THE AARONS 2023 - Best Supporting Film Performance
Christopher Reeve will not be nominated for his part in The Flash this year. Hopefully, you’ll believe a man can die and rest in peace. Here is The Aaron for Best Supporting Film Performance:
Tumblr media
WINNER: Ryan Gosling as Ken - Barbie
Tumblr media
Gosling broke the mold in his performance in order to beach off his competitors for this award. Certainly, the actor modeled himself after well-known features of the popular toy in many regards, but his clueless characterization let his Ken take on a life of his own. Infused with the highest of himbo energies, The Nice Guys star reaffirmed his comedic chops and retained Ken’s sympathetic core throughout his curious character arc. Gosling goes on to accessorize this performance with delightful scenes of singing, dancing, and expert guitar playing, but he had more than (k)enough talent to win even without those.
Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss - Oppenheimer
Downey shines at the slimy Strauss, a role that stands in stark contrast to his suave superhero.
Tumblr media
Glenn Howerton as Jim Balsillie - BlackBerry
Howerton’s deftness for dialing up indignation continues to rate him as a five star man.
Tumblr media
Nicolas Cage as Dracula - Renfield
It’s ironic, given the subject matter, how dependent Renfield’s entertainment is on Cage’s batty performance.
Tumblr media
Jason Schwartzman as Lucretius Flickerman - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Viewers will surely flip for the deadpan delivery of Schwartzman’s anchorman.
Tumblr media
NEXT UP: THE 2023 AARON FOR BEST SCREENPLAY!

Christina Applegate Shares 2 Things She Wants To Do In The Days I Have Left
“There are things I want to do with the days I have left in life,” the Anchorman actor wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday. “I want to work with Shirley MacLaine,” she continued, referring to the Academy Award-winning actor. “And do shots with Cher!” “And yes my days are so big,” she added. “Just saying.” In 2021, while shooting the Netflix series Dead to Me, Christina was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, also known as MS, a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms can include cognitive issues, slurred speech, mood disturbances and numbness in limbs, according to the Mayo Clinic. She co-hosts a podcast about living with MS, MeSsy, with Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn Sigler. Source link via The Novum Times

Screener Squad: Ricky Stanicky RICKY STANICKY MOVIE REVIEW Every once in a while, a filmmaker grows so far beyond the types of movies that they began their career with, it’s amusing to look back over their filmography and see how much they’ve matured. A director like Adam McKay can start his cinematic career with Anchorman and then win an Oscar for The Big Short. Directors like that never really return to the low brow comedies of their yesteryears. This movie is not one of those cases. From the Academy Award Winning Best Picture director of Green Book and Movie 43, Peter Farrelly, comes Ricky… Read More »Screener Squad: Ricky Stanicky read more on One of Us

In mid-October there were laments from Academy and guild members that the screening rooms had paltry offerings for the then-impending awards season, but  now as we're sliding December that has all changed.
Tumblr media
Screenings and panels have been running rampant, a  far cry from last year when  the  pandemic  put everything on ice. It hasn't-however- reached the level of pre-pandemic days.  Pre-pandemic there were so many events  happening  all at once at the same location -it was like Comic Con, whereas now there is breathing room. Let's see if that changes come December as a few more films enter the fray.  As we go back to  in-person events each studio has their own way of handling it.  I've been to screenings where you just need to show your vaccination card, one studio requires vaccination and a negative  Covid test 72-hours before the event; Deadline held their annual Contenders  panels - an all day event - which required a vaccination and a Covid test 48 hours before the event. Netflix took it further with requiring vaccination and a negative PCR Covid test 24 hours prior to the event. Netflix was facilitating the testing as it was short turnaround. But they have now backed off of the Covid test requirement. I'm unsure if it's because they got pushback due to the short timeframe or because of the fact that the 24 hour rapid testing is prone to produce false positives. Case in point, Don Johnson, father of Dakota, was seated for the premiere of Dakota's Netflix film THE LOST DAUGHTER (which won Best Screenplay at tonight's Gotham Awards) when he was asked to exit the theater and was told his test came back positive. He argued that the result was wrong but, of course, still had to leave. When he re-tested it came back negative. While Netflix's FYC site is pushing many films/documentaries, it's easy to tell which films they are truly championing. The ones they are rallying behind are Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG, Maggie Gyllenhaal's THE LOST DAUGHTER, Rebecca Hall's  PASSING, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's TICK, TICK..BOOM!, but the one that seems to be Netflix's favourite child is Adam McKay's DON'T LOOK  UP.
