Just 7 low-key basics for any beginning witch:
1) learn how to dress and light a candle without burning your house down. A little oil goes a long way. A lot of oil goes right into a bad situation.
2) learn how to light and position incense so you don’t set off the fire alarms. Fans are an amazing friend. They circulate the smell of the incense to your whole living space, but also diffuses the smoke.
3) do not store your planchette on your ouija board (it’s like leaving your house unlocked).
4) make sure you research oils before you diffuse them if you have animals. I.e citrus straight oils or citrus oil in oil blends make dogs sick and lily oil can kill cats.
And by the gods don’t diffuse banishing oil because you’ll end up with a pepper spray situation.
5) you don’t absolutely need a holder. You just need to soften the bottom of a candle enough (yes with fire) and it will stick to a surface. A flame resistant surface (see rule one about accidentally burning down things).
6) don’t poison the earth with a ring of salt on the grass. Ashes from incense or powdered egg shells works the same. And add nutrients to the soil.
Salt inside, not outside.
And 7) if you live in an apartment or house that will not be friendly to any burning, make your favorite herbs into infusions. You can use them on their own, or mix different ones easily, for any desirable effect. Unlike burning the herbs, smoke detectors shouldn’t go off unless you spray right at them. (Watch for mold in the bottle).
I’m being a touch humerus but I also mean every bit of it.

i tried to play into tumblr's automatic video looping but you can also watch it on youtube with subtitles for the dialogue, it's not that important, it's more about the idea of the loop than the experience

What is Toxic Spirituality?
Spirituality is the practice of getting to know yourself better on a deeper level and learning about the world around you.
While this can provide physical, mental, and emotional health benefits, it can also take a turn for the worse. Sometimes spirituality can push harmful messages, toxic positivity, judgment, gaslighting, and cultish behavior.
Nine Toxic Spirituality Habits
1. Spiritual Bypassing and Toxic Positivity
Spiritual bypassing is when you use spiritual concepts to avoid certain emotions or situations in your life.
Toxic positivity is when you believe you need to be always positive to gain proper manifestation of your desires.
Suppressing emotions can lead to a buildup of unprocessed thoughts dependent on circumstances, and eventually you will mentally implode.
2. Spiritual Narcissism
Spiritual narcissism is the belief that your spirituality makes you better than others. It’s the Us vs. Them mentality.
The stronger your ego identifies with a specific belief the more difficult it will be to see any issues.
3. Idolizing Spiritual Teachers
The best teachers are the ones that help connect you to your inner self. Their goal is to act as a guide more so rather than be the ultimate truth.
The trouble idolizing spiritual mentors is that there will be a point you’re going to disagree, and it will cause cognitive dissonance if you see them for more than they are.
4. Superstitions and Attachment
If you heavily rely on spiritual practices, items, and rituals to exist in the world and become solely dependent about superstitious beliefs linked to any of them, you are diminishing yourself.
You don’t need crystals to protect yourself.
You don’t need the wand to draw energy.
You don’t need the cauldron to burn incense or make potions. Although, even I can admit having one makes things more interesting.
5. Hyper Discipline
I see this a lot. There are those that talk about the importance of discipline in spirituality. Likewise, I see others talk up the importance of flexibility.
Spirituality is a personal experience. If disciplined daily practices or rigid rituals work for you, then great, but if it feels forced reconsider things.
6. Lack of Discernment
Not every spiritual practice will be right for you. Not everything will resonate. Not every metaphysical concept will ring truth. That’s good. It’s healthy to ask questions and think for yourself.
If you accept without question, you’re allowing yourself to be programmed by external forces becoming conditioned.
7. Clinging to Truth
