Hey another book. As noted, the lovely @hermit-writes offered a typesetting auction via @marveltrumpshate and I slew many foes to be the victor because I needed to make myself make a book.
I am very grateful they were willing to take the time to turn my longest book, Backhoe, into a beautiful file for me to print into a whole, actual book.
BEHOLD! BOOK! I made a few copies. For reasons.
It is not perfect, you all, but you can read it. I think thicker books are easier than thinner books, as far as making them look tidy? I was intimidated, but, with the major caveat that I have a lot of experience sewing by hand, it wasn't that bad sewing all the pages together.
I love this fabric. It's a woven cotton from Japan. And I made myself a little logo to put on the spine.
Y'all, I want to put that fabric in my mouth. But I didn't lick the fabric even once during production. Aren't you proud??
Please enjoy lovely typesetting by @hermit-writes
Geez, so many swear words. My kids can't read this one either. This fic is SO LONG, and also I didn't really know what I was doing as far as binding it myself and I kept asking for changes like a different font size, etc, and thanks so much for your patience!
Just, really, every page has a swear word. The little leaves dividing sections are sassafras leaves, which are one of my favorite plants, because 1. they have three kinds of leaves and all the leaf shapes are cute 2. the sticks taste kind of like root beer.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I managed to stab myself with the thing you use to make holes in the pages and got a bunch of blood on one of these copies. Who wants the copy with my blood? You are not allowed to use it to put any bad spells on me. It's not special blood, or anything. My blood does not contain any futuristic serums that can be extracted to create mutants or otherwise super powered being. It's just the regular creepy type of blood.

Missed Monday
Work is crazy (as always) and I fell behind again.
For this week’s Missed Monday, I have a one shot from my “Bloopers, Outtakes, and Deleted Scenes” collection. This one is a Caryl one shot, and it comes from the “Broken Mirrors” universe. As always, I’m including the FF link, but you can find it elsewhere.

Here’s a snippet. Don’t forget to go and read the whole thing if you’re interested!

While Carol got dinner started, Eli sat in the living room floor and played with his trucks. Diligently he moved load after load of Legos from one side of the room to the other with the dump truck after he carefully loaded them up, a block or two at a time, with the toy backhoe that Sophia had bought him. The transfer of blocks from just in front of the stairs to just in front of the television was serious work. It had to be done with focus and determination—and three year old Eli had more of that than most children his age seemed to have.
In between her tasks in the kitchen, Carol walked to the living room to glance at the boy, check on his progress, and make sure everything was fine. Every time she checked on Eli, she checked the clock and counted down the time before she could reasonably expect Daryl to get home.
Either her clock was broken, or Carol was a little too anxious to see her husband, because it seemed like it had barely moved since she'd come in the door.

