You’ll love Bug Guard

It’s bug season again and if you plan on spending any time outside then you are going to need at least two things: Bug repellent and sunscreen. Lucky for you Avon has a long trusted solution to both. Take a look at Avon Bug Guard.

Let’s discuss the two types of bug repellent Avon uses; IR3535® and Picaridin.

Both of these compounds are considered safer than DEET while IR3535® is recommended for children even though both show to not absorb into the skin very much on humans which is a good thing. 

IR3535®

First up is IR3535®, also known as Insect Repellent 3535 or Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate, what a name. IR3535® is effective against Mosquitoes, ticks,  flies, fleas and lice. The structure of IR3535® is based on alanine and beta-alanine that is functionally identical to beta-alanine making it safe to use for humans and animals, though on animals it can cause mild skin irritation.

The idea for this compound was taken from nature and specifically plants that produce essential oils for combating insect infestations. After more than 30 years of investigating its use found that it is quite skin friendly and has a high safety rating. It is often found in products made for children.

Picaridin

Icaridin, also known as Picariden, KBR 3023 or the INCI, International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients if you care, name hydroxyethyl isobutyl piperidine. In many studies has shown to be as effective or more effective than DEET without the skin irritation often acquired with DEET.

Picaridin was created by Bayer. Picariding is a chemical family of piperidine. Piperidine is what gives pepper it’s fantastic strong smell. Consumer Reports did a study in 2016 that found it was one of the most effective insect repellents when used at 20% concentration or more.

Picaridin like IR3535® and DEET do not kill insects but rather repel and deter them so that they don’t bite you. Picaridin and DEET both create a vapor barrier that keeps the small creatures from landing on you to harvest or infect your precious life blood. 

As with any product read the label before use to make sure you are using enough and in the correct places to maximize protection.

TO USE  • Apply liberally and evenly over exposed skin • Ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age • For continued protection, reapply about every two hours or sooner if effectiveness diminishes; not to exceed nine applications per day for sunscreen protection • Reapply after 80 minutes in the water or after excessive perspiration or prolonged activity

  Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535® SPF 30 Cool ‘n Fabulous Disappearing Color Lotion

Gear toward children this product Effectively repels mosquitoes, deer ticks, black flies, sand flies, gnats, no-seeums and biting midges. Blue color shows where applied, then disappears onto skin. 4 fl. oz.

BENEFITS  • Repels mosquitos that may transmit West Nile Virus • Deters and Repels deer ticks that may transmit Lyme Disease • Repels mosquitoes, deer ticks, black flies, sand flies, gnats, no-seeums and biting midges • Provides SPF 30 protection • PABA-free and DEET-free • Non-greasy • Vitamin E and Aloe • Pediatrician tested

TO USE  • Apply liberally and evenly over exposed skin • Ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age • Avoid eye area when applying to face • For continued protection, reapply about every two hours or sooner if effectiveness diminishes not to exceed nine applications per day for sunscreen protection • Reapply after 80 minutes in the water or after excessive perspiration or prolonged activity

  Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535® Expedition™ SPF 30 Pump Spray

BENEFITS  • Provides effective protection against gnats, mosquitoes, deer ticks, no-seeums, sand flies, and biting midges • Deters and Repels mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile Virus • Repels deer ticks that may transmit Lyme Disease • DEET-free • Hypoallergenic  • Dermatologist tested

TO USE  • Apply evenly before sun and insect exposure. An adult must apply this product to children under 10. • Ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age • For continued protection from mosquitoes, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges, reapply after 8 hours • To assure continued protection from deer ticks, reapply after 6 hours and from black flies, reapply after 3 hours • For sunscreen protection, reapply as needed or after towel drying, swimming or sweating • Do not exceed 4 applications per day

Bug Guard Plus IR3535® is also available in an Aerosol Spray with just a couple differences such as SPF 28 rather than 30 and is unscented. The reason it is 28 rather than 30 has to do with how Aerosol works. In the bottle it is SPF 30 but when it comes out and clings to your skin it is rated at 28 and Avon likes to stay honest about such things.

Strong and dependable repellency against mosquitoes, deer ticks, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges. 4 fl. oz.

BENEFITS  • Repels a broad spectrum of biting insects (mosquitoes, deer ticks, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges) • Deters and Repels mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile Virus • Repels deer ticks that may transmit Lyme Disease • Needs to be washed off when coming in from the outdoors • DEET-free • Oil-free  • Dermatologist tested 

TO USE  • Hold container 6 to 8 inches from skin and spray with a slow sweeping motion, liberally and evenly. Do not spray in enclosed areas. Do not apply under clothing, on cuts, wounds, freshly shaved, excessively sunburned, or irritated skin • Be sure to ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age • For protection from gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges, reapply after 6 hours. For mosquitoes reapply after 8 hours • Protect from black flies by reapplying after 3 hours  • Do not exceed 2 applications per day

  Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Picaridin Towelettes

These little babies are a crowd pleaser and super handy. You can keep them in your purse or emergency kit and always have effective bug repellent on hand.

Strong and dependable repellency against mosquitoes, deer ticks, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges. Resealable bag holds 8 packets. Each towelette, 9″ L x 5 1/2″ W. Each, 0.3 fl. oz.

BENEFITS • Deters and Repels a broad spectrum of biting insects (mosquitoes, deer ticks, gnats, no-seeums, sand flies and biting midges) • Repels mosquitoes that may transmit West Nile Virus • Shows deer ticks that may transmit Lyme Disease the door • Needs to be washed off when coming in from the outdoors • DEET-free • Oil-free • Dermatologist tested
