Kunikida and Katai knew each other since they were twelve. Katai joined the Agency for Kunikida. He left after the Azure King died and before the Azure Messenger case. He even left the fucking ADA dorms for that crappy dilapidated house. WHAT was it that happened between them for him to leave??????

KUNIKIDA ISN’T THE AZURE KING, RIGHT?? RIGHT!?!?
I let it slide the first time I watched the series, but I subconsciously expected to get some sort of explanation for why the two characters looked so alike, but an explanation never came.
It’s not coincidental. Despite having his face covered, Bones made sure we saw the Azure King’s hair and eye color, and they match Kunikida’s EXACTLY. Even the shape of the eyes are the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And like, the whole episode, they kept talking about how the Azure King “lived by his ideals,” saying it numerous times. They talked about him the same way the ADA talks about Kunikida. We also have the similarities over his education and connections in government organizations.
Even down to the fact that Kunikida is drawn to and attracted to Sasaki, who was the Azure King’s lover. Down to the fact that she tells Kunikida, at gunpoint, “you resemble him.”
The Azure King and Kunikida even share the same Japanese voice actor. The irl Nobuko Sasaki was married to the irl Doppo Kunikida, but they divorced early into their marriage.
Was Kunikida the Azure King!?! I told myself he wasn’t, the first time I saw it, because I expected more information later, but like I said, we never got any.
I know I’m not the first person to theorize about this, but I just wish we knew more. The Azure King could just be an elaborate allegory for what Kunikida could have been, if he went down that path. But that’s…such an excessively detailed allegory. Like why go that hard if it’s just a parallel?

me when the two characters from bsd who are obsessed with their ideals to an extreme level, who have blond hair and who have practically identical eyes and eyebrows and extremely vague backstories (only known difference is that one of them was japans most destructive terrorist while the other one works at the agency known for employing assassins and mass murderers)

kinda wild to me that one of the most compelling aspects of both Chuuya and Kunikida's characters to me, that I never really see talked about, is how they're heavily set on a doomed crash course towards complete and utter destruction, and how I am so, so worried for them both.....
#bungou stray dogs#been thinking a lot about chuuya lately (shocking for me i know (said with no sarcasm truly lmao it is rare for me))#cause of the 15 manga and also playing the fucking jeht quest in genshin impact ugh (where's the one dual genshin bsd fan who Understands)#but like this pressure has been building up for chuuya for so long due to being used and manipulated by all these people#first the sheep then mori then verlaine then still mori now#he was groomed since childhood just like dazai#but unlike dazai he didn't have an oda to help him get out of the mafia........ he's still stuck there#and his personality is different from dazai's. dazai was more self-aware imo (but still a groomed emotionally abused kid don't get me wrong#but chuuya's whole thing is needing to belong and wanting a leader to be loyal to but ending up in positions of leadership himself#which makes him feel pressured but he accepts and stifles any negative feelings just because he wants to belong#and all this crushed him with the events in the light novels and yeah he went through character growth but he's...... Still In The Mafia...#and that fucking scene asagiri added to the cannibalism stage play i don't think hardly anyone even knows about bc IT'S NOT DISCUSSED ANYMO#where mori emotionally manipulates him with the flags!!! and it deeply hurts him!!! and he presumably deals with that shit all the time!!!#it is WORRISOME. it WORRIES ME okay.#chuuya doesn't have anyone who can save him from the mafia (dazai is in no position to okay; it's all he can do just to try to save himself#and it's so so scary. it spells awful things for him.#didn't asagiri say he'd have a rough path or something??? and he added that fucking scene in the play!!! it haunts me!!#i fully expected this shit to hit a turning point in the meursault arc but we can't have nice things i guess#and as for kunikida a;lskdfl (took me this long to get to him oop) literally the ending of Entrance Exam (the novel) is just#One Big Foreshadowing for Kunikida's downfall#he's compared to the azure king for a reason. Sasaki saw the azure king in him for a reason. it's fucking worrying!!!!!#there hasn't really been anything like that since in the manga (just like for chuuya lol ugh) but he's TERRIBLE at coping with his trauma#and it only gets more apparent once shit hit the fan in the doa/hunting dogs/meursault arc#it's not good!!! i'm worried for kunikida too!!!!#even if the manga isn't focusing on this these worries are always in the back of my mind man#both kunikida and chuuya are doomed to hit some kind of breaking point eventually and i await those moments with dread yet anticipation#i want dazai to be able to save kunikida from the despair being too good a person brings the way he couldn't save oda#and chuuya.... if we get a scene with him & mori mirroring the one in dark era where dazai finds out that mori orchestrated the kids' death#oh man i think i'll fucking die (give it to me i need to cry)

