𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬- Addison—Caroline’s best friend—and Paige had been inseparable since the first day of freshman year. Their connection was immediate, a bond so strong it felt effortless. Over time, their friendship began to shift into something deeper, something neither of them could deny. They grew more intimate, and then they became official, it was good-great even- Until one random afternoon, everything unraveled. They “broke up”—a word they hadn’t even officially earned. Their fallout didn’t just affect them but the whole friend group. What happens when they are reunited?

Every month, the team and their close friends hosted a movie and board game night—an unspoken tradition that brought everyone together. Addison had been looking forward to this month’s gathering, counting down the days for an evening of laughter and familiarity. But everything had changed two weeks ago when she and Paige fell out. The rift had come out of nowhere, leaving Addison feeling disoriented and unsure of how to move forward. For the past two years, Paige had been a constant in her life—a rare anchor in a sea of unpredictability. Now, as Addison walked into the hangout for the first time since the fallout, her stomach twisted with anticipation.
She braced herself for the inevitable awkward reunion But what she wasn’t prepared for was seeing paige walking with someone else. The girl at her side—whose presence Paige didn’t bother to explain—sent a ripple of tension through the room, and Addison felt her composure crack. Her mood flipped instantly, and though she tried to mask her reaction, everyone could feel the shift in the air.
Addison knew her place in the group wasn’t dependent on her connection to Paige or even her friendship with Caroline. She belonged there. But tonight, everything felt off. Awkward. Forced. Despite Addison’s reluctance, Caroline had dragged her out, promising it would be fine. And now, here she was, sitting in the middle of a situation she hadn’t asked for. As Paige laughed with the mystery girl, Addison couldn’t take it anymore. She excused herself to the kitchen to grab her Pen and took hit after hit, she was already high as a kite and they had just gotten there.
As soon as Addison excused herself to the kitchen, Caroline and Azzi exchanged a look and made a quick, clumsy excuse to pull Paige into Azzi’s room.
“Paige, are you out of your mind? Who is that girl?” Azzi whisper-shouted, her frustration barely contained.
“Chill, Az. She’s just a girl I met in bio. We’ve been, like, talking or whatever,” Paige replied with a shrug and a laugh, entirely unbothered.
“Unreal. Paige Bueckers, you’re actually unreal,” Azzi said, shaking her head.
“What? Why? Because I’m not dropping everything for Addi—Addison?” Paige stammered, quickly correcting herself after nearly slipping into the old nickname.
“Paige, you could’ve at least told us! I convinced Addi to come, promising her you’d behave, and here you are pulling this!” Caroline snapped, throwing her hands in the air before storming out of the room.
Azzi followed, shaking her head once more, leaving Paige alone to roll her eyes and sigh.
Back in the living room, the night pressed on, though the tension was palpable. Ice had taken over the aux, playing her carefully curated playlist, while KK hopped on Instagram Live.
“Hey y’all! We’re chilling tonight—real low key vibes, you already know” KK said into her phone. “Ice is on aux, obviously. Aubrey, Carol, Yanna, and Nika are playing a game. Lili and Addi are making a TikTok. Oh, and P Boogers is here—everyone say hi!”
KK panned her phone around the room, stopping briefly on Paige, who awkwardly waved before shrugging the girl off her arm. Addison couldn’t help but laugh audibly, quickly covering her mouth to stifle it before returning to her TikTok.
Once Addison and Aaliyah finished their TikTok, Addison drifted back into the living room and took a seat across from Paige and the girl, whose name she’d finally learned was Cindy. She kept her distance, scrolling through her phone, trying to tune everything out. Paige, meanwhile, sat next to Cindy, their conversation seeming worlds away.
And then, it happened.
The opening notes of Les by Childish Gambino filled the room.
Addison froze, her heart skipping a beat. Of all the songs, it had to be this one. Their song. The soundtrack to late-night drives around campus, shared AirPods during gym sessions, and countless stolen moments. It was the song that seemed to follow them everywhere, the one that had somehow become theirs.
For the first time all night, Paige looked up, her gaze landing on Addison. Their eyes met, and for a fleeting second, the noise of the room fell away. The unspoken history between them hung heavy in the air. Paige shifted uncomfortably, her hand twitching toward her phone as if to distract herself, while Addison quickly looked away, and got up.
After a few moments—just enough time to avoid suspicion—Paige quietly followed Addison to her room. She hesitated for a beat before opening the door, finding Addison sitting on the floor next to her bed, knees pulled to her chest. The faint smell of smoke lingered in the air, and when Addison glanced up, her red, hazy eyes told Paige everything she needed to know.
Without saying a word, Paige closed the door behind her and sank to the floor beside Addison. The silence stretched between them, heavy and unyielding, until Paige finally broke it.