📎+ Functionist Universe AU! (Bonus kudos for a snippet)
(( I started to answer this like “that’s not that far off from their normal histories”, but then I read some wikis and thought about it and slept on it. Pit yeah; it is time for Functionist Universe AU!
Timeline A: The Crew is surviving in the fuctionist universe in their respective positions (which are generally terrible) and then get dragged into the Anti-Vocationist League (which will not end well) or the Lost Light Crew shenanigans when/if they show up.
Timeline B which I am bias for because I love it: REVOLUTION! We may not have a Megatron, but we do have a Nitroxide. The AVL hold the council and public’s attention, but “Ohm” operates in the background; a whisper that will hit like a freight train.
Timeline C which I also love but its far more limiting on which muses I can play and actually just takes an idea from Timeline B and expands on it: Rise of the Cold-Constructs. Those banished to exile have founded a colony, primarily of cold constructs. They have their optics set on conquering the Functionist Cybertron [C.1] or the opposite is true [C.2].
Well, if there are bonus kudos to be had, have a peek at timeline B, which has been affectionately designated “Welcome Ohm” ))
= Construction Site; Date Unknown=
:: Yah know, just once, I’d like to be build’en the build’ens instead of pound’en up rock into gravel into micro-gravel for a fragg’en backdrop.::
Powerhouse glanced to where Piledriver sat in his alt.mode, mincing away at the boulders being fed under him for the decorative stones that would line the crystal garden. Somewhere to their left, the actual building went up without them; they weren’t even really working on the garden’s design. Piledriver crushed rocks, Powerhouse picked things up and put them down; those were their functions, deigned by Adaptus himself.
Once upon a time, Powerhouse had been a good follower of Functionism.
Well, a follower of Functionism.
Well, she pretended to understand Functionism when asked.
It never felt right to her! Despite being strong enough to push the piles of debris around all cycle, it just didn’t stimulate her. The buildings that she watched spring up around her tantalized every process in her processor. Why could a compass be an architect, but not a backhoe just because of their frames? Why couldn’t those with a passion pursue it despite Adaptus’ predetermination?
Powerhouse gave up trying to believe in the Council’s doctrine the orn she met a recruiter for Ohm and heard her thoughts echoed aloud.
The sound of a motorbike engine caught Powerhouse’s attention. She watched an older model (probably scheduled for a recall soon) zip along the edge of the construction zone, turn in and be stopped by the Security before they could make it too far in. A brief exchange took place before the motorbike slowly drove toward the gardens and transformed into an elderly courier.
“Delivery.”
Powerhouse transformed back to root with a smile, “Shamble! It’s been two deca-cycle! How have you been?”
“Still humm’en.” Shamble offered up the package to the larger femme. He looked up at her with his good optic, “that benefactor of your’s says to keep your optics bright and enjoy the treat.”
“That’s what they always say.”
“I gotta be get’en on.”
“Yah just got here, mech.” Piledriver transformed and came to join the other two.
“Deliveries don’t deliver themselves yet, younglings.”
Powerhouse and Piledriver waved the courier off reluctantly.
The femme looked down at the package, opening it and smiling at the energon sweets inside. Candies, in the shape of glyph, tucked neatly around a little oil cake. Powerhouse fished the oil cake out first, handing it off to Piledriver. She emptied the candy glyph into her servo, memorizing them before popping them into her mouth. While she chewed, the backhoe organized the glyph on her HUD, deleting all that matched, leaving only the outliers: Tonight, Talk, Secure.
Powerhouse deleted those glyph as well and returned to pushing debris.

Teardown lets you demolish anything to plan the perfect getaway
It's easy to get lured into Teardown before you even know what it's about. Developer Dennis Gustafsson of Tuxedo Labs has been sharing short clips of it to Twitter, showing off quick snippets of freeform demolition in little voxel buildings. That alone was enough to pique my interest: a backhoe cutting into a modern office building, or someone using a flamethrower to light a panel truck on fire before driving it through the wall of a house.
But it turns out there's more to Teardown than the simple childhood joy of kicking things over. Teardown is a heist game, but one that's split across two phases. In the first, you have complete freedom to case your target and plan out how you're going to get away with each item you're assigned to steal. You can take all the time you want and go wherever you want, and you have an almost Minecraft level of freedom to alter the environment around you.
You have your pick of tools for approaching this. There's a hammer, which you can use to knock down walls (or anything else that might be sensitive to hammers, which as far as I'm concerned is most things), several guns, and the flamethrower mentioned above. Every vehicle can be driven, and can be used to create new pathways or ad hoc doorways. You can build ramps and catwalks using materials like wood planks and wires.