guys, i just had the greatest fyokuni idea
second gen azure king kunikida who was recruited into doa by fyodor bc he found him interesting and pretty. kunikida requested for him to be a part of his plan. fyodor (whos super down bad for him) allowed him and told him to infiltrate ada to watch them (bc he somehow knows that atsushi, the key to the book, will join in the future)
traitor kunikida where he convinced himself that he was an idealistic and 'on the good side' kinda person so ranpo couldnt figure him out. ranpo had suspicions but he shrugged it off because kunikida proved himself to be the one who has the most uhh morally white perspective (i forgot what it's called) (i mean he is but he only ever wants to protect those people who are worthy of his protection)
and then ch 117 happens, but kunikida didnt actually disintegrate. it was an illusion.
sometime later after they 'defeated' fyodor, a funeral was held for all the people that died. one of those was kunikida's.
but unbeknownst to all of them, fyodor was watching from a nearby rooftop.
"youre dead?"
beside him was kunikida doppo, who replied: "a shame that my part in all these is done, really."
"of course it is, darling. you've done enough. i wouldn't want you hurt anymore."
"hm, then i'll resume with the azure king business. do you think nikolai would help me?"
"of course he will, he likes you more than me. that itself is surprising because he always expressed his 'admiration' towards me."
"ha, you call that admiration? then what do you call what you have towards me?" kunikida asked even though he knows the answer
"love, darling. i love you."
kunikida smirked, stood up and tilted fyodor's chin (with his finger) to make him look up at him.
"i love you too, dear."
and they kissed.

It's 12 a.m., and it's my mom's birthday, yet all I can think about is how I want and need to learn more about Kunikida
The current theory that I keep seeing is that he's the Azure King, which doesn't line up with his ideals, yet when we're shown that glimpse, they look similar.
We know Kunikida was a math teacher. He's 22, so I guess not much else can really happen. But something must've.
How old was he when he tought math?
How old was he when he joined the ADA?
How old was he when he fought the Azure King? (I think this one's known but I'm too lazy to do the math)
What is Kunikidas past?
I'm starving for info
(Also, I don't think Kunikida could be the Azure King because Kunikida tried to figure out who he was, but at the same time, they were never in the same room)
(Maybe I semi belive it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

I am actually frothing at the mouth rn where the fuck is the interview where Asagiri implies that the Azure King case never occured and thus Kunikida never accidentally caused the deaths of five people and so Rokuzou never lost his father and so Kunikida never met Sasaki OR Rokuzou. Where is it. What the fuck yall. Kunikida wears a blue tie in beast because he never associates blue with death. And he never meets Dazai so there’s nobody to hammer it into his head on how his ideals aren’t trustworthy. And how this implies that Dazai somehow offed the Azure King and Apostole.

Lately, I've seen a lot of posts about Kuni being the Azure King. But something about this theory didn't sit right with me so I made some research online. Just so you know, I didn't read the novel, but I've read a lot of Tumblr posts about it.
So, first of all, let's see why people think our beloved Kuni is the Azure King.
Same Japanese va, Yoshimasa Hosoya
Both of them are idealists.
Same hair color (anime only)
Kuni was a teacher and it's known that the Azure King attended some elite education institution (said in the light novel)
And probably other reasons, but this are the ones I met.
I personally think these are ways to make Kunikida and The Azure King something like a parallel. Especially the thing with the same voice actor must be it.
In Beast, he also wears blue (according to Harukawa in an interview) because he's not traumatized by the Azure King incident. So he can't be the Azure King (In Beast, Odasaku is the one that caught him)
Then who is the Azure King?
My theory is that he's Takeo Arishima. He fits the high-quality education thing and he also had some ideals. But what truly makes me suspect him as the Azure King is the fact that one of his most well-known books A Certain Woman has the main character, Yōko Satsuki, based on Sasaki Nobuko.
In the anime/light novel, she is The Azure King's lover. But in the real life, she was Kunikida's ex-wife.
Takeo Arishima also committed suicide, like The Azure King did. Well, he didn't explode himself, but you get the idea.
But then we have another problem. This Takeo is a writer. Then the character must have an ability, right? Well, it's obviously based on A Certain Woman. But what does it do? That I don't know and can only speculate. But after reading the summary of the book, I think his ability is related to the fact that he wanted to get rid of the criminals (Light Yagami kinnie moment) like how Yōko wanted to get rid of people's expectations of her. So maybe his ability tells him who committed the worst crimes so he can get rid of 'em.

