Dick stopped next to him, watching curiously. “What are you doing?” He inquired.

Lew side eyed him, tongue still hanging out. “Eating snow.” Without another word he let gravity do the work as he flopped backwards onto the ground. It wasn’t enough to really cushion his landing, but he had a proper landing technique. It was nothing compared to throwing yourself from a plane. “Oof,” he huffed out as he hit the ground, splaying his arms out in an angel shape. Instead of flapping his limbs like one would to create a snow angel, he stared up at Dick who was still standing. “Well, come on.”

Dick carefully lowered himself to the ground an angel's length away from Lew and started making his imprint. Lew, apparently satisfied, started doing the same. Neither of them made an attempt to get up, even after they’d both stopped moving. Their arms were still splayed out, hand barely a finger's length away from each other as they watched snow fall from the sky.

eight: what happens if one of them gets sick?

I feel like Nix is usually a little bit of a baby about being sick, just like being grumpy and reluctant to do anything beyond being burrowed in blankets and trying to sleep it off. Not full on whiny, impossible to be around, but tired and grouchy about being sick and happy to be looked after. Dick keeps him well hydrated and lets him curl up on him and doze while Dick reads and pets his hair. It's very much Dick doesn't mind looking after him and does it without being asked, and Nix is happy to soak up all the tlc and take it easy until he feels better.

Dick is one of those guys who pretends he's fine until he feels like absolute shit and has a hard time submitting to people taking care of him. This is sometimes tough bc Nix likes to take care of him and Dick doesn't want to be a huge bitch to him, so there are times when he might want to be like go away >:C but then remembers he's being stupid and immature and Nix loves him so much and it's okay to let someone bring him soup and painkillers.

Nix is a patient good sport about it bc he's used to Dick being reluctant to be looked after and he knows he's really just grouchy to be feeling lousy and not mad at him.

(side note: wrote a fic about this exact situation as a pinch hit for heavy artillery's exchange last december for my wife which you can find here, although it's locked to registered users only.)

twenty five: Do they have any hobbies they share?

At first glance, not really besides basic stuff like they enjoy reading or watching a movie and both were very smart good students (or you know, Nix would've been a better student if he hadn't been capable of coasting vs. working super hard at it), but I think especially post war they definitely get some hobbies in common. Namely I think Nix gets Dick on the travel train because Dick is adventurous and curious about other places, but didn't have a lot of opportunity to explore that before the war, and then they both take care of the gardens at both their place in NJ and the house in PA. Historical!Nix apparently got very into fancy French cooking post war so Jess and I have adopted that for our post-war headcanon for BOB!Nix, so he'd start getting opinions about an herb garden and fresh vegetables and help Dick out or do stuff himself. Dick also is Nix's sous chef/prep cook/clean up crew, or will just keep him company in the kitchen and catch each other up on their days while Nix makes some fancy dinner.

But honestly in general I think they both love the other person so much that even hobbies they're not as into kind of become their hobbies anyway bc they like keeping each other company, lol.

So obviously they excel at this. I think the biggest thing is always like, just how much they're in tune to the other's emotional state and physical/emotional needs. Nix in particular is very good at finding little gifts to offer Dick to help cheer him up or look after him, and I very much think it's a thing of like post war at home he'll bring him a cup of coffee when he gets home from work or picks up a new pair of his favorite slippers when the old ones are getting ratty but Dick would insist they don't need to replace them yet.

Also Dick's just like, steady constant presence in Nix's life, which I think is a huge deal for Sad Little Rich Boy. Dick's seen him at his worst but is still here and won't abandon him, and again especially post-war it's very we're in this together so we face it together, how can I help? And Nix is still a little shocked that Dick hasn't decided to hell with this, bye, every time it happens but obviously he's not going anywhere because he loves him. c:

Oh, I would be happy to do that for you. But I’m going to put it behind a cut because what this lovely anon is referring to is my big 2021 fic project, the working title of which is The Winnix Sex Anthology, so. Just make an informed decision on this one. 

