My Ultimate Guide to Creating and Developing Characters
Creating characters is difficult. They’re the drive for your story, more than logic, more than emotion, and more than a little pain in the ass. Since creating characters is a hobby of mine, I wanted to share my ideas for the ultimate character development guide that may gather some inspiration for my fellow writers who have searched the internet for ideas just as desperately as I have.
1. Start with a name
I know, I know, eye roll. But this actually works more than you think.
A lot of times when I’m beginning a story, I have some inkling of what kind of character I’m looking for, but have no way to breathe life into that creature. They’re like ghosts underneath an aesthetic mood board. So I look into names.
Usually, how I pick names is by what their meaning. Names are actually really cool- they depict personality traits or weird objects or other strange things that could give your character a hidden shadow. If you’re like me, and have no idea where to begin because your character is currently personality-less, I would suggest simply looking up names that mean either “good” or “bad” based on if they’re a protagonist or an antagonist, on the side of good or evil, or simply somewhere in between.
Here’s a website with the eight different types of characters for reference: https://timstout.wordpress.com/graphic-novel-writing/eight-character-roles/
And here’s a list of fun websites that I often use when looking for name meanings:
https://www.behindthename.com/search.php

And don’t worry if you still don’t have any idea. Sometimes finding a name right away is not for everyone!
2. Look through typical tropes
Something I’ve realized through every story I try to write is that you will never create a character that couldn’t be stereotyped in some way. But that’s okay. I often find that looking through typical character tropes offers a place to begin understanding where my character fits into my story. Of course, it’s important to keep a character from becoming too “Mary Sue,” but character tropes do exist for a reason. We see them every day in real life.
Here’s a guide to popular character tropes: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArchetypalCharacter
3. Create a personality: Personality types
Okay, this is the fun and also the tricky part. I’ve seen lots of different ideas on how to develop a character’s personality, and thought I’d list them all in one post for anyone who might find it helpful.
Whenever I begin determining a character’s personality, I always start with the Myer Brigg’s personality test.
For anyone who doesn’t know, this test takes your results and puts you into a four-letter personality type, with each letter explaining how you perceive the world and make decisions. The website can be found here: https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test
Usually, I simply take the test a few times with answers I think might be accurate to my character and see how it leads me. This approach can be tricky though, so you can instead read into each personality type and see which one might work best for your character.
The test is very accurate, and can give valuable insight into a person’s mind. If you haven’t taken it for yourself, you definitely should!
Here are a few other personality tests I like to use for character creation:

4. Create a personality: AU’s
I try to do these at least a few times a week, even if they are sometimes hard to commit to. But even just trying this trick out once can be very helpful.
Spend a few minutes thinking of a weird scenario- it can be anything, movie nights, grocery shopping, buying a pet- and imagine your character in that scenario and how they would react to the events around them. There are hundreds of prompts out there that will spark inspiration for these kinds of AU drafts. Get creative and see how your character surprises you.
Here are a couple Tumblr blogs with some really fun AU ideas:

Another trick I like to use is putting my character into my shoes. A customer annoyed me? How would that character have handled it? Got emotionally exhausted from something? How would that character have handled it? See how your character would’ve dealt with your day similarly or differently than you. It’s quite fun, and even helps as a daily therapy.
5. Create a personality: Personal reference
This one is very strange, and definitely not for most people, but as a side note, it’s a fun exercise.
Go through your day as your character.
Yep, you read correctly. Got to go to work and deal with homework and/or home responsibilities? How would your character handle your day? A lot of times during my work shift I switch gears from myself and pretend like my character is actually working this shift. I promise, this actually works: I’ve had more revelations about my character trying to get through the next day of mindless drama than I care to admit.
Disclaimer: Please be careful with this one. Some characters aren’t the nicest and I don’t think the “oh, sorry, I was pretending to be this character from my newest novel” won’t go over too well.
If you’re not into this one, it can be interesting to still be yourself, but mentally be aware of how your character would be internally reacting as you go through the day.
6. Discover the specifics
Here it it: character profiles. They can be a pain to fill out sometimes, but I pinky promise that they are extremely helpful.
A lot of times while writing, it’s easy to forget about the details. I’ve found that keeping lists of a character’s traits, quirks, background information and beliefs can really help make sure a character stays consistent, and also show the necessary areas for growth that will eventual develop your character by the end of the book.
This one is definitely my favorite: http://theboson.deviantart.com/art/Blank-Character-Sheet-2-1-8-390-Questions-460031650

7. Get creative
This gets as crazy as you want it to. My favorite way to continue learning about my character is to creative a private Tumblr “blog” for them. As I’m looking through posts, if something jumps out that I think “oh wow, that sounds a lot like (insert here),” then I reblog it, until it grows into a crazy master blog of inspiration.
Other ideas are writing journals, creating mood boards, or simply making playlists that provide inspiration into your character. Go wild.
~o~o~o~o~o~o~
I hope that helped some people out there. I struggle a lot with sticking to one idea, so playing around with these character development techniques have really kept me focused. Enjoy!
