“What’s wrong with you?  Haven’t you ever seen a bonsai before?” He poked his head out of the door.

“Only in books,” Nina confessed with a smile.  “But even the ones I’ve seen there don’t look like this one.”

He frowned, but she continued.

“I can tell it’s happy.  You’ve done a fine job helping it grow and it’s thanking you with those flowers.”

A small smile formed on his lips.  “W-Well… I try.  Growing them isn’t easy.”

Nina’s grin was carefree as she extended her hands out to him. “Show me your others!  I can see them through the window, and I want to get a close up look!”

He wanted to laugh at this foolish young woman who hadn’t even introduced herself, yet was demanding to see the inside of his house. Still, there was a warmth about her that left him at peace.  He took one hand and shook it.  “My name’s Galen.  You live next door, don’t you?  The neighbors had mentioned someone new had moved in.”

She nodded.  “I’m Nina!  Back at home, I worked with flowers all the time… although I guess home is right beside you, now,” she realized with a jolt her sudden independence.

Snow Days are the Best

You shivered. This was your first real winter outside the city, and you didn’t realize how different it could be. Untouched snow replaced the pathways cleared by plows or sanded and salted to provide traction. You enjoyed the light crunch of snow beneath your boots at first. Then, you hit a patch of ice beneath the powdery white layer near the water spigot. The prolonged contact with the snow was slowly numbing the sharp sting in your rear from where you met the ground. You scrambled to your feet as quickly as you could while avoiding where you thought there could still be ice lying in wait. Your frustrated huff rose before you in a white cloud, encouraging you to hurry and finish your work. 

Caring for the animals wasn’t much different than the rest of the year. Snow days were a lot like rainy days, you decided. The animals would probably be fine out in the cold, like when wet, but it felt rude. You generously heaped more fodder into the last food bin as a treat for remaining indoors. The sheep whose bin you filled bleated his thanks as his head bumped into your leg, demanding attention. You paused to rub your face in his soft wool coat, wishing you could stay and disappear into this warmth. But the crops still needed your attention. 

You braced for the sweeping chill outside as you slipped from the barn and hurried to your field. Brave sprouts struggled to stand upright against the snow layered over them. You soon realized you needed new gloves. The ones you had, while great at preventing blisters, allowed the snow to soak through. Your hands stung, screaming their protest. If you could finish the last half of the field, the rest of your day could be spent indoors. 

One final gentle brush of your hand removed the last specks of snow from your crops. Curling your fingers sent shards of pain through your hands. Not taking a break to warm your hands and pushing ahead was probably a mistake you realized. Your rush to enter your home and remove the soaked gloves caused you to miss your visitor at first. It wasn’t until you had undone your bottoms to slip out into something dry and warm that the sharp sound of a throat being cleared alerted you to another. 

“Daryl? What are you doing here?” you questioned, taking note of the haphazard scientist’s flushed face. 

“When you didn’t arrive at the lab at 12:30 as usual, I figured you were overworking yourself. And I, of course, was correct in my hypothesis. You do realize this is the first sign of frostbite?” 

You numbly nodded as Daryl’s hand raised your own to your face. Your fingers' bright, red, angry tips were the furthest thing from your mind. You had always thought Daryl’s hands would be cold like his freezing lab. Instead, they were warm. An eyebrow of his cocked at your silence, sending a pleasant rush of heat traveling from your cheeks down your neck. 

“S-sorry,” you sheepishly mumbled. 

Daryl sighed, dropping your hand and leaving it colder than before as he turned his back to you. “You should change into something dry before you catch hypothermia. I’ll keep my back turned until you are done,” Daryl chided as he shuffled through your small kitchen.

Hurriedly, you stripped and yanked on new clothing before gathering all the pillows and blankets you owned. You had just finished arranging the pillows as the tea kettle shrieked. Stepping across the blankets, you cozied up to the counter to see what Daryl was making. 

“Wait! What are you doing?” you exclaimed as he added salt to the steaming mugs of hot chocolate. 

“Salt enhances the natural taste of the chocolate. It won’t affect the taste otherwise since it’s minimal,” Daryl sniffed, clearly offended that you dared question him. “What is this mess?”

“It’s a pallet! The best way to relax and watch TV on a lazy day.” 

“Hmmm, that remains to be seen.” 

“I could say the same about your salt,” you muttered as you settled beside Daryl. 