I think it was implied in the Light Novel "Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam", which was basically just the Azure Messager Arc without Atsushi in it, since it was two years before Atsushi joined, that Sasaki and the Azure King did know each other, without his face being wrapped up.
So that could mean two things: one, Kunikida got plastic surgery, or two, Sasaki knew exactly who he was, just as he knew who she was, but neither of them knew what to do or if they should rat the other out because they were in love at some point. In the novel, before Sasaki dies, her last words were "I... love..." to Kunikida, who had her in his arms after she was shot- she didn't die instantly.
Personally, I think Kunikida *is* the Azure King, and that he survived his "suicide bombing" because the bombing was caused using The Matchless Poet, his Ability. Or he's just... really good at not dying to bombs, as proven when he fought against Tecchou. The reason he stopped, the reason he looked after Rokuzō, was because innocent detectives died, which went against his Ideals of innocents being killed.
What are your thoughts?
I think that the light novel makes it a TINY bit more obvious that Kunikida isn’t the Azure King, but I don’t think it completely rules out the possibility.
In the light novel, the Azure King was said to have graduated from an elite educational institution, but without clarifying if it was a university or a high school. The novel then tells us the Azure King studied abroad at a university for an unspecified period of time (which could have been as short as a single semester—or half-semester—as far as traditional study abroad programs go).
The Azure King then worked for the government in some way for an—again, unspecified—period of time (meaning his tenure in any organization could have been brief enough to fall in line with Kunikida’s age bracket) before he began his bombings on government facilities.
Kunikida was a college dropout, as most of us already know. He would have been 20 years old during Dazai’s entrance exam. He worked part time as a math teacher, which gave him the freedom to work for the ADA simultaneously, but again, we don’t know when he started teaching, nor for how long he held the job.
As unlikely as it is, he legitimately COULD have done all of those same things within the 2 years of graduating high school and establishing himself as a member of the Armed Detective Agency by the time he first meets Dazai at age 20.
Now, like I said, the light novel does make that possibility less likely, but not impossible. Do I think, truly, that Kunikida is the Azure King? The largest part of me says no.
But then Bones had to animate the Azure King the way they did, and cast the same voice actor as Kunikida, and pull all of these parallels in front of our faces in a way we’re forced to acknowledge. It’s odd, the level of dedication the production team went into these parallels.
I also think, during the conversation with Sasaki and Dazai in the cafe, that Kunikida’s behavior was hella suspicious. He actually made me MORE suspicious by how he reacted to the theory that the Azure King was still alive, and could be pulling the strings in the present day.
These are just some of the things I think about. As a story, it’s delightful for me to have the possibility introduced to us. A part of me loves not knowing, really, because that makes it more interesting. The other part of me demands more information, and goddamn Bones, they only made the drama juicier by not giving us a clear answer.

