Personality through quotes
Thanks to @elsie-writes here and @mk-writes-stuff here!
Rules: provide a quote from an OC given a prompt
A quote about magic
Lexi: "I've always been a bit skeptical of the existence of magic. Personally, I think it's more beautiful and wonderful if things we consider magic are just nature or humanity. Alium is just an alternate reality where magic exists, but even then it's not really magic. Just different science."
Maddie: "Magic doesn't exist. Even in Alium, it's just science."
Ash: "It's classic to say magic is just science we don't understand, and I agree. Science is so fascinating. Studying telepathy as a science is interesting."
Gwen: "Just because you understand something as a science doesn't mean it's not magic. Magic is about wonder. Even in Ceteri, there are many wonderful, magical things to appreciate."
Robbie: "I kinda agree with Gwen here. I'm in the robotics elective at my school, and watching the little guys move... Boom, magic. Ash and Maddie are in their school's robotics club, and they tell me I shouldn't anthropomorphize the robots, but I can't help it!"
Akash: "Not sure about magic, but once in a lifetime friendships that rely on chance meeting is pretty close to it. In fact, anything amazing that happens by chance feels like magic, to an extent."
Jedi: "Alium does not have magic, per se, but there are many fascinating things about our world we do not understand. The revolution around our birthdays--two random ones at that. The existence of dragons. The workings of the portal. I wouldn't say magic is just science we don't understand, but science is in of itself magic because there's no reason for it to work the way it does other than the universe itself."
Carmen: "Pfft, we're debating magic again? Magic doesn't exist. Grow up."
A quote about the weather
Lexi: "I guess I'm glad I'm used to hoodies and don't get warm easily. Houston weather can get pretty warm and humid, especially in the summer."
Maddie: "I wish it didn't get so hot in the summer. I'd go outside a lot more than I do. I do enjoy watching the downpour through my bedroom window. Though when lightning strikes and takes out our power...that sucks. But it's kinda fun, in a way."
Ash: "I really like going outside when it's overcast. Sunburn and heatstroke is lower, and it's just generally nice to be outside without the sun ruining your vision. Thunderstorms are also super cool."
Gwen: "I feel like if I was born in a different family, I'd hate the outside. Staying in my room with a book sounds nice. But my family has a perfect place for a natural hike we go to near our house. So sometimes I read on the back porch swing. I like it when there's a nice breeze but not strong enough to where it blows the pages shut."
Robbie: "Life hack - avoid bad weather by never going outside! Unfortunately my parents are doctors and make Sammy and me go outside for Vitamin... Uh, C? It's C, right? Not confident about that. Whichever one it is, Sammy and I have prescribed Outside Time."
Akash: "If mobility isn't an issue, I like being outside. Warm, bright, sunny days with soft breezes are epic. Could be out there for hours. No need for prescribed Outside Time."
Jedi: "Hm? Oh, weather is nice, yes." (Goes back to his work)
Carmen: "... Weather sucks. I would much rather spend my days inside. I definitely don't miss walking through the forest and seeing all the plants and animals. Recognizing certain individual creatures. Enjoying the breeze. The warmth... It's stupid, is what it is."

Low-Key Haikus 6: Bringing the Heat
Haiku silliness after the break. There are haikus hidden in the haikus. A couple of creative liberties were taken for syllable count and phrasing (e.g. yes, I know the phrase in a hidden haiku is supposed to be "Whoa, Nellie!").
Immolation now The sun burns out all of life Typical August
Time for a long dip Swimming in the afternoon Pool of cool water
Searing heat burns all The rocks boil and trees wilt Hurray for A/C
Air conditioning Blessed extraction of heat Boo: power outage
Melting ice cream cone Dripping all over the place A sticky delight
Icebergs melting down High temperatures persist Where is the winter?
Lubrication on Sunscreen deflects the UV Sunburn protection
Dries, the sun, it does Boils the swamp to nothing Heatstroke for Yoda
Smoke means fire, they say Hot weather means drier fuel Bear says, “Only you.”
Until fall, no reprieve Shovel snow cone to beat heat Glorious brain freeze
Mealtime has arrived Fruits, yogurt, and sandwiches Fare for the hot days
Meat: grilled perfection Juicy flesh encased in crust Texas barbecue
Enflamed surroundings Puffy dark clouds rolling in Blessed thunderstorm
Right to the river Fishing, splashing, marshmallows Tent under the stars
Oh, thunderous blast! Colors sparkle in the night Fireworks explode bright
Nellie nips at feet Chasing kids into water Doggo beats the heat
Lips meet lemonade Cool, sweet, and tart: perfection The simple pleasures
Yearning for better Oppressive heat reminds us Of His still waters
To hell and then back Grocery run for dessert Popsicles melted
Eat outside with friends Laughter and games, food and drink Work days forgotten
Never hike alone Carry plenty of water Heatstroke is deadly
Thinking of degrees The warmth of the Father’s love, Or the lake of fire?
Hard, cold ice in cups Filled with bubbly soda pop Sweet, sweet refreshment
Outside burns all life Armageddon comes for all O summer afternoon
Usually we hide To avoid the heated air Inside with cool fans
Swimming at the pool Diving and cannonballs, ho! The children giggle
Also dreading school Summer days are flying by Time flies on fun
Needing vacation The waves of the beach call forth Road trip is inbound
Drinks cool heated soul Restores dehydrated flesh Wonderful fluids
Draining streams flood curb Thunder, lightning, and raindrops Fresh scent of cool air
Energy for fan Stuffy air now in full breeze Electric goodness
Grief in afternoon Hot sun beats on laborers Sweat and tears to live
Reaching for the stars Crickets chirping in concert Lazy summer night
Extremities burn Unrelenting sun cooks all Soothing aloe heals
Executing: dive Modulation: forward flip Error: belly flop
Shade shields the sun’s rays Hottest days made bearable Rest stop for walkers
Maybe the heat sucks Summer still holds its treasures Certain points of view
Use caution with fire Roasted marshmallows are good Burnt fingers, not so
Sunscreen: good for skin No sunscreen: may cause cancer Like everything else
Tanning on the beach Waves are crashing; lulled to sleep Now, extra crispy
Has the brisket smoked? Bring the sides, set the table Tasty meal for all
Applications in Summer jobs for college kids Funds for having fun
Very hot today is Refreshing swamp cooler is Drink green Muppet needs
Effective cool breeze Opened windows admit air Chaotic chimes ring
Another scorcher Concrete jungle burns hotter Windows up, air on
Scorcher coming up Triple digits, stay inside Excuse for ice cream
Nighttime thunderstorms Flashes of light, deep rumbles Refreshing raindrops
Only six months away Jolly fat man and reindeer If it would just snow
Will umbrella help? Drink tasty with or without Pina colada
Cool desserts are great Whether the world burns right now Or during winter
Off sprayed on the arms Blood-sucking insects begone Buffet I am not
Not long is the night Brief respite from the sun’s rays Starry sky wonder
Enjoyable vacay Lots to do and things to see Never long enough

Sick puppet
Miles Kane x reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not my gif , credits to the maker!
Summary: After two years of dodging covid, it was finally your turn once you were in Ibiza with your boyfriend, Miles for his new videoclip. You had no other choice than to give Miles the permission to take fully care of you.
Warnings: covid and all the symptoms along with it and small mention of smut.
Words: 5,1K
A/N: Might make a part 2 with the pool party!
Sick puppet
You were in Ibiza with your boyfriends Miles Kane. The plan was to shoot his music video there: Blame it on the summertime. Covid was still very much alive and going but the restrictions were lifted. For all these two years you’ve managed to avoid them. You would be the one to edit the video for Miles and be a co-director for the videoclip, alongside act in it. Miles hired a pretty big villa and you finally felt alive again.
Getting enough vitamin D as it felt like the sun kissed your skin. God did you needed to get out of rainy London. You felt alive and energetic again. You were filming with the director when your coughing started. You figured that it was your body, finally relaxing, it wouldn’t be new for your to get sick on vacation. Miles looked concerned at you and you waved it off even though you started sweating more than normal and you felt very hot but blamed it on the weather.
After a day of shooting, you felt completely wreaked. Your muscles felt sore and you had cramps in your stomach. You were cooling off by the beach. You just took a dip in the ocean and felt a little refreshed but not too much. You laid back on the towel and let the sun hug your body. Miles just got out of the water and you couldn’t help but stare with a smile, which he returned cheekily. He laid down next to you. “Watcha lookin at babe?” he teased you. “Just the most handsome turtle that just got washed up on shore.” You teased back with a smirk while Miles cackled. It was a good day today. The filming went absolutely fantastic and you knew Miles was hyped for it and wanted to celebrate but you felt worse and worse.
