I went through so much trial and error with this and I’m going to call it lol. Here’s some lore under the cut though:

I imagine this scene takes place 4-5 years after Sonic and Amy had last seen each other. Sonic expected Amy to tackle him upon her and Knuckles’s arrival but was pleasantly surprised when she didn’t. Instead, Amy simply curtsied and inquired how he had been, and that she hoped he’d been well, before moving on to converse with Blaze and Ayla. Sonic brushes it off and joins in on Knuckles and Silver’s conversation but can’t help looking over and wondering whether Amy truly had moved on, and the possibility he may have realised his own feelings too late.

He’ll later realise that she’s just hiding her feelings for him (thanks to an insider tip from Ayla when he goes to her asking for advice) but bc he’s more shy about openly admitting his affection, he leans more towards trying to hint at it (horribly) until Amy initiates the conversation. Spoiler: he initiates first since Amy would be stubborn about her new resolve to hide her feelings for him 😁

MTG: The Curse of the Werefox

In Magic: The Gathering there are four cards (at the moment, Aetherdrift spoilers are winding down and I don’t imagine I’m going to be wrong by the end of the week) with the word ‘love’ in their names. These cards are the Love Song of Night and Day, the Lovestruck Beast, True Love's Kiss, and Tunnel of Love. This is if you ignore weirdo outsiders like Everglove Courier and Steel Overseer, which, you know, they are there on a technicality.

Nonetheless, love is incredibly important to Magic: The Gathering and its story. Love stories are common, widespread even. Not just familial love – but grand, sweeping, romantic love, as written in some cases by complete bozos. When I started playing the game, back in Scourge, the ongoing story was focused on the narrative around the woman Akroma, Angel of Wrath, and her war against Phage the Untouchable, and root to that story was Akroma being a recreated copy of a man’s lost love that got really mad at everything and since that point we’ve been getting newer and potentially cooler stories.

Love has been central to a host of the stories of Magic The Gathering, including the one, barely told, on a host of cards named Curse of the Werefox.

Content Warning: This article is going to have nothing to do with like, Magic: The Gathering decks and ways to play the game or how things are designed. This is just about a love story told in one of the settings.

Spoiler Warning: I’m going to talk about the lore of a bunch of cards from Wilds of Eldraine, and that means explaining the story that’s on the cards and uh, I guess that involves telling you how the story ‘ends’?

In Wilds of Eldraine there was a set of ten fairy stories that were meant to be representative of broad, simple narratives retold through Magic: The Gathering in the fairytale story setting. There was a Sorcerer’s Apprentice story, there was a Sleeping Beauty story, a Goldilocks story, so on and so forth, and one of those stories, told in green and white cards, was the story of the curse of the werefox.

Let’s see if you recognise it.

In the deep wilds of Eldraine, there is Redtooth Keep, an ancient castle holding elves well away from the courts of Ayla. This keep is found by Syr Armont, a knightly woman known for being just and hot and unwilling to tolerate injustice, which is to say, three different ways of describing her as being hot. She comes to the keep with a regiment of knights, where it turns out that not only were the Redtooth elves ancient, cautious elves who at some point in the past, turned away a traveller, refusing them, and then being cursed to take on a form that matched their nature.

That’s why all the elves in the Redtooth Keep are werefoxes.

You know, the uh

I’m not a faerie prince (as far as you know) so I honestly have no idea how you might, when trying to punish someone for being inhospitible, see turning them into a werefox, as some kind of dramatic irony point. Anyway, some of Armont’s knights fight the werefoxes because I don’t know, making friends with the big cool furry fox people is hard or something, and Armont instead finds the leader of the werefoxes, Yenna. Through nonspecific and deliberately elided time interacting, Yenna is described as ‘eventually warming’ to Armont’s kindness, and then the pair decide to go get the rose, a flower, which they do, and break the curse on the werefoxes.

Alright, that means we have ourselves a story of two women who work together to go get a flower and in the process break a curse on one of them. This is only after a time of growth together and where one of the two parties were able to overcome her distrust and the instillment of her curse, and in the process they go and get a flower that signifiers the resolution of that curse. This is all while the people around both of them are saying ‘hey, this sucks and we should fight.’

It is, fundamentally, Beauty and the Beast reimagined in a somewhat ropy fashion as part of a game that doesn’t have a lot of grounds for mechanics to represent a character whose capacities are wide and varied but not very specific, especially when that character was kind of just an outline for a mechanical package. The cards in question are, uh, they’re just fine? They’re not powerful, they’re not exciting, they’re just… present.

And they’re in love. I mean, the story doesn’t at any point show Asmont and Yenna making out sloppy style. That’s not really how they are, not really the kinds of people they are, at least in the vibes we get out of all the source material which is, again, a handful of cards and two character cards, one of which has no flavour text. In all the cards that relate to this story, there are seven cards’ flavour text, and if you can construct this story without any instruction externally? Good luck. I’d be impressed.

That means there’s room for someone to go: Maybe the black woman and the white woman aren’t in love, and you’re all just imagining something that isn’t there?

Thing is, though, this is Beauty and the Beast. The actual source material explaining this story is barely an outline. The text looks like a buzzfeed listicle missing all the gifs:

Lady Armont, looking for a way to heal the realm after the Phyrexian invasion, journeys deep into the wilds with her band of loyal knights. In the forest, by sheer coincidence, she stumbles upon Redtooth Keep where the ancient bloodline of elves live. The elves are cursed to transform into werefoxes at night. Lady Armont commits herself to solving this mystery and breaking the curse. Some of her knights, concerned with their own survival, battle against the werefoxes despite Armont’s wishes. Yanna, leader of the werefoxes, warms up to Armont’s kindness and tells her of the enchanted rose that will break the spell. It is guarded by an archon in a glade nearby. Armont and Yanna venture to the glade in search of the rose.