Okay! Hi, glad you’re here! I'm not sure where I got the idea for this, I think I just woke up a few months ago to discover it had eaten my brain but basically what I want to do is write a huge-ish (like 50k+) comprehensive Winnix story focused mainly on the development and various stages of their sexual relationship. But I want it to start when they meet and take into account the attitudes and perceptions they each have about sex that they bring with them from the beginning. So in no particular order, here are topics I want to touch on:

Dick’s attitude toward sex in the context of his religious beliefs and moral upbringing 

Dick’s attitude toward sex on a practical/physical level - how he reconciles that with the above (Nix def gonna walk in on him jerking off)

Dick’s sexual experience - how much (or little) would he have likely done by this point in his life? How much (or little) would he know about women’s bodies/sexual workings/etc?

Dick’s understanding of his own (homo)sexual desires; his understanding of homosexuality

By contrast, Lew - he’s married at this point, certainly has more sexual experience; what is his general attitude toward the role of sex in his life and relationships? Sex with his wife - wow, what’s THAT like?

How much does class matter? Does it go along with drinking; i.e., is sex seen as something that it’s fine for the upper classes to approach with more indulgence and less rigidity?

Not that I'm going to get too deep into his prep school days (no interest in touching underage) but vaguely - what happened there? How did it shape his understanding of his sexual and romantic urges as he transitioned into adulthood? What was the effect of being in homosocial environments in his formative years?

Would his awareness and understanding of himself as not “normal”, to use the period term, be any more developed than Dick’s, just because he’s had more experience? Or is he in many ways just as green?

Do they recognize this in each other? Do they try to hide it from each other? Or is Nix pretty open about his attraction from the get-go? How does Dick respond to that? 

How does he respond to FALLING IN LOVE for the first time, OMG?!

And when they start having sex.... 

A whole thing about it being Dick’s first time, of having his very first sex at age 24 with Lewis Nixon III, and while we’re on the topic - Touching another guy’s cock for the first time. Dick’s first blowjob. Dick giving his first blowjob. 

Nix losing his anal virginity (I feel like I just made that term up and it’s pretty stupid, I’ll admit, but the idea of Lew having some firsts of his own is pretty compelling, regardless) and how awkward and nervous they’d both be about that. 

Dick becoming enraptured and maybe a little obsessed with certain parts of Lew’s body, because his sexual awakening is coinciding with falling in love and it all goes right to his head. I’ve got strong opinions about the first chapter being called “The First Time” and the last one “The Last Time”, and putting a few firsts/lasts in each... also thinking about something crazy and cerebral like a cosmic dream baby they made (”making love”) who sort of watches over them and waits for them on the other side of the veil. It’s all very amorphous right now. But I’ve got notes! I’ve got exactly three notes. Here they are:

As gentle as his hands folded in prayer. (no idea where I’m going with this, I just love the language/image of it.) 

Dick had given him his flower but it was something altogether brighter. Harder. Like a communion wafer, or a silver dollar on his tongue, and he’d swallowed it and now a part of Dick was a part of him too. 

Life was something lived above the surface, its sounds muffled by the water. They had discovered that they could breathe under water.

I’ve been having a lot of conversations about Winnix as dads. Do you have any headcannons or fics of them with kids? I’d love to hear your thoughts ❤️

!!  i do, i do!!  winnix are dads anyways, thank you for giving me an opportunity to indulge my great interest.   my headcanons about nix’s kid will probably be of interest to you, and are 100% relevant to this!!

so, nix has a kid.  she’s the only good thing to come out of his marriage to his first wife   ---   funny, since she was an absolute accident, and neither parent was exactly thrilled when she was born.   nix didn’t think he was ready to be a dad, and kathy had little interest in being a mom...  so for most of her childhood, little madeline was left to the nannies to raise.

nix doesn’t actually get to know his kid until after the war ends.   she doesn’t come around much.  when she does, the entire nixon family dotes on her.   his parents are thrilled to be grandparents...  so nix leaves the handling of maddie up to them on her rare visits, lingering awkwardly in the background.  he doesn’t know how to interact with his own kid.

honestly, any kid nix has is going to have a lot of him in them.   maddie’s nixon genes are strong  ---  she’s got her father’s dark hair, dark eyes, sharp wit, and quiet intensity.  

lewis nixon does not know what to do with this little girl.