“Babe! Ya wanna go and ave dinner somewhere and have a few drinks after that?” Miles asked you hyper after a while , knowing you wouldn’t pass on that, but as soon as you made eye contact with your loving boyfriend, he knew something was wrong. “Babe are ya alright?” He asked you while softly rubbing your arms. You really wanted to go and once again, didn’t think much of your symptoms so you played it off.
“Yeah, I think I just need some food and I haven’t been drinking enough water than I should for standing so long in the sun.” Miles still frowned. He handed you his water bottle. “Drink this up luv, don’t want ya avin a heatstroke on meh.” He told you concerned as you chugged the water bottle. “There we go luv. I’ll giva ya another glass when we get home.” He told you while standing up, not wanting you to be in the sun longer than you’ve already been.
He packed your stuff along with his and held your hand while you climbed the rocks to get to the villa. It always felt like a hike when you left the villa. Miles helped you at some tricky parts as he held your hand and helped you get off the rocks so you wouldn’t fall. You started sweating more than you normally would, which Miles noticed but decided not to bring it up.
When you finally arrived at the villa, Miles gave you another glass of water before you both walked into the room and got changed for the night. You felt worse and worse with the minute but ignored it. You and Miles were done and you chugged another glass of water before leaving the villa. You walked hand in hand through town and saw some restaurants besides the beach. Miles pointed it out and you smiled at how relaxing it looked. You decided to go there.
You wanted to sit down but Miles stopped you midway. “No luv, I don’t want ya in tha sun right now.” You smiled at how caring Miles was as he helped you in the chair like a gentleman, perfectly in the shadow. “I luv ya in tha sun darlin, but not tonight.” He told you with a cheeky smile as he held your hand from across the table. You both ordered sangria and the food you wanted while chatting. Miles still kept a close eye on you. He knew you through and through and you weren’t acting like your usual self-right now even though you tried.
You watched the sunset together and it felt extremely romantic while some deep house was played in the background. After dinner you met up with the crew that helped with filming. You all sat down at a beach club before going to the actual club. Miles got some mojito’s and you had some more sangria. Miles noticed you got more and more silent, so he rested his hand on your thigh to give you some comfort. This was completely the opposite from you and it concerned Miles.
After sitting there for a while you moved to the club and you got very anti-social at this point where even the crew noticed that something was going on. Your coughing got worse along side your runny nose even though you still played it off, not thinking too much of it. It was how you were raised. After a while Miles got very concerned to the point that he was ready to pull the plug and go home.
“Sweeteart, let’s go home ya? I know ya not feelin well.” he told you but you were so used to take care of yourself and not be a bother to anyone that you played it off once again. Miles knew about how independent you were and he liked it but he didn’t like it when you wouldn’t let him take care of you like he wanted to.
“Miles, this is your evening, stay! I’ll be fine. How about I text you when I arrive at the villa?” you tried to rearrange something with him like it was even up for discussion. Miles chuckled softly at your attempt and rolled his eyes slightly at your stubbornness. Luckily he was used to stubborn people thanks to Alex. “Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. I wanna take care of meh favorite girl. Let me.” he told you. “Mi, I’m fine. Enjoy your night, I’ll be okay.” He chuckled more at your attempt. “Luv, I won’t enjoy my night if ya not next to meh, besides ya’re not feelin fine at all. Tha only thing I wanna do right now is takin care of ya, and it’s not up for debate. So get ya pretty ass movin hot stuff.” He told you teasingly and you knew Miles wasn’t going to budge so you gave in as it already costs you too much energy.
You were just not used for people taking care of you and stuff. You’ve always done that yourself so it could sometimes be very hard for you to accept Miles’s caring side since he was the complete opposite. But that was also why it worked between the two of you, learning so much from each other.
Miles helped you on the rocks again and you were deuterating very quickly. “Jump on meh back luv.” He told you and helped you to stand on a rock so you could easier get on his back. He carried you towards the villa while you shined your flashlight on the stones so he could see where he was going. You arrived at the villa and he carefully let you slide of his back next to the pool. Your cramps got worse and you started to get a headache as well. Miles got a permanent frown between his eyebrows from concern.
He helped you inside when you got a coughing attack and started to sneeze. Miles frowned once again while he softly rubbed your back and handed you a glass of water. He got a covid test out of the cabinets and gave it to you. Miles had it a month ago or so, so he couldn’t get it again just yet. You did the test and it came back very soon on positive. Miles looked at you sympathetically. “Alright babe, let’s get ya to bed. ya’ve already done too much.” He told you softly. “No Mi! You could get it too.” You told him and got out of his grip. His got a hurtful expression on his face once you didn’t let him touch you. “Babe, I’ve had it just a month ago. Besides I’ve been around ya for a while… I should ave it too then but I don’t so I’m safe. Just let meh take care of ya now.” he told you and you could just cry. All you wanted was for Miles to cuddle you now and give you the comfort you needed.
You agreed and placed your arms around his waist, just wanted to feel him right now. He placed his arms around you as well and went with his hand over your hair, placing kisses on your head. After a while he helped you up the stairs and you were already out of breath. Miles helped you out of your clothes and put one of his shirts on you, laid you down on the bed.
You sniffled, feeling utterly miserable. Miles got freshened up and crawled in next to you. Your arms were immediately around Miles. He chuckled softly, knowing you would get very clingy for the couple of days and he loved it when you accepted his care. He just wished that you wouldn’t feel as bad as you did. He wrapped his arms around you as well and let your head rest on his chest while petting your head. He placed his hand on your forehead and felt you burning up. “Wait a minute luv.” He told you, giving you a kiss on your forehead before getting up out of bed again.
He opened the window and put the fan on, hoping it would cool you down. He remembered when you would take care of him when he had covid and the other multiple times which was more than he could count on his hands and now it was finally his turn to take care of you. He crawled back besides you while you curled up in a ball, hoping it would ease the cramps. He carefully pulled you against his body and wrapped his arms around you once again and carefully pulled your head on his chest. He softly rubbed your back in a calming manner, letting you fall asleep fair quickly.
~time skip~
You woke up from something cold against your head. You opened your eyes slowly, followed by a cough. You sat up quickly and had a coughing fit. Miles sat next to you, rubbing your back again. After you calmed down a little you let yourself lay down on the bed again from exhaustion. You looked at Miles who had a soft comforting smile on his face. He held a washcloth against your head since your fever got higher. “Goodmornin luv. Ya had a rough night. Ad to wake ya a couple of times from nightmares” he told you while he went with his other hand over your hair. “I’m sorry I woke you.” your voice sounded extremely hoarse and it was very unpleasant to talk, which Miles picked up on.
“Sshhh it’s okay luv. Don’t worry about it. I just want ya to be fine or at least comfortable.” He told you and you gave him a tired smile “I’m gonna run to tha store real quick and get ya some stuff. Ya get some sleep and I’ll be back before ya know it.” he told you while placing a loving kiss on your forehead. “Thank you Mi.” you whispered, unable to speak louder. “Everythin for meh favorite girl eh?! It’s meh turn to take care of ya know!” he told you teasingly, trying to get a giggle out of you but you felt too miserable to do so.
“I’ll be right back luv, get some more rest.” he told you softly again, giving you a kiss on your head and placed the washing cloth on your forehead before he left the room. You tried to fall asleep but needed to pee so you stood up to get to the bathroom, only to be met with a lot of dizziness and lightheadedness. You held yourself up by the wall and went to the bathroom to get a little freshened up and got out of breath again. You felt exhausted by just your trip to the bathroom so you walked back into bed and fell asleep again very quickly.
Miles came back in the villa with a lot of fruit, juices, painkillers and more stuff to get you better. He made some tea for you and put some lemon in cold water along with some mint. He made a bowl of fresh fruit and 2 crackers for you before walking up stairs again. He saw your form underneath the covers, once again you were curled up in a ball and he almost didn’t have the heart to wake you. He looked at you for a while, contemplating on to wake you or not. You started coughing really bad in your sleep so Miles decided to wake you and at least give you the painkillers.
“Honey? Wake up sweeteart.” He whispered softly as he brushed some hair out of your face and placed kisses on your head. You opened your eyes, once again getting a coughing fit. Miles never stopped rubbing your back in order to give you some comfort at least. Once you stopped coughing so much, Miles spoke up: “I made ya some breakfast, tea and water. Try tha eat sometin luv.” He told you as you tried to sit up, which he helped you with.
He got the pillow more up so you could sit against it. He placed the tray on your lap and got up to open the doors of the balcony to let some fresh air in. You looked horrible, absolutely miserable and Miles just looked at you in sympathy, wanting to take the sickness over. He sat next to you and placed some strings of hair out of your face. “Let meh help ya, get a shower after this. Might do ya some good and after we can watch some trash British tv show” He told you as you started eating the fresh fruit, nodding but already out of breath from just eating.