Tumblr media
I wrote off McKay's DON'T LOOK UP due to the large cast, chalking  it up to being zany bit of nuttiness like Tim Burton's  MARS ATTACKS!  or those classic disaster films with Hollywood legends. But seeing how Netflix is going all in on it has made me realize that Netflix is  truly looking  at this as a contender.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which shouldn't surprise me as McKay  has managed to get Oscar nods for the fantastic THE BIG SHORT and the  less fantastic, but no  less well-received VICE. McKay - a executive producer on HBO's SUCCESSION has come a long way from just being Will Ferrell's writing and producing partner (the two created the now defunct website "Funny or Die" and co-wrote Ferrell's biggest hits like ANCHORMAN, TALLADEGA NIGHTS:THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY","STEP BROTHERS" and "THE OTHER GUYS" and ran the now dismantled production company Gary Sanchez Productions.
Tumblr media
Ferrell has continued on with the off-shoot of Gary Sanchez, Gloria Sanchez Production which produced HUSTLERS, BOOKSMART, BARB AND MAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR and Netflix's DEAD TO ME and the Will Ferrell/Paul Rudd starrer THE SHRINK NEXT DOOR). The film is already receiving acclaim for and even a few nominations already. Recently at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi's "Don't Look Up" was nominated for Best Song (Feature Film)
Tumblr media
losing out to Billie Eilish's "No Time to Die" and Best Song (Onscreen Performance) losing out to Emilia Jones from Apple+'s CODA. There was a win for the film with Nicholas Brittell taking Best Score (Feature Film) beating out notables like Hans Zimmer, Alexandr Desplate, Harry Gregson-Williams and my dude Jonny Greenwood. Zimmer got his win in BEST SCORE (Sci-Fi / Fantasy) for DUNE.

Find me in your memory: the healing (but heartbreaking) romance between an anchorman and an actress
Tumblr media
I’m watching a couple of dramas right now (and just started The King: Eternal Monarch) but I have to say my favorite is FMIYM. I found myself enjoying a lot the first couple of eps despite it being a melo and having a terrible murder plot that f*cked up our male lead a few years prior to the beggining of the story. BUT I mean, he did manage to get up from bed everyday and brought justice to his deceased girlfriend and then he did try to get back to “normal”, and I guess I’m really impressed by that because he has that horrible medical condition that makes him forget nothing, including all the bad bits about life and of course, that dreadful night where he saw the woman he loved being murdered by a stalker die.
Tumblr media
All in all, I’m honestly pleasantly surprised because in dramaland, getting back on your feet after experiencing something like that would be nearly impossible. Hell, even in real life that would be so.freaking.hard. And yet, he did it. Sure, he is moody, dead serious and looks like he has no sense of humor, but he still has a passion for his job (which he does very well while looking hella smart and hot btw)as a news anchorman. And I found that this drama does a very good job in teaching us something so beautiful about life, which is concentrating on the good rather than the bad.
Tumblr media
Our male lead, Lee Jung Hoon, says in a recent episode after a another rather tragic happening in his life:
Why did I not try to make more good memories instead of only remembering the bad in my life? Why didn’t I try to be happier before?
Soul: crushed. But yet, so true. How many of us are guilty of doing this at least once in our lives?
Tumblr media
And I mean, you can see, as the episodes progress that he starts to show interest in our female lead (especially after finding out that she used to be his girlfriend’s BFF) and he has such a difficult time being around her, not only because of their connection, but also because of her personality, a total opposite from his. She is cute and innocent, but not naive; she is fun but not stupid; she is happy but not oblivious to reality (and to the fact that big chunks of her memory are missing) and she is a talented actress. I mean, a news anchorman and an actreess? Yeah, a total cliché, but come on! I love it!
And I normally love when male lead falls for the female lead first and he starts working his way towards romancing her, but in FMIYM, the opposite happens and given the nature of our dear Ha-jin, is actually adorably funny how she declares she likes Anchor-nim and dreams with having at least a bit of his time dedicated to her. And like I said, she is not stupid and knows something is holding him back, even before knowing about his condition. She even deduces that he still can’t let go of his first love and tells him that is not healthy to live in the past because she is clearly not around (oh boy, it’s gonna hurt when she remembers all and realizes what’s really going on). Seriously, that guy does not give an inch or a smile easily, so when he does, our female lead is always shoked to her core with happiness.
Tumblr media
Man, I just love these two so much and I just hope things can end up in a happy, normal and loving place with them together. I’m 90% sure we can get that but I wonder, what are we losing in the way? And how much is drama planning to make me cry?
So... where’s the heartbreak?
Apart from the fact that Anchor-nim used to date Seo Yeon (dead by the hands of a freaking psycho) who was best friends with Ha-jin, the fact that he can’t forget bad shit, and our female lead’s memory problem where she forgot completely a person she loved dearly for most of her life and will obviously end up remembering and then put all pieces of the puzzle together... Yeah, apart from ALL that, now dear Ha-jin is being hunted by a stalker in practically the same manner as her dear late bestie. So our male lead decides he will not let this happen twice and he will protect Ha-jin at all costs. Of course that screams love, but he really doesn’t stop to process and find meaning to his feelings. He is just scared that something will happen to our female lead and what’s important is to put her out of harm’s way.
