did have an affinity with the beautiful.
Rather, you were a total monster fucker at heart.
Grotesque and romantic; all the books you read had these themes in common and unfortunately for you, that means nonfictional men would find it impossibly complicated to garner your attention. Poor Dean included.
"What's that book you got?" He questioned, discreetly lowering the radio's volume without alerting Richie.
You flipped the cover over. "Mermaids: A Guide To Communication." You read aloud.
"You're really dedicated to this trip, huh," Richie snickered.
Catalina flicked the side of his head. "If it's important to Billy then it's important to all of us," she scolded.
"Huh, someone call me?" Billy groggily muttered, rubbing his eyes and yawning.
You giggled at your friends' banter.
The car halted just before a backshore, a sandy beach only a few feet away.
"Finally! We made it!" Billy stretched his arms outward, almost knocking Dean over as he helped you exit the compacted vehicle.
"We seriously couldn't've chosen a closer beach?" Sighed Dean.
Billy shook his head, extending his arms out to Catalina. She strutted towards him and enfolded her arms around his neck, speaking with a half suppressed laugh. "No," she answered for him, "BBC said the mermaid sighting was here."
Billy had been planning this trip to Silnich beach for months. His professor had given his class a research project not about mermaids, unlike what you would have expected, and Billy decided that somehow he was going to correlate environmental sciences and sustainability to merfolk.
"Because mermaids totally exist," Richie grabbed his backpack from the trunk, camera equipment situated inside.
Conversely, none of you had the time to actually leap onto a last minute roadtrip and take a vacation from your accustomed, tedious work and school schedules. Dean, as the oldest, was consistently trapped inside a miniature office, scribbling down on the same ornate, tawny documents daily. You were given the opportunity to go to the school you had been dreaming of since your childhood, and Catalina and Richie were no different. But you were also exhausted by the mundane college life. So when the brunette boy sent a news article and a promise to pay for gas and food, how could you possibly say no?
You cherished these infrequent vacations eminently. Granted, a majority of these trips were to significantly more local areas with less time consuming activities; such as picnics at a fetching garden, outings to the art museum, or even just a short waltz to the convenience store down the street from your dorms. Five adults working jobs and schooling that could only benefit those waged above them; truly a melancholic way of living their already impermanent lives. Howbeit, you decided to push aside the midlife crisis that was itching your brain at 20 years old, and instead made an attempt to focus on the romantic jaunt you were offered. The salty scent in the air and the view alone made the stress of city life wash away.
The azure seas seemed to cast a foggy glow. Clams and small fish washed inward and outward as the waves greeted the pale beach nimbly. Hues of pink and orange and purple danced around the sky, hugging the ascending moon and allowing the sun to take its nightly rest. The article Billy mentioned had stated that the mermaid was seen passing sundown, the lighting in the already blurred photo allowing for only two glowing eyes and a view of inky hair.
Not to mention Silnich is a private area and stepping foot here is decidedly illegal.
Silnich was just another small town. It was quiet, boring, and old. Heavy forests surround the outskirts, keeping everyone enclosed of the outside world. Hunting is common among the forests. But, there is a section of trees a few acres wide that leads to the beach, all untouchable unless you're law enforcement or granted special permissions. Which Billy of course did not seek out.
"So, what's the plan?" Dean inquired, leading the way to the shore with a flashlight.
The five of you stopped just before the waterline and placed your bags on the sand. You weren't sure if Billy was going to make you swim, so you wore a bikini underneath a sweater just in case.
"The plan is..." Richie rummaged through his bag and pulled out a deck of cards.
"Uno?" You raised a brow.
"And drinks," added Billy as he held out two bottles of what you could faintly read as Bacardi. (No alcohol while underaged ladies and gentlemen)
Catalina snatched one out of Billy's hands and took a swig before plopping herself right on the warm sand.