You took the painkillers with the lemon water, Miles made for you. He even dropped some oranges in it for more vitamin. You sniffled while drinking your tea. “I’m sorry Mi.” you told him as he frowned at your statement. “For wha babe?” you shrugged “Being sick and all.” He chuckled softly as he shook his head. “Babe, it’s not ya fault. Ya can’t help it. Besides, now I finally get the chance to take care of ya!” he told you, trying to take away your guilty feeling which worked a little.
“When ya feel a bit better or ave more energy, we can sit outside but for now, you just need to rest babe.” He told you softly while his knuckles softly brushed your cheek. You gave him a smile and he gave you a quick peck on your lips. You started to lean against Miles as you sipped your tea. He wrapped his arm around you and let you rest against him.
Once you finished your tea, Miles helped you to the bathroom and put the shower on a nice temperature. “I’m gonna chance the sheets real quick. I’ll be right back babe.” He told you once you got underneath the shower. You nodded and started to wash your hair. It didn’t took him long before he returned and sat down on the toilet seat to keep an eye on you and help you once you got out.
He held out a towel for you as you climbed out of the shower. He gave you a hand so you wouldn’t slip and wrapped the towel around your body before pulling you into a hug. He let you dry up like that. He sat down on the towel seat again and pulled you in his lap so you didn’t have to use so much energy. While you sat on his lap he wrapped his arms tightly around you and rocked you softly from side to side as the water dropped down on his legs. He kept placing kisses on the side of your head which you rested against him and tucked it underneath his chin. “We’ll get ya better babe, don’t worry.” He whispered softly, placing a kiss on your temple.
You nodded as speaking was just unpleasant. You didn’t want to get up from this intimate and loving moment but you really wanted to lay down and Miles picked up on that. “Let’s get a kimono on ya, huh babe?” he offered. You stood up and he helped you into your panties and his kimono’s on before sitting you down on the toilet again. “Ya gonna ave to help me with ya skincare babe… Which one do I use first?” he asked you while looking through your stuff. You chuckled slightly at your caring and loving boyfriend.
You pointed out the moisturizer and a serum. He got the stuff and sat down in front of you. He got some on his slender finger and put it on your face before gently rubbing it in. You smiled at the loving gesture of Miles. “All done babe.” He told you and gave you a quick kiss on your nose and helped you up, leading you to the bedroom. He had completely opened the doors of the balcony and put the curtains away to let some sunlight in. You looked at the freshly made bed and could just cry from appreciation.
Miles heard you sniffle but in a different way, making him look at you in concern. Once he saw you cry he made you sit down on the bed and crouched down, letting his hands rest on your knees. “Babe, what’s wrong?” he asked you softly. The care and love radiating from his eyes, made you cry just even more. “You.” You told him, making him even more concerned as sadness glaced his eyes “Do ya want some time alone? I’m sorry, I just wanted tha help ya.” You quickly shook your head and held his hands as you chuckled slightly.
“No, I just appreciate this so much. I’ve never felt this loved and cared for in my entire life. Thank you.” His eyes got even softer as sympathy was written over his face along with relief. “Aww bahabe.” He told you and sat next to you, pulling you into his lap again as he held you tightly. “Ya deserve all the love in tha world. I love ya so much.” He told you while comforting you. “I’m sorry for crying.” you told him, feeling silly but Miles immediately shook his head. “Don’t ever apologize for gettin emotional babe. Not with me nor anyone else. Ya feelins are valid ya’know. don’t hide ‘m.” he told you and you felt so loved by Miles.
He really tried to fix everything that broke you and you loved him for that, his patience and reassurance meant the world to you. You leaned your head against him. “Thank you turtle. I love you too, so much.” He chuckled at his nickname and kissed your head again. “Let’s watch some trash tv huh?” he asked you as he scooped against the headrest with you still in his lap. He turned the tv on and gave you the remote. You and Miles loved to watch trash tv and it wasn’t even a secret pleasure anymore. It helped the both of you to turn your brain off for a moment.
You decided on ex on the beach and let Miles cuddle you. “I’ve never been happier in my life with you in it.” you told him all of a sudden and his eyes softened again. “Same here luv. Ya really mean tha world to meh. I’d do everythin to make ya happy.” You held on a bit tighter on to Miles and after a while he made you lay down on his chest, seeing that you got more sleepy. He looked at you lovingly as you drooled on his shirt, clinging it in your hand as well. Even while you were drooling on his favorite shirt, his love for you grew.
This went on for about two days. Miles made you breakfast, lunch and dinner, making sure it was healthy. Brought you fresh fruit, even cutting it in hearts for you, made more lemon water and gave you painkillers and vitamin to get you better. After the third day, you became restless for staying in bed for so long and wanted to get outside in the sun. Miles laid next to you on a sunbed, texting Alex while you read a book.
Alex was in Ibiza as well and wanted to have a little get together but Miles told him that you had covid and didn’t want him to get it as well. Alex completely understood and whished you a fast and soon recovery while you told him that once you got better that you and Miles would throw a pool party. Luckily he would be a while in Ibiza just like you and Miles and still had enough time to see each other.
You enjoyed the sun on your skin as you felt your muscles started to relax which helped with the pain. Miles put some music on and you felt ten times better and decided to go through the clips that you had shot a couple of days ago. You started editing and you were always pretty fast with that and was almost done in two hours. Miles thought you were writing, which you did a lot too but when you called him, he was surprised to see the almost finishing results from the clip. He looked at you in awe “Babe, ya didn’t ave to do that. Ya still sick.” He told you and you shrugged. “I felt up for it.” you told him with a smile and he placed his hand on the side of your head and kissed your temple and cheek.
“Want to see it?” you asked happily and unable to hide your excitement. “Of course!” You played the video and Miles couldn’t get the grin of his face while yelling so now and then “Yeah baby! This looks fantastic! This is mega!” and “Ya’re amazin babe! Oh my god, this looks so good!” You smiled at his enthusiasm. You had also wrote the script with Miles for what he wanted and he trusted your vision on it. “Babe, this is amazin! I want you for every videoclip!” you chuckled at his excitement. He held your hands. “nah, I mean it babe! This is mega!” as his smile got even bigger, peppering your face with kisses. “I wanna post it!” you chuckled “It’s not finished yet Mi. I still have to make the edit the colors and stuff.” he chuckled, letting you know how excited he was. “Alright but I am gonna film it for meh insta.” He told you, making you agree as it was a smart move to do anyways.
He filmed your computer and after that you, his famous laugh going over the music while you laughed once the camera was pinned to you. “Imma save this. Ya look cute in this.” he told you, forgetting the videoclip. Miles loved to show you off and let everyone know that you were his and it made you feel very confident and loved. You both made a selfie and he posted it to his Instagram. He got up “I’m gonna make dinner babe. Ya’re amazin!” he told you, kissing your lips. “I’ll finish it tomorrow, I’m a little tired now.” you told him “Babe, you’ve done more than enouf! Take some rest, ya deserve it!” he told you as you closed your laptop.
You started to read until you got bored and looked what Miles was making. He had music playing in the background while apparently making paella. He was dancing a little and you leaned against the door with a loving smile. Miles turned around and immediately smiled when he saw you. He reached out his hand for you to take so he could dance with you. You chuckled while he carefully spined you around. Once he noticed that you got a little out of breath again he sat you down on the kitchen counter and stood between your legs, which you wrapped around his waist, making him chuckle. He nuzzled your nose and gave you a chaste kiss.
“How about we throw that pool party next week? As a sort of release party for your videoclip?” you suggested and he got a big smile “That’s a mega idea babe!” he told you happily. He praised you for how smart you were which made you giggle which just made him continue. He loved to see you laugh and smile and knowing that he was the reason for it. He just wanted to make you feel good and loved when knowing that he could.
“Dinner is almost ready, why don’t ya sit outside and let me do the table?” you got off from the counter while Miles kept his hands on your waist to help you get off the counter. You wanted to take something with you but Miles got it out of your hands. “I got it babe. Ya still sick!” you chuckled at how caring he could be. You placed a kiss on his cheek, making him smile and blush slightly as you walked outside.
It got dark outside and the fairy lights that hang above the table went on. Miles got the speaker with him so you could listen to music outside while carrying two white wines outside. He got in and outside again with more stuff until everything was ready and sat down opposite you. He got your hand in his and placed a kiss on the back of your hand, making you feel flustered. “I’m glad ya feel a bit better.” He told you as you smiled “Thank to you!” this time you saw that Miles got shy and you loved having that effect on him. He was completely smitten with you, even Alex told you a while back that he never saw him like this and gave you credit for making his best friend feel so good.
