He’d come for Izuku's father, his crown and land, and all he has left now is this seed of enmity. "I yield," he lies. The first of many to come.

Anxiety grips him in a forceful chokehold as thousands pair of eyes in the crowd skewer him with their discontent. A warmth presence presses against his back and a low familiar tone says, "Fuck them, just sing."

Katsuki's words loosen the knot around his throat and he breathes.

Three.

"So will you?" he asks hopefully.

Katsuki stares at the ring box on the table. "Yea, I'll do it." The word leaves him unbidden. Empty.

Izuku's face lights up and he smiles, sweet and earnest. It's as devastating as his next words: "Thank you for accepting the best man title!"

Four.

"Just last year, your pro-hero career was in the gutter but you managed to reverse its course, so the question on everyone's tongue now is: what change?"

Katsuki glowers, looking past the interviewer and camera set to right at him. "Deku," he says, holding Izuku's steady gaze.

Five.

"—and I kicked Aya's butt in the rankings again!" She grins.

Daddy sighs deeply. "Enough. Say your goodbye."

Kasumi looks up and glares at him. "Fine." She turns back to Papa — 'Bakugou Izuku, Beloved Spouse and Devoted Papa' — engraved on the headstone. "See you next week!"

Six.

"H-hi," Izuku squeaks out breathlessly. "Nice catch."

Ground Zero's eyes narrow and his grip on Izuku tighten as they sail through the air. "I should have let you fall, you reckless fool," he growls menacingly.

"But you didn't," Izuku says, tucking a smile between his lips.

Seven.

Izuku stares up at Katsuki's future; the weathered face of a tired, old man from another life and time. "You're bleeding."

"Not mine," he say gruffly, and touches Izuku's cheek with a heartbreaking tenderness. "I won't let anyone hurt you." It's a promise and a threat in one.

Eight.

Katsuki places Izuku's crown on his head and steps back in a parody of a bow. "The world's stage awaits you, princess," he mocks with a familiarity of their childhood. "Don't fuck it up."

"And if I do?" Izuku asks, lips twitching.

"Then I'll fix it," he declares easily enough.

Nine.

As Izuku reaches for the buttons of Katsuki's suit jacket, a hand clenches down on him. He stops and looks up to meet Katsuki's glare. "K—" he pauses, then hastily corrects himself, "Master Katsuki?"

"Don't fucking call me that," he snaps, voice caught between anger and longing.

Ten.

Lips bruised and breathless, Izuku begs, "Again." Not fair, he thinks, for someone who'd sworn himself to God his contractor is a sinfully good kisser.

As if reading his mind, Katsuki smirks. "Needy little fuck, aren't ya?" he growls before pulling Izuku up against his cassock.

Eleven.

"You fucking useless, piece of overgrown cotton ball," Katsuki snarls down at the tiny green bunny held carefully in his palms. "This can only happen to you!"

Izuku's floppy ears twitch and he stares up at him with soulful, wide eyes that make Katsuki swear even harder. Fuck.

Twelve.

The arena roars as Katsuki's opponent lies lifeless at his feet.

"One more match and he'll be free," Momo says. "But is it his freedom he's fighting hard for or is it some other prize he's eyeing? What do you think, my prince?"

Izuku doesn't answer, hands clenching in his lap.

Thirteen.

"S-sorry, this is my first time. I don't know what I'm doing, um," Izuku says meekly. "Should I, uh, get on my knees and beg for my life?"

"Oh, for fuck's sake," the pirate growls, throwing him a disgusted look. "Just stay still before I reconsider this hostage situation."

Fourteen.

Izuku is yank awake from a dream full of imaginary monsters. He shifts uneasily, and then a hand slips around his waist. To his left is Katsuki's sleeping face, then, "Sleep," Shouto mumbles in his other ear, and so he does in the arms of the very real monsters he keep by his side.

Fifteen.

Red lips and kohl eyes drawn in a startling portrait of beauty. This sublime creature is alien to him, but Izuku picks up the skirt of his kimono and clumsily rushes forward. "K-Kacchan!" he says as intoxicating sweet as the boy in Katsuki's memories, and that's even more deadly.

Sixteen.

Katsuki tugs on the makeshift handkerchief dress over Izuku's tiny head as he valiantly struggles to fight him off. "Stop being a little bitch," he snaps, impatient.

"You made me a dress," Izuku whines.

"You're literally the size of my hand right now, so shut the fuck up."

Seventeen.

"Going cry?" He sneers. "Nobody is gonna come for you."

Izuku raises his throbbing head. "Did you make sure they're really dead?" A smile full of bite creeps across his face. "Because as long as there's a single breath in them, Kacchan and Shouto won't stop till they find me."

Eighteen.

"What the fuck is this?" he demands, narrowing his eyes.

Katsuki is a great man and an even better hero, but ten years is a long time to sleep next to an empty space and to remain at the side of a man who refuses to give Izuku his heart.

Izuku smiles thinly. "Divorce papers."

Nineteen.

"Your reward for the 300th wins at the coliseum, Bakugou. Use him well," the man says, shoving the courtesan into the cell before leaving them alone.

Katsuki glares at the cloaked figure as hands pull down the hood to reveal familiar green eyes hidden beneath it. "Kacchan."

Twenty.

"Stop crying already," he scolds. "You're going to ruin your suit before the wedding."