"What happened to catching mermaids? For your project? Ya know, the whole reason we drove out here?" Dean had always been the more levelheaded one of the group. You liked to think you came in at a close second, though.
Billy pointed a slender finger at Richie, then at the camera, and lastly at the ocean. With a roll of his eyes and an almost inaudible no problem resounding from his throat, Richie snapped a photo of the ocean. "Now with a little bit of editing, we'll have our mermaid."
"Cheater." You mocked, taking a seat next to Catalina and beginning to set the cards up. "There's no shot you pass this class."
"All I gotta do is talk about pollution and edit a sexy mermaid onto the slideshow." Billy shrugged and sat down across from you.
Dean laughed, "(Y/N)'s right, you're failing this semester."
A silence took over as you finished passing the cards out. The night went tiredly and exasperatingly slow. You had honestly hoped you'd be able to get a little swimming in, but 3/5 of you were drunk and could barely finish the Uno game. You had only taken a few sips, not being very particular to drinking. The only other person who hadn't overdone himself was unfortunately Dean. You counted the amount of times he made futile attempts at talking, or rather flirting, with you. Fourteen if you did your math right.
"I wish we could do this more often," Billy babbled, resting his head on his girlfriend's lap. "Begging you guys to hangout all the time sucks!"
"Babe, we do hangout all the time," Catalina grunted, poking his cheek.
"I mean all of us," he pretended to sniffle, wiping a few fake tears.
Richie handed you the bottle and you took a gulp.
"At least we're here now." You comforted, lying back into the sand and letting the granules coat your hair and sweater. You had been eyeing the water for sometime now and frankly, the need to dive into it was getting fierce.
You grabbed your phone and quickly searched through your Spotify, clicking on an 80's playlist you had saved from your previous group car rides. "Someone dance with me," you giggled, dusting yourself off and blasting the phone's volume.
In the near distance, bare foot and soaked, you skipped into the water and began swaying, perhaps a little tipsy. Your (h/l) (h/c) hair bounced carelessly as the drops of salty water trickled down your arms and legs, catching chunks of wet sand as you twirled modishly. Dean came in after you, grabbing your hand and following your rhythm. And soon joined Richie, and Billy and Catalina.
Maybe three songs had passed before your energy slowly waned. "Guys, is there a bathroom around here?" Catalina questioned, walking out of the water.
"The ocean?" Dean half-joked.
"I'm serious." She stated, crossing her arms over her chest.
You pointed towards a few boulders in the distance, intricate moss patterns decorating the rocks before disappearing into the water. "You could go behind those. I'll go with you to be safe." As you began trekking out of the water, Catalina's hand stopped you.
"No thanks, I'd rather go alone." She was smiling, but for some reason you felt an uneasiness bubble in your chest.
"You sure? It might be safer if we go together." You didn't want to be pushy, but it was pitch black and none of you were familiar with the area.
"It's fine! I'll be super-duper quick." She was so drunk.
You pondered for a moment. "If you're not back in five minutes I'll look for you." It was meant to be less of a threat and more of a comfort to her.
"Okay mom," she laughed and scurried along the sand. "Don't worry about me."
You were definitely worried.

Geomorphology is the study of the form of the earth. Coastal geomorphologists study the way that the coastal zone, one of the most dynamic and changeable parts of the earth, evolves, including its profile, plan-form, and the architecture of foreshore, backshore, and nearshore rock and sediment bodies. To understand these it is necessary to examine wave processes and current action, but it may also involve drainage basins that feed to the coast, and the shallow continental shelves which modify oceanographic processes before they impinge upon the shore. Morphodynamics, study of the mutual co-adjustment of form and process, leads to development of conceptual, physical, mathematical, and simulation models, which may help explain the changes that are experienced on the coast.