More snippets from that crazy object tf story I’ve been writing
This is an introduction to the character of Victoria Manson, a haunted mobile home.
They found more tunnels. Winnie and Dudley descended into one of them, and reported they had seen a fox den that they’d past in the first one. So, it really was a tunnel. But, why? Why make a tunnel from one part of the woods to the other? Naturally it was easier to walk in these tunnels than through the thick, briary woods, but whoever was making these tunnels had digging equipment or something like that. They didn’t have to worry about walking.
They still hadn’t seen a single truck though, despite the freshness of these tires, and Winnie’s assertions that the scent of metal was getting stronger. Whatever Winnie was leading to, it was not at the other side of a tunnel. Which was a relief. Phillip tried to play it off, but the others both knew he was afraid of the dark. He didn’t want to go in there, even with Dudley near, and also the three didn’t want to split up the party.
There were even collapsed holes where the earth had simply fallen in on a tunnel, which made the boys more cautious about where they tread, and Phillip forbid his friends from searching any more tunnels. Neither of them put up an argument.
They found some tall trees with all their droopy, fabric-like needles on top. They formed a tentlike bough over a long trailer. The trailer had rounded corners, and was chrome, and had fins on the front of it. It was unattached to any truck and wasn’t going anywhere. No backhoes or anything like that, but Phillip couldn’t complain. This place was probably a temporary office for a construction company, so it was better to find it now instead of later.
Dudley was hesitant though, “Hey, you two sure you wanna trust these guys?”
“Didn’t the magic take us some place safe?” Phillip asked.
“Safe from Sugar,” Dudley pointed out, “it doesn’t guarantee we won’t run into someone just as bad, or worse.”
“I doubt you could get worse than an enchantress who replaces people’s humanity with chitin,” Winnie said.
Phillip rubbed him between the antennae, though, “You’re plenty human, pal.”
“Thank you,” Winnie bowed softly.
“Oh, there’s worse than Sugar,” Dudley shoved his hands into his pockets, “believe me.” Winnie’s antennae came up a little.
Phillip coughed, “Let’s go talk to them. Winnie, maybe you should hide yourself in my hat brim.”
Winnie clicked his mandibles, turned his head toward Dudley, and clicked some more, “If he’s not going to hide, I won’t either.”
Phillip nodded, “OK, sounds good, you two guys stay here. I’ll-”
“Will you let me finish?”
Phillip clasped his mouth shut, then uttered, “Sorry, pal, I didn’t know ya were still talking.”
“I’ll shrink and ride the hat,” Winnie said, “but not for my own protection. If anyone in there proves to be un’olesome with you, I’ll simply snap back to this size and protect you.”
That sounded fair. Winnie shrunk down, and Phillip took him from the forest floor, cupping him in his hands. Phillip and Dudley, Winnie in tow, approached the trailer. But the closer they got, the more run down it looked. There were big gouges in the side, and no lights on in the trailer, and they could see tipped furniture through the window.
“Abandoned?” Dudley asked, and Phillip shrugged. When he knocked on the door, it was a metallic rapping sound, like aluminum. He knocked twice, and then again, and when he brought his hand back this time, the door swung outward. Phillip glanced at the others. Well, this changed things. Now they were dealing with an abandoned house situation instead of an office.
“I suppose we can search the place for supplies or something,” Winnie’s voice was so reedy and hissy when he was small, “regardless of whether we’re safe from Sugar, we’re still lost in the woods with no idea where we are and no shelter or food.”
Winnie had a good point. They had left their phones at Phillip’s apartment so as not to be tracked, but it also left the kind of, stranded here. The trailer was at least solid, and they could take shelter here. Phillip opened the door the rest of the way and walked in. The front door opened into living room type area with tipped couches and a smashed TV. There wa a beige rug underfoot, a kitchen to right and a hall to the left.
Dudley walked and the door shut behind it. Shut, and made a very loud locking noise. The human and the lamp stared at it. Then there was a series of scrapes, starting at the end of the house. When the scraping happened in the living room, the window slid across the pane and firmly shut. Then they heard it happening in the kitchen.
Phillip and Dudley exchanged glances, “Maybe we should leave,” Phillip said.
And so they were at the door, trying to unlock it. But the bolt was firmly in place. It was even rusty, as if fused there for years. “What the sac?” Phillip muttered.
The house was moving. The whole thing rumbled, as if attached to a truck. Phillip ran to the kitchen though and saw that there was no truck attached. The trailer was either being pushed, or moving on it’s own accord.
Dudley ran into the kitchen just as the floor started to tilt. The ceiling tilted, too. The whole house was tilting. The ground opened up before them, though. Phillip couldn’t believe what he was seeing- the fins on the trailer were digging into the earth, creating a tunnel. “Sac- I think I know what was doing all that digging.”
“Who’s driving this thing, though?” Dudley asked.
“I know I don’t want to meet them,” Phillip climbed up toward the stove, and reached for Dudley’s hand. Not up stairs- the floor was just at an incredible angle. Winnie jumped from Phillips hat, got big, and skittered up into the living room. Phillip pulled Dudley in, putting his foot on the angle between the wall and the floor for balance. Winnie was already desperately trying to paw at the door- even spitting acid at the the knob, his antennae to twisted and nervous for him to speak.
“Maybe there’s a back door?” Phillip said. The ground was already covering the window as the trailer descended into the Earth, until the weak, streaky sunlight was gone.
“Dark!” He squeaked, and Dudley turned himself on. Phillip put his arms around the lamp.
“Oof! OK. Wait- kid- hold yourself together. We gotta get to that back door.”
So, by Dudley’s light, the three men climbed the hall. It was difficult though, with the strong angle and the heavy vibrating from all around them. Plaster fell from the ceiling and a fire detector swung on it’s wire. Winnie got to the back door, just before the master bedroom, first. He actually opened it! But he only opened in an inch or two before it was stopped- probably by earth.
Phillip and Dudley climbed into the master bedroom. There was a window on their left that was quickly filling with earth, and a window behind the bed. They climbed into the bed, but sunk awkwardly. A filled waterbed? In an abandoned house?
Dudley tried unlatching and sliding the window at first, but it was rusted in place like the doorknob. Phillip was the first to start kicking the window to force it to break, and Dudley picked up a broken table lamp and started swinging. Winnie came into the room and started swinging the back of his trunk at the window. Through the window could be seen a wound of open sky that was getting smaller and smaller.
The house rumbled more. Which is the say, the rumbling became more intense for a few seconds. Then, it stopped moving. The house was at an even keel- or so Phillip’s sense of balance told him. But it was even darker in here. The window over the bed was gone, replaced by a white wall.
There were words on it.
Words written in blood!
I should kill u, but IC 1 of u is a vic. of SS’s magic, so lets talk.

