Azriel x fem!reader - Just a dress
Tumblr media
Summary: While shopping with Mor, Y/N is asked to model a beautiful wedding dress for a bridal shop in need of a last-minute replacement. She agrees, enjoying the fun of it—until Azriel, her mate, sees her. His shadows tighten, his gaze dark and intense. It’s just a dress
 so why does it feel like something deeper?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/N glanced at Mor, who was already grinning like she had won the lottery. “Oh, you have to do it,” Mor urged, practically bouncing on her heels.
The shop attendant clasped her hands together. “It’s a simple favor—just try on the dress, walk around a little, and in return, we’ll compensate you.” Her gaze swept over Y/N’s tall, elegant frame. “You’re perfect for it.”
Y/N tilted her head, considering. It did sound fun. And it wasn’t every day she got to play dress-up in a gown fit for royalty.
“Alright,” she said with a smirk. “Let’s do it.”
The attendant beamed and led them inside, where Y/N was soon whisked into a dressing room. The gown was decadent—intricate embroidery shimmering in the light, a full, sweeping skirt, and delicate lace detailing. When they placed the diadem on her head and finished her makeup, she barely recognized herself in the mirror. She looked
 ethereal. Regal.
Mor’s gasp as she stepped out confirmed it. “Holy shit, Y/N.” Her eyes widened with something between awe and mischief. “Azriel is going to pass out when he sees you.”
Y/N rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress the little flutter in her stomach at the thought.
She had agreed to walk around the boutique and outside for a bit, letting potential customers see the dress in motion. And of course, Mor was already plotting.
Y/N smirked. “Just don’t let Az see it.”
Mor’s wicked grin only widened. “Oh, no promises.”
Y/N gracefully walked alongside the shop representative as they guided her to the designated path where she’d be showcasing the dress. The streets of Velaris, always lively, now had curious onlookers pausing in their steps as she passed. Some whispered, some openly admired, and more than a few stopped in their tracks entirely.
Mor strolled beside her, looking far too pleased with herself, hands clasped behind her back like she was completely innocent.
Unbeknownst to Y/N, she had already reached out to Rhys through their mind link.
You need to get your asses down here. Now.
Rhys’s response was immediate. What did you do?
Mor barely contained her excitement as she side-eyed Y/N, who was completely unaware of the unfolding scheme. Not what I did. What Y/N did. She’s walking through Velaris in a wedding dress.
There was a moment of stunned silence before multiple voices chimed in at once.
Cassian: YOU’RE JOKING. WE’RE ON OUR WAY.
Rhysand: This I have to see.
Amren: Hah. Poor Azriel.
Azriel:
What?
Mor grinned but kept her expression neutral as she turned to Y/N, who was still elegantly making her way through the street, oblivious to the storm about to descend.
Oh, this was going to be fun.
Y/N, completely unaware of the chaos she’d just unleashed, continued walking with effortless grace, the luxurious wedding gown flowing around her like stardust. The diadem atop her head caught the light, making her look every bit the ethereal, untouchable bride. People on the street kept stopping to watch, whispering amongst themselves. Some even clapped in admiration.
Mor, biting her lip to keep from outright laughing, linked arms with her as they neared the end of the walk. “You know, you look obscenely good in that dress.”
Y/N smirked. “Of course I do.” Then, with mock seriousness, “It’s a shame no one I know is here to see it.”
Mor nearly snorted. If only Y/N knew.
Because right at that moment, Cassian, Rhys, Amren, and—most importantly—Azriel appeared at the edge of the street, blending into the crowd.
Rhys, hands in his pockets, took one look at Y/N and let out a low whistle. Damn.
Cassian, on the other hand, was losing his mind. “OH. MY. GODS.” He practically bounced on his feet. “I knew this was gonna be good, but this—this is better than I ever could have imagined.”
Amren crossed her arms, eyes flicking between Azriel and Y/N with amusement. “He’s going to combust.”
And Azriel—Azriel was frozen.
The moment his eyes landed on Y/N, everything else blurred into insignificance. The gown, the diadem, the way she moved with such natural confidence—it was lethal. She was breathtaking on any given day, but like this? Like this?