You cradled the mug lightly between your hands, enjoying the smell of chocolate wafting lightly into the air. You cautiously lifted the cup to your lips, taking a cautious sip before an appreciative hum escaped. The hot chocolate was probably some of the best you’d ever had. Your compliments died on the tip of your tongue as you turned to tell Daryl and saw his smirk. He knew he was right, yet again. Finishing your drink, you yawned, vowing to wipe the smugness from his face someday. You abandoned your empty mug to the side and snuggled deeper into the warmth of the blankets and Daryl’s side. Your eyes drooped as you leaned your head on his shoulder, struggling to watch the cheesy romance on the television. 

You could suffer a hundred snow days if they all ended in the warmth you currently felt as you drifted to sleep.

I hit chapter 2 of Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life and... I forgot that Gary has to deal with the grief of his wife dying. And this time it hit EXTRA hard because I get him now... that almost happened to me. He's so heart broken, it gets to me.

HM/SOS OC Update

!! Please read my links / carrd before interacting !

DISCLAIMER: This is not supposed to be canon! It's all fanon and just for fun.

I've mentioned a Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons + P.okemon AU in the past, but for now I kinda want to just focus on HM/SOS. I might have another crossover AU which includes Stardew Valley, since in some HM/SOS games characters can come from other canon towns or make cameos. I wanted to make this post because SoS: AWL comes out right before my birthday.

As I mentioned before, my self insert's name is Cherrie (or Berrie in SoS: FoMT), she has pink hair (or red in 64, BtN/FoMT, and MM), green eyes, and her birthday is either Summer 1 (BtN/FoMT, AWL, DS) or Summer 2 (MM, SOS 3DS). The basic story for her is that like most of the protagonists, she originally comes from the city, but was looking for a job. She decides to move to her family's farm to try growing crops and cooking various dishes.

One idea I have is like how there are multiple versions of canon characters in some of the games, there are also multiple versions of Cherrie in each story. In 64 and BtN/FoMT she marries Rick, in AWL she marries Rock, in DS she marries both Rock and Skye (And possibly Rick again), in MM she marries Dan, and in SoS 3DS she marries Nadi. This follows a sort of timeline where each story is slightly different.

Another idea I have is that the farm she moves in to is surrounded by multiple villages, similar to Tale of Two Towns or Trio of Towns. The villages are of course Forget-Me-Not Valley, Mineral Town, Flowerbud Village, and Oak Tree Town. Certain characters who share similarities or roles are the same character; Ann/Ran, Ellen/Elli, Maria/Mary, Nina/Popuri, Alex/Doctor, Ray/Cliff, and Blue/Gray. Cherrie travels through each of the towns to shop as well as get to know everyone.

Day 3: Community

I opted to draw Forget-Me-Not Valley for this prompt because….I mean what a FUN and eclectic array of characters AWL and AnWL brought us. Feels like a town full of outcasts and misfits, and I sure did LOVE playing through that setting as a kiddo, I tell ya what. 😂

If I wasn’t rushing out a drawing or two a day, I think I would have opted to include more of the AnWL characters. There are so many good ones. ;w; I love that weird little community so much.

(I’m…defo vying for a remake of either AnWL or ToT. PLS.)

In light of the new cottage living pack I decided to fill the lots with my recreations of Forget me not Village from the game Harvestmoon A wonderful life. I loved this game growing up, it inspired me. Video games have always been a huge outlet for me and harvest moon let me explore game mechanics I had never experienced. Farming, Ranching, mining, foraging, cooking, fishing and relationships!! It set a bar. Gave a real look at aging that my 12 year old brain was just absorbing all the understanding of life and death, friendship and love. The bonds that create the memories of the lives we are living. Raising our children and understanding their growth their dreams and aspirations. Caring for a partner and a farming business and the animals you are responsible for. God this game was endless fun and its still my go to for inspiration.

no one asked for this and I’m sure none of my followers care but here’s my opinions on the AWL remake character designs that that been revealed so far

First of all. I’m so fucking pumped for it.

I’ve never played AWL but I played the shit out of HMDS and HMDS cute so I love the Forget-Me-Not Valley folks. HMDS was actually my first harvest moon game so I have a lot of nostalgia for the setting and characters. It’s been too long since we’ve seen them and I’m so happy they’re back.

Okay. Here we go.

