Unsure if I'm going to write more on this, but would be happy to see what anyone else does with the concept. Also I accidentally deleted this post when I tried to update it. Whoops.

When Aymeric had gone to speak to his blood-father of what they had learned of their war… the others had expected him to try to convince Thordan to speak the truth about their nation's past and the dragons' hatred for them, or for the Archibishop to take him prisoner to see how many more knew the truth; no one had expected Aymeric to emerge on the eve of their rescue attempt, with a calm smile and a strange light shining in his eyes, saying that the Archbishop had tried to show him truth and had been found wanting, and that now it fell to him to save their nation.

Estinien had seen it first and Haurchefant soon after, the strangeness in him - the way his tactics shifted away from defense to offense, the new reports he requested about the Empire and about the state of the Alliance, the curious overtures he made to the Warrior of Light about placing more resources behind the Scions and making them a force that could stand against the Ascians and win; by the time they realized that he was not himself - by the time they realized that he in secret had been tempered and overtaken his father with his new-found strength, seized command of the Heavens' Ward and taken the powers offered to them by the Ascians as his own - it was too late to save him.

They would not survive this, they feared, as the primal that had tempered the man they'd once loved was powerful and bore the hopes and dreams of generations of Ishgardians… but Haurchefant could not give up hope that the commander he'd cared for was still there somewhere, beneath his dreams of King Thordan and a world united under Ishgard, while Estinien knew that he was gone and that the Aymeric he'd known would sooner die than become a tyrant, no matter how benevolent he may try to be.

You know what makes Aymeric and Haurchefant special?

Despite having every reason to be cold, vengeful, mean and selfish people-being bastards, living in a house they weren't born to, growing up in an environment as hostile as Ishgard, having inherent beliefs different to everyone around them- they still chose to be kind.

I think it takes something away from them if we assume they were simply born with a kinder deposition.

Haurchefant was bullied by all of Ishgard, including his step mother, for being a Greystone. Aymeric was adopted and has really low self esteem because he probably grew up hearing how ill deserving he is of everything he got by being adopted into house Borel. Yet they both made a conscious choice to be better. They wanted to treat others the way they wanted to be treated themselves. They wanted to love and invite change when Ishgard taught hate and stagnation.

This is why the warrior of light would've failed in doing everything they did if it wasn't for Haurchefant and Aymeric. How many warriors of light have tried helping Ishgard before us? Over hundreds of years of war, this revolution can't have been the only one. Yet it was during our lifetime that the stars aligned perfectly to have Haurchefant aid us and Aymeric lead us into changing Ishgard for the better and bring about peace.

Without Haurchefant, we'd have ended up in prison and possibly executed (he saves us again by taking a blow meant for us) and we wouldn't have been let into Ishgard. And without Aymeric's trust over his best friend he wouldn't have let us go to Dravania and afterwards, invite the reality shattering truth about his ancestors' actions and usher Ishgard to peace and unity.

Everyone hails the Warrior of Light as the antithesis to bad with absolute power. That, if they're there, everything is solved. But without Haurchefants and Aymerics, the Warrior of Light would be nothing and would not be able to solve half the problems they have solved.

Yandere Haurchefant is hopelessly devoted to you. Sure it's not super different from regular Haurchefant who is Down Bad™ for WOL but I think here it becomes more of an obsession. Now, Yandere Aymeric is giving me many thoughts thanks to this fic called Captivate so though I am a firm subscriber to the idea that literally only Zenos might be able to lock up WOL, I can also make an exception to Aymeric because of this fic. Please read it this changed my feelings for Aymeric. Though, Aymeric locking you up would also require him to have a sadistic streak, which he doesn't really have and this fic itself also feels like an AU where Aymeric actually caved in and became a piece of shit due to his upbringing. However, my personal idea for Yandere Aymeric is that via his political power, he pushes you to be with him. Of course, he only does this if you reject his advances at first. He would 100% find a way to force you in a semi-political marriage with him. Like I said before, no one can hold WOL down, but, he can keep you on a leash. No matter how long, he can always reel you back in if he wants to. I think he would harbor a bit of guilt personally. Like, he knows it's unhealthy, he knows it's hurting you- but he just wants you so damn bad. And he tries to make it up to you with gifts and whatnot, but at the end of the day, your collar, no matter how gilded and comfortable, is still a collar. And the Lord Commander had the leash.

Questions 2 and 7!

2. How important is your OCs relationship(s) to their story? Would it still make sense without it? Or is their connection to this other character integral to their development?

A story without Shira's relationships I developed thus far would just be A Realm Reborn and Heavensward without the extra pain, angst and drama. So, it would still make sense plot-wise in the grand scheme of things...

Did Haurchefant and Shira need to fall in love? Not really, but also it's Haurchefant: your staunchest supporter and also maybe really down bad for you depending on what language you play in. If it was Aymeric or Estinien who first knew about Shira's circumstances I think it would probably go fairly differently. Aymeric would probably be fairly clinical about the procedures of handling it. Estinien... I don't think he could really offer that much emotional support.

As I said before, Shira needed Haurchefant. I found the guy likeable though I didn't instantly latch onto him. In Before the Dawn and Divine Intervention, he really warmed my heart.

If there was no Haurchefant, Shira would probably not have survived. She would have not been able to continue her story.