You started eating until Miles spoke. “So I got some songs finished….” You looked up in surprise. “I can’t wait to hear them!” you told him. He knew you were a fan of his music, way before you actually met each other in real life. “I actually made a song about ya.” He told you a little unsure of your reaction. You were in awe “Really?” he chuckled and nodded. “I can play it for ya after dinner if ya want to?” you was still unsure of your reaction “You know I’ll never say no to that.” He chuckled and was still a little shy about. “What’s the title for the song?” you asked. “I’ll never get tired of dancing.”
He told you, making you even more curious. “Now you’re just teasing me.” you told him, acting, terrible bad, as if you were mad as Miles cackled at your reaction. You finished dinner and wanted to hear the song. He cleaned up the table and when you tried to help, he made you sit down again. “You can help once ya fully better.” He told you as you chuckled.
He finally got you out of suspense when he came outside with his guitar and the wine bottle which was already halfway finished. He sat opposite you and started playing while looking at you while he sang the lyrics. You felt so flustered and shy as your cheeks kept heating up. Back in the day when you had a crush on him and he didn’t even knew you excited yet, you dreamed of a moment like this and now it was happening. You felt even more shy as the sang further. The lyrics hitting you and you couldn’t wipe away the bright smile on your face which was apparently contagious.
After he was done, you were at lost for words. “I… I love it so much Mi! You make me shy.” You chuckled a little, not knowing how to behave right now. You stood up and got his guitar out of his hands, placing it carefully beside him. He was waiting for what you were about to do. You sat down in his lap, sideways and placed your arms around his neck and he automatically placed his arms around your waist as a response. “No one could ever make me feel this special except for you. I really love it Miles.” He smiled brightly “That’s all tha matters to meh.” He told you honestly. You kissed him passionately and before things could turn more heated he stopped you. “Ya still sick! I don’t want ya doing things while ya still sick!” he told you laughing at your attempt.
“But I feel a bit better!” you tried to debate, making him cackle even louder. “A bit better, isn’t fully better babe! And even though, I love that activity with ya, we’ll do it when ya fully better. Ya troublemaker!” You grinned at the nickname he just gave you. “Now stop tryin, cause I won’t budge.” He told you and you knew he wasn’t. “Okay, okay.” You told him and wanted to get off of his lap but he pulled you back. “That doesn’t mean that you can’t sit on meh lap. I like it when ya sit on meh lap.” He told you, kissing your cheek.
“Let’s finish this wine and get into bed for some more trash tv huh? How does that sound?” he suggested. “That sounds good.” He got a bright smile, which you returned. “God I love you so much.” You told him with a big smile while you stared at him. He chuckled slightly as he looked down, his cheeks already turning pink. “And I love you babe.” Making sure the tone on you was hearable.
You didn’t mind being sick but only if Miles would be by your side. He really is your sunshine and you are his.

Bull/f!Adaar - “i’m so hot..” “loving the confidence.” “oh shut up.” - because I feel like I can hear that in their voices and it could be cute.
Thank you!! Absolutely feeling this prompt because it’s been so hot where I live this week.
Rating: G
Word Count: 428
Pairing: f!Adaar/The Iron Bull
@dadrunkwriting
If Herah Adaar never saw a single grain of sand again, she would die a happy woman. Trekking through the Western Approach was worse, she decided, than falling out of the fade, waking up in an interrogation cell, and being asked to lead an inquisition. It was also worse than nearly losing an eye to a Tevinter cultist or being mauled by a bear, both of which she was now qualified to evaluate. It was worse, even, than facing down a Chantry Mother in the center of Val Royeaux. Simply put, it was awful.
“Coming?” Bull asked from a higher ledge. They were pulling themselves painstakingly up a cliffside, and Adaar had paused to take a swig of water from her bag. She still couldn’t believe they were climbing closer to the sun.
“I’m so hot,” she grit out as she stepped up next to him, taking his offered hand.
“Loving the confidence.”
“Oh, shut up.”
He grinned at her—how did he have the energy to grin after hiking through the desert all day? It had to be the Par Vollen heat tolerance. She was starting to get why he went shirtless, and why these new Qunari robes hardly covered anything. Extra armor took a back seat to not dying of heatstroke.
Varric and Dorian were waiting when they got to the top, leaning back on the rock and sipping from their canteens.
“There’s an entrance to a cave up ahead,” Dorian said. “If I had to guess, that would be the location marked on the map.”
“Thank goodness,” she sighed. Varric pulled himself up from the sand.
“This is probably the first time I’m happy to be heading underground.”
The ground dipped up ahead, and she spotted the sloping hole framed by two paint-marked boulders. Adaar walked with renewed purpose, only a little guilty to be leaving the party behind with her longer strides. It was a tight fit as she scrabbled back downwards, head ducked to avoid knocking her horns into the cieling, but the cool air and the shade were a blessed welcome. She took a seat at the bottom of the slope, unslinging her pack and unwinding the rope-sleeves of her robes.
“Better?” Bull asked when he and the others arrived a minute later to find her starfished on the floor.
“I will never complain about the rain again.”
He glanced off into the darkness over her shoulder. She hadn’t even bothered to light a torch.
“I hope you feel the same way about giant spiders.”
“What?”

Have you ever been to the Badlands/ Blackhills in South Dakota? If so any advice. I'm going soon and I have no clue what to expect from that sort of region. I'm from a small valley in the south. The creatures in the corn and woods I know how to handle. But this is uncharted territory. I've also never been higher than 1000 feet above sea level.
I have!  I really love Custer State Park, one of the best places to camp in the US 10/10! You’re going to have a great time, but the things you should be aware of:
You may expirience altitude sickness for a day or two, especially if you’re flying in, but if you drive it will be less pronounced, if you feel it at all.  Take it really easy the first day you arrive, your lungs aren’t used to having to compensate for poor air pressure.  Symptoms of Altitiude Sickness include: Dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, falling asleep ‘at random’, muscle and joint pain, tintinitus and elevated heart rate. You can take an anti-inflammatory like asprin or Ibuprofen to help with any discomfort. If you start to feel like “oh god I think Im actually dying” or still feel like hot garbage on day 4, you should seek medical attention.
Dehydration is real and dangerous.  It’s dryer so you won’t notice how much you’re sweating becuase it evaporates, and you’ll be losing more water from respiratin too. Keep your water bottle in your hand.  That weird habit we have of eating/drinking because we’re bored? absolutely works in your favor here. In the car? Sip. Listening to a ranger talk? Sip. Pausing to breathe on a hike? Sip, sip motherfucker.
Also make sure to eat more salty foods to keep your electrolytes up too.  if gatorade doesn’t sound totally disgusting, you need gatorade. if your ears, cheeks or neck start feeling hot you may be on the verge of a dehydration episode.  Sit down in the shade and have some water and a snack. If you feel like someone is trying to remove your eye with a melon baller that’s a dehydration/electrolyte migraine.
One thing about being closer to space is that the UV is a LOT stronger up here and I cannot stress the importance of sunscreen enough. I go minimum 50 SPF and reapply every 2-3 hours.  Apply everywhere you don’t want skin cancer, which is everywhere. Take a shower every night because leaving it on your skin is no bueno also hiking and gatorade make pit stank INTENSE.
If you think you hear thunder, take cover.  If you can hear the thunderstorm, you’re close enough to be killed by it.  Get in a car or building ASAP.  Im not kidding run down the mountain.  Try to avoid standing under or near trees as they are literally nature’s lightning rods.
STAY. ON. THE. TRAIL. if you stay on the trail, keep an ear out for lightning or wildlife, and an eye on your internal organs the odds of something disastrous happening to you are practically zero.
Wildlife is WAAAAAAY down on the scale of potentially dangerous things in the Black Hills Area, provided you aren’t a dumbass about it, so:
-All Animals Always have the right of way.  Its in the road? Stop and wait for it. In a picnic area? have your picnic somewhere else. coming down the trail? get off the trail and let it pass.  bison in particular are aware of this ettiquite and expect you to back the fuck off if they come into your area.
-Any animal that approaches you is diseased, got offspring nearby, or used to bullying humans for food and is dangerous.  Back up, leave and ABSOLUTLEY DO NOT FEED OR PET
-Bugs: Brown Recluse and Black widow do live in SD but are rare and most people don’t have serious reactions to bites. Ticks and Mosquities both carry disease so wear clothing that covers as much of your body as is safe (heatstroke worse than tick bite), read and follow the instructions on bug repellant, and have a friend check your body/clothing for ticks before you go from one place to another.