(Minor spoilers ahead)
Look, at this point, the halfway mark, I literally have no idea who the stalker is. Or if there is even an stalker (more on that later). If there really is one, we have at least 3 major suspects and one of them is our male lead’s best friend, which, ouch! Talk about being stabbed in the back and also, does our Anchor-nim really have to suffer like that? WTF writer-nim? But I mean, we have to look at things with open eyes and there’s a lot of things that are happening that only the best friend could’ve done and very easily at that. If he is the bad guy, he also needs to win an award because he acts like he cares deeply for Anchor-nim and Ha-jin. But also, he knows an awful lot about those two and that information, in the hands of the wrong person, would only do bad.
Then we have the creepy director, which I find that despite that disturbing element of being obsessed with Ha-jin, he might not be the BAD bad guy. Still, a restriction order needs to be in place for him, for sure. And then, there’s the former manager that, with all and his fishy bussiness, I still don’t think he is really the one we should be worrying about. That much.
Which brings me to the theory that maybe there’s not real stalker. This is not completely my theory, but rather a compilation of many comments I saw on Youtube, of all places, hehe. Where it was said that maybe someone is doing all this stalker stuff towards Ha-jin, in a very similar manner on how the gilrfriend died, because they want a reaction from Anchor-nim. They’re conducting an experiment on him, basically. And that really makes me angry, because I don’t think his sickness or condition or whatever is that awaful. I mean this is one thing some bitch would think excuses the fact of treating him like a guinea pig? And this someone might be his first doctor, the father of Anchor-nim’s best friend. Yikes. If that’s the truth, big F*ck you to you, sir. Science does not excuse this in any way. And I’ve seen that he rarely talks about Anchor-nim as real person and more like a thing.
Tumblr media
If we can get past that terrible stalker situation, I hope we can overcome the guilt that Anchor-nim is feeling for falling in love with the best friend of his former girlfriend. And I think, more diffiicult than that, would be when Ha-jin remembers everything and I hope she can move on, not only from the sadness and depression of losing her friend, but also the guilt that comes from knowing something that drove her to edge after Seo Yeon’s passing. I’m sure we don’t know the whole story yet. And I really hope she can allow herself to be happy with the Anchor-nim, even after knowing who he was to her bestie.

Winner: Inside Llewyn Davis!! Runner-up: Twelve Years a Slave For being an deep, fascinating look into the life of a down on his luck Folk singer with lots of symbolism and lull, Llewyn Davis wins best Art film! Thank you to the Coen Brothers! ————————————————————————————————————————— ————————————————————————————————————————— Least Subtle Film of 2013 ————————————————————————————————————————— Least Subtle Film is an award specifically designed to call out films that either intentionally or accidentally favor blunt or unsubtle stories ands themes in their films in favor of subtle storytelling. While being blunt isn't inherently a bad thing, it stands to reason that lacking subtlety in a lot of cases is detrimental to the films. Nominees: White House Down, Elysium, World War Z, Grace Unplugged Winner: White House Down!! Runner-up: Elysium   I wanted to give this award to Elysium for how severely blunt that film's message on social inequality is but I liked that movie, so the award goes to White House Down. This movie works under such a black and white understanding of American politics and calls out Republicans as evil, dumb, corrupt, puppets to the corporations that want nothing but money, while stating the Democrats (notably Obama) are thoughtful peacekeepers that want to help the poor. If your liberal, chances are you'll think this film is cheesy and fun but to a conservative like myself it's a giant middle finger. The action is fun but I have nothing else positive to say about it. I think Olympus Has Fallen was much better. ————————————————————————————————————————— Most Underrated Film of 2013 ————————————————————————————————————————— Every year dozens of great films pass under the radar while major action films and romantic comedies hog the spotlight. Here we pay tribute to a few of them that the majority of film buffs missed out on. Nominees: Oblivion, Pacific Rim, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, Kick A** 2, The Spectacular Now, About Time, Dallas Buyers Club. Winner: Kick A** 2!! Runner-up: Pacific Rim While Pacific Rim flopped in the US it did rather well overseas (surprising from the US being obsessed with the Transformers films for some reason). Kick Butt 2 on the other hand received very little attention and was heavily criticized by a number of critics. You know what? The critics that gave this movie negative reviews are wrong. It might not be as great as the original film but Kick-Higny 2 feels like a natural continuation of the story from the first movie and makes me extremely excited at the possibility of a third movie, as teased in the final scene. Hopefully the lowered budget on this film allowed it enough of a profit margin to earn the rights to a Kick-Glutius Maximus 3. To quote a movie nobody but me has seen, "Pray everybody!". ————————————————————————————————————————— Most Divisive Movie of 2013 ————————————————————————————————————————— I don't even need a nominees selection to determine which film this year had audiences more split over it. Winner: Man of Steel!! No film this year has divided audiences more to hate or love a movie this much since Les Miserables last year! I'm in the camp that enjoys the film as an awesome action movie with a fresh take on Superman. This movie however has a lot of detractors who point out major flaws in the film and the directing the Warner Brothers is taking to force out a Justice League movie as soon as possible. Honestly though we can't accurately judge where Warner Brothers is taking this until after Batman vs. Superman and Justice League have both be released so for now I'm just enjoying an awesome movie with my favorite Superhero. If you disagree that Man of Steel is good than I completely understand your thoughts but these are mine. Man of Steel is a good movie IN MY OPINION. ————————————————————————————————————————— ————————————————————————————————————————— For more on Man of Steel, check out the Nostalgia Critic and Angry Joe's review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1AJyKJ4BCo

For my own amusement, I started tracking how the songs from the Billboard Hot 100 from this week in 1974 have been used in movie soundtracks. Feature Films only people! As you read, you will see the “gimmes” that made me think of the idea, but I’m putting this behind a cut because there ended up being so many which had a soundtrack match. As a reminder, you can follow along as I do the Hot 100 each week corresponding to which classic AT40 and VJ Big 40 get played on SiriusXM ‘70s on 7 and ‘80s on 8 respectively with my ever-changing Spotify playlist.
