I think the fandom has had a turnaround on her in recent years, so the Chi-chi abuse has abated quite a bit from what I've seen, but for the longest time your standard Goku/Vegeta fic included SOME manner of sidelining her HARD, if not outright villainizing her or killing her off for convenience. Fuck, I'm guilty of it, even. I've seen meta and fics that go on and on about how she's abusive or ignorant or a bad wife or an overnearing mother or useles, and seen episodes where she's put aside as a gag, the nagging wife of Goku. Poor Chi-chi...she is so great and pure-hearted and stong-willed and yeah she's a bit of a tiger-mom and her name is a pun for tiddies but she loves her family and kicks-ass and she was done so dirty by the franchise and the fans for so long I wanna marry her.

Being a victim of yaoi is just one of the many ways Chi-Chi gets fucked over by the fandom. She also gets degraded for being a nag (wanting her family to be safe and not fight) and stopping her son from reaching his full potential (not wanting her son, who is anywhere from 5 to 11 depending, to be killed in a big alien fight). In this case, though, she gets killed off, divorced, or otherwise fucked over so her husband Goku can bang local genocidal maniac and fandom babygirl Vegeta. Bulma (who is canonically Vegeta's love interest) gets some of this too, but Chi-Chi's treatment tends to be worse since the fandom hates her already.

She's the wife of the main character Goku who is poorly written and consistently presented as a domineering nag as part of that classic sidesplitting routine. The very creator of the manga himself has admitted he hates drawing her and only kept her around as a punishment to himself. Because she's a loud woman people will shove her aside and completely ignore her to ship Goku with his rival Vegeta (which does also involve neglecting Vegeta's wife Bulma but more people at least like Bulma as a character.) She is consistently demonized by the fandom and I have even seen some go so low as to as to ignore her so they can ship Frieza, one of the biggest and most obviously evil antagonists of the franchise, with Goku.

Thoughts about what makes a good villain!

Hello <3 sorry this took so long to answer but I'm in the middle of planning and executing a move to a different country.

I think the only real crime a villain can commit is being boring. They can be contemptible, stupid, cartoonish, completely detached from reality, or they can be brilliant, dangerous, sexy, literally correct; they can be all style or all substance; the only real litmus test is whether they're entertaining.

Some of my favorite fictional villains and why I like them:

Currently, I'm reading the Crown of Stars series by Kate Elliot, and Hugh is absolutely one of the most contemptible villains I've ever encountered. The first book was genuinely hard to read because of what a fucking monster he is, and Elliot knows how to draw the most out of it - stretching his comeuppance over 6 books because even though he's fucking despicable, he's also unfailingly polite in most circumstances, and a beautiful man of noble though illegitimate birth and high rank in the clergy, so people have a hard time believing him to be as evil as he is even if they've wronged him before. At the same time, Elliot also does a very good job of making sure you never forget exactly what he is, so even when he returns to the people he's wronged acting contrite, you see through it. The ultimate effect is that even 5 books in, I'm hollering at him to kill himself (usually when driving alone in my car), and I dunno if I've ever been that profoundly affected by a literary antagonist before.

Kuja from Final Fantasy 9. He's spoiled, he's beautiful, he's a babygirl, he's pathetic, he's 24 and should have been at the club. I like how he isn't afraid to spam his most powerful spell whenever he's losing. Honestly whenever you see me rooting hard for a villainous sorceress (or occasional prettyboy sorcerer) it's for similar reasons.

The Obligatory Sasuke mention, which is wild because I think everything that I find compelling about him is something you have to read in direct contradiction to Kishimoto's intentions with the series. In a meta sense, I find it super compelling how he's the sort of villain whose motivations unavoidably invoke the fundamental problems in the setting that the tepid liberalism of its core themes and protagonists cannot address, and how that's subsumed into an emotional arc so he can be the redeemed shonen rival in the end.

Inspector Javert is a favorite because he forces the audience to separate legality from ethics; past that, he's also just a really good examination of the sort of person you'd become if you gutted everything that made you human and replaced it with legalism.

Cersei Lannister from the ASOIAF is a great example of a book letting you into the internality of a villain, showing you they're a complete wreck of a person, and it not doing anything to soften the blow when it comes time for them to ruin things for everyone again.

Death from The Seventh Seal is one of my favorite cinematic depictions of personified death. He isn't gentle or comforting like some depictions - he's underhanded, merciless, and for all his affability, relentlessly pursues Block such that his inevitably end claims the lives of just about everyone he loves, as well. It's nightmarish.

my boy SHEEV. Maybe the purest example of "it's good as long as they're fun". His inclusion in TROS is NONSENSE but I don't mind because I will literally never say no to more palpatine screentime.

Goku Black from Dragon Ball Super is great for the sole purpose that, when he's on the scene, a character you care about will die.

Those are a scattered selection of some of my favorites. I wish I had a more compelling analysis for who was in or out, but it really does boil down to don't bore me and there are a lot of ways for a villain to be compelling. Thank you for the ask ^_^

It's funny how much my portrayal of Kakavege has changed through the years.

6 years ago, I portrayed Vegeta as a tsundere man. Very much in love with Goku, and very much with some type of social anxiety.

I also portrayed Goku as a clueless man. A lovable idiot that somehow always knew what Vegeta was thinking. (He also loves Vegeta very much).

But in the year of our lord 2023, things have changed around.

I now portray Vegeta as this bpd ptsd needy babygirl, that can not express himself properly. (Or really, at all). He's obsessed with Goku to the point that it makes him angsty af. He's also very much in love with Goku.

I also now portray Goku as an autistic himbo that loves Vegeta but can't really comprehend him. He tries his best, tho. Also, he has a little bit of a savior complex brewing there.

I like better the way I portray them now bc (imo) they're more true to the characters.

Explaining who Goku Black is to people is just as funny. No, no, this isn't Goku. This is Zamasu, a Kai from another universe (yes, there are other universes), who stole Goku's body and killed him. Cue the person I was talking to give me a flabbergasted face as the gears in their head turn. Then I mention him partnering up with himself.

Young Zamasu was so enthusiastic to be approached by Gowasu and asked to be his apprentice. It's sad how his youthful cheer turned into disillusionment during his apprenticeship. To be fair, he really wasn't wrong, but he wasn't right either. He simply couldn't get out of the mindset that gods = perfect and mortals = imperfect, perfect = good and imperfect = bad, therefore gods = good and mortals = bad. That, and he was salty about Goku handing his butt to him. Maybe he had a point in being worried that a mortal was just as strong as a god, though.

marisol is basically if all the goodness and kindness in the world was smushed into the prettiest girl in the world. she’s the embodiment of lathander’s ideals - kind, just, righteous and always wishes for the best. she is his chosen for this reason alone and she is well loved by her god.

she’s my attempt at a negative growth character where she doesn’t change despite the challenges she faces. think of like how goku is the same fucking guy no matter what. marisol is this way too and it’s because of how deeply she understands lathanderite doctrine - the world can be as much of a dark, cruel and unforgiving place as it wants to be marisol will just match it in her mercy, her kindness and forgiveness.