-Reptiles: the only dangerous snake here is the Rattlesnake.  It almost never goes near people, so if you stay on the trail you are extremely unlikely to meet one. be careful to not put your hands or feet into places you can’t clearly see, like rock crevices or behind logs or into tall grass. A rattlesnake sounds less like a maraca and more like a Vibrator on High.  If you put your foot down and hear a VERY loud BUZZZZZ!!!! that’s a rattler. Step backwards and go back exactly the way you came.
-Birds: Jays,Magpies, Crows and Ravens all will beg for your food and will learn to harass people for food if you give it to them.  Don’t give the bird food and pack your trash out so they don’t accidentally choke on a candy wrapper.  Turkey and Geese can be territorial so give them about 20ft personal space, esp if they have babies.
-Small herbivores like: Squirrels, marmot, rabbit etc.: All animals bite and lots of them carry very nasty diseases. Do not feed, do not pet.  The West is in the middle of a pretty nasty Rabies outbreak so if you see a skunk or raccoon Vacate the Area immediately.
-Large Herbivores like Elk, Deer, Bison, American Feral Horse/Mustang, bighorn, mountain goat: All of these can gore and trample your ass to death if you violate thier personal space.  They run faster than your car can drive on these roads and turn better too.  Try to keep about 300ft between you and them (about a football field) if possible.  You will almost certainly come closer- they roam the area and come int human-habitated areas frequently.  Stay still if they’re just passing through, and leave if they start to approach you. If you’re in your car, just stay in your car.
-Small Carnivores like Fox, coyote, bobcat: If you see one, you’re pretty lucky!  They’re generally chill, but should also be given about 300ft of personal space. Watch quietly.
-Large Carnivores: Black bear, Grizzly bear, Cougar, Wolf:  Your odds of seeing these are only *slightly* better than those of seeing a Unicorn. That said: make noise while hiking like talking, singing or wearing bear-bells so you don’t startle them, which is when most dangerous interactions happen. Read the instructions on your bear Spray and carry it with you. Do not allow members of the group to hike alone, lag behind or run ahead, especially small children. If you’re hiking and suddenly smell a VERY INTENSE aroma of Cat Pee (like, a litter-box used by serveral cats overdue for a change strong) A cougar was in the area in the last few hours and may still be nearby. Leave immediately.
In the event you do see a large carnivore at distance, it’s personal space is more like 1,000ft or three football fields. If you come closer either wait for it to pass or back up and leave the way you came, remaining facing the animal.
Cultural things to be aware of:
-There is a large population of indigenous people in the black hills area, mostly people from the Lakota and Dakota tribes but many tribes consider the area an ancestral home and sacred area. Do not carve your name into or otherwise deface the nature.  Don’t be rude or do weird streotype things and tell your friends and family off if they start ot act up for some reason.  If there is a publicly open pow-wow (usually advertised as such on flyers around town) you should definitely attend and learn some new things, and buy indigenous art from indigenous people.*
-on a related note: Mt. Rushmore is very much considered a defacement of a Sacred place by the indigenous people of the area and it’s possible that if you go this summer that there may be protestors there.  They’re Right, they Should Say So, and if they offer you literature you should take some and read it. *
* this is my understanding from talking to people in the area circa 2012 which was the last time I was out there, things may have changed since.
-Black hills is also, unfortunately, Tr*mp country full of guys that have totally bought into the ‘organized Antifa’ myth and think it’s OK to stand around in public places with AR-15′s and whatnot.  They may also be there.  I hate to tell people to not be themselves but be cautious with how Visually Queer you are becuase these people are NUTS.  Avoid them if at all possible, like you would skunks and other possibly rabid animals.
-Definitely have the huckleberry Pie.  i don’t even like fruit pies and I love huckleberry pie. and the shakes, and jam, and pancake syrup.
-some of the towns have painted fiberglass bisons in them as part of a commuinity art project.  Definitely take seflies with them.
-Remember to DOWNSHIFT gears when heading down the mountains becuase you can and will wear out your brakes riding them. If you need to go slower than most local traffic (you probably will) use the slow vehicle pullouts anytime there’s someone behind you.
-there is no such thing as a stupid question and flatlanders asking bonkers shit is a major moutain states amusement. If you’re not sure, ask.
So, yeah- Keep track of how you’re feeling, mind everyone’s personal space and be respectuful and you will have a lovely time in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Chapter 28 - Immortal
In some remote mountainous areas in the south, Miao women used clay pots and menstrual blood to raise hundreds of insects. They sealed them, placed them in a damp place and cast curses on them. Once the day was done, the poisonous insects will have killed each other and the last one was embodied with Gu poison*. The curse made with Gu poison could make someone's love interest fall helplessly in love with them for the rest of his life, and it could also plague one's enemy with nightmares, madness, and even death. The women who concocted Gu poison were typically loners, often muttering to no one, avoided by the general public.
*(T/N: 蛊 - Gu poison was believed to be the combination of all the venoms from the insects that died and would be used for black magic in southern regions of China)
In Nanyang Black Magic, they would use the body of a baby that died recently, boiled out the toyol*, poured it on a puppet doused in human blood and placed it in the home. The imprisoned baby ghost would protect the house but the curse-caster will be punished. They would also carve birthdates into wood, causing the other to die.
*(T/N: 尸油 - literally 'corpse oil.' I'll spare you the graphic details but basically taking a dead body's chin and boiling it until oil drains out of it)
This black magic flourished in the Ming Dynasty. The Eastern Depot eunuchs* were in turmoil. Everyone was reporting each other, no one would speak to each other, eyes darting between each other daily. These curses were developed as a branch of Daoism to oppose political rivals. A-Yan said that the Daoist practices used to drive out ghosts and save people were declining, but this black magic has stuck around. It was one of the biggest spots in Daoist history.
*(T/N: 东厂 - a secret police & spy agency run by eunuchs meant to suppress political opposition towards the emperor)
Saturday morning was a beautiful day. The sun was shining but not to the point of being unbearably hot. The distant mountains stood silently under the blue sky. A black Audi passed quickly through the country’s tree-lined roads, raising a cloud of grit and dust. A white goose with its head held high on the roadside was startled by the car, flapping its wings and stretching its neck to hide behind a fence.
The car stopped at a small farmhouse in the northwest corner of the village.
In the courtyard, a tall Shuzi tree stretched out dense branches, looking extraordinarily vibrant. In contrast, the entire courtyard was strangely decrepit. A well was covered by a millstone and the stone-paced path was full of weeds. The doors of the three mud-brick houses were closed, with straw curtains covering the doors and windows covered with dust.
Everything was very different from a month ago. Lin Yan remembered that the last time he came here, there were hens and rabbits. The old lady in blue embroidered clothing was kneeling on the futon with her eyes closed. The small courtyard was filled with the mysterious atmosphere of the countryside. The current yard would give people the impression that the homeowner hadn't been home for years when, in fact, a fresh grave in the back of the mountain had only been built a month ago. Rural people were convinced that the houses inhabited by the living were blessed by the gods and sheltered from the elements for decades. Once the owner of the house dies, the gods will follow, so the empty house often collapsed and was destroyed in less than six months.
"When Second Immortal Gu was in the village, she would help children that fell sick with fever, and the adults that were dealing with evil spirits. Young men would ask her when they'd get married and, for the right price, she'd tell them." The village chief said with a cigarette in his mouth.
The village leader knew Yin Zhou’s mother well. He heard that Yin Zhou wanted to bring someone to pay tribute to Second Immortal Gu and waited at the entrance of the village to welcome them. It took ten minutes to drive from the village leader's house to Second Immortal Gu’s house. The village head smoked four cigarettes in a row. Yin Zhou squeezed his eyes shut while Lin Yan and the little Daoist priest twisted their heads out of the window every 30 seconds to gasp for a breath of fresh air. The village chief was the only one of them chatting in the smoky car. Lin Yan saw how the complaints of three people and a ghost just flew over his head.
If a ghost could complain.
Lin Yan found a roll of incense from the little Daoist's bag and lit it. He put the incense burner at the door of the mud-brick house and offered his respects.
"Last time, we left just before Second Immortal Gu had her accident. I should have come to offer some incense sooner, it's just things with school got busy and I haven't been able to make it until now." Lin Yan brushed the straw curtain and the accumulated dust fell on his face. "Cough, cough. Does - Does anyone take care of this place?"
"Of course not. You big city kids wouldn't know. Doing this line of work is only good for putting food on the table. Immortal Gu came out here in her twenties. In less than ten years, her husband and two sons had died and she was the only one left. She couldn't even save herself." The village leader stuffed his yellow striped shirt into his pants. "Don't feel bad. No immortal in this village could escape that fate."