“You shouldn’t be smoking that,” she said softly, holding out her hand expectantly. “You told me you were quitting.”
Addison let out a humorless laugh, taking another drag before handing it over. “I was,” she said coldly. “But I got bored. Lost my distraction.”
Paige chuckled quietly, shaking her head. They sat in silence again, the weight of unsaid words pressing down on both of them. Finally, Addison cracked.
“Who’s that girl?” she asked, her voice sharp but her gaze steady on Paige.
Paige turned to her, laughing softly. “Everyone keeps asking me that tonight.”
“Well, it’s just… quick. A little too quick,” Addison said, her tone cutting. “I mean, I’m not surprised, but you didn’t answer. Who is she?”
Paige shrugged. “She’s just some girl from bio. I was at Ted’s, and she came up to me. Hasn’t really left me alone since.”
Addison scoffed, taking another hit despite Paige’s earlier protest. “If she means nothing to you, why is she here? Did you bring her just to make me upset?” Her voice rose slightly, anger bubbling to the surface.
“Addi, come on. You know I’d never do that,” Paige said, her tone soft but defensive. “I thought… I thought you’d moved on.”
Addison froze, the words hitting her harder than she expected. She exhaled slowly, her voice quieter now. “You know me better than that, Paige. I loved you too much to move on so fast.”
Paige reached out, her hand cupping Addison’s cheek, forcing her to meet her eyes. “Addi, I love you so much. You have to know that.”
Addison stood abruptly, pulling away from Paige’s touch. “Then why did you leave?” Her voice cracked, betraying the hurt she’d tried so hard to hide. “If you loved me so much, why didn’t you stay?”
Paige scrambled to her feet, her voice desperate now. “Baby, I thought you were pushing me away. I swear, if I’d known—”
“Pushing you away?” Addison interrupted, her voice breaking. “I did everything to keep you. You told me you needed space, so I gave you space. And then you broke up with me.” She paused, her eyes brimming with tears. “I never pushed you away, Paige.”
“Addison, out of everyone, you should understand,” Paige said, standing up, her voice firm but laced with frustration.
“Understand?” Addison scoffed, her voice cracking as she rose to face her. “Paige, it was two years of dating—two years—and almost four years of being close. Do you even understand what it felt like to lose you? You weren’t just my girlfriend, you were my constant. One of the only constants I had these past couple of years. And then we broke up…”
Her voice faltered as she tried to steady herself. “I was so hurt, Paige. For the first week, I kept telling myself I could never love someone the way I loved you. That I could never care for someone the way I cared for you. And now, a week later, you’re already moved on? You’ve been seeing this new girl for what, at least a week? That’s insane.”
Paige took a deep breath, stepping closer to Addison, who crossed her arms protectively. “Addi, listen to me,” Paige said, her voice softer now, trying to break through the wall Addison had built.
“No, Paige. Don’t ‘Addi’ me,” Addison shot back, her tone sharp despite the tears welling in her eyes. “You don’t get to walk back in here like nothing happened. Like you didn’t just—”
“I didn’t move on!” Paige interrupted, her voice rising before it softened again. “I didn’t move on, okay? She’s just… she’s not you. She’ll never be you.” Paige ran a hand through her hair, exhaling shakily. “Do you think this has been easy for me? Do you think I haven’t missed you every second of every day?”
Addison blinked, her composure cracking further. “Then why, Paige? If you missed me so much, why did you leave? Why did you give up on us?”
Paige stepped closer, cautiously reaching out to take Addison’s hands. At first, Addison resisted, but Paige’s touch was warm and grounding, and she didn’t pull away. “I didn’t leave because I didn’t care, Addi. I left because I thought you were slipping away from me. I thought you were unhappy, that I wasn’t enough for you. And I didn’t know how to fix it.”
Addison shook her head, her voice trembling. “I wasn’t slipping away, Paige. I was scared of losing you, and I didn’t know how to show it. And then you—” Her voice broke as tears finally spilled over.
Paige gently pulled Addison into a hug, wrapping her arms around her as Addison’s walls came crashing down. “I’m so sorry,” Paige whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I was scared too. I didn’t know what to do, and I messed everything up. But I never stopped loving you. Not for a second.”
Addison buried her face in Paige’s shoulder, her tears soaking into Paige’s shirt. “It doesn’t feel like that,” she mumbled.
Paige pulled back slightly, cupping Addison’s face so their eyes met. “I know it doesn’t. And I know I can’t undo the hurt I caused, but Addi, please… let me try to make it right. Let me show you how much you mean to me.”
For a moment, Addison just stared at her, the anger and hurt still raw but softened by the vulnerability in Paige’s eyes. Finally, she nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. “You broke my heart, Paige. You have to know that.”
“I do,” Paige said, her voice steady, “and I’ll spend as long as it takes proving to you that I’ll never do it again.”