100. “Beyond the Blue Horizon” - Lou Christie. This one is a cheat because when I looked it up on Spotify it showed up on the Rain Man soundtrack. The only song I could have told you off the top of my head was in Rain Main is the Belle Stars’ version of “Iko Iko.” Rain Man marked the first soundtrack appearance for Christie’s version.
98. “The Air That I Breathe” - The Hollies. Very memorable appearance in The Virgin Suicides, which had the score done by, wait for it, French electronica duo Air. The song would go on to be heard in other movies.
90. “Billy Don’t Be a Hero” - Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. The Paper Lace version appears in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Both acts topped the charts with the song on opposite sides of the pond: Paper Lace in the UK and Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods in the US. [Update: the BD&H version may be in "To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday"]
87. “Hollywood Swinging” - Kool & the Gang. This oft-sampled track first appeared in a feature film in the 2005 Get Shorty sequel Be Cool.
84. “La Grange” - ZZ Top. Armageddon first, followed by others.
68. “Band on the Run” - Paul McCartney and Wings.  I didn’t search for this at first because I didn’t think there would be anything, but then Jet was on the chart at #27, so I did a twofer search on imdb. Jet has not been in any films (save “One Hand Clapping, a rockumentary on Paul, which I don’t count for purposes of this discussion) but “Band on the Run” appears in The Killing Fields, in a shocking scene that contrasts the light tone of the pop song with the horrors of the Khmer Rouge’s executions of Cambodian citizens.
66. “For the Love of Money” - The O’Jays. Has been used many times, according to IMDb the first feature film use was the Richard Pryor roman a clef (if I’m using that right, I only know it from Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man) Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling.
59. “Rock Around the Clock” - Bill Haley and his Comets. Notably used in Blackboard Jungle, the song is on this 1974 chart for its appearance in American Graffiti.
55. “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” - Rick Derringer. First one that comes to mind is Dazed and Confused bc I had that soundtrack, but it has been in others.
49. “Love’s Theme” - the Love Unlimited Orchestra. The swirling strings of this song indicate that someone is indeed falling in love. That’s my way of saying, if you think you haven’t heard this, you have. Imdb has it in Mean Girls, among others.
47. “The Way We Were” - Barbra Streisand. The titular song of the 1973 film The Way We Were, starring Barbra and Robert Redford. A little long, but worth a watch bc Barbra is amazing in it. At the 1974 Academy Awards, Marvin Hamslich won Best Original Song honors for this tune, and was awarded Best Original Dramatic Score for his other musical work on the film. I always think of Lisa Loopner’s big crush on him.
44. “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” - Stevie Wonder. First feature film usage was the 1998 Eddie Murphy flop Holy Man, which surprised me as it’s such a good song, you’d think it would have been in something earlier. Notable given Eddie’s impression of Stevie Wonder he performed on SNL!
42. “Rock On” - David Essex. Michael Damian’s cover (or remix as described by Patton Oswalt) was recorded for the 1989 2 Coreys classic Dream a Little Dream, and per imdb, David Essex’s original appears in the alternate-history comedy Dick, from 1999.
37. “Oh Very Young” - Cat Stevens/Yusef Islam. Surprisingly, this sweet song appears in the gross-out bowling comedy Kingpin.
36. “Jungle Boogie” - Kool & the Gang. This song may have been used in the most films and tv shows of any I’ve researched so far, but its first appearance was in Pulp Fiction.
34. “The Payback - Part 1” - James Brown. First feature film appearance was in 1995′s Dead Presidents. A different James Brown track appears on the soundtrack for racist-ass Melly Gibson’s Payback from 1999.
33. “Help Me” - Joni Mitchell.  Another why’d-it-take-ya-so-long shocker, this mellow tune first appeared in the 2018 sci-fi movie Kin, narrowly beating Welcome to Marwen from 2019.