“you’re afraid of her,” dick remarks bluntly to him one day.  dick sees everything that goes on in his father’s company, in the nixon family, and in nix’s mess of a life.  for the first time, nix kind of regrets buying him a ticket to new jersey.

“i’m not afraid of my own daughter!”

he proves it by getting her gifts.  his own father’s solution to any parenting problem was to throw money at it — enough money that it would certainly go away.  nix doesn’t want his daughter gone, he just wants her… satisfied. comfortable. fond of him, if he can ask for that much.

he doesn’t just buy her whatever she wants.  he buys her things a little girl doesn’t rationally need.  for maddie’s seventh birthday, she gets a rolls royce.

dick is  a g h a s t .

the winters family’s parenting style couldn’t be more different from the nixons if they tried.   austere and modest, dick’s parents treated him with respect from an early age, but also gave him a great deal of responsibility.  as a child, he had a heavy load of chores; anything he wanted, he had to earn.  when he wanted new things, he bought them with his own money…  but those were more new shoes and books, maybe splurging on a camera or an ice cream cone, never a car.   when the milk bottles were empty, little dick got new bowling pins.  when the sheep were shaved, his mother would sometimes make him a new stuffed animal.  that was the extent of spoiling him.

frankly, dick wants to raise his own children the same way.

nix thinks he’s a madman.

that said, dick is also a great buffer.   where nix goes, dick tends to follow; maddie gets used to her father’s shadow.  dick doesn’t think he’s particularly good with kids, but for some reason, maddie likes him.  more than her father.  dick didn’t ask for this at all...  but nix is thrilled.

“if she likes you, we’re set!  just  ---  talk me up a bit, you know?  tell her about her old dad.  give her a good impression.  get to know her, find out what she wants, and i’ll get it for her!”

dick is skeptical, but loyal.  he takes on the task of spending more time with maddie.

however much like her father she is, the little girl also carries a strong vein of melancholy.  it doesn’t take dick long to recognize it as loneliness.

like any job, dick commits to it with his absolute all.   he takes maddie to the park, to the beach, out flying kites and racing the wind.  all maddie wants is someone to listen to her chatter, so dick does.   he’s got a peculiar way of dealing with children  ---  he doesn’t spoil them, and certainly doesn’t baby them.   he’s very respectful and encouraging, but sort of treats them like miniature adults; if they’re capable of acting, they’re capable of thinking those actions through and understanding the consequences, good or bad.   maddie loves this approach  ---  dick takes her seriously, and she adores him for it.

about two weeks into dick’s assigned babysitting detail, nix pulls him aside, absolutely stricken.      “you’re Dadding my kid,” he says.

dick doesn’t mean to adopt nix’s kid. that is absolutely, by no means what he wants, and boy is it a shock when he realizes.

by then, he’s in too deep. maddie has already started calling him “uncle dick”, and runs up every time she sees him with a broad grin on her face.  she reports her daily activities back to him diligently, beams under the modest praise he gives her, and is always ready for a new adventure.  “i think we should go to the park today,”  she’ll declare, settling into the passenger’s seat besides dick.  or, “we should go to the zoo.” “lets go the the beach and feed the seagulls.”

somehow, dick has become Interim Dad.

nix is devastated.   he feels like he’s been replaced  ---  worse, that he let it happen.   until he saw his kid being Dadded by someone else, he didn’t realize how much he wants a relationship with his daughter.  he really, really does.