It took everything in him to school his expression, to keep himself from storming over, yanking her against him, and demanding when exactly she was planning to tell him she looked like that in a wedding dress.
Mor, watching all of this unfold, casually said through the mind link, Enjoying the view, Az?
His shadows curled tighter around him. You knew about this.
Obviously.
Cassian, watching Azriel’s battle for control, leaned over and whispered, “So, when’s the wedding?”
Azriel shot him a look so sharp it could have gutted a man. Cassian only grinned wider.
And then—Y/N finally noticed them.
Y/N, still blissfully unaware, turned her head slightly, about to make some offhand comment to Mor—when she spotted them.
Her steps faltered for a split second as her pale green eyes locked onto the group of familiar faces. And then—she saw him.
Azriel stood slightly apart from the others, his wings half-flared, shadows coiling around him in a way that told her everything. His expression was unreadable, but the intensity in his hazel eyes burned hotter than the sun.
“Oh, fuck,” Y/N muttered under her breath.
Mor cackled.
Cassian was barely holding in his laughter, whispering something to Rhys, who was just standing there, smug as all hell. Amren, as usual, looked more entertained than anything.
And Azriel?
He stalked toward her.
Y/N straightened automatically, an instinctive reaction to the sheer force of his gaze. As he closed the distance, she could practically feel the possessiveness rolling off him in waves, feel the weight of it in the way his jaw clenched, in the way his shadows swirled around his boots like they, too, were ready to drag her close and never let go.
She tilted her head, offering a smirk despite the sudden racing of her heart. “Well, hello there, shadowsinger.”
Azriel stopped right in front of her, his gaze sweeping over everything—the gown, the diadem, the way the silk hugged her curves just right.
“You didn’t think to mention this?” His voice was low, edged with something dark, something claiming.
Y/N’s smirk widened. “I didn’t think I needed to.”
Azriel let out a slow breath, his wings twitching slightly before he reached out, fingers brushing along the delicate embroidery on her sleeve. His touch was light, reverent—dangerous.
“This,” he murmured, eyes flicking up to hers, “is unfair.”
Y/N hummed, enjoying the heat in his gaze far too much. “Oh? Why’s that?”
Azriel’s lips parted like he was about to answer, but Cassian—because of course he did—ruined the moment.
“So,” the general called, grinning like a madman, “should we just start planning the wedding now or—”
Y/N turned sharply. “Cassian.”
Cassian held up his hands. “I’m just saying! You’re already in the dress—”
“I will fight you.”
“I’d like to see you try in that gown.”
Y/N’s eyes narrowed. “Oh, you absolute menace—”
But before she could launch herself at him—before she could even move—Azriel’s hand curled around her wrist, tugging her back toward him, his chest brushing against hers.
“You do look stunning,” he murmured, quiet enough that only she could hear.
Y/N blinked up at him, momentarily thrown off by the softness in his voice, by the intensity in his eyes.
Her breath hitched.
For once, she didn’t have a clever response.
Azriel’s fingers skimmed up her arm, a featherlight touch that sent a shiver through her. His eyes were still locked onto hers, intense, unreadable, drinking her in like she was something rare, something his.
Y/N swallowed. “You—” She cleared her throat, grasping for something smug to say, something to lighten the heat pooling in her stomach. “You keep looking at me like that, and I might think you’re planning something.”
Azriel’s lips barely twitched, his only response a slow, deliberate glance down the length of her. “I’m definitely planning something.”
Mother above.
Mor, meanwhile, was enjoying this way too much. “I have never seen you look so—” she wiggled her fingers dramatically in Azriel’s direction “—feral.”
Azriel didn’t even acknowledge her.
Rhys was still grinning, arms crossed, looking like he was storing this entire moment away for blackmail later. “I have to say, I didn’t expect this today.”
Y/N scoffed. “Neither did I, to be fair.” She gestured to the decadent gown. “It was supposed to be fun, not—” She flicked her eyes back to Azriel, whose expression hadn’t softened in the slightest. “—whatever this is.”
“This,” Azriel echoed, voice quieter now, though no less intense.