"But I'm so happy," Izuku sobs.

A knock at the door. "Izuku?"

"Shouto!" He lights up, and in that moment Katsuki wants tell him no, don't go, don't marry him, but his lips refuse to budge.

She was really comfy this morning.

Opening her eyes, Gula could hear the birds singing nearby and hear the rustle of the trees. The bed was warm and the sun was streaming into the room. There were footsteps here and there, but, for once, she didn’t have to hear the priests being noisy or the temple maidens doing their hammering stuff that they did at all hours of the day upstairs.

He seemed upset though. Looking at his face, Gula squirmed her way out of Ur’s grip, wrapping her arms carefully around her father and snuggling against him.

“But that’s okay, because Ur and I love you too.”

His laugh was nice, ringing in the room. His arms wrapped around her more, hoisting her up from the bed and carrying her towards the door.

“Where are we going?”

“I was intending to stay here with you and Ur until you both had awakened, but you have amused me. We should find Siduri and send her with a few soldiers to bring your ummum to the ziggurat.”

“Ummum will be in danger.”

“No,” her father smiled. “Do you not trust me? After our time together?”

“I trust you.”

“Then we shall send forth company to bring your ummum here. Meanwhile, your brother and you can both remain here with me.”

“Can we get Ur some food? He likes sweet foods and he eats a lot. I mean a LOT!” She waved her arms, showing him her brother’s big appetite. “He likes to eat meats too, which is why I was trying to catch him lots of fish with ummum and everyone, but um…”

Where were her fish?

Gula squirmed, beginning to try to climb free, but her father’s arms tightened.

“Abum-“

“They were given to the kitchen.”

“Oh.” Gula paused, looking up at him. “Did you read my mind?”

His face pressed against hers, kissing at her cheeks and squeezing her a little.

“Abum!”

“Siduri will wish to dote on you. As will the rest of the ziggurat.”

Was doting kindness?

She’d had everyone be nice to her here. Unlike Utu’s temple, the adults here were eager to see her, bowing low and telling her nice things about her abum or about herself. Even the maidens that had helped her bathe had been eager to tell her nice things.

Her father glanced down at her as they approached a set of doors nearby.

“Abum, can we do something nice for those inside the ziggurat?”

“What do you have in mind?”

“Food.”

He snorted, pressing his lips to her forehead this time. “I will see that the kitchens indulge everyone today.”

“Can I help?”

“You want to help cook?”

Her father had the door open somewhat, pausing to look at her.

“I can crack the eggs and I can help hold things and I can stir!”

She was very good at helping her ummum, but the other temple maidens…

“We will look into it later.” Her father finished pushing open the doors, setting her on her feet once more.

“Good morning, my king. Princess Gula.”

Ah, it was her again.

Gula beamed, hurrying forward to give her father’s helper a hug.

“Siduri!” Gula grinned, smiling up at her. “Abum says you are gonna go get ummum today! Can you ask her to wear her red dress? I want her to wear the same color as abum and I! It’s really important. Oh!”

She motioned for the woman to lean in.

“Also, can you tell her that Ur and I are really sorry for not telling her where we went? I don’t think Ur told her. He’s bad at being honest about trouble he does.”

“I-I will do so, little princess.” Siduri’s hand pat at her head lightly. “I’m sure she’ll forgive you immediately.”

FICTION

Glasgow Ghost Stories -- A young Glaswegian looks a little too closely during an encounter with a ghost, and is drawn irrevocably into the previously-invisible world of the dead who haunt the city’s streets. Haunting, moody, and beautiful.

LIMBO -- David is dead. Now he has to deal with what comes after. A more personal, philosophically-leaning concept of one person’s afterlife; also a very short self-contained miniseries (less than an hour long total). (You might know the creator, A.R. Olivieri, from any of the multitude of other podcasts he’s involved with -- 2298, Magic King Dom, Girl in Space, Janus Descending...)

Middle:Below -- Taylor Quinn is the only person who can open doors between the Middle (the land of the living) and the Below (where restless ghosts dwell). Heather is a woman who has somehow fallen into the realm of the dead. Gil is a ghost. Sans is a cat. And between the four of them, they’re going to have to fix the problems faced by the denizens of the Below. Bad things will happen. (That’s the show’s tagline, but it’s actually been rather sweet and funny so far.)

Gal Pals Present: Overkill -- When preteen medium Madison accidentally summons the ghost of 19-year-old murder victim Aya Valasquez at a Girl Scout camp, it’s up to Aya to finally figure out what exactly has trapped so many ghosts like her in Harding Park -- and why she was murdered there. Four words: sarcastic lesbian ghost narrator.

They Say a Lot of Things -- When a curious ghost hunter leaves her tape recorder in the legendarily-haunted mansion Arborwood Grove, resident ghost Caroline Carr takes the opportunity to tell the story of her life, her death, and the many lives she’s seen pass through her abandoned home over the years. Short, sweet, and lovely.

Death by Dying -- In the idyllic town of Crestfall, Idaho, people die. Often in bizarre and inexplicable ways. And when they do, it’s the job of the local Obituary Writer to tell the story of how it happened -- but in the process of finding out those stories, he is drawn into a much darker and more mysterious story of vanished homes, monsters in the deep woods, lonely hearts, haunted bicycles, and man-eating cats. Alternately hilarious and heartbreaking.