“you have to listen to her,”    dick tells him.    “she likes to argue  ---  not to be bullheaded, but just for the sake of it.   it’s how her brain works.   she doesn’t like being left alone.  when she asks questions, she expects a serious answer.  she doesn’t like dolls.”

there’s a brand new, $1000 dollhouse sitting in the back of nix’s renault.  he feels faint.

charitably, dick invites him to the park the next day.

maddie doesn’t quite know why her father is with them  ---   he always seems very busy doing absolutely nothing  ---   but she adjusts quickly.   nix has been to this exact park drunk on multiple occasions, so he does too.

it’s a sight to see  ---   nix and his daughter, swinging side by side, seeing who can go the highest.   when nix gets a cramp in his leg, maddie laughs so hard she nearly tumbles off the swing.   standing by, dick grins.

they end up double-teaming as dads for the rest of maddie’s childhood.   it gets easier when they move away from nix’s family, and nix gets his own life in order.   maddie gets her own bedroom at their house whenever they come to visit; nix fills it with books on animals and egyptian curses, chess boards and astronomy sets.   she rides horses with dick all afternoon, and comes home to help nix put together dinner.   she shows her father how to braid hair, and “uncle dick” learns ballet lifts while she’s practicing for her upcoming recital.    though dick is the stern parent, he’s weak to maddie’s puppy dog eyes, because her father has the exact same pair.

they never tell her outright, but by the time she’s old enough, maddie’s figured out what’s going on between them.   she never questions it.  a part of her knew all along, and dick’s been her family long before he and her father held hands at the dinner table.

they haven’t raised a child together, not exactly...   but when they look at the young woman their daughter has become, dick and nix couldn’t be prouder of her.

Nikolai Luzhin/Kirill from Eastern Promises. Probably my most obscure fandom, as my tastes are usually quite mainstream, but I love my murderous, horrible, criminal babies with all my heart.

Hamilton (I ship Whamilton like it’s nobody’s business, and it’s one of my few fandoms where I don’t multiship much. Also I SAW IT LIVE.)

Tolkien (as you might imagine from my name, the Silmarillion is my jam, although I also love LotR and I am in love with Aragorn. Ecthelion/Glorfindel is The OTP of my life, and in the remote case that a fellow shipper is reading, PLEASE come say hi, I desperately need shipping pals)

Greek mythology - I didn’t want to like The Song of Achilles because it has a very similar concept to a fic I started writing age 14 and never completed, and I didn’t like it. I fucking loved it. I also had a phase of shipping Apollo/Dionysus real hard for some reason.

Early Modern theatre - and YES, I watched TNT’s Will and liked it, no shame, and I also saw the stage version of Shakespeare in Love which was AMAZING and also hella gayer than the film. I ship Shakespeare and Marlowe with the force of a thousand burning suns and if you ship them too you are morally obligated to come talk to me, and also if you read the Promethean Series/Stratford Man by Elizabeth Bear because OH MAN

Currently screaming in pain as I wait for the next instalment of the Gentlemen Bastards series. Why do I love that little shit Lamora so much, why? And Jean. Jean is The Best.

Arthur/Lancelot from the 2004 King Arthur Movie. I kinda had a few months of obsession and now I have a book on arthurian mythology and a trip planned to Tintagel castle and lots of tears for these two dorks, but only in this very specific film? Honestly, self.

Kingsman. KINGSMAN. Harry/Eggsy. Obviously. LANCELOT STAN. She deserved better. To give you an idea of how much I like it: when it first appeared on Netflix, my housemates thought it was a series, because I could not stop watching it and they though I was marathoning it.

Used to be in the MCU (&some comics) fandom (now I am happy to see it around my dash, but I have lost the plot, mostly), where I multiship even more than usual. As this tweet says, I’m a Tony stan first and a human being second.

So I’m making this anonymous only because I don’t want to feel I’m looking for too much attention, but my dog died today completely unexpectedly and I feel like shit 😰 could I pretty please request something with Easy and dogs. If this is not your forte I totally understand ☺️

Oh god, darling, I’m so sorry. Losing a pet is a pain unlike any other, almost like losing a part of yourself...  as much as you’re hurting right now, just remember your dog always knew they were loved, and loved you back just as much. You gave your pup a great life, and wherever they are now, they still love you.