Y/N arched a brow. “You don’t like it?”
Azriel huffed a breath, stepping even closer, until she could feel his warmth, until his wings partially wrapped behind her like he was shielding her from everyone. His fingers skimmed the side of her waist, grazing the delicate fabric.
“I love it,” he admitted, so quiet only she could hear. “And I hate that everyone else can see you in it.”
Oh.
Y/N’s breath caught.
Azriel’s lips tilted up slightly. “You knew this would drive me insane.”
She grinned, regaining some of her composure. “Did I?”
His fingers flexed on her waist. “You did.”
Cassian clapped his hands. “Alright, lovebirds, before you two start making out in the middle of the street—”
Y/N threw him a glare, but he only smirked.
Amren, ever the voice of reason, just sighed. “Can we go now?”
Y/N huffed, shooting one last glance at Azriel before stepping back. He let her go—reluctantly—but his shadows still curled around her ankle as if refusing to let her slip too far away.
She smirked. “If you behave, shadowsinger, maybe I’ll wear this just for you later.”
Azriel’s jaw tightened.
Cassian whistled.
Mor lost it.
And as Y/N strode past them, chin held high, she could feel Azriel’s eyes still burning into her, still tracking her every movement, still plotting ways to make her pay for this little tease.
Maybe I should keep the dress.
Y/N felt the weight of Azriel’s gaze long after she had passed him, heat crawling up her spine as she tried—tried—to keep her composure. The gown, the diadem, the makeup
 it was all just supposed to be fun, something ridiculous and lighthearted. But now?
Now she was very aware of the fact that she had just paraded down the street looking like a bride, while her mate—her dangerously possessive mate—stood there looking like he was barely restraining himself from throwing her over his shoulder and flying them straight home.
Mor, still at her side, was cackling. “You’re evil for that.”
Y/N grinned. “I know.”
Cassian strolled up beside them, shaking his head. “You do realize you just gave him about a hundred new fantasies, right?”
Y/N snorted. “As if he didn’t already have them.”
Mor hummed. “True, but now? Now it’s personal.”
A shiver trailed down her spine, but before she could hink too much about it, the bridal shop representative rushed over, delighted by all the attention Y/N had drawn. “Oh, this was perfect!” The woman beamed. “You looked exquisite—so poised, so regal. And your mate—Mother above, his reaction was exactly the kind of passion we want associated with our dresses.”
Y/N barely held in a laugh. If only they knew.
The woman clapped her hands. “Would you consider modeling for us again in the future?”
Mor lost it, clutching her stomach as she doubled over in laughter.
Y/N smirked. “I’ll
 think about it.”
She could feel Azriel’s shadows still lingering near her, like they refused to let her out of their sight. Good. Let him suffer a bit.
Still, as she walked back to the shop to change, she sent a whisper through the bond.
Did you enjoy the show, shadowsinger?
A pause. Then, a voice like a dark promise.
You’ll pay for that, starlight.
Y/N’s stomach flipped.
Maybe she would keep the dress.
Y/N grinned wickedly as she stepped back into the bridal shop, Mor still laughing beside her. The moment the door shut behind them, she pressed a hand to her chest, her heart hammering as Azriel’s words lingered in her mind. You’ll pay for that, starlight.
Oh, she knew that tone.
And she absolutely planned to drag it out for as long as possible.
“Did you see his face?” Mor wheezed, wiping at her eyes. “Y/N, I swear to the Mother, I have never seen him like that before. He looked like he was this close to starting a public riot.”
Y/N smirked. “I was hoping for a reaction.” She turned, admiring herself in the massive mirror. “Didn’t expect to look this good, though.”
The gown was decadent—pure white with intricate silver embroidery that shimmered under the light. It clung to her curves, cascading in elegant folds, and the diadem in her long hair only added to the illusion of royalty. She looked like she belonged in an ancient, otherworldly court, a queen stepping out of legend.
And Azriel had seen it.
Y/N felt the heat of his gaze even now, the intensity that had burned through the crowd. Her smirk deepened.
Mor nudged her. “You have to keep this dress. I mean, come on. You look like some celestial queen.”