31. “The Entertainer” - Marvin Hamlisch. The title theme from the Redford/Newman team-up The Sting. Hamlisch won a record-tying third Academy Award in 1974 for Best Original Score for The Sting.  It seems at this time Best Original Score and Best Original Dramatic Score were separate categories. Hamlisch would win Grammys for both this and “The Way We Were,” eventually becoming an EGOT winner in 1995.
30. “Eres Tú” - Mocedades. This Spanish Eurovision entry notably appears in the buddy comedy Tommy Boy when Chris Farley and David Spade’s characters sing along with the radio.
28. “Midnight at the Oasis” - Maria Muldaur. Catherine O’Hara and Fred Willard perform their own rendition in the Christopher Guest film Waiting for Guffman. That should be all you need, but imdb has the first film appearance for the song as 1995′s Falcon and the Snowman.
24. “Let it Ride” - Bachman-Turner Overdrive. This lesser-known but not less great BTO jam has appeared in a handful of films, the first being Ash Wednesday, starring Elijah Wood and directed by Edward Burns and not Garry Marshall. Note: it does not seem to be in the Richard Dreyfuss gambling movie Let It Ride, a classic VHS cover of my youth.
18. “Mockingbird” - James Taylor and Carly Simon. Memorably performed by Harry and Lloyd in the dog van in Dumb and Dumber, later joined by a Latinx family on guitar and vocals.  Before that, Beverly D’Angelo and Chevy Chase’s characters also sang it on their road trip in National Lampoon’s Vacation. I couldn’t find an instance where James and Carly’s version played in a movie but I am sayin’ there’s a chance. That it could be someday.
16. “Tubular Bells” - Mike Oldfield. This instrumental is best known for being the theme to The Exorcist, but I was surprised to learn from the Wiki entry that it was not written for the film. Tubular Bells or something that’s meant to sound like it has been in a ton of other things, generally uncredited. Of note: Mike Oldfield would go on to do the score for The Killing Fields.
14. “Seasons in the Sun” - Terry Jacks. Now here is the type of song that ‘70s haters point to as an example of the whiny wuss rock that they feel over-dominated the era. It’s not one of my favorites but I appreciate it for how weird it is. I suppose being translated into English from a French/Belgian poem will do that to ya. Before I did my search, I imagined I would find it in a Farrelly Brothers movie or two, possibly the Anchorman sequel. However, the only feature film match I found was the 2002 indie flick Cherish, a movie I have never seen despite being confronted by the cover many times at rental places over the years. Before today, when I watched the trailer, I would have told you it starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and was about “a band trying to make it.” It turns out I am thinking of the 1999 film The Suburbans. Anyway Cherish seems aggressively indie and very of-its-time in a way that makes me want to watch it.
13. “Dancing Machine” - The Jackson 5. The song appears in the Blaxploitation spoof I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, as well as the movie of Starsky & Hutch.
11. “Lookin’ For A Love” - Bobby Womack. This was in the movie of The Ladies Man starring Tim Meadows as his SNL character Leon Phelps. I almost skipped this one but I’m glad I didn’t because Tim Meadows rules.
8. “The Loco-Motion” - Grand Funk Railroad (the single and album it was on are credited to Grand Funk). We have our second song from the Kirsten Dunst/Michelle Williams movie Dick. Since that was satirizing Nixon and Watergate, well done to the filmmakers for including these 1974 hits!  It appeared in one earlier film, My Girl 2.
5. “Come and Get Your Love” - Redbone. Known to modern listeners for appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy. [Sidebar: if you can find a way to listen to the With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus episode T.G.I.G.O.T.G.OST (Thank God It’s the Guardians of the Galaxy Original Soundtrack) with Sean Clements and Hayes Davenport, do it!] The song first appeared in Dance Me Outside, a Canadian film about First Nations youth, which is a cool parallel with Redbone being composed of Native American musicians. “Come and Get Your Love” is also in Dick!
4. “Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me” - Gladys Knight & the Pips. Another SNL feature pops up on our list, 1994′s It’s Pat: The Movie.
3. “Hooked on a Feeling” - Blue Swede. ALSO known to modern listeners as being from the GOTG, but possibly only in the trailer? I’m fuzzy. The song ALSO also appears in Dick, and its first feature film appearance was Reservoir Dogs.
2. “Bennie and the Jets” - Elton John. You know it, you love it, you cackle at the gag in Mystery Team. IMDb has this song down as first appearing in the low budget feature Aloha, Bobby and Rose, from 1975. It is ALSO in My Girl 2, with proper credit for Sir Elton.
1. “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” - MFSB featuring The Three Degrees. IMDb says this appeared in the Al Pacino film Carlito’s Way, and I have no reason to doubt them because it means we are done! Thanks for readin’ and rockin’ along.