Sometimes people seek out a new pet; sometimes, they have pet-parenthood thrust upon them.

In Joe Liebgott’s case, it happens literally. Someone leaves a wine box on the floor of his cab; he notices a few minutes after he drops the guy off, and he’s just doubling back to try and find him when the box starts squeaking.

Joe almost crashes the car.

As if turns out, the box’s precious cargo isn’t liquor, but...  puppies. An absurd amount of puppies. Mind you, Joe’s never owned a dog in his life, so more than two puppies seems like an absurd amount to him, and there’s gotta be, like...  six in here. Six squirming balls of fur, can’t be more than a few weeks old. Their eyes are hardly open yet. They’re climbing over each other to escape the box as soon as Joe opens it...  but everything they can’t say, the sharpie scribbled on the inside of the cardboard speaks for itself.

FREE PUPPIES, DO NOT RETURN

Which...  shit. Shit. Joe races through all the possibilities in his mind. The guy didn’t give his name, and paid in cash. He dropped him off at the airport. He could be damn anywhere right now!

And god help him if Joe has the first clue what to do with literal infant dogs.

Logic tells him, “go to the animal hospital now,” but he’s never been there in his life  ---  and aren’t those places overcrowded anyway? They’re in the middle of Santa Monica, there’ve got to be multiple animal shelters around, but god help him if he knows where any are...

Joe goes home. He panics, okay?

He has to sneak past the doorman, through the lobby, and into the elevator with a very conspicuous wine box that keeps making noises. The old lady from the fourth floor glares at him the whole ride up, and Joe can only nod his head at her while a tiny head pokes out a hole in the cardboard.

Web isn’t home, for once, because he has a lunch date with his editor; Joe almost wishes he was, because having someone else to bounce off of in this situation would be a great thing. Left to his own devices, however, he does the only thing he can think of; pulls the spare comforter out of the closet, lays it down in the empty bathtub, and dumps the pups in. After some consideration, he adds one of Web’s shark plushies, because the pups are tiny and probably missing their mother.

Their mother...  shit, they need their mom, don’t they? Pups that small can’t be without their mom, he knows he saw that on Animal Planet somewhere...

And, because Joe’s got the panic instincts of a twelve year old boy, he calls the one person who definitely knows what to do with a baby: his mom.

Mama Liebgott makes it to the apartment in twenty minutes. Ten minutes later, she’s setting up a heating pad in the puppies’ nest, while Joe scours the internet for how to care for newborn puppies. Mama calls in the troops  ---  Joe’s sisters are on their way. 

They send Joe out of the apartment with a list; when he comes back, his arms are weighed down with shopping bags, filled with formula, eyedroppers, puppy toys, and anything else little dogs could possibly need. Joe Liebgott is never one to half-ass shenanigans; he goes all-out.

Webster comes home to...  chaos.

Their bathroom has been turned into an improvised NICU, their apartment’s been sanitized and baby-proofed to high-hell, Joe’s mother and sisters are lounging around the living room with tiny bundles of something in their arms...

And in the middle of the chaos, Joe’s standing there, a blanket-wrapped bundle in his arms, bouncing it and cooing softly.

“Yeah, you’re a tough one, arencha, little buddy? Yeah...  I see it in ya. You’re a fighter. We’re gonna take good care of you, I promise...”

He has no clue what the hell is going on, but Webster melts. To the floor. Literally, his legs get a little weak.

“Uh  ---  Lieb? You wanna explain what on earth’s h---  is that a dog?”

Joe just grins. He’s never been an animal person in his life, but now he looks like he’s in heaven. “Dogs,” he declares. “We’ve got dogs, Web.”’

Webster has entered the Twilight Zone.

When they take them to the vet (Webster’s idea, because he actually has common sense), the puppies are given a clean bill of health, but as they’re definitely too young to be separated from their mother, there’s a laundry list of things that must be done to take care of them. The vet offers to take the puppies off their hands, and Webster has a brief moment of overwhelming relief, before Joe answers, “Thank you, but we got this.”