Y/N hummed. “You just want to see Azriel suffer more.”
“Absolutely.” Mor grinned. “And so do you.”
She didn’t even bother denying it.
After a few more minutes, Y/N reluctantly stepped back into the dressing room to change. The moment she pulled the heavy gown off, she exhaled, shaking her head at herself. She had just been playing along with the whole thing, but now, a deeper thought crept in.
Marriage.
She and Azriel hadn’t talked about it, not really. But standing out there, with the entire Inner Circle watching, with him watching, the thought had settled in a way it hadn’t before.
Would she marry him?
The answer struck her as effortlessly as breathing. Of course. She was his, just as he was hers. There was no question about it.
But still, the idea of it—the reality of a ceremony, of wearing a dress like this with intention—sent an unfamiliar feeling curling in her chest.
Excitement.
A little bit of fear.
And a lot of amusement, because she knew Azriel was still reeling.
By the time she stepped out in her normal clothes again, Mor had already sent another message through the bond link. Y/N raised a brow.
Mor just winked. “You’ll see.”
Y/N rolled her eyes, but when they finally stepped out of the shop, she did see.
Or rather—she felt it.
Azriel.
Leaning against the wall just outside, shadows curling around his frame, golden skin taut with restrained tension. His hazel eyes—burning—traced over her, head to toe, like he was still seeing her in that gown.
Y/N’s breath caught, but she smirked. “Came to pick me up, shadowsinger?”
His voice was dark silk. “Had to make sure you weren’t planning to run off and get married without me.”
Y/N let out a soft laugh, stepping close, just enough to taunt him with her presence. “Now, where’s the fun in that?”
Azriel’s eyes flickered with something dangerous. He leaned in, his breath warm against her ear as he murmured,
“You will pay for that, starlight.”
Y/N’s stomach flipped. Again.
Mor stifled a laugh behind them.
Y/N just tilted her chin up, meeting his smoldering gaze with a challenge. “Looking forward to it.”
@azrielappreciationweek | Day 1: Cool Quiet
For cool quiet, I wanted to explore the imagery surrounding Azriel. He’s often symbolized as Hades, and he and Elain have been given the Hades/Persephone aesthetic by Sarah. Azriel born of darkness is searching for his light and I just know Elain will be that shining beacon of hope for him. 🩇💙
Singing my heart out
Pairing : Azriel × reader
Word count : baby , Idk
Summery: Azriel is your roommate and you are in the mood to blast out songs but didn't expect Az to see you singing your personal concert .
Warnings : some kissing scenes, banter, fluff .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I looked outside the window, the city was bustling and small lights marked the streets. I couldn't hear the city noise, thanks to the soundproof glass but I was comforted by others going about their night.
I was having too much energy for tonight, and it will probably bite me in the ass later when going to bed and not being able to sleep.
So I turned towards my room and searched for my speaker and microphone which I had gifted myself as last year's birthday present. I wanted something fun and a dance song to get this pent-up energy out.
" Perfect, this is the one "
I grabbed my microphone and put on Taylor Swift cause there's nothing I love more than Miss Tay's music.
I started bobbing my head with the beat and closed my eyes.
" Midnight "
" You come and pick me up, no headlights
Long drive
Could end in burning flames or paradise"
Now I am doing a full-blown dance and singing like I am Miss Tay, ohh how I wish !!
"Fade into view, oh
It's been a while since I have even heard from you "
Now I am just letting go and feeling this music baby !!
"And I should just tell you to leave 'cause I
Know exactly where it leads, but I
That's it, this room is my concert and I am doing a show for the audience.
And I am singing as loud and proud as I can " You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style"
I am imagining someone's eyes they are golden and warm like honey and they hold me captivated. With my eyes held closed, I imagine him with his beautiful face looking at me with so much heat.
His eyes did not leave mine, not even blinking.
"You got that long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt
And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style"
His piercing gaze on me and his Adam's apple moving and now I am hot and bothered. With a fuzzy feeling in my stomach.