Nina

She looks the same! She’s so cute as always. I love Nina, her design is literally perfect I would not change a thing, peak character design right here. 10/10

Vesta

Her apron is gone! And she’s wearing a vest! Maybe I’m biased because I LOVE vesta, but I think she looks great. I do think it’s interesting they yass-ified cody, but Vesta didn’t get the same treatment. Not that it’s a bad thing, in fact I’d prefer it if Cody kept his old design. But it goes to show that strong, masculine characters do fit with the new Story of Seasons art style, so I’m not sure why Cody’s a twink now. More on him later though. 10/10

Chris

PANTS! While I do miss her pencil skirt, the pantsuit is cute. I love her tie. Chris reminds me a lot of my mom (they even have the same name) and she dresses just like her. Which is weird because they have totally different jobs. iirc, chris is a sports reporter/commentator which I think she conveys a lot more in the new design than the old one. She looks more athletic while still looking very professional. Her old design was more like a secretary or office worker or teacher. 10/10

Wally

HE’S WEARING SOME TIGHT ASS PANTS. And for what? I mean, they’re probably more practical to run in, but geez it’s funny to me. He’s rocking them though, can’t complain. 9/10

Hugh

Okay, this is the first design choice so far I take issue with. He’s wearing the same clothes as his old design, but something is off. Hugh was a lot chubbier in his older design. I miss his baby fat :( it was cute! And it also gave him a little bit more character, almost like he’s working out all the time to get slim like his dad. I miss his clumsy, dopey look. 6/10

Galen

This is another one I have a problem with. He looks exactly the same, which is fine. But they toned down cartoonish aspects of all the other characters (Marlin’s hunch, Gustafa’a nose) and didn’t do this with Galen. He looks extremely out of place. I think the best choice with him would be to give him a more realistic head shape and nose, just so he could fit in standing next to everyone else. He seriously looks like he walked out of a completely different video game. This wasn’t a problem in the original since everyone else looked super stylized then, too, but now he sticks out like a sore thumb. 4/10

Mukumuku

They gave him a bow :) I love it, literally perfect. He is an angel, I’m obsessed. I love his cute little bow. 11/10

Marlin

I like Marlin’s redesign! I always thought the Elvis look was charming, and Marlin was my bachelor of choice in HMDS cute because I thought he was so handsome. I like that they kept his grumpy resting face and his weirdly shaped eyebrows. I also like that he’s still got a hunch, but it’s less stylized and more realistic now. He looks more put together now, which I like, while still looking like he could be a farmer. My only complaint (and it’s a pretty big one) is… WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS CURLY HAIR. Why did they do him like that? I loved his curls!!! And now it’s brown instead of black?? That’s so weird to me. Mainly though it’s the curls. I miss his curls. Give him his curls back. Please, god. 7/10

Muffy

Muffy looks the same, except for some minor detailing on her dress. I always thought her original design kinda looked like she was wearing lingerie, LMFAO. I mean look at it, that’s a slip from Victoria’s Secret.

The new dress is a welcome change, and the cardigan she’s wearing looks more comfortable. I really REALLY like her new design. Muffy was my bachelorette of choice in HMDS, so again, maybe I’m biased. 10/10

Lumina

Well, she definitely looks older and more age appropriate. I do think it’s interesting they went with her child design as her initial look rather than her dress. If it was my choice, I would have started her in her dress and completely gotten rid of the school-uniform-looking outfit she starts the game in. It’s just a weird decision to me, but like I said, she still looks older now. 9/10

Nami

I’m gay. I love women. That’s all.

Okay but for real I’m so glad they got rid of her vest. It was SO UGLY, I hated it so much. She is so cute in the redesign. I think she looks so much better now. 11/10

Rock

I really like Rock’s redesign! The new art style really suits him. He didn’t change much clothing-wise (though I do like that his pants come in at the legs now) but I think he looks so much better with more realistic body proportions. I love it! Wouldn’t change a thing. 10/10

Gustafa

I… REALLY LIKE IT. I know I’m in the minority here but I LOVE his redesign. He is so cute. I think a lot of people dislike it because he looks so different in this art style, but really, his key features are the same. He’s wearing the same clothes, has the same hair, same face, etc. The only thing that’s really MISSING is his beard, witch hat, and his giant nose. He still has a pretty big nose, but now it’s, like, actually human sized. I can understand getting upset that he’s missing his beard, but I think he looks charming with stubble. Also, I like his bucket hat a lot. Honestly I love this redesign so much, I think it’s my favorite. If you ask me, this is how you redesign a character. 14/10

The Farm in Forgotten Valley

These are just my headcannons for who would play what role in an AWL meets The Cabin in the Woods work. After each category of characters, I'll provide notes or a breakdown of my thoughts. It's been about a year since I last watched the movie, so I might be off on some things. I'd appreciate any other views or ideas, especially when I couldn't decide on a person.