What’s true for you may not be true for someone else, and what was true for you last year may no longer be true for you today.
Our beliefs can change over time as we learn and experience different facets to spirituality. Fighting for the word of truth or standing behind a specific religion promoting acts of war is an act of blasphemy. In that regard, belief and religious culture do not always coincide.
8. Emotional Hypochondria
It’s possible to become attached to your own healing, making you feel the need to become a better, and better version of yourself.
Always overanalyzing everything will lead to an emotional burnout, and you will be hyper aware of every single feeling. You will become self-depreciating, and you will be running in a circle like a silly hamster in its wheel going nowhere.
9. Manic Manifesting
Shut up about manifestation. I’m tired. It’s everywhere. Constantly visualizing your desires, parroting affirmations, and trying to control every single frequency makes it feel manic.
Thinking on what you don’t have will make you see less of what you do have, and it is like beating yourself up mentally every day for those things you do not have.
Thinking on it without action is an obsession. The secret was a fun concept for a book, but unless you put it into actual action. There will be no change, Laws of physics, every action has a reaction. Because thinking is more like potential energy, but that still needs an activator. No one is going to miraculously fix things for you. You can do worksheets on what you want every day for the rest of your life, but at the end of your life you will have nothing you want except a pile of worksheets with your hopes and dreams that never happened.
Diminishing Toxic Spirituality
If you’ve been participating in toxic spirituality, own it and grow from it. Be mindful of your intentions, ask questions, and navigate your experiences.
When something isn’t working you will know it, when you realize that something is wrong, it may have already set you back. When something keeps replaying in your mind, maybe that’s an area to work on. Or delve deeper, but with an analytical mind, rather than one that accepts everything. It’s like eating at a buffet. You can see the chicken is green, you can smell its rancid. But the person with you says it’s good. Are you going to take that at face value and trust them, or make your own choice?
Correct motivations for spirituality, belonging to a group is great. They help people feel connected, and it gives joy to be able to connect. While it is not for everyone, some people see the appeal in it, but as a result can become absorbed into the group and lose their individuality. Their need to be accepted can drive them to poor decision making, at the expense of their autonomy due to peer pressure.
Some go into practice to fuel their ego or have something unique and quirky to talk about. If it’s a fad, it probably isn’t the best idea. If you must run around yelling to your bullies at school, I'm a witch I will curse you. That is likely not the right reason to delve into a spiritual journey. While it may be doing it for your own sense of internal control over an aspect of your life, the journey becomes more about what you have against others, rather than delving within yourself and finding yourself.
Money, Power, Quick fixes. Spirituality and religions offer seemingly quick results with fake promises. Love spells, Churches, Community support. While in theory sounds too good to believe. Often the promises made by various people, groups, and sectors of religion can be very appealing; at times it is used for the profit of the people providing the services.
You would be surprised how many people offer snake oil, or a djinn in a ring for money. To give you all you want. If you are looking for your life to magically be alright, please remember this isn’t a modern fairytale.
Happy endings happen in movies because they can’t fit it all into an 80-minute run. There's character development, there’s ups downs, trials and moments of success and happiness. Without those moments, we don’t really discover who we are. We are more of a hollow once off character in a movie playing a role. We do not find us; we do not create... an Us in such a short time.
It’s best to be yourself, and not part of some collective.
The spiritual journey is yours so do it for yourself.

