I NEVER LET HER CRY OUT, never taught her or gave her the chance to learn how fall asleep on her own and I am paying the price today... Becoming mum for the second time I am definitely doing some things differently. I have obviously changed my approach to parenting. I have grown but also learnt to be mum. I am still far from doing everything perfectly and to be honest, motherhood is everyday a challenge for me. Some accomplishments I have nicely nailed one day, will turn into real struggles the next day or sometimes even on the same day... I recognise my mistakes. I never liked needles. When I was younger, I always cried my lungs out every time I had to get an injection. I used to roll on the floor, scream and throw all sort of tantrums. The lolly rewards did not work on me... I took India for her 4 month immunisation today. I thought the second time around, I would cope better. After all, I should be used to it as I went through it with Lilou not so long ago. So far, I have been good sending Luke to kids immunisation so I didn't have to see it. I couldn't escape this time...so off I went. For those who are mums, you must know and probably already have experienced empathy for your children. That connection with my children is so real that I could almost feel the needle pricking India's leg. Also, what a horrible feeling that literally hurts you to the core! Seeing your child in pain and being completely useless is the worst thing ever! I can't stop myself from tearing up every single time. I wish I could take her pain away even if I had to endure it myself, even if the pain has to be 10 times worse. I would do it regardless. In fact, when I became a mum, I also gave my heart to them. I will not hesitate a second to give my life for them. Back when I wasn't a mum yet, I remember a friend telling me about her husband. He couldn't watch any tv show or documentaries...in which children were ill or hurt because he couldn't bear the thought of it happening to his own children. I can totally resonate with that. Kids have no manners! She squatted down in the middle of the crowd. Her face turned completely red. She was staring at me. I knew what she was up to and there was absolutely nothing I could do. I waited till was done...that was the day, Lilou pooped in public. Thinking about it today, the scene was quite hilarious but I wasn't impressed when it happened and got embarrassed by the stinky smell. At that young age children have absolutely no idea of what is socially acceptable to do or not. They're in the process of learning manners, good behaviour...so you can expect to have a few slips down the road. 8 Funny French sayings. For those of you who don't know French and English are quite similar languages. In fact, the English language uses about 60% of French words (or vise versa, some would prefer to say). If you grab a French book, you would be surprised how many words you can actually recognise. The biggest difference is in the pronouncing! And the French are well know for that monotonous accent! That accent that I would probably never get rid off... Learning a different language is hard work and takes a lot of hours of repeating, reading, listening... In my process of learning, I got across few situations where my conversational party looked at me funny and wondered what I meant to say. Not only because of my accent but because I translated word for word some french sayings which of course didn't mean anything in English. What helps her to learn and remember. "Not on the floor Lilou!" "Don't put it in your mouth!" "Not on your clothes!" "Not in your hair and not on India!" "Use the brush! Ok, use your fingers if you want!" "On the paper, not the wall!" That was a glimpse of the rules for our painting activity this morning. To help my little girl to learn but also develop her imagination, skills, motor functions...I have been trying as much as I can (with whatever time I can manage) to do all sorts of activities with her. Drawing, painting, puzzles, cooking, dressing up... I love watching her solving problems, thinking and getting better at it day after day. Pretty much like routine, all those exercises need practice and repetition to be understood and executed without difficulty. It's the process of learning and I will never stop being amazing by how fast kids are learning and how much they can learn. Lilou is at that age where she should be learning colours, among many other things. We have been reading books together, watching videos, playing with Lego...but it doesn't seem that she can remember them, it just goes over her head and doesn't show any interest in learning the colours. That was until today... The painting activity got all her attention. She asked for the colours she wanted, repeated them all and enjoyed mixing them together. She did a lot of drawing, feeling that cold and silky paint on her hands and messing with it. I understood today that our abilities to learn and assimilate things differ from one another. Back at school, I was hopeless at remembering anything unless I wrote it on paper. Some other of my classmates were fine just listening. I guess it's the same with our children. Wow! I can still remember Lilou's first tooth coming through. Pinky cheeks, dribbling, temperature, soft stools, cranky baby...she gave me all the warning signs so I knew what was going on. After few days I could see the tooth through the gum and could feel it. The poor girl was in pain and it was really disturbing her. Beside's the fact that she was a terrible sleeper, she was sleeping even less!!! She wanted to be latched on my breast constantly. It was the best way to calm her down and soothe her. I also bought some teething gel that sort of numbed the gum and helped too. After a week of pain, tears and fever, her first tooth finally came through. Today, she has an almost full mouth of teeth!