"So it goes
He can't keep his wild eyes on the road, mm
Takes me home
The lights are off, he's taking off his coat, mm, yeah"
I can't stray my eyes away and I just want to tear his clothes apart with my bare hands. And he's taking off his coat, the fuzzy feeling in my lower belly expanding.
"I say, "I heard, oh
That you've been out and about with some other girl, some other girl"
And that other gurl, I am gonna kill that one yeah!
He says, "What you heard is true, but I
Can't stop thinkin' 'bout you and I"
I said, "I've been there too a few times"
Yeah but gotta pretend that doesn't bother me. Yeah and as I open my eyes to roll them
There were warm eyes
Wait what ??
I stared, my eyes wide, song forgotten, Taylor you really need to shut up now.
His mouth tilted upwards, he looked at me from afar, arms crossed across his chest, the tattooed muscles bulging.
Standing and leaning against my door frame looks delicious with droplets dripping down his face, one coming down his neck and ...
Okay! Snap out of it.
I quickly or tried to turn off the speaker, turned calmly and placed my microphone on the bedside table, my back to his I took a deep breath.
" You don't have to stop at my expense, darling "
And coughed right out of the air. Turning towards him said, " Umm .. well I kinda was hoping I was alone "
I said looking down and playing with my hands and the string of my pajama pants !!
Oh no, I am in my pajamas! These are hideous.
" Well we can't let that whole show, go to waste can we ?"
Quickly untangling my hands, I looked up, " How long were you standing there ?"
" Since your tight little skirt, yeah that's what that was, isn't it? "
I tried to fight the blush creeping up my face but it was no use.
" It was an amazing show though, I thought I was having a heavenly experience. "
He said still leaning, still with his stupid smirk which was now turning into a smile.
" Shut up, I thought I was alone and wanted to burn off some energy, okay !? "
I said folding my own hands across my chest and his gaze moved towards my chest. Then I realized, were not covered with bras and we were perked up because of my little show here.
His gaze moved upwards but that smile had turned into something malicious.
I quickly dropped my hands to my sides, still unsure why had I put on my pajamas so early.
He stalked towards me.
" What are you... doing?"
He didn't stop until he was a foot away from me.
Feeling his warm breath, I tilted my head upwards, almost injuring his chin and my head.
"Oops sorry."
I said with intent to take a step back but his arms sneaked around my waist holding me in place and flushed against his.
Leaving me no room to breathe, he bent down brought his mouth close to my face and whispered in my ear
" Y/N, I can suggest many activities to release that energy ."
Too flabbergasted to answer I just stood there not breathing, just still.
" Y/N, darling you need to breathe."
I snapped out of it and took a slow, steady breath.
"Az," I said or wished to say but it came out as a whisper.
" Mhmm, yes ." He rumbled, his eyes darting between my mouth and eyes.
I felt his words to my core, but an idea snapped at me.
" That song, I was imagining Cas," I said fighting a smile.
His eyes snapped towards mine, the lust circling in his eyes, tampered down but still there.
He pulled himself back, his hand still around my waist.
" What did you just say ?" Raising an eyebrow, he said.
" I said ...."
I say saying every word and sound painfully slowly.
"I dare you to say another man's name right now," he said possession and jealousy in his eyes as he slowly stepped towards me.
I smirked and looked in those dark yellow eyes
I stepped back but due to the bed behind me I fell
" Oomph"
As we fell on the bed, I pinned underneath him.
" I said Cassi-"
His wings were tucked neatly and unraveled, and both hands were on either side of my face. He caged me and kissed me roughly with passion and so much hunger, I couldn't help but kiss him back but as I moved my hands for his hair, he grabbed both of my wrists and pushed them back into the mattress
I groaned he broke away from the kiss,
" This is your punishment for trying to tease me. No hands on me, and you are my dessert, which I am going to have early. "
He said smiling wickedly and as I went to pout, he roughly kissed me again.
That's how we spent our evening and safe to say I slept very peacefully that night with all the ' Activities' that I had done.
I hope you enjoyed this, it was my first time writing my crazy thoughts down so please feel free to correct me or give any feedbacks that you have. If you have any Azriel requests, do share these and I will talk to you soon.
Byeeee !!