The London Necropolis Railway -- Barney is an unusually harried ghoul, an employee of the supernatural railway that removes the spirits of the newly deceased from London. Agnes is a stubborn private detective who was recently murdered in her office by a mysterious monster. And together, they’re going to have to dodge netherworld bureaucracy long enough to track down her killer -- before Agnes has to take her own train.

Wooden Overcoats -- Antisocial twin siblings Rudyard and Antigone Funn, with the help of their hypercompetent assistant Georgie and a mouse named Madeleine, have been running a funeral parlor on the tiny Channel island of Piffling for years. The secret to their success? It’s the only one. Or at least it was -- because Eric Chapman, who may or may not be the world’s most perfect man, has just opened up his own funeral parlor right across the square. Cue sitcom nemesis shenanigans and all the morbid black humor you could desire.

& Midnight Radio -- requisite egregious self-promotion! A woman who never expected to return to her hometown writes a letter to a long-dead radio host who never left it. But when she somehow receives an on-air reply, the two of them begin an unlikely correspondence that digs up long-buried questions about the meaning of home, the way our lives touch others, and what it means to be a ghost. Remember: all ghost stories are love stories. (This is a completed ten-episode miniseries, I promise it’s good, please listen to my podcast)

NONFICTION

Death in the Afternoon -- If literally anything on this list appeals to you, then you should go to Youtube right now and subscribe to Caitlyn Doughty’s channel, Ask A Mortician. Then you should buy her books. Then you should listen to this, her podcast, in which she and her colleagues Louise Hung and Sarah Chavez from The Order of the Good Death discuss death and how human beings have dealt with it, now and in the past, across the world. Their storytelling is fascinating, thoughtful, compassionate, and sometimes a lot funnier than you’d expect, especially when they’re talking about subjects like the man who had to sue to get back his own severed, mummified leg (he’d left it in a barbecue smoker in a storage unit; seriously, just listen to the podcast). This is quite probably my favorite nonfiction show and I am very excited for season 2 to come out in March. Highly recommended.

Spirits -- The inimitable Julia Schifini and Amanda McLoughlin, along with occasional guests, pour a drink and discuss legends, folklore, and mythology from around the world, including quite a few stories about death and the undead. But if you have even a passing interest in folklore, or just in content that is good, you should listen to this show. Everyone should listen to Spirits. That is my official recommendation.

Macabre London -- Exactly what it sounds like: interesting and obscure stories of the macabre and odd in the history of London. They’ve covered stories like the actual London Necropolis Railway (a real thing which carried dead bodies out of the city to new rural cemeteries), disastrous fires on the Underground, cholera epidemics, the sinking of the Princess Alice, and a wide variety of ghost stories.

The Marble Garden -- Rather than focusing on deaths, this podcast tells stories of the incredible lives of the obscure but extraordinary who have been buried in the cemeteries of Toronto. I love this show a lot for personal nostalgic reasons, but I also find it generally lovely and thoughtful and really interesting. My favorite episode is probably Episode 3, The Blackburns, but this is one of the few shows, fiction or nonfiction, that I’ve listened through multiple times.

It was no secret that Reggie didn’t like you. You were a Serpent after all. While his hostility has been toned a little he would still make comments every now and then. You were at your locker, grabbing your stuff for class, when you heard the squeaks of sneakers down the hallway. You groaned knowingly exactly who it was.

"Hey, Y/N, shouldn’t you be slithering off to class now?" Reggie asked, laughing with his friends as if it was the funniest thing ever and that you haven’t heard that before. You rolled your eyes before shutting your locker and turning to face him. Reggie's face fell when he saw you, saw the bruised cheek. You were quick to start walking away but he followed you, jogging to catch up with you. "Y/N, wait up!"

"What?!" You huffed, stopping in the middle of the hallway.

"Are you okay? What happened?" Reggie asked, full of concern.

"I’m fine. It’s nothing." You told him. "Why do you even care?"

"Because, you’re hurt, Y/N. Serpent or not, I care if someone is hurting you." He said.

"No one is hurting me." You hesitated before continuing. You were about to tell him something that not even your close friends know. "I was walking home last night and some Ghoulies jumped me. It’s not the first time and it won’t certainly be the last." You shrugged. Reggie was shocked by how nonchalant you were about it.

"Why are you so calm about it?"

"Because it’s normal. I’m a Serpent. I’ve automatically got a target on my back. I can’t say anything or do anything because then it’ll start a gang war." You told him. "I'm not expecting you to understand. We’re from different sides of the track. Thank you for your concern though." You said before walking away to go to class.

You thought that would be the end of that. What you didn’t expect was for Reggie to be standing in front of your locker at the end of the day. "Hey." He greeted, taking a step to the side to let you get into your locker.

"Can I help you?" You asked, wondering why he was talking to you twice in one day.

"I’m driving you home tonight." Reggie said causing you to burst out laughing, stopping once you realised that he wasn't kidding.

"You’re serious." He nodded. "You can’t just roll up to the south side in your fancy car, okay? I’ll be fine."

"It’s either that or you get beat up again, Y/N, and I can’t let that happen." Reggie said. "Just, please let me give you a ride. Even if it’s not to your house." He pleaded.

Y/N’s voice escaped her, her mind was clouded with so many thoughts of the boy she was in love with. He had been the one who had terriozed her friends. He even tortured his own friends!

