Staff Pick: Back to the Beach (1987)
For the uninitiated: After decades spent deep in midwest suburbia, 60’s beach blanket boppers Frankie and Annette head back to Los Angeles - only to discover the 80's happened. A lot.
Damian Slade steals the show as their Punk son with a mean aversion to peanut Butter (80s kids saturated with Skippy commercials will know what that’s all about) and Connie Stevens, well, steals everything else.
This tubular Frank Mancuso Jr.-produced love letter to the old campy beach musicals has been a gnarly guilty pleasure since I first saw it in theaters - yes I was lured by the rad TV spot promising Pee-Wee, Don Adams and Gilligan in one big Paramount-produced music-fuelled bodacious beach blowout. I wasn’t disappointed.
Like a Stunned Mullet in a coconut shell, it’s been a perfect nostalgia cocktail ever since.
Drink up, big Kahuna.