"Come on, let's go, you guys are here to see her grave. We don't put up any gravestones here. We just build a stone platform, but the villagers will remember who it's for. I'll take you up there."
The sun was growing hotter. Several of them used broken branches to smack the grass in case of snakes while they hiked up the rugged mountain trail. A rural cemetery wasn't as neat as an urban cemetery. Each family claimed a spot, with every newly deceased buried next to the rest of their family. The grave was a prominent mound of dirt with a large stone on top. Some of the graves were too old to even make out the mound, the ground studded with small light blue flowers. A date palm tree grew wildly, and they needed to watch their step when walking so they wouldn't disturb the resting dead.
Second Immortal Gu's grave was off on its own. The mound was freshly dug. Other than a crooked wreath lying on it, it was indistinguishable from the older graves that had been abandoned for years.
The scene made Lin Yan feel incredibly guilty. He burned a large stack of paper dollars in front of the grave, playing with his branch while saying silently in his mind: Auntie, if you're still here, please come back and tell us who harmed you. We'll avenge your death.
The village chief took the cigarettes Lin Yan had bought him and squatted off in the distance to smoke. Lin Yan winked at the little Daoist priest and said softly, "Let's start?"
A-Yan nodded and took out a crumpled photo from his pocket that he had found in a frame in Immortal Gu's house. The immortal in the photo was still very young, wearing a floral cotton jacket and staring vacantly ahead.
"Now isn't a good time. The s-sun is too high. The mountains are filled with Yang energy, and the ghosts may not be able to be reached." A-Yan said. He jumped up and grabbed a twig from the date tree above his head. He hung a spirit summoning flag on it and patted the dust off his shoulders. "Here's a picture, here are the bones. Um, Lin Yan, I'm going to borrow your birthdate for this."
Before Lin Yan had time to ask, the little Daoist priest handed him a dagger. Unlike his usual mahogany sword, this one was actually made of metal. The handle seemed to be a few years old, and the tip of the blade gleaming a bright white in the sunlight.
"H-Hold this for a minute. You might feel a little uncomfortable, but don't let it go." A-Yan instructed: "I-I'll read one sentence and you read the next."
Yin Zhou chuckled but he felt that it probably wasn't the time to laugh so he quickly turned his laughter into a string of coughs.
Surprisingly, A-Yan never stuttered whenever he talked about Taoism and charms, Lin Yan muttered.
Time passed by and it was almost noon. The date trees in the mountains couldn't block the hot sun. After standing there for a long time, most of them were covered in a layer of sweat. The village leader couldn't bear the heat and left to join some nearby people to drink some tea. Lin Yan stood in front of the grave with the dagger in his hand. He rubbed the sweat on his cheeks off with his shoulder, hoping that this time it would be over quickly.
The little Daoist started reciting. His voice didn't sound like proper speech, but the slow rate of speech wasn't too difficult to follow. Lin Yan held the hilt of the dagger and along with the chant. Not even halfway through the incantation, Lin Yan already began to feel that something was wrong. The temperature around him began to drop, and the hot sweat condensed on his back. He kept shivering like he was suffering from heatstroke. A chill came from the handle of the dagger. First, the temperature seeped into his palm, and then his whole arm, up to his shoulders, through the bones in his spine to the back of his head in a numb wave. It was as if he wasn't holding a dagger but a frozen fish that had been left in the bottom tray of the freezer for a year.
The spirit summoning flag above his head began to move.
"It's cold." Lin Yan took a breath and scanned the silent mountains around him. "Have you reached the soul?"
"I t-think I found her." The little Daoist hesitated. "Huh. . . that's weird. . ."
After reciting two more incantations, the bone-chilling cold air had spread to his calves. Lin Yan's teeth chattered and he shivered out: "A-. . . A-Yan, are you sure this is okay. . . it's too. . . cold. . ."
The chanting continued, the little Daoist priest shot him a sideways glance, his eyes cold. Lin Yan can only brace himself to keep follow the mantra incantations, a heavy cold sweat forming on his forehead.
"Hold on for a little longer. The soul is bound to something, I want to break it free." A-Yan gritted his teeth, and a piece of talisman paper was slapped against the blade. All of a sudden, the cold washed over him like a tsunami. Lin Yan's whole body felt like it was being stabbed by needles, veins popping on his forehead from the pain.
"A-Yan, what are you doing?!" Yin Zhou knew something wasn't right when he saw Lin Yan's lips turn blue. "If you can't do it now, someone's going to get hurt. Lin Yan, use the ghost that's following you!"
"Almost there. Don't let go!" The little Daoist was flushed a sickly pale colour and he rapidly chanted the mantra. The spirit summoning flag above his head was being whipped by the wind. There was a ripping sound and the whole piece of cloth was torn in half and fluttered down onto the old grave in the distance.
"I-It's okay. . . A-Yan, go faster. . ." Lin Yan was so cold that he could barely get his tongue to work. He tried to move the hand with the dagger to it but he found that his skin was stuck to the metal and he couldn't budge it. He was shivering from his arms all the way down to his legs. Lin Yan staggered back and stepped on the bag they'd brought, almost falling backwards.
A force of strength supported his back. Xiao Yu's voice sounded right when he needed him, but his low voice didn't let him retort: "Let go."
Xiao Yu's hand covered the back of Lin Yan's hand. Compared to the temperature of the dagger, his palm was actually warm. It was just right to block the cold air that kept pouring into Lin Yan's arm. A-Yan's expression changed in an instant and he shouted loudly: "Back off, beast!"
"I'll fucking finish this. . ." Lin Yan abruptly closed his eyes and pressed his palm to the blade. All at once, the bone-chilling cold air felt like ten thousand needles running through his palm up to his arm. At the same time, there was a cold that grew behind him. He quickly opened his eyes but Second Immortal Gu hadn't appeared. On the contrary, Xiao Yu snapped Lin Yan's wrist with completely overwhelming strength, forcing the sharp weapon out of his hand.
The moment the dagger was taken out of Lin Yan's hand, he felt like he was immediately torn out of an ice block and thrown into a fire. The ritual was broken, the hot sunlight licked his back, making his whole body numbly feel like it was going to dissolve. However, he couldn't care less about his body's reaction. What happened next made Lin Yan and Yin Zhou - who was freaking out off to the side - shocked. They saw Xiao Yu holding the dagger inching towards A-Yan, frigid eyes filled with killing intent. When the palm of his hand touched the hilt of the knife, it sounded like searing flesh. But he didn't care. He grabbed A-Yan's collar with one hand, and violently plunged the dagger toward his left eye with the other!
Lin Yan's mind kicked into action. He subconsciously rushed over to hold Xiao Yu's waist, using all his strength to drag him back. However, something was wrong with the little Daoist priest, too. His usual cowardice was gone and his eyes burned with rage. He rolled away and broke free, rapidly taking out a handful of cinnabar and tossing it towards Xiao Yu. His voice changed because of the trembling: "An evil beast is an evil beast. You can't stay!"
"What the fuck is going on!" Yin Zhou couldn't see Xiao Yu. He could only see the little Daoist tumbling on the ground alone trying to avoid a shimmering dagger. Lin Yan's nerves were fried. While dragging Xiao Yu back, he roared towards Yin Zhou: "How the hell should I know? You grab A-Yan!"
He had never seen Xiao Yu so angry. The midday sun was burning and blinding. The ghost's whole body was emitting a faint greenish-black aura. The knuckles of both hands snapped open, sharp claw-like nails grabbing the back of the Daoist priest's head. Lin Yan thought he was seeing things and closed his eyes, but the scene stayed the same. The place where the ghost stood glowed a greenish-black and the place where the human stood was a dancing orange fire, intertwining with each other, but the orangish-yellow flames were gradually dying out. . .
Later, he would learn that people have yang energy and ghosts have yin energy. When the energy was extremely concentrated, he could directly perceive the yin and yang without his eyes confusing it in his mind. This was the foundation of excellent Taoism. He had inadvertently opened a long-closed door to the mystical arts.
However, the current situation was extremely dangerous. Xiao Yu held A-Yan’s neck with one hand and the dagger cut inch by inch into the little Daoist priest's arm blocking it. The hand holding the knife was searing black from the contact with the blade of the evil spirit's. A Yan's face grew purple, his eyes bulging. Lin Yan didn't dare to hesitate for a moment and scrambled over to protect A-Yan from behind. There was a clanging sound and the dagger rolled to the ground.
The little Daoist broke free from the evil spirit's hands, clutching his bleeding wound and groaning intermittently: "Lin Yan. . . Immortal Gu. . . Immortal Gu's spirit is trapped. . . I couldn't get her. . ."
