okay so ive seen some people talking about lyra’s character and how she “isn’t normal” and is smarter than a “normal” girl but… that’s the whole point ☠️

for all the chapters lyra talks about how she has literally been pretending to be normal for the past 3. YEARS. she talks about how she was a “happy, normal teen” until the hawthorne name becomes popular in the news. her life goes off the rails, and her sleeping through lectures, taking a test based on how the questions were worded, and her quitting dance is a result of this.

and the test. i know it seems weird that she was able to “figure out the code” and take the test that way, but she gives a explanation why. her being able to not see pictures and instead read words and numbers is what makes it so easy for her to find answer from a multiple choice test without knowing the material. because the truth is, lyra hasn’t been normal since avery became inherited. her breaking away from everything she loves, her family, her friends, dance, and not being able to sleep at night because of the nightmares, isn’t just for fun. lyra’s brain works in this way as a trauma response to suddenly being able to remember her fathers death clear as day. plus, cmon, IT WAS A 10 QUESTION TEST!! you guys are acting like she’s avery, acing a teachers impossible test. some multiple test questions are worded in a way that almost pushes you towards the answer.

also… she literally cannot be normal. how do you expect her to be a contestant in the game if her brain doesn’t work this way?? im sorry, but she wouldn’t last. there are millions of people who attempt to be a contestant, and only 7 get picked. lyra has to be at least a bit smart to survive against other experienced contestants, like rohan for example.

lyra isn’t normal anymore. she outright says this, and knows that her running off to an out of state college, neglecting the one thing she loves most, (dance) and leaving her family while also barely calling isn’t because she was normal. it was because she couldn’t stand to be around the people she loved anymore. because that’s what happens when you’re suddenly reminded of the single most traumatizing event you’ve ever experienced in your life.

but also i love lyra and believe she could no no harm soo 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

So my friend @hathorneheiress has helpfully posted that Indigo books has a free preview of The Grandest Game and I went to read the available chapters. If I'm being honest, the prologue legit sounded like I was reading another flashback sequence with Jameson and Tobias. I also can tell that Lyra comes from the same sort of place as Avery, maybe a different life and other struggles but still same gig. We've seen this.

In all honesty, I keep coming back to this fear that JLB is just going to ruin what she already has with the current four books and the characters there. If the characters literally sound like the same characters she just finished hashing out and claims to be leaving behind, then I believe that as a reader, I am going to find myself constantly living in the past with The Inheritance Games books and the old characters as I read this book. I don't think I'll even be able to see them as separate characters because I might just confuse them for Avery or Jameson. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but realistically, this might end up making our new mains carbon copies of the old and why should they? If she already took it upon herself to write a new series with three new main characters, they deserve to be fleshed out properly and not to sound like Jameson, Avery, and girl Xander.

And the scenes? I already see the literal sequence play by play being the same as Avery's start in TIG. Lyra deserves better. Rohan deserves better. Gigi and Savannah deserve better. Look, I may not want to go into this book with preconceived notions but The Brothers Hawthorne gave us the real preview. We already have a feel for Rohan, Gigi, and Savannah. We said that Rohan is another Jameson, Gigi is a mix of Xander AND Jameson and Savannah is girl Grayson as stated by Xander himself. But from the looks of it, Lyra will be a mix of Avery and Grayson. That's why I HATE that I keep getting feelings of doubt and fear regarding my expectations for The Grandest Game.

ok so i made the mistake of thinking about quil’s keefitz fic and. yeah i’m being emo over keefitz and bodies of water again- 

i just. i want keefe to think of fitz every time he sees a lakeshore. 

every time he sees the sun over the calm water. i want keefe to be unable to escape all the days the two of them would spend splashing around and laughing in everglen’s lake as kids. i want him to remember days spent finding cool rocks, and seeing who could dive deeper than the other, and that one time fitz threw biana in the lake because siblings will be siblings, and all the splashing matches, and the times where keefe would pretend to be a fish - in water and out of water - just to see fitz laugh, and the evenings where they’d just float on their backs and listen to the birds chirp and chat idly. i want keefe to be able to shove the aching absence of all of that aside until he sees a still lake surrounded by trees, and then i want it to bubble up until he has to turn away, run away. because keefe can’t forget about how the lake was always still until they’d jump in, and fitz isn’t there to jump in with him anymore, so there’s no use in jumping at all.

i want fitz to think of keefe every time he sees a seashore. 

every time he watches a wave collide with the sand, whether it be gentle or pounding. i want him to think about all the times that keefe asked about surfing after fitz slipped up and mentioned that humans have ocean sports like surfing, all the pleading puppy eyes keefe shot him, because he wanted to try it someday. i want fitz to think about how keefe would talk about diving to see the ocean fish and the ocean rocks, and how close he used to hold the idea to his heart, even though he never admitted it to keefe. i want fitz to remember how he was the one who taught keefe how to swim, and how keefe was so proud of becoming a stronger swimmer in the long run, and wondering if it helps keefe out in the waves. i want him to remember all the times that keefe drew him out of academia hell and into the lake to wind down, all the times that he looked at keefe in the lake and knew he was special enough that he’d remember little moments like those far into the future. and then i want fitz to remember that he’s staring at an ocean, and the ocean’s just for keefe, because it’s always crashing into the shore and only keefe is brave enough to embrace that. 

i want them to have irrevocable impacts on each other, even if they’ve left each other in the dust. even when the familiar water soaking their skin is gone. even when the familiarity between the two of them is gone.

you’re spending your first christmas with matt and he decides to gift you something you two have always wanted!!

“okay keep your eyes closed sweetheart, ‘kay?” matt says while leading you through the quiet apartment. this year was your first christmas together, you two had moved into together a little over 8 months ago and it was the best decision you could’ve made. “matt i swear if i fall or get bumped into a wall its gonna be ugly.” you giggled, obviously not serious.

“yeah yeah baby, just follow my lead, slowly..” you can hear the grin in his voice but decide to ignore it. “are we almost there?? i wanna see my gift already” you complain, trying to sneak a peak by opening your eyes the slightest. “ah ah ah, you better keep your those closed, you’ll ruin the surprise.” just as he said that your now seated on the big couch, sensing the soft pillows laying against it you begin to get comfortable.

“now can i?? ughhh” you groan, now with your hands over your eyes. you hear matt laugh at your neediness, that was until you heard some shuffling. “give me a second, so needy are ya?” he rolls his eyes and prays that the kitty in his arms stays silent.

“okay now be careful, it could be anything you know.” he warns, your face scrunches as you mentally prepare yourself for this gift, he walks over to you and starts to place the kitty in your arms. “matt you’re scaring me..” before you could feel the soft fur he lifts back up the cat and tries to reassure you. “sweetheart don’t be scared, i promise i would never give you something dangerous. now hands out please?”

you reach out your hands and smile at his caring words, the way his voice always put you at ease immediately always warmed your heart. your thoughts are interrupted by the soft meows and soft fur against your fingers, you immediately open your eyes and freeze in shock. “matt, matt, matt. no you fucking didn’t.” your eyes now wide as ever as you cradle the baby kitten in your warm sweater, your eyes start to tear up anf you look up at your boyfriend who now has a sweet smile across his face.

“merry christmas sweet girl” you stand up and he takes you in his arms, now giggling as he wipes away the happy tears that fall down your cheeks. “y-you’re crying baby?” he laughs “well yeah! l-look at him matt! hes so adorable oh my god thank you.” you laugh as more tears fall down. “you deserve everything and anything ever, i live to see m’girl happy.” he says while kissing your forehead.