kunikida and the azure king ; is he the king? *ೃ༄
This blog will contain spoilers to the specific light novel  “Bungo Stray Dogs: Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam.” If you would not like spoilers, do not read more.
Tumblr media
1. WHO IS THE AZURE KING?
The azure king is a terrorist, who is introduced in episode seven “Love for the Disease Called Ideals” and the light novel “Bungo Stray Dogs: Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam.” He is someone motivated by ideals and was described as “ambitious.” When cornered by the police, he sent off a bomb, killing himself.
2. HOW DOES HE CONNECT TO KUNIKIDA?
The azure king and Kunikida have numerous similarities which can be seen throughout the light novel and throughout episode seven. For starters, dare I say the most obvious one, their appearance. Kunikida and the azure king look alike.  Whilst the azure kings face is primarily obscured with an azure-colored banner, blonde hair can be seen sticking out, as well as his eyes, but the color can be easily confused due to the screen-like texture. Their shape is also noteworthy as well as their expressions.
Tumblr media
Another notable resemblance between the two is they share the same Japanese VA (voice actor) which is Yoshimasa Hosoya. The two of them are both idealists, along with educational background being mentioned (as to which I find quite odd, I’ll explain why.) Speaking about Bungou Stray Dogs, the characters are based on authors, and some have severe similarities to the book they were inspired of or- in general. Kunikida Doppo; the author, was born in 1871, his first wife was Nobuko Sasaki, the azure king’s wife in the anime. Nobuko Sasaki divorced him after about 5 months of being married while pregnant due to financial struggles.
3. WHO IS NOBUKO SASAKI IN THE ANIME?
Tumblr media
Nobuko Sasaki was introduced in the light novel and episode six through seven and makes an appearance in a flashback in episode ten. Nobuko Sasaki had appeared to be a well-mannered polite and patient woman but had been the completely opposite. She is incredibly manipulative when together with the azure king and to other people generally. Behind the scenes, she actually helped the azure king with his bombs and many plans due to the fact she has no ideals so completely committed herself to his own, trying to find a reason, or will, to live. When he dies from the bomb she practically loses her will to live, and in return, directs her grief and unsettled anger towards the armed detective agency because they played part in his death. In the end, she doesn’t feel accomplished at all or satisfied with trying to damage the armed detective agency's reputation. She is the main focus along with Kunikida in the “Azure Apostle Arc.” Kunikida and Dazai go to an abandoned hospital where she is seemingly drowning, along with four other people in the building at the time due to a kidnapping, she was the only one saved. Later, she goes to the abandoned hospital after Dazai calls her over ; speculating she was the azure kings significant other. When she gets there she shoots  Rokuzō Taguchi, someone who’s father died to the azure king in front of Kunikida and Dazai. She lowered her gun because she knew Dazai couldn’t shoot her but Dazai “drops” his gun and Rokuzō picks it up while he bleeds out and shoots Sasaki to revenge his father.  She was later revealed as the “Azure Messenger” the one who sent real threats to Kunikida and Dazai, just as Dazai had suspected.
Tumblr media
Kunikida then goes on to yell and argue with Dazai because he doesn’t agree with what comes down to; Dazai’s sense of humanity in a way, Kunikida doesn’t agree with dropping the gun as he deems it wasn’t necessary and a life or possibly both could have been saved. The point isnt their contrast on their perspectives of lives and ideals though, so i’ll leave it there.
4. KUNIKIDA AND THE AZURE KING’S IDEALS.
Kunikida and the azure king both have what they consider extremely important ideals. Both of their ideas, ultimately, wish to protect innocent people by whatever they can do. That’s what it comes down to. The execution of those ideals however is very conflicting to the other. Kunikida attempts to stop violence whilst the azure king creates violence and destruction because the people he was dealing with were criminals. The azure king essentially punished detectives and government members for failing to capture criminals which isn’t necessarily their fault or something they could control, at least I hope not.
5. KUNIKIDA AND THE AZURE KING’S VIEWS.
I believe not only with the contrast of their ideals their views on life and humanity are very conflicting as well. The azure king tries to make the world a “better place” by what he deems correct, which is, well, committing crimes against criminals. (Ironic, isn’t it.) In contrast, Kunikida strives to heal the world and make it a better place just like the rest of the armed detective agency, but through harmless change. The biggest difference here is the azure king strives to fix imperfection by covering it up with more imperfection whilst Kunikida holds himself as high as he needs perfection or close enough to fix imperfection. Both of their ideals are so strong it controls their life and how they act, if Kunikida were to “change his ideals” it would be extremely difficult.
Tumblr media
For example, his hope for change in Dazai. That’s a bit less serious though, since he’s just a pain in his ass.
6. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND ; WHY IT’S ODD.
The only thing we know about the azure kings backstory is he graduated at the top of his class from an elite educational institution. Similar to Kunikida, we barely know anything about him, except that he taught math in the past. Besides that, he doesn’t really talk about his past. I think it’s more than that, but this isn’t about his past. My point is, we don’t get much about people's educational knowledge on other characters, so it struck me as odd both of them had it mentioned, especially a terrorist. Who cares??
7. MY OPINION ; CONCLUSION.
In my opinion, the way Kunikida is in general is the opposite of him being the azure king, while they both are idealist’s, Kunikida is very against murder, as can be seen when he gets mad at Dazai when he lends his gun over.
Tumblr media
Or when he hugs a child with bombs strapped to her even while they go off. Sacrificing his life for a child? And his strong ideals against murder? It’s just very contradicting. There’s also contradictions in the plot of bungou stray dogs itself if this were to be the case, why is Kunikida always in the ADA? If he were the azure king he would need to be other places, and how would he have survived the explosion? The azure king, what the characters come down to, is a contrast to Kunikida’s character, a path that he could’ve went past; a challenge he faces, and I think we do know more about Kunikida and what he struggled with than just the eye surface, which is this. I also believe that the azure king is a mix between Kunikida and Dazai which is absolutely perfect because it’s about the beauty of the new partner Dazai has earned, whilst shining light on Kunikida’s character. The azure king did reckless things, he was suicidal, as Sasaki had said, “Every time he got up, he was knocked back down… he simply had enough. He lost his away, unable to realize his ideals, so he tried to… kill himself.” while also living for his ideals, like Kunikida.
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading this really long blog, if you want to discuss this more feel free to! You may also leave some other theory's in my questions box and I’ll try my best to respond. <3