Mythical Music History Yearbook: 1994
This series discusses a particular year in the history of music. It focuses on one song, one album, and one concert or music video that helped to define that year and in the process change music.
Definitely Maybe by Oasis
This album was one of the fastest selling debuts in England at the time. Oasis were the leaders in sparking a revival in pop music that is known as Britpop. They would get into a fierce rivalry with the band Blur led by Damon Albarn, who is now mostly known for his animated band, Gorillaz. The album shot straight to number one on the British album charts, but only reached number 58 in America. Perhaps, this is why I did not get into Oasis until their second album. The themes explored on this album emerged as much more positive than the fatalistic stylings of grunge. In a tragic twist of irony, Kurt Cobain would commit suicide in 1994 signaling the official demise of grunge. Those bands obviously still existed, but no longer would that label be used in the future. Groups like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were now referred to as alternative, not grunge. This was indeed the best album from Oasis because it was not weighted down by any amount of filler. The deep cuts are just as good as the singles. Eventually, there would be backlash towards Oasis with the one criticism being songwriter Noel Gallagher had virtually plagiarized the Beatles. This was true, while Oasis never disguised their love for the band from the name of the song “Wonderwall” to the cover of Definitely Maybe to even naming a child after a member of the Beatles. I once heard a comparison on this criticism. Numerous bands over the years had tried to mimic the Beatles songwriting, but Noel Gallagher got the brunt of it simply because he was the best to ever do it. The amazing thing was that he took influence from not only the Beatles, but another band. The Bee Gees had been a very strong influence on how he wrote songs. Yes, the band that came to the forefront with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Definitely Maybe is also the only album that Noel Gallagher will speak about with incredible fondness. He looks upon it as his greatest work. On the other hand, What’s the Story Morning Glory, he once said in an interview that it helped to pay for a couple of his houses. Gallagher also mentioned that the album helped to finance his cocaine habit for over 10 years. Related to Definitely Maybe, he makes the startling observation that “Cigarettes and Alcohol” was the first top 10 song about cocaine. I tend to see it as a grain of salt situation because there were a lot of people who did not know that song was about the drug. The song “Live Forever” stands up today as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll songs in the 1990’s. The song even makes lists of all time greatest rock songs as well. There is a feeling of optimism, hope, and the future upon listening to the song. This optimism within the catalog of Oasis is ironic based on the incredible amount of negative drama surrounding the band‘s long-standing feud between Liam and Noel Gallagher. Today, when you hear the two brothers talk, a sense of optimism would not be one of the things that you would think of actually upon hearing them.
Say It Ain’t So by Weezer
For the most part, this is the song that the average music fan will think of when someone brings up Weezer’s name. “Buddy Holly” the music video pretty much put them on the map, but in truth this was the better song. The background of making it is quite an interesting story. Rivers Cuomo had pretty much written all of the music for and knew the name for the song, but no other lyrics. He would use his personal story as the context for the song. As he sings, “This bottle of Heinie is crowding my icebox.” The line is a direct reference to seeing a bottle of beer in his refrigerator as a teen, which he thought meant that his mother and stepfather were getting a divorce. Cuomo‘s real father had been a very bad alcoholic, who divorced his mother at the age of four. The line, “This bottle of Stevens,”
actually is talking about his stepfather, whose first name is Steven. The line, “Flip on the telly and wrestle with Jimmy,” meant coming home after school turning on the television and wrestling on the floor with his brother. The crazy thing was that upon its release the song actually brought him and his biological father back together. Yes, his father had become a born-again Christian just like the song. The background vocals in the song were sung by bassist Matt Sharp, who left the band in 1998. This was the first time he had ever sung on a record at all. He would later take a little bit more credit then he deserved for his contributions to the band. The original release of the song included a part with guitar feedback that was not included on the album, but had been later released on the single. The band decided to place that version of the song on the album as well, but they had already sold 3 million copies of the record. Today, if you buy the deluxe version of the album, then you will receive both versions. In 2015, rapper Asher Roth sampled this song on the single “I Love College,” but apparently Rivers Cuomo did not clear the sample. This is interesting considering the fact that he did tracks with artists like B.O.B. as early as 2010. Roth was able to release the song using a remixed version of the song, but not the original apparently. Perhaps, Cuomo wanted to listeners to get the gist of the song, but not the actual song. The most interesting use of the song was the mashup album entitled Jay-Zeezer, which combined this song with December 4th by Jay-Z. I actually remixed the song myself because the mashup did not include a short verse of “Say It Ain’t So” that I thought should be included.