I cleaned this up and posted it to ao3
Also, that being said, if you ever feel the urge to add snippets to the Backhoe universe please do 🫡🫡🫡🫡💖
I do have the urge to write some Backhoe snippets but I also need to manifest free time when I am not so deeply brain dead tired I fall asleep immediately which has been difficult as of late.
But I was just thinking today that I kinda want to write them on 4th July a year later after the first community fireworks show they attended together?
They're officially engaged now and last year everyone had kinda thought Steve was Becca's boyfriend but he's actually Bucky's fiance so how do they navigate that when half the town comes up to them and is like, "oh it's the guy from Brooklyn!" And then tell Bucky wedding bells are going to be in the air soon, is he ready for that?
And they look significantly at Becca and it's supposed to be a sorta low key sexist joke about how Becca is getting married to some guy from Brooklyn and Bucky's expected to be protective of his sister's virtue. And honestly it makes sense on paper that they'd assume that.
Becca is the one who lives in Boston for college and is more likely to have met some kind of skinny artist city boy to bring home, but anyone with eyes willing to really look could tell from a mile away while riding a bucking bronco that Bucky is the one who is running headlong and desperate to marry the guy from Brooklyn.
So Becca says, "he's ready, but I ain't so sure" and they laugh real hard because they think she's just made a joke like Bucky wants to marry her off to the first guy whose come calling so he has one less sister to take care of and the sassy way she rolls her eyes at Bucky makes everyone say something like, "you got your work cut out for you with all these sisters, Barnes!"
And Bucky says, "Lawwww don't I know it, cain't imagine it otherwise. Busy hands, full heart, as mom always said," which is what his mother always used to say when someone said something like that to her. And the random person walks off.
This interaction repeats itself in various iterations a dozen or more times over the evening. But every now and then someone wanders over to say hi to the Barnes conglomeration picnic blanket and immediately clocks Steve and Bucky for a young couple that's so in love they're about to burst.
Like Mrs. Wilson's pastor, who pulls Bucky up out of his chair and into a bear hug, whispering something into Bucky's ear that no one else can hear.
He let's Bucky go with a broad grin and a hearty slap on the back and a wink for Steve. "You got your work cut out for you with this one, Steven," Mrs. Wilson's pastor booms in his low voice with a wink. Bucky's eyes are glossy with a few tears from whatever the pastor whispered to him and Steve is overwhelmed with how beautiful his fiance (FIANCE!!) looks.
"Busy hands, full heart," Steve says, and Bucky's eyes get even shinier, and Steve really wants to kiss Bucky, but they are surrounded by Bucky's entire county so he doesn't.
It's the first year Poppy doesn't fall asleep at the fireworks show. Bucky almost cries realizing she's growing up, and he doesn't have to carry her to the van. But on the other hand she's 4 inches taller and a fair bit more than 4 pounds heavier than last year so he's kind of relieved he's not lugging her the half a mile back to the van. So it's complicated.
After they get home and get all the girls upstairs for bed, Bucky asks Steve if he wants to go on a walk.
They don't make it too far before Steve grabs Bucky and presses him hard against a tree, all strong hands and desperate lips. It's all a dream until they try and get too creative and fall in the creek.
Some time later they stumble back to the house laughing and giddy and exchanging lazy debauched kisses with wet hair and their shirts off and pants barely done back up (because the creek caused a pause but was not sufficient to cool them off).
Bucky stops up short and freezes because Hannah and Becca are sitting on the front porch, drinking ice tea and chatting in the dark out on the porch swing.
"It's after midnight, y'all should be in bed," Bucky says automatically.
Becca let's out a peal of laughter. "You are not in a position to lecture others about who should be in a bed for their evening's planned activities."