Lin Yan supported the little Daoist's shoulders. His eyes gleamed, and the soft deer-like eyes were different from those when he had when he cast the spell. "The curse. . . Be careful." A-Yan whispered. Lin Yan hadn't gotten the chance to ask what was going on before his thin body couldn't support his own weight. His eyes rolled back and he fainted.
Lin Yan and Yin Zhou looked at each other, shocked by the outcome, unable to utter a word.

I think one of the things that bothers me most about the language I see surrounding this pandemic is misuse of the word ‘safe.’  Just because measures are taken to increase safety doesn’t mean that the action is ‘safe.’ Holding a gathering outdoors with limited numbers rather than indoors is safer than other types of gatherings, but it doesn’t mean the risk of getting the virus is zero. A former Alabama state senator who contracted the virus at an outdoor gathering recently passed away. Requiring masks at the grocery store and encouraging social distancing is safer than the alternative, but you can still get the virus at a grocery store. My fiance got sick earlier this year with suspected COVID-19, and the only place he’d been in two weeks was the grocery store.
Now that we’re moving into the holiday season, I’ve seen a lot of commercials lately touting that certain restaurants, airlines, stores, etc. are a ‘safe’ place to go with the family. I recently saw an ad touting an indoor play area (aimed toward kids who are generally too young to wear masks) as ‘safe’ because of their frequent sanitizing. Even before the pandemic, a lot of parents think of those places as germ cesspools! A lot of people seem to think that if somewhere is open and if they tout safety measures, if they follow all the rules, wear masks, distance, wash their hands, then they can’t get sick. Unfortunately, the virus doesn’t discriminate between people being reckless and people following all the rules. We all have to take risks from time to time. But I think a lot of people who have slightly stretched the safety guidelines after continuing to not get sick for many months really feel like they’re not at risk because they still haven’t gotten sick yet-- after all, they were being ‘safe.’
I think of this in terms of hiking. I visited a National Park for a hiking trip several months ago. I was taking as many precautions to avoid the virus as possible (going on an off-peak time, choosing a less popular trail, wearing a mask, etc), but I knew there were still risks. But the virus isn’t the only potential danger I could have encountered at the park. The park really wants you to be safe. They have informative signs and instructions for best practices, tell you what you should pack on the websites, even give information about what to do if you meet a bear. They maintain and mark the trails well. But even the most experienced hikers can meet with disaster, because nature can’t be completely controlled. The park I visited has made the headlines for wild animal attacks, hikers slipping and falling from waterfalls and cliffs, a couple murdered when I was a kid, a fatal small plane crash, missing hikers, remains of lost hikers recovered, and more. Heart attacks, heatstroke, fainting, hypothermia, and concussions can happen to hikers in the middle of a secluded trail, with no cell service.
Hiking through the beautiful, peaceful park, I was aware that I was being cautious, careful, and responsible. I knew that the park rangers were doing their best to protect me. But they never claimed the park was safe.

TIPS FOR A DOG-FRIENDLY LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Tumblr media
The first Monday in September brings us Labor Day, the final days of summer, and the start of the back-to-school season for many of us.
In many ways, Labor Day can feel like “the last hoorah!”
Labor Day weekend is a busy time for veterinary hospitals. With all the fun you’ll be having it’s important to remember the dangers that come with extreme heat and overly-stimulating holiday festivities this time of the year.
Pet Safety for Labor Day Parties
Are you hosting or attending a party on Labor Day? If so, there are many potential dangers at a party that can bring harm to your pet. Be sure to keep these tips in mind to avoid endangering your pet.
1. Exercise
Whether it be a long walk or extra playtime with their favorite toys during the day, your pets are more likely to be tired, peaceful, and calmer at night. While outside, make sure you take your dog to the restroom several times before the party starts, as well. You wouldn’t want to be forced to stop the festivities for an unexpected potty break!
2. Update Tag and Microchip(s)
If your pet manages to break loose and become lost,  it will be that much harder to get them back without proper identification. Make sure their tag is fully visible at all times. Fifteen percent of pet owners lost a pet in the last five years, a heartbreaking and often avoidable statistic. A microchip can mean the difference between a joyous reunion and a post-labor day search party
3. Monitor the Grill
Keep dogs away from hot grills, tempting trash, and flammable items.
Labor Day brings about interesting smells and new foods that can tempt even the most well-behaved dogs. When it comes to human foods, pet parents should avoid feeding their pets from the table. However, never feed pets at the grill. In addition to stomach and digestive problems caused by greasy and carb-heavy human foods, your dog could potentially burn themselves on hot grill plates or burning coals.
4. Keep them Cool
Although the end of summer is near, the sun is shining bright and is still hot, hot, hot! Dogs like being outside, but intense heat can cause heatstroke and exhaustion. If you and your dog go outside for an adventure, or there is a party being hosted outdoors; be sure your fur baby has access to plenty of cool drinking water. Placing a cold, damp cloth on your pet’s stomach may also help them beat the heat.
5. Beware of Fireworks
Excitable dogs may try to attack, eat, or play with fireworks and firecrackers that may appear on Labor Day. Unfortunately, dogs and fireworks don’t mix well. Fireworks can cause deadly injuries like severe burns, trauma, and even chemical poisoning.
Used fireworks should be watered down and stored away from the house or any flammable materials after the festivities end. This will allow them to cool down properly, preventing fires or unforeseen injuries to your dog(s).
6. Watch for Flammable Items
Keep all flammable items away from pets. This includes everything from glow sticks and fireworks to matches and lighter fluid. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could cause difficulty breathing or even kidney disease in severe cases. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin and can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression if ingested.
7. Ask For Help
Ask for help! Your party guests can help keep track of your pet throughout the night. Ask a few trusted friends to take turns watching your fur baby. This way, everyone is bound to have fun, and your dog gets to socialize. We’ll volunteer if you can’t convince your friends.
6 Fun Ways to Celebrate Labor Day with Your Dog
No plans for the long weekend?
If you have any fur babies at home, another way to celebrate the day off is by planning an activity with your best friend. We’re here to help make the most of your Labor Day weekend with spent with you, yourself, and your mutt.
1. Beach Day
Most dogs love to swim, and there’s no better place to do it then at a beach, lake, or shore. Playing frisbee, boating, and swimming are just a few ways to enjoy the beach (or any body of water!) with your dog.
2. Camping
Most dogs love camping and will be quick to adapt to #tentlife. Camping is more fun with a dog. They have so much to do, see and smell! Try spending a long weekend with your dog and your family amid the beauty of Mother Nature.
3. Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails
Hiking can open up a whole new world of fascinating adventure. Dogs make great companions in the wilderness.
Treat yourself and your pup by discovering a new hiking trail!
Hiking can be a fun, but strenuous activity for both you and your pet. As a responsible, adventurous pet parent, it’s important to be prepared on a hike with your dog.
4. Visit a Dog-Friendly Bar or Resort
Imagine…Your dog’s very own luxurious bed, fancy food and water bowls, room service menu, dog treats, in-room massages, and maybe even a “Yappy Hour” or two (alcoholic beverages for pet parents, only!)  at a dog-friendly resort? If a resort doesn’t seem feasible this year, you can also try out a local dog-friendly bar.
5. Visit the Dog Park
When’s the last time you took your dog to a dog park?
Most pups love off-leash time with canine friends.
To find the right dog park for you and Fido, check with friends, neighbors, and online to see where the dog parks are in your area. Do your due diligence and check out the dog park before you let your dog run loose inside.
6. Just Relax
Sometimes the best way to celebrate a holiday is to do nothing at all. Ah, a long lazy weekend with no schedules, no alarm clocks, no work, no projects, no errands, no ringing phones, no buzzing email alerts, no pressing errands. So why not just relax, recharge your battery, and don’t forget to reach over and pet your faithful companion during commercial break.

BTHB: Heatstroke
Tumblr media
--------------------------------------------
BTHB: Heatstroke
Hawaii Five-0
 ---------------------------------------------
Ever since Steve had left the island on his soul searching trip six months ago, Danny Williams had done quite well of avoiding danger and unnecessary stupidity.
He had learned to cope with the absence of his partner in crime- adapting to the pitiful looks from friends and families, snide comments from the daily crime abiding idiot and the excessive, “Are you okay?” heard daily. He’d learn to deal with the contact from his partner going from texts to an occasional phone call here and there. Danny Williams had even begun to slowly acclimate to driving his own vehicle, not paying for a certain animal’s inability to bring money for coffee and not continuing to have a frequent flier pass to Queen’s Medical Center’s emergency room.
And then he received the call.
Now, Danny Williams lays sprawled seven feet below one of Oahu’s hiking paths in a ditch in a direct path of the freaking sun. He’s drifting in and out of consciousness with what’s likely to be two broken ribs and pure and absolute misery.