That’s, that’s literally it.

And that’s enough!

Because the thing is, being a Beauty and the Beast story means you have to be able to read this whole story in the context of an existing, real, obvious story that doesn’t require you to be a big dumbass or pretending to be a big dumbass. Beauty and the Beast is a love story. The thing that redeems the Beast of his miscreant ways is falling in love and growing past his resentment to become part of a couple with whoever his particular belle is.

If you tell a story of Beauty and the Beast that focuses on two characters who have a platonic handshake at the end, you need to be explicit and clear about it, because it’s Beauty and the Beast. It’s a story known as its status of being a love story.

Korey family Lore!

Ooo, okay where do I start...first! The Adiels are all followers of Daz!

Now— Her parents.

They've been unnamed for a while now, I was planning to keep it this way because Korey literally forgot their names. But, eh, oh well.

-Korey's mother is Achara Hathai, she's of Thai descent, and comes from a very, very strict family with a lot of traditions and a lot of kids. She's the 5th daughter of 6, barely getting any care by her own parents. She was married off the day she turned 18 years old to Korey's dad, Haneul Adiel.

-Haneul Adiel wasn't a caring man either, but a spoiled one. Raised by loving yet somewhat entitled parents with little punishment for his actions. He's of Korean descent, his parents were the ones who mostly took care of Korey as a kid. He was married to 18 year old Achara when he was about 24 years old.

Achara and Haneul's marriage was a loveless one, only conceiving children to keep the family line going. They both had no respect for each other, getting into arguments almost every day.

Now! To Korey's brothers!

-Esra 'Hathai' Adiel.

The oldest child of the family at 24 years old. Raised just like his parents were, with barely any love at all. Haneul not caring for his existence, Achara too young to care for a child. Raised with mostly neglect, but he was noticed enough to be emotionally abused by his father, forced to do his bidding till he snapped out of it when he turned 17 years old, running away from home, and visiting in secret to make sure his younger siblings are okay.

Esra met Diana Claire at 20 years old, her at 19 years old. A kind deaf woman with a sad past, who was raised as an orphan after her parents abandoned her with her uncle and aunt who'd often abuse her both mentally and sexually. Running away from her adoptive home at 16 years old. Getting taken in by a family of fox halfbloods who were living in the sanctuary.

Back to Esra and Diana— they'd both fallen for each other at first sight, but only started to date a year after meeting, marrying each other almost 2 years after. Even adopting a baby a year in their marriage, they named her Ayla.

Esra actually has a pretty big potential to be a mage, and that's his goal, enrolling into a school for magic users. His affinities are crystal and light!

-Korey 'Hathai' Adiel.

Korey is the middle child at 19 years old. She was born with prosopagnosia, a condition where you have difficulty recognising people's faces. This freaked her out, a LOT. making her attempts for her parents attention more desperate so they could look at her, so she could see their faces again. Haneul, Korey's father, was very aware of this condition of hers, and would taunt her by forcing her mother and him to not look at her once. Resulting in Korey purposefully hurting herself, putting herself in severe danger to get their attention, but nothing worked.

At 12 years old. Korey accidentally killed 2 boys who were 2 years older than her at the time, during a mania induced episode. The boys were bullying and hitting her, saying some pretty fucked up stuff, it was until one of the boys reached for her clothes was when snapped. Punching the boy off of her, before starting to slam his head on a rock over and over. The other boy, too scared to intervene, but before he could run away, she ended up throwing a pretty hefty rock at his head. Killing both of them, and severely mentally scarring her. Thankfully for Korey, the murder wasn't pointed at her, but a violent halfblood who was roaming the woods. But still, even to this day the guilt still eats her from the inside.

Has very bad body dysmorphia, almost always refusing to look at her reflection, only looking when it's necessary. Has some magic potential, but it's not as big as her brother. She ued to have a best friend named Jay! They were oh so close, they might've even had a crush on each other, but even if they did, they wouldn't have reached a relationship as Jay was brutally killed by a halfblood, getting their guts ripped out as Korey could only helplessly watch. After it was done with Jay, Korey was also attacked by it, slitting her neck with its claws. But thankfully, was saved by a hunter nearby. Korey was about 13-14 at the time. It was also when she decided to join the hunters.

She was too hyperactive for the other village, sometimes insensitive by accident due to her disorders, leading her to be somewhat ignored by the village people. Fueling her fear of being ignored and forgotten.

-Noah 'Hathai' Adiel.

The youngest of the Adiels at 14 years old. To his siblings, Noah was practically the golden child despite only being treated normally, calling him that because they never got any care or acknowledgment.

Noah was..treated somewhat normally? It certainly wasn't as bad as the treatment his siblings got. He was actually born with synesthesia, an example is  you hear music, but you see shapes, or you hear a word or a name and instantly see a color. He's a very, very shy kid with barely any friends. Too anxious to approach anyone.

Despite his anxiety demeanor, he can be brave when he needs to be. After all, you aren't a true Adiel without a sense of bravery in you.

He's very clever for his age, and looks up to his siblings a lot, especially his sister. As they were both practically his teachers when it came to life. Korey would teach him to be less anxious, basic first aid, and how to defend himself. While Esra would teach him about more emotional feelings, basic education, and arts!

You can mostly always find him with his friend Everlynn and the other baby bugs! Or with one of his siblings goofing around the village.