Followup to the skull reconstruction I posted a few days ago, this is the known material of Brachiosuchus. Looking back there's definitely some things I'd change and update, but it still gives a good basic look at it. Brachiosuchus was part of a clade of rather bizarre crocodile cousins, the dyrosaurs (which are more closely related to Sarcosuchus than to modern crocs). They are strange to say the least, highly flexible with weird backs and pretty buff tails. Brachiosuchus additionally stands out due to the enormous arms, which are unique to this species. In literally any other Pseudosuchian, the forelimbs are shorter than the hindlimbs, but from what we know of Brachiosuchus the opposite is true. The closest comparison would be to turtles and plesiosaurs, with the big difference being that those evolved flippers, which Brachiosuchus clearly lacked. Still, it is likely that they were used *somehow* in locomotion, especially since dyrosaurs were known to be marine (mostly) and the fact that Brachiosuchus was found in a nearshore to backshore environment with tidal flats and lagoons. Finally there's size. Mine turned out at a bit over 6 meters, the paper suggests up to 6.8-7.8 meters (tho i doubt the maximum here). Difference could easily be due to the difference between purely mathematical estimate (and the specific method used) vs the fact that I based my proportions on the much more complete, if more derived Congosaurus. There's also the matter that only a small portion of the bones were given actual measurements/accurate scale bars, primarily the limb bones and the skull, while the rest I basically had to eyeball more or less. So don't be surprised if I eventually publish an update or straight up remake.

The Double Face of Posidonia Oceanica Coin and the Beached Remains in the Circeo Man and Biosphere Reserve and in the Aegadian Islands MPA: From Uncomfortable Waste to Valuable Resource
Perspective
Posidonia oceanica is the most representative seagrass of the Mediterranean Sea and according to the IUCN methods is classified among the least concerned species [1]. Even if is not mentioned amongst the properly defined “charismatic species”, considering its dual role as seascape modelling species and functional ecosystem engineer its preservation is essential. Sandy beaches, together with the foredune and the dune, form a morphological, functional and ecological complex (Figure 1). This complex provides ecosystem services which have by far the highest value in the coastal areas [2,3] even though the general perception of these poorly attractive habitats to a not expert eye is similar to that of “ecological deserts”. However, beside their ecological relevance, there are several threats undermining this delicate balance. The trend of the transversal profile of a beach is due to the processes acting perpendicularly to the shoreline and can generally be divided into three different units: the emerged beach or backshore (Figure 1), the intertidal beach or foreshore (Figure 2) and the submerged beach shoreface (Figure 3) (Lucarini et al. 2007) [1]. The coastal erosion issue is among the most concerning phenomena undermining the natural equilibria and the proper management of beached Posidonia remains is closely related to this urgent need, worth to be considered from policy makers as confirmed also by the main international and national policy guidelines [4]. Due to the lack of a unique management strategy of beached Posidonia banquettes at a local scale level the authorities adopted several temporary management strategies and emergency solutions trying to cope with this issue. To date the banquette-related residues are considered as special wastes from the national jurisdiction with all the implications related to its disposal.

Diary
May 23rd 2022
I am a very hard-headed person. I walked for like four minutes in order to get a swim in the sea. Unfortunately, in front of the picked resort, there is a depth that cannot be swum. It was enjoyable to walk that distance. I saw a photographer taking a photo of a couple, people who I felt I was being called on to, and I think a mother and son, or maybe just a company or sister, are having a big smile while the wave is approaching. I joined them then sand came into my six-pocket shorts, such a boomer.
After I came back, I grabbed a bag of Doritos and again walked towards the sea. I saw my aunt, who came from the states, taking photos with my cousin, who was leaving. The feeling of how bouncy the sand is made me write this.
I am at the backshore and my brother and parents are having the greatest time. Then I sat in the hammock looking at how amazing everything is. The sun is setting and a bottle of Pale Pilsen, a bag, a phone, and a wallet are placed on the table in front of me that is made out of bamboo. This is how I enjoy my day. This is how I want everything to be remembered.

One of the most important plants found in the sand dunes and in backshore communities adjacent to freshwater lakes is a plant called Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, or Bear Berry.