Webster drops his coffee all over the exam room floor. “We?” He demands, too shocked to form a cohesive sentence. “We?”

Joe’s eyes flash. “Fine, Web. You don’t gotta be involved, I’ll take care of ‘em myself. Found ‘em in my car, after all.”

“I live with you, asshole!”

And that’s how Webster and Liebgott become Dog Moms.

Of course Web’s going to help. He’s not a monster. He’s actually a pretty decent person, when push comes to shove...  and, once the Liebgott Crisis Team have all returned to their respective homes, he can’t bear to leave Joe to look after the babies by himself.

The worst part is, he’s not even a dog person. Suddenly, he and Joe are being kept up at all hours by a league of puppies. They’re so young that they can’t eat solid food yet, so it’s a round-the-clock task to keep them fed and looked after. 

Of course, Joe takes to the task like a diligent soldier, following every direction the vet gave them to a ‘t’. He takes a week off work, devoting himself 24/7 to the puppies’ care. It’s a lot on him. By the end of the fourth day, he’s been run ragged, dark shadows under his eyes and exhaustion knitting his brow. Web makes him some tea, settles him down on the couch, and massages his shoulders until Joe falls asleep. Then he takes on the task of feeding all six puppies by himself.

He gets peed on. Thrice.

It’s still worth it. After a few weeks, the puppies don’t need to be fed so frequently...  and they’re growing enough that there’s no more containing them in the bathtub. Joe and Web set up a puppy playpen that ends up taking up most of their living room, and set the kids loose. 

By now, the pups are old enough to wreak havoc, and starting to develop their own personalities. Shelley and Rocko have a talent for getting into everything, Byron is a biter, Goblin has no coordination and keeps tripping over his oversized feet, Fiona cries when either of them leave her alone, and Greg...  Greg is an escape artist. (Bonus points for guessing who named who. They got three pups each.)

Their house becomes a hub of curious friends and relatives. Tab and Shifty are over nearly every day to play with the pups; Joe’s youngest sister Amy keeps coming over too, and Tab won’t stop hitting on her; they wake up one morning to find Luz passed out in the Puppy Pit, tiny dogs clambering all over him, and no one knows how the hell he got in their house. Suddenly Joe and Web are the most popular guys in town.

It’s...  weird. Webster’s never been popular before. He’s not sure he likes it.

Weeks turn into months, and at some point, the pups are big enough to clamber around the apartment unaided. The vet estimates they’re twelve weeks old now, and keeping them inside is becoming a big challenge. Their building doesn’t allow dogs, for one, and they have to keep sneaking them past the concierge; potty training is becoming a living nightmare; and frankly, the dogs are getting too big to be cooped up inside all the time. Six newborn puppies is one thing, but six growing dogs...  different story.

They need to get rid of the dogs.

Thankfully, they’ve got no shortage of volunteers. Joe’s mom takes Goblin “for protection”, even if Goblin’s the clumsiest little monster that’s ever walked the face of the earth. Luz and Rocko have bonded, so he takes him home. Tab would probably adopt them all if he could, but since he can’t (Trigger is a handful already) Shifty lovingly takes on Shelley. oddly enough, Speirs has formed a special attachment to Fiona, cradling her like a baby and doting on her ever chance he gets, so he gets her. Rocko is a little evil, but he’s cute, and Nixon is a sucker for a cute face, so he gets the chaos demon.

That leaves them with Byron. Freaking Byron.

“Figures we’d get left with the one dog with the worst goddamn name  ---”

Joe has a soft spot for Byron. They both like to bite things, growl when they’re angry, and pass out in strange places, so it’s a great fit.

Letting a dog into their lives wasn’t something either of them planned on; but sometimes fate intervenes, and you never know when it will be for the better.

Cuddled up on the couch, with Joe dozing against his shoulder and Byron a heavy weight between them both, Web finds that he doesn’t regret a thing.