I think for a lot of witches who aren't in covens, the desire to be in a coven is really just the desire to have real-life friends who practice.
(I'm speaking as a witch who is not and has never been in a coven, and currently has no desire to be.)
I absolutely see the value of covens, and I have some thoughts about the use of covens in community building, social justice witchcraft and mutual aid brewing (no pun intended), but I think a lot of people seek out a coven when what they really want are people to share their practice with who can give knowledge and resources in return.
I'm lucky to have half-a-dozen friends interested in witchcraft in my local community, and having them around gives me so much motivation to practice more and more often. even when I've actually practiced with only one or two of them, we're constantly giving each other resources that helped us and extra materials we no longer need. the impulse from beginner witches especially, I've found, comes from wanting specific personal guidance from a witch they perceive as more experienced. The best way to form these personal connections, in my experience, is to have friends who are friends first, fellow witches second.
in all honesty I don't know what I'm trying to say with this other than:
go seek out people with similar interests as you in witchy spaces, go seek out witchy people in spaces related to your other interests, and be there to help your friends who are interested in practicing. it can be unbelievably valuable to your practice and your interpersonal life.

Consecration and protection of the home
During the fall and winter, often at campfires or near the fireplace, stories of the paranormal and the unexplained are shared. These stories often center around the places that are closest to us, such as a family home, a favorite campsite, or a commonly traveled dirt road. Many people are hesitant to speak of these events, however, they often feel safe or encouraged to share them over a late-night cup of hot cocoa and s'mores.
Scary stories often get me jittery, and one thing that provides me comfort is protecting the home from stirred-up spirits and negative energies. Creating the home into a refuge is vital to the spiritual health of the home overall. While there are many ways and traditions regarding protecting the home, I will share two methods that I find the most useful.
Method 1 - Salt and Pepper Protection Ritual
Begin by cleansing your home with the method of your choosing. My go-to for this method is mopping the floors with a cleaner like pine-sol as it cleanses the entirety of the floors, which is important for this method.
Then, open all of the exterior doors. Using a broom sweep outwards over all of the thresholds. As you do this, command any unwanted energies to leave by repeating "I command ALL energies that do not serve me, that do not have good intentions, and that take away from the spirit of this home to LEAVE. You are NO LONGER welcome HERE. As I sweep, you EXIT."
Once that is done, it is time to prepare your herbs and ingredients. I use table salt mixed with rosemary, ceremonial tobacco, sun-charged beer, whiskey, or gin, and whole peppercorns. If you do not have authentic ceremonial tobacco, use the alcohol in its place. I was gifted my tobacco by a dear friend and mentor of mine who comes from that practice and cultural background. If you want to use tobacco as I do, I suggest you seek out a mentor yourself to learn about the practice. Once you have these items prepared and at hand, you may move on to the next step.
Begin by going to the exterior of your home. Using your charged alcohol, begin to offer it to the earth. If you have tobacco, offer that to the earth as you were taught to. I always give thanks to the wonderful space I occupy and am a steward of, and acknowledge that this land is older than I am and that it is my elder. I complete my offering by kneeling and touching my forehead to the earth, being sure to give profound thanks.
Now, locate the four primary external corners of your home. If your space has more than four sides or is oddly shaped, form a square around the space that wholly encompasses it. This may be represented as the fence around your property, or the outside corners of your apartment building. Beginning at the northernmost corner, pour a small mound of the salt mixture into a small dish in front of the corner, and say "As this salt is placed here today, it marks the beginning of its service to this home. It will fortify, protect, and create sanctuary here. It will blow away with the wind once its protective powers are used up." Then, soak the mound of salt in the alcohol. Repeat the above steps for the remaining three corners, going to the east, then the south, and conclude to the west.
Now, enter your home. Locate every external corner of your home and place four whole peppercorns at the base of each one. Try to tuck them in as best as you can so they are unintrusive and remain mostly undisturbed. Wet each pile with your charged alcohol and ask the pepper for its protection.
Once the above steps are complete, store the remaining alcohol and periodically pour it onto the peppercorns and salt to recharge them. If you see that the dishes of salt are low, refill them with the salt mixture.
Method 2 - Miraculous Soil Protection Ritual
This protection typically requires the 'holy' dirt from Chimayo. If this is inaccessible for you, you may be able to request some to be sent to you by the church. If you prefer not to I will teach you to make your own substitute.
To make a suitable substitute first you must locate some seemingly dry or infertile land such as cracked dirt from a drought. Now, look for signs of life in the dirt. Look for a small plant that is somehow defying the odds, or miraculously continuing to thrive in such harsh environments. Once you find a spot of soil with life, collect a cup full and leave the rest for the earth. Thank it by offering it water. Water the plant and tend to it; help it succeed at life. Then pray over a handful of table salt the following prayer:
Being of the earth. In the name of the ineffable God, and by the power of the tetragrammaton, be you consecrated in the service of the most high. Imbew this salt with the powers to protect this house and everything and everyone in it from all evil. Ometeo.
Once complete, wet the salt with distilled water and mix it into the cup of dirt. Allow it to thoroughly dry before use.
Once you acquire or make holy dirt, head to the front of your home with a small dish filled with the dirt. Begin to sprinkle it along the threshold of your door and ask for protection. State that no negativity may pass the sacred soil.
Then, sprinkle the dirt around the perimeter of the front facade of your house. Do not use too much. You should not be able to physically see the dirt. Then place the dirt on top of any plants near your front door. If there are none, consider planting a chile pepper bush for protection. Rosemary is another good option, along with juniper.
Now, repeat the above steps for any walls containing an external door. If there are none place the dirt at each corner. If there is another wall, do not place it at the corners, as it is not needed.
Once completed, pour a glass of water out from the inside of each external door while standing within it. As you do this say "As I pour this water it washes away all remaining evil. It may no longer reside here."
Protecting the home is a vital step to protecting those who reside within it. These methods are my two personal go-to methods for every home I inhabit, and I hope that you find use in these methods. Be sure to execute physical safety too, as that is equally if not more important than spiritual safety. Be sure to continue to regularly cleanse your home too, as you do not want negativity to fester within the home itself.

Unironically,
I think the oath of swearing into the Circle in the movie The Craft is one of the best coven ceremonies I've ever seen.
To the tune of, "It is wiser to thrust yourself upon this blade (held to the throat of another), than to enter this circle with fear in your heart. How do you choose to enter?"
"In perfect love & perfect trust."
Considering that sharing a Circle with others makes you much more susceptible to feel their feelings. That bringing fear into a sacred space can mess with the vibe.
Is it edgy? Yes.
Have I used it as a regular part of my practice since I was 15? Also yes.