“I am, Y/N. You have to believe me. I did all of those so we could be together,” Hongjoong pulled Y/N into his lap, nuzzling into her neck, “Please, I love you too much, I can’t let you go. Y/N, you have to stay.”

Y/N was so full of unwanted emotions, she just shut down, her tears stopping and her eyes blank. Hongjoong helped her stand up and walk over to the downstairs bedroom, falling onto the bed and pulling the blanket over them. Kissing Y/N’s lips, Hongjoong stroked her hair, twirling the berry colored strands as he looked at her with love in his eyes.

“I love you,” waiting for a response, he watched Y/N try to say something, her words failing her, opting to just snuggle into his arms, “are you not going to say it?”

Still silence.

“Princess, babygirl, darling, say it,” Hongjoong sat up, pulling Y/N with him, his face dropping with every passing minute, upset that Y/N hasn’t said anything.

“Say it.”

“Hongj-”

“Say it!” He stood up from the bed, throwing a lamp onto the floor, “Why won’t you say it?!”

Hongjoong ran out of the bedroom, going to the kitchen and slamming any dishes he could find on the floor, Y/N chasing after him, a shred of glass cutting her leg. Hongjoong saw the blood dripping from the wound, he fell to his knees, the glass cutting his legs as his aggressive tone changed into a sweet aura.

“Y/N baby, I’m so sorry, I could fix you, I can stop the bleeding,” Hongjoong darted to the bathroom, ravaging through the cabinets to find the first-aid kit, “I promise I’m coming!”

Coming back out, he had saw Y/N taking a seat, watching the blood dry on her leg. He squatted on the floor, opening the box of medical supplies and wiping off the red liquid from her skin. Kissing where the blood used to be, Hongjoong finally was eye-to-eye with the gash that dared blemish his perfect lover.

“This is going to sting a little bit,” He warned Y/N, but when he sprayed the wound with an antiseptic, nothing more than a little whimper came out of her lips.

“Let’s go to the couch, watch some TV.”

Hongjoong helped Y/N to the sofa in the living room, turning the TV on and watching Y/N fall asleep almost instantly, the girl curling up in a ball and her head resting on the armrest. Leaning in, he kissed her forehead, hoping for a response.

Still nothing.

Walking out of the living room to the kitchen and carrying the bags back into the car, slamming the trunk shut in frustration. When that was done, he walked back in, sitting on the couch and bringing Y/N over to him so she could rest her head in his lap. Whether it was desperation, drowsiness or the truth, Hongjoong was elated by the words that spilled out of Y/N’s mouth.

“I love you, too.”

“Right there!”

Yeosang pointed to the cabin, the GPS going off as Haeun and Jieun didn’t even wait for the car to stop to jump out and run to the house. The lights were off, except for the TV, there was no car and no other sign someone had been there. Haeun started to dig under the plants, the key nowhere to be found.

“I can’t find the key, it was right here,” Haeun grabbed her hair, clumping it together as she started to freak out.

“Oh, fuck this shit,” Jieun kicked the door open, the TV playing a DVD menu, the first-aid kit still out with blood on the floor.

“Oh my God, he di-”

“I don’t think he would’ve hurt Y/N, just those who stood between them,” Mingi cut off Yunho, Wooyoung and Jongho running up the stairs to see if there is any clues to Y/N or Hongjoong.

Haeun went to clean up the plate, Wooyoung stopping her before she could grab the first piece.

“I wouldn’t do that. He’s probably called the cops and they’re on their way to investigate.”

“Guys! I found something,” Yeosang found a piece of paper in the mailbox, the signature all too familiar with them.

I’m sorry for all of this. It was nothing meant to go this far. I just wanted Y/N so bad. It was supposed to stop at the stage, but I saw everything and heard everything and it triggered something inside of me.

I know you’re wondering, me and Y/N are fine, Y/N had a little accident with a plate, but other than that, she’s perfectly okay. But we won’t be in touch for a while, if at all anymore.

We’re happy together. I’m sorry that Bloom had to disband, but not for killing that Sanghee bitch. I’m sorry that I had to go after San, but not for pushing Seonghwa down those stairs, after all, he attacked me first.

yuki sohma is! a fuck boy! yuki is the boy who sends machi/kakeru/whoever tf late night “you up?” texts, who lightens the mood by saying “noo dont do x youre so sexy aha,” who is always down to fuck. he and machi watch titanic together; yuki is crying halfway through the movie but hes also being a slutty slutty boy together with machi. he wants machi to draw him like a french girl. with kakeru its a little less obvious because yuki would Rather Die than be caught screwing around with kakeru, but hes still the type to shut him up with a kiss, to avoid serious conversations by doing sexy stuff lmao. that being said, he is still a very emotional boy, and rather open with his feelings; he tends to intellectualize emotions (abby would say its his libra moon) but overall he is very sweet. he believes the only way to respect women is through pleasure and tbh can you blame him??

ayame sohma is an absolute sweetheart omg, tbh discord and i hc that he and mine have the fewest fights of any of the couples; they just exude that “perfect communication, perfect for each other” energy yknow? anyway aya has plenty of flair to spare and he spends a lot of it complimenting mine and making her feel like the most perfect and beautiful princess in the world. they both wear the dress on their wedding day and its gorgeous; theyre beautiful and soulmates and aya is very sweet.