In the backshore and rare dune prairie communities of Lake Michigan, the habitat’s stability is directly influenced by weather’s dominance. Specific issues develop from: moisture leaching through the dune mountains faster than it can be hydroporically used, frequent unbroken winter winds cause the fine post-glacial sand loess to be ripped from the periphery of the dunes, sand blasting occurrences inhibit any life attempting to make use of space, and frequent erosion without accumulation. How can assemblages form a community that thrives in an environment like this long enough for any long term establishment to occur?
The answer is directly caused by bear berry colonizing the location.
This plant is an evergreen, prostrate running member of the Heath Family, It’s foliage is waxy and tough and it’s root system is very fiborously netted/branched. Unlike the majority of Ericaceae, bear berry is non-temperamental to alkaline soil preference, it actually prefers alkaline soil types. By sprawling and self spacing itself with small characterized root shyness, it is a perfect plant for shielding new community recruits from sandblasting, erosion, and soil/foliage moisture loss issues.
Bear berry is not just found in this lake; Any locality experiencing a post glacial lake zone(rebounded or semiperm) with course well drained media should have bearberry or an ecotype of it. It is a circumboreal species afterall.
If you are curious about other natural history, it is a very important starvation food source for frugavore and herbaceous fauna when other palatible options are not available; it also was once critical for lake dwelling native tribes in these Boreal zones for waterproofing and food. They are not considered the most palatable food and are noted to not be the best for human consumption raw.
The fruit can either be a steep purple or a vibrant cherry red, with flowers forming a gorgeous white or pink individuals vase shaped corolla’s on a terminal cluster blooming late May to June.

Influence of Porosity in Quantitative Analysis of Heavy Mineral Placer Deposits- Juniper Publishers
Abstract
The Heavy mineral analysis of the beach sediment is one of the finest ways to interpret the presence of the placer deposits in the coast. The point counting method is a widely used technique, which is employed for the quantitative analysis of heavy minerals. Nevertheless, this method is not applicable in case of large scale volumetric or spatial investigations as the surficial sediments occupy an inaccurate space due to its irregular grain size. Therefore, porosity is an important feature that has to be considered for the analyzing the quantitative distribution of the placer minerals present in the surface sediments. This paper highlights the effect of porosity in the heavy mineral distribution with respect to the grain size. The outcome from this research helps to enhance the results in quantitative analysis of heavy minerals.
Keywords: Heavy minerals, porosity, beach, sediments, grain size
Heavy mineral analysis
Quantitative investigation of mineral assemblages was relative mineral frequencies. This method provides information initiated by the work of Fleet and Smithson [1], who introduced of the relative percentage of each mineral present in the sample the method of grain counting to develop the estimation of [2]. In this particular research, field site is chosen along the Kottucherrymedu beach (Latitude: 10.964N and Longitude: 79.854E), central Tamil Nadu coast, India. The heavy mineral assemblage of the study region is controlled by the distribution of different type of minerals. Although the assemblage consists of various minerals, few selective placer minerals like magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, zircon and rutile [2-6] are the dominant minerals that are considered for this purpose. Totally 100 samples were collected at tide, berm and backshore region. The photographic view of different location, from which the sample is obtained, is shown in Figure 1. These samples were treated and categorized as medium (+40 to +60 ASTM), fine (+60 to +120 ASTM) and very fine (+120 to +230 ASTM) fractions. A high-density liquid i.e., Bromoform (specific gravity is 2.89 and molecular weight 252.73g/mol) is utilized for separation of heavy and light fractions. Further, the fraction of heavies is identified with the help of the microscope image counting method.