SACRIFICES

The Athlete: Cody/Gordy

The Virgin: Pony/Mark, Lumina, or Rock

The Scholar: Nami or Marlin/Matthew

The Whore: Muffy/Molly

The Fool: Gustafa or Rock

Cody/Gordy from the marriage candidates is the only one who could be The Athlete. Curt in the film also did his best to protect the whole group once danger presented itself and I feel Cody/Gordy would fit that best.

Pony/Mark as the The Virgin. This is because Dana seemed to be a driving force in the movie. So, having the player character Pony/Mark assume that role makes sense. But I could also really see Lumina or Rock as a Final Girl, too, though. He'd choose what's killing the group by messing with an item before everyone else could look around.

To be honest, Holden/The Scholar role didn't make an impression on me in the movie. He was sweet but lackluster compared to the others. The Scholar role seems best suited for Nami or Marlin/Matthew. Both keep to themselves but seem like they would be the logical voice of reason to offer a course of action. Nami wouldn't support splitting up. Marlin/Matthew might if he got to be with Celia/Cecilia.

I really hate the title of The Whore role, but Muffy/Molly was the best fit. Please hear me out. From what the movie shows, before the facility staff really starts affecting everyone, Jules seemed a well-intentioned mom friend for the group. I don't know about you, but Muffy/Molly best fits an outgoing but caring role from the bachelor/ettes. Celia/Cecilia would fit as a mom friend and nurturing role, but I feel like Muffy/Molly was an overall better fit.

First, Marty/The Fool was the best part of The Cabin in the Woods, and I will die on that hill. Gustafa in the role has nothing/very little to do with the marijuana jokes surrounding his character. The Fool role is supposed to be eccentric and gives out insights the others miss. Rock would be great on the eccentric part, but his insights wouldn't be ones even he catches. Marty/The Fool also ends up figuring out what is going on, and Gustafa seems like he would be the underestimated one for that role. I listed Gustafa first for the role because I just like Rock more as The Virgin (even if he might turn it into more of a horror comedy).

Security: Vesta and Wally/Sully

The Director: Romana

Control Room Technician 1: Sebastian

Control Room Technician 2: Griffin/Gavin

Accounting: Chris and Grant/Garret

Archives: Carter

Bio Med: Dr. Hardy/Baddoch

Chemical: Daryl

Maintenance: Takakura maybe Galen/Gary

Demolition: Kassey/Charlie and Patrick/Cole

Operations: Celia/Cecilia, Nina, and Samantha/San

Zoology: Flora

Kitchen: Tim/Tei and Ruby/Lou

Most of these were pretty straightforward I thought. I would trust Vesta with my life so she made perfect sense for security to me. Wally/Sully just kind has a look that makes me think of a part-time security guard. Romana as The Director because she mentions loving to trick people and the ritual is nothing but a giant trap to lure in sacrifices.

I was a bit stuck on the control room technicians before settling on Sebastian and Griffin/Gavin. Sebastian would fulfill his duties for Romana to keep the ritual on track. Griffin/Gavin seems like he would be sympathetic to the position of the sacrifices but willing to do his job for the greater good.

I feel like Carter, Daryl, Chris, Grant/Garret, and Dr. Hardy/Baddoch were all straightforward. Takakura looks like a maintenance guy (and I mean that with the utmost respect because they're some of my favorite coworkers). I prefer him for the Harbinger role but no one else fits Maintenance like him. I guess Galen/Gary could fit in Maintenance but he seems like the I know everything and how to fix it but I'm about to retire guy.

The twins have to be demolition. I mean they ended up in the valley after a mishap with fireworks literally blew them away. Celia/Cecilia, Nina, and Samantha/San for Operations. Their primary duty is monitoring the sacrifices and they seemed fitting for different reasons to being sensitive there. Lastly, Flora seems studious and the best suited for researching/upkeep of all the monsters.

OTHERS

Harbinger: Takakura, Vesta, or Marlin/Matthew

The Ancient One: Harvest Goddess

I just love, love, love Takakura as the Harbinger. He'd do his best to deter them, but when the young idiots insist, he shrugs and continues his day. Vesta or Marlin/Matthew could also work since they're the first ones when entering the valley. Celia/Cecilia seems to nice to fill the role and would spill the beans instead. I guess Van would be a good fit for the position as well since he's not a permanent resident of the valley.

The Harvest Goddess not being seen actually works great for this concept! The rituals have been working! Let's stay where we don't see her in the valley.

I know I've missed characters but I couldn't figure out places for Mui/Pui, made a choice to leave the kids out, and didn't want to make the Sprites or Mukumuku monsters.