kureno sohma is head over heels in love w his girl uo (if youre gonna fight me over kurenuo dont plz :P)! he’s the type to always assume that uo is doing fine because “shes much more capable with most things than he is” which is true! uo will call him and be upset about something or other and he’ll ask her if shes okay; when she explains whats going on and how shes wondering if she can’t handle....... whatever it is (college uo college uo head canon that actually instead of them travelling together immediately kureno went on his own and uo went to college but they still stayed pen pals anyway shes worried about not doing well in classes) he says something incredibly sweet along the lines of “well, of course you can handle this! you’re capable of everything” and she can tell he really really means it and it doesnt solve the problem but it does make her feel better, and reminds her that she is loved

shigure sohma, once things settle after canon, finally has the chance to spoil the girl he loves, and he does; actually, i think it negatively impacts the rest of his relationships for a while. he becomes completely subservient to akito for a while because he’s found his “happy ending,” so it’s okay to give into those feelings of wanting to spoil her now, right? she’s the most important person in his life, after all. anyway, that mindset lasts for a bit until suddenly it breaks bc akki isnt suddenly perfect either, shes still naturally jealous and afraid that he will leave her, that he’ll cheat on her, so they have a fight at some point; they spend some time apart where shigure learns that it’s okay to love his family and himself, on top of akki, and that being in love isnt about doing everything for the other person; meanwhile akki gets some therapy about her anxiety and rage issues and settles down enough to trust shigure. from then on he’s still very loving and spoiling, but he spends more time teasing her than before, and spends time discussing pros and cons of various couple decisions that they have to make.

hatori sohma is super super cute and super super awkward oml. he spends the early days of his relationship with mayu trying to be cool and impress her because shes so cool (!); he buys aviator sunglasses bc he heard they make people look cool and mysterious and his lactose intolerant ass will go on ice cream dates with mayu which doesnt always.... end well lmaooo. hes very protective of her, perhaps a bit overbearing when she’s sick or injured especially, but it’s always very clear that his heart is full of love for his girl, that he loves her to bits.

hatsuharu sohma has big dick energy  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) now that thats out of the way: if anyone on this list was gonna tease his girl its haru, oml. haru spends 99% of his day finding new and exciting ways to annoy rin cause he thinks shes cute when she’s annoyed (she is) and because hes very confident that they’ll be together forever p much no matter what (they will be). the other 1% of the day is being the sweetest guy in the world bc thats just haru, he tells rin that shes beautiful, that she’s the only girl for him, that its just facts that they would be together, and then the 1% is up and hes explaining that its bc “who else has this goth energy” and “anyway i like your tits” but! its still sweet, even though he’s annoying.

momiji sohma is a cutie! but he’s also a little shit sometimes. he’d rather be a little shit to the rest of the world, with kimi, than to her specifically though; the two of them are dramatic little shits who stage fake arguments, uncomfortable couple dynamics, overly slutty relationships, etc for the specific purpose of the Drama TM of it all. they also like to play up traditional “male and female, husband and wife” roles to the point of satire, because they think it’s funny to point out how ridiculous it is to be such stilted characters together; unfortunately, however, no one around them pays enough attention socially to figure any of it out :( but! it doesnt matter bc for the most part theyre just starting drama and making each other laugh, so its good :).

hiro sohma is v v v sweet and protective; when he gets a little older he joins the “respect women at all costs” gang with kyo, hatori, kureno, and ayame (vs the “respect women through sex” gang with yuki, shigure, haru, and momiji); he’s a bit of a shit about it bc its hiro but its very sweet! anybody comes and bothers kisa and he’s on their ass about how you can’t treat girls that way blah blah blah hiros v talkative lmao. anyway he’s cute moving on.

kyo sohma (bc i like making kyo stans wait til the end to get their man >:P) is completely obsessed with doin right by his girl. he loves tohru to bits (he’s never ever loved anyone else either, man is a tohrusexual through and through) and honestly its a little overbearing sometimes here too lmao. hc that during the v stressful time when theyre planning their wedding (and tohru is pregnant haha) kyo does his whole “let me do everything for you are you sure you should be doing that in your condition? get some rest i can do this for you also fuck anybody coming to bother her with anything yall are assholes” thing--which, normally tohru thinks is cute n sweet tbh (cause it kinda is) but when shes stressed out of her mind, hormonal, and annoyed w herself for not being able to do as much as she normally can? she gets a little snippy with him sometimes :) however its just a learning experience for them kyo eventually gets better at reading the mood and they live happily ever after forever

So wow, this took me all evening to do. I knew it was going to be time consuming, but W O W. I had meant to do the writeup for Y5 19 today. OH WELL. I’d like to say, first off, these aren’t necessarily my top 9 absolute favorite dances in the series. I’d have to do a lot of soul-searching for that. Rather, it’s a few of my favorites (H@ppy Together, Magic a la Domo, and Precure Memory are high up there) and a balance of songs/dances from all over the series that I feel showcase it well. I put EVERY SINGLE DANCE ENDING (including movies) in a playlist and watched through them to make this, that’s over an hour of real time, and then I slowly removed videos until I was satisfied with my nine. Tomorrow I could do this again and probably come up with some other answers but, hey, that’s the fun. Never say I don’t love what I do. I’ll go over a few of my choices chronologically:

Ganbalance de Dance. Obviously Splash Star did it first, and before that there were a few dancing scenes in the Max Heart ending, but I liked Yes 5′s version the most of the three renditions of Ganbalance de Dance. There’s a bit where they’re shown only in silhouette and that’s really cool. Since it’s 2D animation, it’s harder to animate them moving around as you have to draw their new perspective rather than rotating a 3D model, and so the dance is a little stiff, but it’s fun and the song is catchy. These were the formative years of dance endings.