This fic is a gift for TheGirlSleuth (@thegirldetectivesblog) and a fill for @marveltrumpshate.
Endless gratitude to Tenmilestilts and @booksandabeer as well as E_Greer aka @pawpawholler for the Appalachian accent consult. Thanks to @lochnesswriter for the feedback on aroace love confessions (relevant to chapter two). Special shout out to @i-am-a-dragon-dragon and others for the Tumblr asks that helped me with writer's block!
One of the themes of this set of stories is that It Takes a Village and so I suppose it’s fitting that writing this took a village. This feels hopelessly self indulgent and frankly amazes me that anyone besides me cares about it, not gonna lie, but I must be a lucky bastard.
So. Okay.
Chapter 1 Summary:
Hannah Barnes is losing her mind over how fucking attractive and also damn likable Sam Wilson is. Thoughts and prayers appreciated.

Open note: Feel free to pressure me into writing on my Backhoe sequel snippets. Putting this into the universe. It takes a village. Send me asks about the characters, what I'm writing, requests for snippets or threatening telegrams.
I'm open. I have some plots drafted, I just need people to yell at me to write the thing. Backhoe pictures below the jump
Or read Backhoe and yell at me in the comments. This is the fic. No obligation, it just keeps coming up.
I need to re-do a bunch of the pictures I made for Backhoe as well, as I had had the html pointing at discord which no longer allows external image hosting (I hate that I know this, I hate html)
I'm traveling for work this week, so I will have time in the evenings...
LOOK AT STEVE ROGERS. Hims just a lil guy. So sad. So handsome.
LOOK AT BUCKY BARNES. How dare you, Bucky Barnes.
How can a person wearing so many shirts be so slutty? It should not be possible.

IS BACKHOE! STEVE'S ART INSPIRED BY ANASTASIA TRUSOVA?
Actually Tension and Tonic Steve but also maybe Backhoe Steve! For whatever reason I remember less of my inspiration for Steve's art in Backhoe. I must have spent less time thinking about it. I would have to see if I have notes about it. I do not know if it is laziness or consistent characterization that I want to say both versions of this character have a similar artistic style? 😄
Anastasia Trusova
But I was also thinking of Erin Hansen who is vaguely kind of vibing with Trusova.
I was also thinking of Maia Cruz Palileo
Particularly thinking about how they integrate figures into landscapes
I think Backhoe Steve would be more grounded in realistic greens and Tension and Tonic Steve more into the glowing pinks and purples. New Orleans artist James Michalopoulos (who is better known for painting houses)
Backhoe Steve is obsessed with shades of green. There are so many and he loves them all and is always on a quest for the best one but they are all so good he wants to eat them.
The throughline for me being really physical, lush chunks of oil paints in deep, slightly spooky, dreamlike surrealist landscapes.

ooh tell me more about becca and natasha in backhoe. hannah and sam seem like a really fun dynamic
Hi, I just mostly finished a 5000 word fic about Hannah and Sam getting together for the first time. I'm going to post it later this week.
Hannah Barnes has had a crush on Samuel Wilson since before she knew what a crush was. She just knew it made her whole body feel good to watch him smile, and that the arc of his arm when he tossed a football was somehow more beautiful than a whole field of wildflowers blooming in the spring. Hannah has spent years cultivating a reputation at work for being hard as nails, but there are a few annoying weaknesses she’s never been able to shake.
Special thanks to you and @late-to-the-party-81 (Jen) and others who have energized me with your Backhoe engagement since I made my call for help!

