Recently been seeing a lot of “Yanderes are an ableist stereotype that demonizes people with BPD” discourse lately. I personally never drew the connection to BPD, but I do not have BPD so I cannot say anything about that. I have, however, been pondering about the very few characters in the archetype that I actually like and why that is because of this. One thing I noticed is all of the “”good”” yanderes are the ones that eventually evolve beyond being a cookie-cutter architype. Taihou from Azur Lane is the first example that comes to mind.

For the majority of you who don’t play Azur Lane, it has its own problematic elements to it (being unabashedly horny, the gross lolicon pandering with the Destroyers, the inherent unfortunate implications of personifying WW2 warships, ect.) but I love the characters and setting despite them. There are several characters that start out as your stereotypical yanderes, but they eventually grow to a much healthier mindset thanks to their support networks and you. This is best exemplified with Taihou, who goes from being willing to kill anyone who gets between her and you to being a kinder, sociable (if still somewhat obsessive) person who finally admits to herself that she cherishes the friends she has made over the years and can’t bring herself to think of them as obstacles to be removed anymore. I find that a really compelling arc about healing and self-improvement, and I wonder if this is a more positive interpretation of the archetype or if it is problematic in other ways.