“I don’t really know where I fit in anymore,” I admitted, perhaps only because the wind was screeching around us and Rhys had already winnowed ahead to where Cassian’s dark form flew—beyond the wall.
“I’ve been alive almost five and a half centuries, and I’m not sure of that, either,” Azriel said.
Azriel x Garden Fairy
Words:- 2.3k
Warning:- Fluff
Azriel’s mind was a mess, swirling with thoughts he didn’t want to linger on. The near kiss with Elain haunted him, her delicate scent still clinging to his senses. He had thought for a fleeting moment that maybe—just maybe—he could be happy. But happiness was an illusion, wasn’t it? One he had never been destined to grasp.
Rhysand had given him a mission shortly after, sensing Azriel’s need to get away. He didn’t ask questions, didn’t prod. He only gave him space, which Azriel desperately needed. So he left Velaris behind, flying over endless forests and valleys, hoping the open sky and cold wind would clear his mind.
Yet nothing seemed to help.
He touched down in a meadow, his shadows curling around him protectively. The place was vibrant, teeming with wildflowers in every colour imaginable, and the air smelled fresh, earthy, and rich. It should’ve calmed him, but even here, he felt restless, a storm churning beneath his calm exterior.
That’s when he heard her laugh.
Azriel’s head snapped in the direction of the sound. It was light, musical, and utterly captivating. His shadows swirled toward it, eager to explore, but he didn’t need them to tell him where she was. He could see her.
She was standing in a small patch of greenery, her hands on her hips as she glared at a puddle of mud. Her friends, other garden fairies judging by their leafy attire and small, translucent wings, were giggling beside her.
“Yeah, no, I don’t like mud,” she said, wrinkling her nose adorably.
One of her friends tilted her head, clearly amused. “But you’re a garden fairy,” she pointed out as if that explained everything.
The fairy rolled her eyes dramatically, crossing her arms. “Ironic, isn’t it? Such a drama queen,” she added with a huff, earning more laughter from her friends.
Azriel found himself smiling before he could stop himself. There was something about her that drew him in, something light and warm that made the cold shadows within him retreat. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt that way.
Her friends egged her on-again, gesturing toward the other side of the puddle. “Just jump.”
The garden fairy groaned, stomping her foot. “Okay, alright. I’m coming,” she said with exaggerated frustration before leaping over the mud in an awkward yet endearing manner.
Azriel’s shadows stirred around him, curious in this strange, captivating creature. He found himself stepping closer, careful to keep his footsteps silent, not wanting to disturb the moment.
But she noticed him anyway.
Her head turned toward him, and their eyes met. Azriel froze.
She was breathtaking.
Her skin seemed to glow under the sunlight, and her hair was a cascade of soft curls that shimmered like spun gold. But it was her eyes that held him captive—bright, sparkling, and filled with a mischievous warmth that made something stir in his chest.
“Oh, hello,” she said, tilting her head in curiosity. Her friends glanced at him, wary, but the garden fairy herself didn’t seem the least bit afraid. Instead, she took a step forward, closing the distance between them slightly. “You’re not from around here, are you?”
Azriel cleared his throat, trying to gather his composure. “No. I was
 just passing through.”
Her lips curved into a teasing smile. “Well, you don’t look like the passing-through type.”
His brows furrowed. “What does that mean?”
She shrugged, a playful glint in her eyes. “You look more like the brooding-in-the-shadows type. Very mysterious.”
Azriel blinked, momentarily caught off guard by her boldness. He didn’t know whether to be annoyed or amused.
“I’m Azriel,” he said, deciding to ignore her teasing tone. “And you are?”
“Faye,” she answered with a grin. “Guardian of this little garden paradise.”
“Guardian?” he repeated, arching a brow.
“Well, technically a garden fairy, but guardian sounds cooler, don’t you think?”
Azriel found himself chuckling softly, something he rarely did. “Cooler, yes. Accurate? I’m not so sure.”
Faye placed a hand dramatically over her heart. “You wound me, stranger.” But there was no malice in her words, only humour. “So, Azriel, what brings you here? Besides brooding, of course.”