Oh, and he’s hallucinating Steve.
As what looks like Steve McGarrett stands above him, peering down with worry, Danny has no doubt- well, very little doubt- that he’s staring at a hallucination. Even with that phone call-
“Stay with me, buddy.”
“You …not…real,” Danny slurs. He tries his absolute best to roll onto his side, but pain explodes in his head with a heavy round of nausea. “I…can’t…”
The eerily accurate hallucination kneels next to Danny, backpack in hand, scans the injured detective before turning his attention to the contents of his backpack. Danny can only bring an arm to shade his eyes from the beating sun and half-mumble, “G’way.”
“Not until I check you out, Danno,” Hallucination Steve replies. Completely ignoring Danny’s words as the real one would, Steve rests the back of a hand against Danny’s forehead and attempts to push Danny’s arm away from his eyes. Danny flails a hand in the direction of the hallucination but completely misses and hears something resembling a sigh.
“Took me over an hour to find you,” the increasingly irritating hallucination continues.  “You’re showing signs of heatstroke, man, especially after being out here by yourself for so long. What the hell are you doing out here? When Tani had told me that you had gone hiking of all things-“
Danny furrows his brow in concentration in formulating his next words to be something resembling English. “F-n…wen’fo. Fell….Phone..M’d.”
The sure- to- be hallucination’s gaze flickers to an object out of Danny’s view. “Let me move you out of the sun.”
Danny’s vision blurs as what feels like a pair of hands reach underneath his armpits and drag him backwards across the dirt. He’s soon lowered onto a small incline under a large tree branch. A water bottle is brought to his lips and Danny tastes what has to be the best damn water he’s ever come across. When the water bottle is suddenly moved away from his lips, Danny’s brain begins to misfire.
He felt himself being dragged and fake hallucinated water can’t be that tasty.
“Hey! Eyes open! Danno, keep those eyes open!”
Danny’s eyes flutter open and close as he slurs, “Why…d’nno…you n’here. Mn’t…you….not…here.”
The hallucination of Steve turns his back on Danny to return the water bottle to his backpack. “Why- Danno, why do you keep saying that?”
Danny squeezes his eyes shut and tries to lick his chapped lips. He reopens his eyes and focuses on the hallucination, finding a scruffy, sweaty geared up Steve McGarrett, eyes filled with determination, worry and guilt. “C’se…left..didn’t..c’m ..w’nt..come.”
“But Danny, I ca- hey, hey! Danny, I need you to stay awake!”
Danny, completely unaware his eyes had closed, turns his head away from Steve. He can feel his arms and neck begin to burn. He’s tired and has no more energy in him to talk. “L’me sleep.”
“Don’t fall asleep on me, man. I’m here,” Danny hears, “I’m here.”
No, you aren’t, Danny thinks as he feels oblivion blanketing him. You left me.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Tani Rey leans against the door frame of one of the small hospital’s hospital room. She’s tired, knee deep in a twenty-two-hour shift, and worried at Danny’s unconscious state in the hospital bed and the figure standing at the foot of the bed. She runs a hand over her face before approaching the foot of the bed with a coffee in hand.
“The doctor says that he wouldn’t have lasted much longer if you hadn’t COMPLETELY disregarded the Governor’s warning to stay out of it,” Tani begins. She holds out the hospital coffee cup. “ Here- you need it.”
Steve McGarrett doesn’t react to the offer and continues to stare at his unconscious partner in the bed. He can’t bring himself to break the gaze on the patches of heat rash on Danny’s neck and arms, the ice packs on his forehead and chest and the IV needle sticking out of his arm. “He didn’t think I was real. Even after-“
“You call and say, ‘I’m back in town’ out of the blue after little contact for months?” Tani finishes. “After you called, Danny got upset and I suggested he go for a hike. It’s something I’ve pushed him into to cope, you know? Take the coffee.”
Steve shakes his head and eyes Tani tiredly. “He kept saying that I left him.”
“Technically, you did.”
“Not helping, Tani.”
Tani rests against the bed railing and nods in agreement. “You’re right. It doesn’t help how you feel right now…but he’s gone through a lot in the past six months with you leaving. I have to ask- are you staying or passing through?”
Steve shakes his head before dropping it. “He was supposed to be safe. All of you were supposed to be safe without me there. I step foot on the island and Danny almost dies of heatstroke.”
Tani rolls her eyes. “That’s ridiculous. As much as you are danger magnet, we all get plenty hurt without you. Danny went out on a trail and fell seven feet off the trail and you out of all the park rangers and the team are the one to find him. He’s alive because of you- don’t forget that.”
Steve looks up to her and gives a tired smile. “I’m sorry I left, “he says.
“You needed to go; I get it. Maybe not the best timing but I get it. You sticking around? “
The ex-SEAL’s breath hitches at a quick glance at Danny. “Do you think he’ll forgive me?”
“I think even though he was hurt you left, he still likes you…for some reason,” Tani jokes. With Steve’s focus on her, she does not acknowledge the detective beginning to stir. “But the best thing you can do is ask him yourself.”
“Wha- “Steve watches Tani tip her coffee cup towards the bed, turn, and walk towards the doorway. He blinks before looking back to the bed and unexpectedly finding Danny sleepily staring back at him. The detective blinks a few times and then mouths, “Water.”
“Of course,” Steve stammers. He moves around the edge of the bed to press the call button. Danny tracks him with his eyes with a hint of suspicion. “They’ll bring some in. How are you feeling?”
“Fine.”
“I’ll take this as a yes,” Steve chuckles. “I’m real, by the why. I get why you think that I guess with me leaving and everything. I’m sorry, man, but I’m glad you’re ok.”
Danny tilts his head towards Steve and with furrowed brow of concentration, croaks, “Fault.”
Steve flinches at the comment and painfully nods in understanding. “I know me showing up out of the blue- “
“No.” Danny shakes his head and with closed his eyes, whispers, “Heat…..fault.”
Steve stares for a moment before a warm familiar feeling comes. “Are you seriously blaming me for the heat on an island paradise where people pay thousands of dollars to come visit?”
Danny nods and snorts in amusement. Steve gives his hand and comforting squeeze and feels the comforting feeling that although there’s a hell of a lot of work to be done, there’s hope.

Heatstroke
Pairing: Leonard McCoy x Reader
Words: 500
Warnings: None
For my girl @outside-the-government who requested a Len x Reader for heatroke after her hike!
Thank you once again to my amazing beta @muchamusedaboutnothing
-
You make your way into the apartment you and Leonard are staying in. The two of you had spent the majority of the morning hiking a trail you had picked the night before. You left early in the morning to avoid the scorching sun and midday heat. You had underestimated the length of the trail, deciding to cut the end of the hike short when it became too hot.
Leonard grabs cool bottles of water from the refrigerator.
“You okay darlin?” the doctor asks as he watches you lying on the couch, your arm raised, covering your eyes.
“Mmm” you whine. “Headache.”
Leonard winces in sympathy, handing you the cool drink and motioning you to sit up so you could rest your head on his lap, a position you often find yourself in when you have a headache to make it easy for him to massage your head and neck.
You sit up, ignoring the dizziness, and down half the bottle of water in one go before leaning back against Leonard’s lap. “Think you may have overdone it on that hike?”
You make something like a grunt in reply, hating how he is probably right.
Leonard begins to gently rub at your temples, attempting to relieve the pressure and pain building up.
“Jesus, darlin’ you’re burning up.”
You’re too tired to register what he’s saying, not hearing the worried tone in his voice.
He moves his hand away, placing his fingers over the pulse point in your neck. “Your pulse is racing, too. Are you feeling okay?”
“Mm, dizzy and my head hurts.”
The doctor nods, having an idea of what the problem could be. “I think you might’ve got heatstroke.” He gently moves from underneath you, “I’ll be right back. We’ll have you feeling better in no time.”
You hear Leonard moving around in the kitchen but decide to keep your eyes closed, trying to focus on not throwing up, nausea combining with the awful headache. When he returns he slides a hand under your legs, elevating them slightly on a pillow. He moves back to your head setting a bowl of cool water down and ringing out a flannel, gently wiping your brow to cool you.
Over the next half hour he encourages you to drink more water and continues sponging you down, cooling your skin. You drift off not long after, the hike and heat exhaustion wearing you out.
When you wake up, you’re still on the sofa, but Len is nowhere to be seen. You get up slowly, and are glad to find the dizziness and nausea from earlier are gone.
You find him sitting on the balcony, and make your way outside. You’re tired and want to head to bed, but the thought of laying in a stuffy bed with a thick duvet and a warm body next to you puts you off. You lay your head on Leonard’s shoulder and snuggle up to him, choosing to stay in the cool night air for a while longer.
