My first soda-fired bowl! Soda is sprayed into the kiln at 1200 deg Celsius and then the kiln is shut off when it reaches 1300 (approx cone 10-11 firing). It’s been a dizzying whirlwind of learning here in Chile at @centrodeartecuraumilla with @ayumihorie ! Among many things, we practiced the Mishima technique (custom-made colored slip inlay), so the lines on this bowl were one of my attempts at practicing Mishima! One factor that made it more challenging is that we once-fired, which means there was no bisque firing and we had to directly apply Mishima and glazes to greenware at varying stages of dryness. (Mishima at leather hard, glaze at bone dry). This is because there is no power source besides solar and generator at the art center, so the kiln is primarily gas-fired with supplemental wood and fans used. Ayumi and us students are not used to once-firing so it was nerve wracking and scary at times, but we all love the mystery and risk of ceramics, so it added an element of hightened anticipation for all of us, as we waiting to see what would happen to our pots in the kiln! We all went through ups and downs this week, worked early and late into the nights with headlamps, and rewarded ourselves with walks to the beach and dips in the wood-fired hot tub overlooking the ocean. I haven’t yet had time to process much of my two weeks, but I have a week now to chill in Chile and wander before heading home. Thanks for following along and supporting me through buying my work and your friendships. I am always so inspired at how clay can bring us together no matter what hemisphere we’re currently in! Now I’m off to explore the hauntingly beautiful city of Valparaiso 💗 Ciao! 😘 #sodafire #sodafiring #mishima #cone10 #coloredslip #curaumilla #ceramicsinchile #valparaiso https://www.instagram.com/p/B8oZeMag55S/?igshid=cxu6zm4fwlld

BE A SHARP THORN, KEEP POKING. A reminder mug for those of us to continue to stand up for what we believe in, what we believe a democracy to be, and for facts. Not alternative facts. I'm going to dedicate a portion of my time to make ceramics in lieu of @ayumihorie project @thedemocraticcup Two days ago in Ithaca it was 50 degrees. Now there is snow. A huge aspect of climate change is wide fluctuations in weather temperatures. The EPA was ordered to not use the words "climate change" or "global warming." What words will be used instead when Mar A Lago in Florida floods due to rising sea levels?

💛 Does this quote resonate with you too? When I was reading "In the Company of Women: Inspiration and Advice from Over 100 Makers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs", these words from Ayumi Horie's interview struck me and I had to write them down! Repost @ayumihorie ・・・ 🔊📦 7 STEPS BELOW for @potsinaction's #PIAsystems. Recently, I’ve switched from bubble wrap to corrugated wrap to be more eco-friendly. I still use stretch wrap because I’ve found that it’s the best method to getting a package tight with no rattling around. Maybe they’ll come up with some biodegradable stretch wrap soon. The corrugated wrap makes the boxes a bit heavier, which increases its carbon footprint and cost, but at least it won’t end up floating in the ocean. 1. Cut the corrugated wrap so there’s ¾-1” extra top and bottom. . 2. Whether it’s 2 or more cups, orient them so their handles are tucked in against the next pot. This saves space and protects the vulnerable handle. If it’s a single cup, put the handle in the corner of the box. . 3. Use at least 3 layers of wrap between the pots as a cushion. I like at least ¼” between pots. The idea is to save where you can between pots and maximize space between the pots and the side of the box. . 4. Wrap it really tightly so nothing can shift in shipping I’ve doubled up the strips here but you can also wrap one way and then wrap perpendicularly to it. A good rule of thumb is that if you push hard with your finger, you shouldn’t be able to feel the pot . 5. Fold over the edges, because this where most weak spots are in packing. Sometimes I reinforce the edges with more cardboard, just to be safe. When the edges are folded over this keeps the pots from sliding out but to be safe, I also add packing in the middle. It looks messy but I think stiff corners help with cushioning . 6. I use cubed boxes because I then always have an inner and outer box with 2” of space all the way around. Often shipping companies will only honor insurance claims if there’s 2” of space between inner and outer box. For all light and medium weight boxes, we use biodegradable peanuts between inner and outer boxes. In this video, I stop after the inner box. 👂I’d love to hear what people think and what your shipping methods are!✨
