Babe (1995) is such a fantastic film from a family movie perspective, a xenofiction perspective, just a film perspective, and it kills me that I can't find any video essays on it

the fact is that george miller says a lot of the same things about gender, masculinity, and violence in babe (1995) as he does in mad max: fury road (2015) but they are simply packaged for very different audiences. in this essay, i will—

watching Babe (1995) like lol i can't believe this was directed by the Mad Max guy
then Babe 2: Pig in the City (1998) ooooohhhh ok i see it now
*edit I was mistaken. George Miller did not direct the first Babe movie. He co-wrote it. He did direct Babe 2: Pig in the City...and it shows.

Seven Comfort Films
tagged by @fulcrum843 and @alderaanakin
Moulin Rouge! - I first watched this movie when I was like 10 years old and then in middle school I literally watched it every single day of the week. Really got me into my obsession with Ewan McGregor...also dyed my hair red because of Satine I obsoletely adore her.
The Prince of Egypt - I watched this is Bible School the very first time and I recall having a VHS tape of it, but everything about it I love. It makes me miss 2D animation because the animated movies nowadays haven't done it for me especially the parting of the Red Sea. This movie also feeds into Ancient Egyptian obsession.
Suspiria (2018) - to me this movie should've gotten more accolades and everything because even though its a remake it still feels original; especially, compared to the Dario Argento '77 version. Again, it brings great comfort even with the horror elements and the soundtrack compares very well to the OG.
Black Beauty (1994) - I love horses and stories about horses. This movie hits all the correct spots for a good horse movie to be enjoyable. The story is so compelling plus using the legit horses instead of CGI monstrosities as stand-ins help a lot. I love a good tragic story with a happy ending then the humans are quite in the background but they serve the story.
Velvet Goldmine - anther Ewan McGregor classic but I watch this every Christmas Day since I got the DVD. It's weird about glam rock and lots of male and female nudity, but I wouldn't want anything less from it.
Bottle Shock - a good story about a Californian vineyard's wine that takes place in France and they end up winning the competition. Then also long-haired hippy Chris Pine with your typical snobby British Snob played by Alan Rickman. My favorite way to watch this is with a bottle of chardonnay and snacks.
Babe (1995) - final one! I love this one so much with all the drama behind the pig and the farmer. Him stubbornly accepting poor Babe then I also like of they don't hold back on how things are in the farming industry especially right at the beginning.
I have a lot of favorite films these are just generally my favorite to watch whenever I can and that I know are readily available. I've probably close to over 100 DVD's and have seen a lot more movies that I do find comforting.

Last Month, I re-watched Babe because I haven't really seen it in such a long time (I dunno nor remember how old was I when I first saw it). Granted, I did see a sequel of it and I didn't think that the film's sequel wasn't that bad. Though the Movie itself was based on a Book called "The Sheep Dog" by Dick K. Smith.
And you wanna know something else? This story itself really reminded Me a lot of Charlotte's Web with another spin about a special pig. And you wanna know what itself? Like the other Pig Story that I've mentioned, I like how it does tell a story about a Piglet who is new the farm and finds true meaning in himself with such believe of heart that he's truly a sheep-pig and a true helpful friend while being raised by his own Foster Dog Family.
Though outside of Babe and Charlotte's Web, I've seen other Farm literature like George Orwell's "Animal Farm".

Today is 🖖🏻🚀First Contact Day🚀🖖🏻(RESISTANCE IS FUTILE, & also with you) as you may know, and in a fun coincidence I saw that You Are Good released a podcast episode today about another heartwarming, mid-90’s film starring ✨James Cromwell✨, Babe (1995) - that logically connected these two movies immediately in my brain, which culminated in me making a fast and loose edit that I tweeted out earlier: a mashup of the Star Trek: First Contact (1996) Phoenix launch sequence, & song “If I Had Words” by ✨James Cromwell✨, that he sings during a poignant scene from the children’s classic about a pig.
But, Dear Reader, I was not ready for how hard the combination hits you right in the 😭FEELS😭. This song fits perfectly with the hopeful beauty and overall meaning of Zefram Cochrane’s warp flight and Humanity’s subsequent first contact with the Vulcans- so obviously I had to make a better edit (now with 100% less bottle-fed pig suckling sounds! thanks official soundtrack ), like going back in time to save the world, here’s my second chance. That’ll do, Borg. That’ll do.

Babe (1995) is a G-Rated talking animal family movie that I hadn’t watched since I was single-digits, but I was feeling anxious last night and it’s free on YouTube so I was like fuck it, it’s probably pretty bad now that I’m an adult but at least it’ll be chill and low-stakes. WRONG on BOTH counts, it’s way better than I remember, probably shouldn’t have been G-rated for how much it dwells on death, has a surprising subtlety that a lot of movies made for grown adults in the 2020’s lack, and the soundtrack is so pretty. Surprisingly funny, some of the jokes went WAY over my head as a small child. Had no idea there were Jim Henson animatronics involved. Had me weeping like a baby at James Cromwell singing a lullaby and dancing a funny little jig for a sick piglet to cheer him up.