Fresh was the first show to use CG dance endings and they’ve stuck around ever since then. The first ending, “You Make Me Happy”, is a pretty dull song and a dull dance, but “H@ppy Together” is nice. Since FPC is their first time working with CG, the models aren’t great and the rigging and animation are stiff, but H@ppy Together takes advantage of this by making them figurines in a music box, which is good enough to mask their expressionless faces most of the time. Also it’s just a cute theme.

Honorable mention to Heartcatch here for using multiple models for each girl and translating Umakoshi’s designs to 3D. Really catchy songs, I just couldn’t fit them on this list. Instead, you get DX2, which comes up with new dances for each team to dance along with their opening theme, as well as the All Stars theme all mashed together in a medley. Although they technically were shown dancing a little bit in GoGo Dream Live, this is the first time all cures are together in a CG dance, and that’s a technical achievement. They jump all over the place, standing on floating platforms and bouncing off the walls and stage. The models are still kind of stiff but just seeing then-all 17 cures interacting with each other like that is incredible.

Suite managed to improve the animation a little bit, I really like the floating setting for this ending. It’s a fun, poppy, bop of an ending and it features Cure Muse, finally.

Smile features a VAST improvement on the animation, especially in their faces, but I wound up using the New Stage variant of the song because I liked seeing how they made all the older cures dance to the song. There were some great effects with the castle stage.

HappinessCharge. They use assets for each of their three forms, and the texturing on the hilltop at the end is really good, but what makes this ending especially notable to me is the lighting. When they’re dancing in the sunset and they’re cast in shades of orange, it’s really incredible. I HAD to include it. I also wanted to include the movie ending where it’s just the same thing as the second ED but instead of ending they jump out of a fucking blimp and land in a stadium as Lovely transforms into her movie super form and they sing another verse.... but sunset was more visually impressive and commendable.

Princess. Aside from being a good jam, the backgrounds are very ornate. The models used for the girls are very detailed, I think they tweaked the rendering engine again or something. I really love the bit when they transform into Mode Elegant.

Maho Girls is here because, wow that song is a BOP. The lyrics are laughable but the animation is very bouncy and cute and Mofurun even dances as well. I enjoy that it was sung by the actresses. Kirakira is here for a similar reason. I dig the choreography, and that opening bit where Whip is shaking her hips to the beat is cute. Each girl gets a moment in the spotlight and there’s some cool visual effects. It’s not the best song and sometimes I think I like the first ending better but it’s distinct enough to warrant being on this list.

Shout out to Star Twinkle ending 2 for being super duper weird though.

The PRxPRince Experience

It’s been nearly five months so it’s high time I finally wrote up my review ^^; In April of this year I had the pleasure to see Machida Nanoka’s directorial debut show, PRxPRince. This show was also the first solo lead for Snow Troupe’s Towaki Sea (Hitoko). As this was the first bow hall show I have seen the theatre is much smaller than the Grand Theatres with no balcony and holds a little over 500 people. 

The intimacy of the show is doubled with the cast of 30 people who all get to shine during the show. There are enough additional scenes for everyone in the cast to play important roles and it also showcases a lot of the younger actresses as well. 

All bias aside, PRxPRince is a fantastic show and is possibly my favorite Takarazuka show that I have seen yet. With the combined powers of Machida sensei’s writing and Hitoko’s sensual charm onstage they somehow created a show that is both very fun and extremely lethal. Before the show premiered just from the interviews it was evident that Machida sensei knew exactly what she was doing. She had been a fan of Takarazuka for a number of years and it shows in the final result. 

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

The show opens with the three ministers of Pecchieno, the Genovia-like country in which the story takes place, who are trying to figure out a way to get the country out of financial difficulties. Caspar (Kanou Yuuri) and Elias (Ichika Ao) have very different views on how to go about this dilemma with Caspar being very old-fashioned and Elias being a Millennial and very social media savvy. Damian (Yume Maoto) is kind of the moderator between them and the one who ends up suggesting the ultimate way to solve the country’s issues (which will be revealed later on). 

The next scene is a PR campaign video that introduces Victor (Hitoko), the oldest prince of Pecchieno as well as his two younger brothers, Valentin (Aya Ouka) and Valtteri (Ayami Sera). The opening song “Welcome to Pecchieno” is one of the catchiest songs in the show and gets reprised later on, inevitably becoming an earworm for anyone who hears it. What should be noted about the opening is that Victor’s glasses are removed before the start of the PR campaign video so Hitoko’s blue contact lenses and smooth blonde hair are on full display. And it is truly devastating! (Sidenote: I had no idea that the intro song actually introduces the rest of the cast who come onstage briefly until my last time seeing the show because I had my opera glasses focused on Hitoko for the other 6).