bucky anxiety scale based on how clingy to steve he is (specifically in hot neighbor and backhoe)
Um yes I adore this! It's not something I have thought about concretely but it makes perfect sense to me and is definitely how I have written them.
What's so beautiful about it is that Steve (and the reader) (okay and also Becca in whatever universe I haven't murdered her in, obviously) are often the only ones that know about the secret Bucky anxiety scale because he's so good at hiding it with most people.
And Steve being somewhat bad at feelings, which is not an insult, I think Steve cares about feelings and wants to be useful re: feelings but that does not mean he's all that good at them which I think is very charming actually.
I digress (who me, digress?) but my dearest friend in the world who I would die for and has my kids in her will and I just spent like 20 hours landscaping the yard in her new house in extreme heat because giving people berry plants in aesthetic arrangements and researching soil amendments is how I show affection. Anyway this dear human is so good at feelings that I sometimes don't want to tell her things because she is so perceptive and empathetic and lovely that I can't handle it when I'm already on the edge. I have learned to text her and say, "this terrible thing happened please don't respond I'm in my masculine stare at the wall in a manful fashion stage of grief and I can't handle kind words" and she always gets it ( because she is so fucking good at feelings)(i love her).
BUT ANYWAY I think Bucky is a person who wants to have control over how he is perceived (more so than most) and Steve is one of the few people that is not the case for.
I think one reason that Bucky can trust Steve with his messiest messy parts is that sometimes Steve is a little oblivious and doesn't even notice exactly how messy Bucky is being.
Or Bucky can pretend Steve doesn't notice. Steve sometimes does notice, he's not that bad, and as they know each other better over time, he can see right through the old Bucky Barnes razzle dazzle. (he loves and respects the razzle dazzle. Seeing through it only makes it more charming to Steve). And he has learned Bucky likes him to pretend he doesn't notice when Bucky is a 10 on the old Cling to Steve-o-meter.
Which is fine by Steve as he just wants to be helpful. So Bucky can cling away and Steve will be like, "hey feel like having tacos tonight, Buck? How about I cook and you sit on the counter next to me, if you don't mind."

1. poppy coming in the backdoor looking like the failed merida animation at 0:35 https://youtu.be/4405qEhBmEM
@i-am-a-dragon-dragon tumblr ate your ask after I replied. I had copied this part so I could view the (cursed) animation. Poppy resents being compared to Merida though obviously she looks exactly like Merida so it's gonna happen.
Steve is laughing at how much he can see Hank wants to give them furniture til he realizes holy shit he could get all this new furniture? So now Steve is blatantly scheming about furniture he can break or give Away so Hank will replace it with something exquisitely made and finely wrought and now Bucky is laughing at Steve.

given steve's general obliviousness in backhoe, is he aware of the sexual element of action camps? is this another place where doesn't notice all the people trying to flirt with him?
You are spoiling my obsessive author's heart with all these fun questions.
Yeah it is one reason he spends the whole time hiding out in the art tent and doesn't drink or get high and is generally uncomfortable with the sexual element of action camps. And no one is forced into it and often places like the art tent are a plac e anyone can chill and be productive and not have pressure to find romance or whatever.
Because he feels very uncomfortable with it all. He only leaves the art tent to hang out at the campfire after Natasha points out it's a dry camp and no one will be intoxicated.
That being said, yeah he's definitely aware people are hitting on each other and not like judgy about it but not comfortable about it either. He's oblivious that anyone would be hitting on him.
I think it's like a snake eating its tail of awkward though because he feels awkward and lonely because he doesn't know how to make out with anyone and figures no one wants to kiss him so he isolates himself and runs away every time he starts to feel a vibe like he might be attracted to someone which then literally isolates him so he never gets to be very close with anyone which is why he often feels lonely.
Anyway I am sure no one here can relate to that kind of dynamic!!

so when bucky's hearing all about steve the artist in backhoe, does that also include how steve's so pretty and so oblivious like when bucky meets steve's grad school friends?
Your questions are so good! I think for this one no, not really. I don't think the activist crowd know Steve nearly as well as his roommate and grad school/undergrad friends do. They all probably see Steve as a mysterious and incredibly talented artist. He's not actually mysterious, he's just shy and introverted, but he is very talented!
Obviously they all think he's pretty though.