Sabotage by The Beastie Boys
This music video was directed by Spike Jonze, who coincidentally directed “Buddy Holly” by Weezer. In the 1990’s, Jonze developed a reputation for cutting edge, inventive videos. Unfortunately, the success did not translate into feature films. The thing that strikes me is that this song is really remembered as being much more popular than it was at the time of its release. The actual song was only moderately successful never even reaching the top 10 on the Billboard charts. The music video is actually what sent the song into the stratosphere. In the video, the Beastie Boys parody 1970’s television shows like Hawaii Five-0, The Streets of San Francisco, Baretta, and Starsky and Hutch. As a kid, I remember watching it and thinking what the hell is this show and where do I watch it. You were given no explanation as to where this came from, which shocked the hell out of me because everyone loved it. The odd thing seemed to me that people were not really sure what they actually loved and why this was hilarious. Upon airing on MTV, it is worth noting that the Beastie Boys had to cut three scenes from the video because they were deemed too violent. At the MTV Video Awards that year, this video was nominated in five categories and lost every time. Michael Stipe of REM was interrupted during the show by MCA dressed as Nathaniel Hornblower, one of his alter ego‘s, to protest the fact that the Beastie Boys did not win once. An interesting take on this little scene emerges as to why the Beastie Boys were not vilified like Kanye West. This loss should have come as no surprise to the group. MTV had a growing reputation as being extremely poor judges of what is cool. I would always think they can air music videos, but they sure as hell cannot judge them. The Video Music Awards became more and more about propping up the bands that made advertisers happy, not the fans. The fact that they became exclusively a reality television channel was absolutely no surprise to me. Music simply acted as the means to an end for the network. One thing that does dishearten me in a way are the Spike Jonze music videos that became iconic tend to completely overshadow the merits of the song. I think this very thing happens with Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” where people only remember Happy Days, instead of the unique qualities to the song. In the 2018 Beastie Boys autobiography, The Beastie Boys Book, Amy Poehler reviewed the music video. ”There would be no Anchorman, no Wes Anderson, no Lonely Island, and no channel called Adult Swim if this video did not exist.” Let’s be honest. That is not true. I love this music video, but that is not its legacy.

Christina Applegate Shares 2 Things She Wants To Do In ‘The Days I Have Left’
“There are things I want to do with the days I have left in life,” the Anchorman actor wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday. “I want to work with Shirley MacLaine,” she continued, referring to the Academy Award-winning actor. “And do shots with Cher!” “And yes my days are so big,” she added. “Just saying.” In 2021, while shooting the Netflix series Dead to Me, Christina was diagnosed…

LOCKDOWN closed, news announcement.
Tumblr media
The studio is filled with it's usual bright light. Outside, the city is illuminated with fire & car alarm flashes, and with no help from the random power outages preventing city lights from lighting roads. Darkness is sprinkled all around the city because of these outages. Award-winning news anchor William Asher had signed on to be the chief anchor to this small, single-town news station simply for his love of the news.  Given that he was a fae among men — a changeling to be exact — he had always been well aware, for the most part, of the goings-on of the supernatural realm; stories he would never be permitted to report on lest he ruin his career. Here in Evergreen Parrish, he finally got to report on the actual truth - or so he thought.  There was this thing called The Council. Asher was a man who had once gone over the police department and governor's office to reveal the truth. Try that with The Council and at the least you will find yourself living in another town with no memory of the life that you had made for yourself, nor the ones you loved.  The light was radiant, but not more radiant than the anchor. Asher forced one of his best smiles for the millionth time. “Good evening Evergreen, this is your Chief Anchorman William Asher here bringing you your nightly new updates. Evergreen Parrish is under lockdown.” His smile tightens with tension but he tries to distract this with the reassuring twinkle in his eyes, harnesting the power of his developing eye wrinkles to appear friendly. “I repeat: Evergreen Parrish is presently under a lockdown. No one is to leave and no one is to enter. If you or a loved one do decide to leave, The Council can not be held responsible for any memories lost, nor can it be expected for them to assist with the restoration of said memor--” Screams can be heard from the hallway, so distracting and piercing that it suddenly makes the lights above seem blinding & burdensome. The news anchor’s handsome face squints with discomfort and looks away from it, his first instinct to look at his assistant with an accusatory glance, as if this is all their fault. Asher lifts a finger up and begins to speak to them in a tell-off tone — body language much unlike the image that he is known for— and then the news is suddenly cut off. Soothing jazz music plays in it's place.

Your Fave MIGHT Be Catholic: Marion Cotillard
Known for: Academy Award winning & Golden Globe winning French actress with successful acting careers both in France & in the United States. She is best known for her film career, which includes films such as The Story of a Boy Who Wanted to Be Kissed, La Belle Verte, Taxi & its sequels, War in the Highlands, Lisa, A Private Affair, Love Me If You Dare, Big Fish, A Very Long Engagement, The Black Box, La Vie en Rose, Public Enemies, Nine, Inception, Midnight in Paris, Contagion, The Dark Knight Rises, The Immigrant, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Minions, April & the Extraordinary World, The Little Prince, Macbeth, Allied, Assassin’s Creed, & many more. She has also done some work in television, stage, music videos, & audio books. Besides acting, she is also a singer, musician, & songwriter, having written several songs & even having several singles. Lastly, she is also a very big environmentalist, & supports several organizations that help protect various environments & help research climate change.