The next time we see Victor he is dressed in a parka, tennis shoes, a lab coat, and has large round glasses and messy hair. Victor is the leader of a group of scientists whose goal it is to find a solution to the polluting problems from the neighboring country (though this plotline might have changed since the director’s talk cause there was probably something I missed but I tried my best to follow along with the laboratory scenes). Elle (Jun Hana) is one of the scientists who really likes Victor and Victor really likes her. They are very adorable and awkward together. They are also both incredibly intelligent. Elle is seen as very smart but also fierce and is not one you want to mess with (she does Karate poses).

During another PR campaign tactic the princes are literally being mobbed by fangirls (listed as Fangirl 1-6 in the program) in order to promote tourism. At one point during a struggle Victor’s glasses fall off and he falls to the ground. He then emits a very unsumire moan. Suddenly, the lights change to a vivid bright green and music starts. Victor lifts up his head but his entire demeanor has changed. It is revealed during this song that this is in fact Christopher and he is searching for his goddess. The awkward prince Victor is replaced by Christopher, a very handsome, cocky, and aggressive version who makes every girl around him fall to the ground in delight. This reveal was so secret during the press for PRxPRince before I saw the show that I knew that Hitoko would be both extremely kawaii and extremely ikemen but I didn’t realize that Victor would change into a completely different person!

Through a flashback scene told by Alice (Sahana Mako), the family’s nurse, it is revealed that because Victor was just TOO BEAUTIFUL and maids had to flee the room because they just couldn’t handle it, a hypnotist is brought in to put a spell on Victor that allows his ikemen side to stay hidden when he has the glasses on. However, the side effect is that when the glasses get removed his ikemen side is so extra and over the top that he is literally a completely different person. In the show there are two songs that feature Victor and his Shadow which is the other side of him. The Shadow (Houka Haruna) is distant for the first song and represents Christopher behind him in the background. The second song is started by Christopher and the Shadow comes out wearing glasses. In the middle of the song the Shadow puts the glasses on Christopher. When he turns around he is once again Victor. The glasses are then removed completely and they have a duet dance together. The transitions from one to the other are incredible and it shows off Hitoko’s acting skills in the best possible way. It isn’t just the glasses that make the change. As Victor, Hitoko speaks and sings in a higher register that is closer to her natural speaking voice, she stutters more, her posture is often bent forward, has more outbursts and exclamations and is also portrayed as very sensitive. As Christopher, Hitoko is in full dangerous otokoyaku-killing mode; her speaking and singing voice is deeper, her posture is straight, she is more confident, aggressive, and controlling. Christopher also speaks in a very old-fashioned way and gives off an air as otherworldly in many ways. Another neat thing is that Victor addresses himself as “Boku” and addresses Elle as “Elle-san”. Christopher uses “Ore” when referring to himself and just says “Elle”. 

Elle faces a crisis at one point when Christopher tries to make a move and she slaps him. She immediately panics when she thinks that she has hurt Victor though and tries to figure out what happened to her sweet awkward boyfriend. Her and Victor sing a duet towards the audience in separate rooms. The song is later reprised after Victor admits that he likes Elle and they sing it to each other in a very tender moment. Jun Hana has a very Disney princess vibe to her which is exemplified whenever she’s around Hitoko who has an equally Disney prince vibe. They are characters who could literally be in a shoujo manga. While Jun Hana does not have the strongest singing voice per se, she makes it work here. 

Victor’s brothers, Valentin and Valterri are also rather amusing to watch. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed watching Aya’s performance as Valentin. She was VERY extra. Valentin is a true narcissist and has long flowing locks. He also tends to play with the ends of his hair and is the MOST dramatic person I have ever seen. He pines after a girl he once knew called Diana and throughout the show tries to pursue a girl of the same name played by Seina Nozomi who he’s convinced is the same one he once loved. Valterri is the youngest brother and is obsessed with working out. He’s very impulsive and doesn’t really think things through which gets him in trouble later on (Victor and Valentin silently scold him at one point which is funny since both of them are using big gestures on the side of the stage while other characters are talking). He is also head over heels in love with Marie (Irodori Michiru), the sister of the rival country’s ruler, Queen Lily (Ai Sumire). Ayami Sera did a really good job at playing the bratty younger brother who just wants to have fun. This was probably her biggest role to date so far too so she got to show off her singing as well. 

Speaking of Ai Sumire I need to talk about her because she was one of the most phenomenal parts of this show! She is portrayed as a campy villain with a very extra evil laugh. But DANG the girl has the most powerful voice and even gets the only vocal song in the finale! Catch me singing “IKEMEN! I-KE-MEN!” constantly. Lily is almost always surrounded by her posse made up of Rose (Shouno Chio) who is more or less her secretary who always carries an iPad with her to let Queen Lily know about the latest thing that their neighboring country is up to and Garrett (Kiraha Reo) who is Lily’s erm...really hot boytoy/bodyguard? What was quite surprising for me the first time I saw it was that Garrett does not speak AT ALL in the show. He whispers behind his hands to Lily but other than that he is completely silent and yet, the way that Kiraha (Kari) presents herself onstage even without saying a word is mesmerizing to watch. She just emits the most brooding otokoyaku energy that is mostly reserved for kuroenbis in revues. Garrett smokes, casually checks his watch, and performs a tango with Lily and I cannot stop LOOKING AT HIM ONSTAGE! Even when other characters are talking onstage if Garrett is there (save for when Victor is present) my eyes would float over to him just to watch him stare into the ether and make the slowest and most deliberate of gestures. 