“I’m on a mission,” he said simply, though even he wasn’t sure what his mission was anymore. He had come here to find peace, but instead, he had found her—and she was anything but peaceful.
Faye studied him for a moment, her gaze sharp despite the lightness of her demeanor. “Well, if you’re going to be hanging around, you might as well help. This garden doesn’t take care of itself, you know.”
Azriel raised a brow. “Help? With what?”
She gestured to the greenery around them. “Watering, planting, weeding
 you know, garden stuff.”
He looked down at his dark leathers, clearly not designed for gardening, and then back at her. “I don’t think I’m dressed for it.”
Faye laughed, a sound that made his shadows flicker in response. “Don’t worry, I won’t make you touch any mud. I know how awful it can be,” she said with a wink.
Azriel couldn’t help but smile again. This fairy was unlike anyone he had ever met. Bold, bright, and full of life—a stark contrast to the shadows that clung to him. And yet, he found himself drawn to her as if she was a light he hadn’t realized he needed.
Over the next few days, Azriel stayed in the garden, helping Faye with her tasks despite his initial reluctance. They fell into an easy rhythm—she would chatter endlessly about the plants and flowers, and he would listen quietly, occasionally offering a dry comment that made her laugh.
They talked about everything and nothing, sharing stories and experiences. Azriel found himself opening up in ways he hadn’t thought possible, and Faye
 Faye was simply herself, vibrant and unfiltered.
There were moments of quiet too, where they would sit together, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of gold and crimson. In those moments, Azriel felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time—peace.
And with that peace came something else.
Something deeper.
Something he wasn’t sure he was ready to name.
One afternoon, Azriel found Faye sitting on a rock, her hands covered in dirt as she tended to a patch of flowers. She looked up when she saw him, a smudge of dirt on her cheek.
“Don’t say it,” she warned, pointing a finger at him.
“Say what?” he asked innocently.
“Something about how ironic it is that a garden fairy doesn’t like mud.”
Azriel smirked. “I would never.”
She narrowed her eyes at him, clearly not believing a word he said. “You’re impossible.”
“And you’re dramatic,” he shot back, his tone light.
Faye laughed, the sound like a balm to his soul. “TouchĂ©.”
The days passed in a blur of sunlight and laughter, and with every moment Azriel spent with Faye, he found himself growing more attached to her—this bold, vibrant garden fairy who somehow made his shadows feel less heavy.
For as long as he could remember, Azriel’s life had been one of duty, shadows, and unspoken desires. He had never allowed himself to entertain the idea of a different life—a lighter one, full of joy and warmth. And yet, here he was, standing in the middle of a blooming garden, watching Faye tease her friends and stomp around with exaggerated drama when forced to touch mud as if it were the bane of her existence.
He knew he should have left by now. His mission was complete—he had investigated the disturbances in the nearby forest, reported back to Rhysand, and confirmed there was no imminent threat. There was no reason for him to stay. And yet
He stayed.
Azriel leaned against the trunk of a towering oak tree, arms crossed over his chest as he observed Faye from a distance. She was busy arranging a cluster of flowers into neat rows, her delicate fingers brushing over the petals with surprising care despite her earlier disdain for all things muddy.
“You’re staring again,” came a light voice from beside him. Azriel glanced to his left to see one of Faye’s friends—a fellow garden fairy with sharp green eyes and a knowing smirk.
“I wasn’t staring,” Azriel replied smoothly, though his shadows betrayed him, swirling restlessly around his shoulders as if they were unsettled by the accusation.
“Sure, you weren’t,” the fairy said, her tone teasing. “You know, if you like her, you could just tell her.”
Azriel shot her a warning look. “It’s not that simple.”
The fairy raised a brow. “Why not? You’re here, she’s here. You enjoy each other’s company.” She paused, her expression softening. “Faye may seem like she’s always full of light and laughter, but she doesn’t let people in easily. If she’s let you stay this long, it means something.”
Azriel’s gaze shifted back to Faye, who was now attempting to balance a watering can on her head, much to the amusement of the other fairies. Her laughter rang out across the meadow, clear and pure, and something in Azriel’s chest tightened.