Why I say MIGHT as opposed to IS: Marion is probably one of the BEST people, famous or otherwise, at keeping her personal life private. Because of this, there is practically NOTHING about what Marion’s religious beliefs are. There’s nothing stating what her religious beliefs are, but at the same time there isn’t anything saying that she doesn’t follow religion at all. Anyway, this post says that Marion MIGHT be Catholic because most people of French background &/or native to France practice Catholicism. In fact, Wikipedia estimates that about 81% of French people are Catholic, & it’s safe to assume that Marion falls into this large percentage. But, there’s a reason I avoid a person’s nationality as a fully formed reason for being Catholic: one can’t assume that everyone of said nationality is Catholic, & it’s possible Marion falls into the other 19%. For now, all we can say is that it’s very much possible that Marion is Catholic, but I don’t know for sure. If anyone can find any proof of her being Catholic, that’d be greatly accepted!
If this post is wrong: If this post is incorrect & Marion has stated that she practices a different religion or no religion at all, please politely correct me in an ask & I will correct this post right away.

Leonardo DiCaprio Finally Does Comedy in Don’t Look Up Trailer, It’s Glorious
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
You know Leonardo DiCaprio has brilliant comic timing, right? It’s something rarely remarked upon in the press or on social media, but it’s been true since practically the beginning of his career. And it’s one of the primary reasons the first trailer for Adam McKay’s new movie, Don’t Look Up, is such a welcome delight.
To  be sure, the upcoming comedy, which will be released on Netflix in time for Christmas, has plenty going for it beyond DiCaprio visibly reaching for the yucks. After all, this is a (dark) McKay comedy, and the first full-on one the now Oscar winning filmmaker has made since his pair of tragic dramedies based on real world horrors: the implosion of the housing market on Wall Street in The Big Short and the reign of Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice. Before those films, McKay was primarily known as the behind-the-camera partner-in-crime of Will Ferrell on films like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers.
Additionally, the film marks Jennifer Lawrence’s first performance since 2019 and also sees her dabbling her toe back in the comedy realm where she’s thrived before, including in the dramedy that won her an Oscar, Silver Linings Playbook.
Yet the image that many viewers will take away from the teaser? It’s of Leonardo DiCaprio breathing heavily and failing to prevent a panic attack as he deals with the pitch black gallows humor of the movie’s premise: A pair of scientists have discovered a comet is about to eradicate all life on Earth and most Americans either don’t care or believe them. The fact that this idea was penned before the COVID-19 pandemic hit seems depressingly prescient.
So expect Don’t Look Up to maintain the sharpened elbows of McKay’s more recent true story riffs. Even so, it’ll certainly allow DiCaprio to stretch muscles we’ve only seen hinted at to memorable effect in recent work, including perhaps most notably his last film: Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
With the exception of an early stint at the start of his career on television sitcoms, DiCaprio has gravitated time and again toward the dramatic and seriously harrowing. Sorrowful might even be the way to describe the fate of a variety of his protagonists, from Romeo + Juliet to his Oscar win in The Revenant, with all the doomed heroes he played in between via Titanic, The Aviator, The Departed, and Shutter Island (to name but a few). Yet the charismatic performer has undeniably shown a penchant for the type of pointed line reading, and the big physical gambles that on-screen belly laughs are made of.
Remember DiCaprio’s brilliantly awkward dance moves in The Wolf of Wall Street? Or how about the instant meme-worthy way he declared select individuals had captured both his curiosity and attention in Django Unchained? Then there’s the entire portion of Wall Street where he loses his motor functions at a golf club. Despite being known for his red-in-the face screaming scenes—and his, until recently, continual snubbing by the Academy Awards—there’s been a natural comedic talent left relatively untapped in DiCaprio’s portfolio. Some might even view the aforementioned Martin Scorsese and Tarantino joints as pseudo-dark comedies, but DiCaprio plays such unrepentant and cruel bastards in those movies that it’s impossible to not walk away and be rightfully despising those characters.
Yet a movie where we can laugh with, or at least at, one of his creations? Again, only after winning his Oscar in 2016 has the thespian seemed to let his proverbial hair down, first in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time and now in Don’t Look Up. There is, indeed, much to snicker about DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in OUATIH, from the way he threatens to blow his own brains out during a drunken self-pity party in his trailer to how he’ll cry after a little girl tells him he really is a good actor. But at the end of the day, a film which plugs into the real-life horrors of the Sharon Tate murders can never be anything less than bittersweet.
So bring on a McKay laugher where DiCaprio can play one of the filmmakers’ many patented privileged white male douchebags with the fragility of a Ron Burgundy or Ricky Bobby! Let him and Lawrence improv like it’s bedtime at Brennan and Dale’s house in Step Brothers! Let these actors have fun. We certainly will.
