Aya and Walter met about two years after Lucien’s defeat. Walter was a mercenary at his very lowest, taking a hit job on Albion’s mighty Hero because he fully did not expect to survive the encounter. He figured that if he was going to die, he’d rather die fighting on his feet rather than drowning himself in a bottle. Because if he died at the hands of a Hero, maybe that would be a worthy death. Pointless, sure, but no more pointless than his life had been up to that point.

He tracked Aya down to a camp outside of Westcliff, except when he found her, he found himself looking at a dead woman walking. There was no will to live left in her, no purpose, no reason to go on living. She would have just let him walk up and take her head off, end of story. And he saw himself reflected in that.

When the balverines attacked, they fought to protect each other rather than themselves, and somehow, two very broken people found a reason to keep on living in each other.