Maybe the fairy was right. Maybe it did mean something.
But how could someone like him—who carried so much darkness—ever hope to deserve someone like Faye?
Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the garden was bathed in a warm golden glow, Faye found Azriel sitting alone on a flat rock by the stream. His shadows danced lazily around him, blending into the growing dusk. He looked so out of place in the peaceful garden, a figure of darkness surrounded by light. And yet, to Faye, he fit perfectly.
“Mind if I join you?” she asked, her voice soft.
Azriel glanced up, surprised. “Of course.”
She plopped down beside him, close enough that their shoulders almost touched. For a moment, they sat in silence, listening to the gentle burble of the stream.
“You know,” Faye began, her voice thoughtful, “I’ve been wondering something.”
Azriel tilted his head slightly, waiting for her to continue.
“Why did you stay?” she asked, turning to face him fully. “You finished your mission days ago. Most people would have left by now.”
Azriel hesitated, unsure how to answer. How could he explain that he stayed because of her? Something about her had captivated him in a way he hadn’t thought possible.
“I needed time to think,” he said at last, which wasn’t a lie—it just wasn’t the whole truth.
Faye didn’t press him, but there was a flicker of disappointment in her eyes, gone so quickly he almost missed it. “Well, whatever the reason, I’m glad you stayed,” she said with a smile. “You’re not half bad to have around.”
Azriel’s lips twitched upward. “High praise coming from someone who called me brooding and mysterious.”
“Hey, I call it like I see it,” Faye said with a playful shrug. Then, after a brief pause, she added, “You know, you don’t always have to be so serious.”
Azriel raised a brow. “I’m not serious all the time.”
“Oh?” Faye challenged a mischievous gleam in her eyes. “Prove it.”
Before Azriel could respond, Faye reached over and plucked a small flower from the ground, twirling it between her fingers. “Here. Hold this.”
Azriel took the flower, his large scarred hand dwarfing the delicate bloom. He stared at it, unsure what to do.
“Now,” Faye said, leaning closer, “smile.”
Azriel blinked. “What?”
“You heard me. Smile. Come on, I know you can do it.”
Azriel shook his head, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. “You’re impossible.”
“And you’re avoiding the challenge,” Faye shot back, crossing her arms.
With a resigned sigh, Azriel allowed himself a small smile—just enough to satisfy her demand.
“There it is!” Faye declared triumphantly. “See? Not so serious after all.”
Azriel’s smile widened just a fraction. “You’re ridiculous.”
“And you’re adorable when you’re trying to be grumpy,” Faye teased, poking him lightly in the side.
Azriel chuckled softly, a sound that surprised even himself. He couldn’t remember the last time he had laughed—truly laughed. But with Faye, it felt natural, like breathing.
As night fell and the stars began to twinkle above, Azriel found himself dreading the moment when he would have to leave. He didn’t want this—didn’t want to say goodbye to Faye and the light she had brought into his life.
But he knew he couldn’t stay forever. His duties in Velaris awaited him, and he had never been one to shirk responsibility.
Still, as he looked at Faye, who was now lying on the grass, pointing out constellations and spinning fanciful tales about them, he felt a longing he couldn’t ignore.
“I have to leave soon,” he said quietly, the words tasting bitter on his tongue.
Faye stilled, her hand pausing mid-gesture. Slowly, she sat up, her expression carefully neutral. “I figured as much.”
Azriel looked away, unable to meet her gaze. “I don’t want to.”
“Then don’t,” Faye said simply.
He turned back to her, surprised. “It’s not that simple.”
Faye sighed, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “I know. I just
” She trailed off, searching for the right words. “I like having you here, Azriel. You make this place feel
 different. Better.”
Her confession took him by surprise, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to respond. But then, before he could overthink it, he reached out and took her hand in his.
“I feel the same way,” he admitted, his voice low. “You make me feel different. Better.”
Faye’s eyes widened slightly, but then she smiled—a soft, genuine smile that made Azriel’s heartache in the best way.
“Then stay a little longer,” she whispered. “Just a little longer.”
Azriel tightened his grip on her hand, a silent promise. “As long as you’ll have me.”