Of course, no true royal comedy would happen without the king and queen themselves. King Anselm (Souno Haruto) and Queen Beatrice (Maisaki Rin) are the parents of the V3 (the campaign name for the three hot princes). King Anselm is very attached to everything he owns especially his expensive collection of various artifacts. Queen Beatrice is just trying to have a nice time and wants everyone to be happy again. They are also IMMENSELY in love and get very lovey-dovey in front of their boys who are all grossed out by their displays of affection. Given that the two actresses are also classmates they play off of each other really well and have a very nice relationship that is enhanced through that. They play an important role to the story and Maisaki Rin (Hime) even gets a moment of adlibbing. 

One of the great things about PRxPRince was actually the amount of adlibs that were included with each performance. There are several moments in the script where adlibs occur for each performance, similar in the way of the adlibs in shows like Lupin III and Bakumatsu Taiyouden occur. Even though you can tell these adlibs are planned out somewhat in advance it’s nice to see the actresses work with things that are also on the spot sometimes since not everything is completely planned out. Some were funnier than others but that’s all part of the fun of the show and just finding a good balance with the audience. Personally I loved the adlibs even though I couldn’t understand some of them sometimes. Other things that were adlibbed were little gestures here and there that the characters would do that were different with each performance. One of my favorites was watching Kari scold Michiru at one point and one performance Kari leaned over Michiru so much that Michiru’s tiara had bounced back onto her head as she came up. The adlibs definitely made each performance I saw unique and lots of fun especially when the show was in the middle of Japan’s naming for the new era and suddenly 平成 (Heisei) and 令和 (Reiwa) adlibs were added to the mix. 

As the ministers figure out the next part in the V3 PR campaign Damian suggests that they host a ball in order to find eligible matches for the princes. A lot of stuff goes down in Act 2 during the ball including Marie showing off her pet bug to literally everyone within range, Elle finding said bug and actually communicating with it, Garrett and Rose playing musical instruments, Valentin doing a slow baywatch walk, and Victor expressing his true feelings towards Elle. At the very end of the show Victor and Elle actually go into the audience to do high-touches with those lucky to be on the aisle seats (alas, I was not one of them). One of the best moments was from the final performance when Top Stars Nozomi Fuuto and Maya Kiho were in the audience and I was able to see Hitoko shake both of their hands in a very sincere gesture since she was so happy both of them could make it to the show. 

I talked a bit about the music before but OH MY GOD this show’s music is incredible! It’s very catchy and pleasing to the ear. A lot of the songs are slightly reminiscent of older Takarazuka shows but are also not too old-fashioned sounding. A lot of brass and strings are used in the songs which is very enjoyable. The finale takes it one step further though and incorporates electric guitar. 

Yes, I am going to spend an entire paragraph just on the finale because it deserves to be talked about. After the happy ending of the show intense rock music is played as the curtain rises to three figures: Ai Sumire, Kari, and Shouno Chio. A rock version of “Lily’s Song” is played and it is THE BEST THING EVER! After my first viewing I always looked forward to the finale because it starts off super strong and doesn’t disappoint. Ai Sumire is the only one who gets to sing in the finale which is appropriate considering her voice is amazing and is one of the best singers in Yukigumi imo (Daikiho aside, of course). After the villainous trio have their number Hitoko sneakily walks onstage to stand on a platform. She is dressed in a dark blue coat with gold trim and a silk wine red shirt on beneath it. Her blonde wig stays on for the entire time. An instrumental rendition of “Two souls” is played as she descends the stairs, dancing fluidly and gracefully like a swan and takes front and center. The “fuu!” that emits from her lips is enough to make the audience shatter into 1000 pieces. They have fallen under their prince’s spell with the lure of Hitoko’s sanpakugan (this was so effective I was unable to watch this part of the finale with the opera glasses because it was THAT powerful). The rest of the otokoyaku join her shortly afterwards in a dance which evolves into an instrumental “Diana” as Hitoko takes off to change into her next costume while Ayana leads. After the otokoyaku dance they scatter and the musumeyaku all appear in lovely pink dresses. Hitoko has changed into a Prince Charming white military uniform and dances in the center, surrounded by beautiful women, which honestly, the dream. A shift in the music starts and one by one the ladies leave the stage until there is one remaining. But even SHE isn’t the goddess that our prince seeks. Jun Hana makes her way onto a small platform in a gold ball gown similar in style to Belle’s from Beauty and the Beast. When Hitoko turns around and sees her it’s like a wave of happiness rolls through them both and they have a classic waltz set to an instrumental version of “Someday My Prince Will Come” from Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is canonically one of the purest moments in the entire show even though the entire time I watched it I prayed that Hitoko would not trip over Jun Hana’s massive ballgown. The only mishap I saw was on the first day when while twirling Jun Hana to the side she slipped ever so slightly but managed to catch herself gracefully. After their intimate dance they exit together and the curtain call rolls. 

This show brought together so many hearts and it was so refreshing to see Yukigumi do a comedy bow hall since it has not been done since the early 2000s. I love this show more than I have loved any Takarazuka show and I feel blessed that I was able to see it live as many times as I did and to be able to share this wonderful experience with others.