7. How important is other people’s investment in (or enthusiasm for) your character’s relationship? Was this a consideration when you were planning it? Have you ever changed a character’s relationship(s) due to other people’s response to it?

I have many hands and a brain that can make a lot of ideas if you give me the right fuel (generally of the angst or hatefuck variety).

I also didn't really find Estinien that attractive in the beginning, though his interactions in Heavensward had me laughing even if the humour is unintentional. The guy might be my favourite little jester right now. By the Fury... As long as I have a little gremlin feeding me more Wolstinien Propaganda, I can see this continuing forseeably in the future.

I have not posted my Aymeric drabbles up on AO3 yet, though I am very surprised and pleased at the positive feedback I got on my Aymeric fics. I find him very interesting to write as a character. I want to try to convey the nuances of his personality and upbringing without falling head over heels in love with Shira. If that's of interest to people, then I'm definitely willing to explore more with Aymeric.

Right now I am keeping all my options open in multi-shipping and seeing what sticks. When I try to lock in for a pairing and devote all my time to it, I find that I often fail to develop something robust. I've had my eyes and mind opened to a polyamorous lifestyle after befriending people in the community (I remain monogamous, however). So an OT3 could definitely be a possibility as well... Or a polycule, even.

Oh, and I go feral for evil old men. Even if only me and one other person like Ilberd, I will continue to write 20+ chapters just to cover Ilberd's effects on Shira.

Okay guys but think about Aymeric for a minute.

He is adopted into a family of nobles when he comes from, possibly, a low born mother who was possibly forced into sleeping with a powerful man like Thordan. Had to keep quiet about it and possibly lose her son right after giving birth. Aymeric grew up hearing rumours about being a bastard, about not deserving his life, about how lucky he is, how he was probably a mistake.

And now he is the only one alive to carry on the Borel name, becomes the lord commander of the temple knights at a very young age, then lord speaker of Ishgard, slayer of Fafnir, unifier of dragons and men after a thousand year of war. All this while he grows up hearing he will never be good enough. Imagine how insecure that must make him. Having achieved so much will not make him think "wow, I really am amazing. Sure showed them!" It will just stress him out even more, thinking he can't do it, he isn't capable enough to carry these responsiblities out, not deserving enough to. In fact, idk if we've ever seen him being proud of himself or even happy? Doesn't he always want to jump to the next task? He is too humble for someone in his position, sometimes it's like he doesn't believe he is actually as good as he is said to be.

I think this is shown by his decision to give up his position as lord commander as soon as they finish dealing with Nidhogg. Like, he will do his duty and stop. Because he doesn't think he can do it anymore. He thinks he is not important enough so he goes to confront his father by himself in the lion's den itself, so to speak. Practically kills his father, almost kills his best friend to do his duty, brings about peace and much needed change and gets stabbed for it. How shit must that make him feel about himself?

Aymeric is so good at being a well spoken, smooth politician, we forget to see how broken he must really be inside and he is all alone. Even Lucia isn't with him anymore, having to stay at Garlemald.

The way his eyes light up every time he sees the warrior of light, calling them 'my friend,' every second sentence, as if pleading to be called the same. Writing to Estinien whenever he can, having a deep wanderlust and adventurous spirit but being unable to fulfil it. He is so much like G'raha in this sense but unlike him, Aymeric hasn't gotten his happy ending yet.

The man is so alone but so dutiful. So insecure but so good at hiding it. He craves connection but his duty forces him to be unable to make it. I cannot imagine how hard he has it.

He needs hugs 😭

- will play with your hair until he passes out. aymeric will keep himself awake to see that you’re asleep first and won’t ever let himself fall asleep without kissing your forehead first.

HAURCHEFANT:

- haurchefant on some big spoon little spoon type shit like he wants every inch of your body lining his like …

- he just wants to hold you all night long!!! like aymeric, he will try his best to make sure that he’s holding you safely from behind, but will let go if you are uncomfortable.

- wakes up when you stir too much and makes sure that you have enough blankets to cover you

- if you do wake up in the middle of the night, he’s right beside you to make sure everything is okay. will get you a glass of water if you’re thirsty or another blanket to cover up… although he’d rather warm you up in another way ;)

ESTINIEN:

- i feel like he sleeps like a victorian child

- estinien actually loves to cuddle before he goes to bed!!! come here pookie ~ like he wants to hold you and give you a kissy and then hopefully fall asleep like that (you on top of him)

- if you get uncomfortable and roll away, however, be warned that he is not nearly as nice as the others.

- hogs ALL of the covers so you have to fight him throughout the night for warmth. you moved away from him so now you play the price.

- even though he can be a meanie pants… if he senses that you’re having a tough time sleeping or a nightmare, estinien will bring you close to him and hold you to his chest, giving you a light kiss and a ‘i love you’ so you know it’s okay.

FFXIV fanfics are so well written it's actually insane. EVERY single fic I've found on A03 whether it's WOL OC or just canon characters seems to have been touched by Shakespeare himself because what the fuck. I am intensely jealous of the writers who manage to emulate the more archaic and formal feel of FFXIV's dialogue and general vibe. Like woweee, funny words.

Even the ones in a more modern jargon are sooooo good. Like it still works for me and somehow I'm always grinning and kicking my feet like an idiot when my favorite character (Haurchefant) shows up.