Porosity Estimation Using Petrographic Image Analysis (PIA)
Petrographic image analysis (PIA) is frequently used by geoscientists in a wide variety of petrographic applications including textural, mineralogical, fabric and porosity analysis [7-9]. A study of 150 thin sections of placer fractions with three different sizes (medium, fine and very fine) were prepared for the present investigation. Segmentation method is widely used to segregate the pores to improve the separation between pores and solid grains. This method can provide the total porosity; also it provides a highly accurate result in all the rocks except those that have an extremely isotropic/anisotropic pore structure. However, the advantage of this process is that, the pore types and the micro-textural properties of the grains can be determined during the process. A circular face with uniform magnification (400|im) was fixed in the imaging microscopy. The percentage of void space is evaluated from the microscopic images using pixel counting method.
Influence of Porosity in Heavy Mineral Quantity
The microscopic analysis shows respective fractions and its pore space for estimating total pore space present in the samples. Microscopic analysis of mineral distribution and its porosity value is presented in Table 1. Microscopic observation exposed that the porosity of garnet is much higher than that of other minerals. Garnet fractions is composed of angular/sub- angular structure hence, the particle reveals high porosity with less compaction nature. Rhombohedral crystalline structure of ilmenite has sub-angular and angular structure, obtains the porosity value with respect to crystalline structure and size of the particle distribution. The mixed fractions of the deposits are seen as Ilmenite-hematite, Ilmenite-leucoxene and magnetite- hematite minerals etc. It exhibits magnetic property when these fractions are mixed with other mineral fractions based on excessive electron/proton present in the crystalline structure. Zircon fractions show rounded and angular grains with medium pore space. The percentage of these mineral distribution is also compared with the results of normal counting method (Table 2). The results obtained based on the porosity value, revealed lesser percentage when compared to the normal counting method. The medium sized garnet showed a higher porosity value while ilmenite showed a lower porosity value. It is observed that, the porosity value decreases when the sediment size decreases. On the whole, the outcome revealed the porosity value of the more- angular grains is larger than those that are sub-spherical.

Regional habitat differences identified for threatened piping plovers on Atlantic coast
Piping plovers, charismatic shorebirds that nest and feed on many Atlantic Coast beaches, rely on different kinds of coastal habitats in different regions along the Atlantic Coast, according to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The Atlantic Coast and Northern Great Plains populations of the piping plover were listed as federally threatened in 1985. The Atlantic coast population is managed in three regional recovery units, or regions: New England, which includes Massachusetts and Rhode Island; Mid-Atlantic, which includes New York and New Jersey; and Southern, which includes Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.
While the Atlantic populations are growing, piping plovers have not recovered as well in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions as they have in the New England region. The habitat differences uncovered by the study may be a factor in the unequal recovery.
“Knowing piping plovers are choosing different habitat for nesting up and down the Atlantic Coast is key information that resource managers can use to refine recovery plans and protect areas most needed for further recovery of the species,” said Sara Zeigler, a USGS research geographer and the lead author of the study. “It will also help researchers predict how climate change impacts, such as increased storm frequency, erosion and sea-level rise, could affect habitat for this high-profile shorebird.”
The researchers found that piping plovers breeding in the New England region were most likely to nest on the portion of the beach between the high-water line and the base of the dunes. By contrast, plovers in the Southern region nested farther inland in areas where storm waves have washed over and flattened the dunes — a process known as ‘overwash.’ In the Mid-Atlantic region plovers used both habitats but tended to select overwash areas more frequently.
In general, overwash areas tend to be less common than backshore — shoreline to dunes — habitats. Nesting pairs that rely on overwash features, such as those in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions, have more limited habitat compared to birds in New England that have adapted to nesting in backshore environments.
The authors suggest that the differences in nesting habitat selection may be related to the availability of quality food. Piping plover chicks, which cannot fly, must be able to access feeding areas on foot. In New England, piping plovers can find plenty of food along the ocean shoreline, so they may have more options for successful nesting. However, ocean shorelines along the Southern and Mid-Atlantic regions may not provide enough food, forcing adults and chicks to move towards bay shorelines on the interiors of barrier islands to feed. This would explain why so many nests in these regions occurred in overwash areas, which are scarcer than backshore areas but tend to provide a clear path to the bay shoreline.
In all three regions, plovers most often chose to nest in areas with sand mixed with shells and with sparse plant life. These materials match the species’ sandy, mottled coloring and help the birds blend into the environment, enhancing the camouflage that is their natural defense against predators. Piping plover adults may avoid dense vegetation because it may impede their ability to watch for foxes, raccoons, coyotes and other predators.
The U.S. Atlantic Coast population of piping plovers increased from 476 breeding pairs when it was listed in 1985 to 1,818 pairs in 2019, according to the USFWS. The population increased by 830 breeding pairs in New England but only 349 and 163 pairs in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions respectively.
“This study will help us tailor coastal management recommendations in each region,” said Anne Hecht, a USFWS endangered species biologist and a co-author of the paper. “We are grateful to the many partners who collected data for this study, which will help us be more effective in our efforts to recover the plover population.”
“This research will fuel further studies on piping plovers, their habitat-use and food resources,” Zeigler added. “Refining the models used in this research will help researchers predict habitat availability with future changes in shorelines, sea level and beach profiles.”

Did 2020 Deliver the Perfect Storm for Reshoring the United States of America?
Reshoring
Reshoring has been quietly making a comeback since 2010 when some of the largest brands in the industry began transitioning manufacturing back to meet their customers’ needs. Reshoring, also known as “backshoring”, is when manufacturers pull their operations out of China and other foreign countries and bring them back to North America.
The internet provides access to the world when searching for anything you want and for businesses, it’s usually linked to their bottom line – profits. There are a lot of “smoke & mirrors” behind those cheaper offshore prices. Even before the 2020 disruption, offshoring was losing its luster due to quality, regulations, and intellectual property risks. U.S. technology advancements are keeping labor costs down, while product innovation and efficiency increases. The “Made in America” claim goes far with good public image and trust, especially with U.S. consumers. 80% of American consumers prefer products made in the U.S.A. because they trust it more.
Benefits of Reshoring Your Injection Molded Products
With any project, especially with injection molded parts, having the ability to stop by the shop and talk with your moldmaker directly saves time and money. As parts are being produced, quality control and feedback in “real time” can’t be replicated overseas. When you add those two components into your production, along with shipping it back to the United States, that initial “higher price” will probably come in under your final cost from China. Reshoring also reduces the carbon footprint of long-distance transportation. We at Toth Mold/Die Inc. have always chosen to stay small allowing us the ability to be flexible for our customers’ needs.
Here is a comprehensive list of injection molding services offered by Toth Mold/Die Inc.:

Customers that have purchased injection molds from China have expressed a variety of problems:
The final price is not what was initially expected
Unpredictable mold lifecycles moving forward
Is the mold really yours? Try moving your mold to another vendor
Delivery. Easier said than done, customer has no control on time frame
Risk of intellectual property being duplicated
Communication barrier
Material grade verification
2020 Disruption
This year was like no other, aside from the serious health concerns, global supply chains have been disrupted. Shipping delays and closures from suppliers have forced companies to quickly adapt and find new suppliers and partners. The plastic injection molding industry was one of the most searched categories due to the many parts and products produced deemed essential.
We’ve worked with both large and small companies, as well as inventors and start-ups. Being able to adapt or troubleshoot is what Toth Mold/Die Inc. excels at. You never know who will bring in that incredible new product to create. Inventors and start-ups have great ideas but need help with the injection molding process. Due to the initial low quantity order size, larger injection molding companies tend to turn them away. Since we’re a smaller shop and welcome custom products, we work with them. We’re happy to work through the process with them giving them the best chance for success. When we started our injection molding company nearly 40 years ago, we needed someone to give us a chance. That is why Toth Mold/Die Inc. believes in giving everyone their time to at least listen to and evaluate their product.
