Something Something Avatar The Last Airbender was fundamentally about showing the horrible long-lasting effects of both war and violence in a grand sense (the way people suffer under fire nation occupation including the air nomad genocide and the state of the southern water tribe) but also a personal sense (zukos entire arch) and the show goes to great lengths to avoid glorifying war, often specifically choosing only depict the aftermath of terrible violence while not graphically depicting the violence itself.

And I think it's a profound misunderstanding, maybe even an insult to the source text to continually depict gratuitous death and violence as a focal point of the live action.

Spider just being immune to Pandora's wildlife, like the boy was playing with viperwolves as a kid and he can walk straight through a herd of Hammerhead titanotere without getting stampled.

The Sully kids just accept it without question

The adults are confused, concerned and a little scared

jake and neytiri, who never really kept tabs on spider when he was out in the forest, choking on their dinner as their kids relay stories of him playing with viperwolf cubs while their mother watch on, how he managed to help a young thanator who had gotten his foot between som rocks without getting so much as growled at, how he could sleep on the forest floor amongst a migrating herd of titanotere carefully avoiding him, one of the older females gently waking him and guiding him to a safer sleeping location.

at first they don't believe the tales their children tell, they don't even really ask spider all that much, until some of the hunters witness it for themselves. they come across spider sleeping in a tree and a thanator prowling close by, but when they go to drive it off, he yells at them, claiming that his friend is just watching over him while he sleeps.

then they begin to seek the boy out during the day, and find that it is very much true and it is utterly fucking terrifying at first. but as the days go by, the stories piling up, they just accept it, this is who the child is and no one is willing to mess with his growing 'herd' of friends. the sully kids had sorta just accepted it as spider's thing from the very beginning, so that wasn't very hard for them to do.

norm and max want to have a goddamned stroke when they hear about the shit spider gets into, they try to get him to stop just in case his luck wears off, but to no avail.

The village just sorta goes with what the sully's say cause that's just easier than trying to fight it, but its so weird just watching this very human child romp and play with pandora's most dangerous creatures.

don't even get me started on the metkayina. they watch this boy make tsurak's look like puppy dogs and akula like common house guppies. tonowari is baffled and ronal is further convinced that he is a miracle from eywa. both want to wrap the boy up in their arms and never let him out into the world again because for eywa's sake that boy is going to give them a heart attack.

Korra-Avatar: The Legend of Korra

Qualifications:

Korra is not only bisexual, having dated both Asami Sato and Mako, but was and still is disabled by the end of the series. She doesn't magically get better from being poisoned, she's forced to relearn a lot of things: how to walk, how to do things for herself, and even how to fight properly. Her physical disabilities are mixed with extensive trauma and PTSD that prevents her from doing her job as the Avatar throughout Book 4: Balance.

Canonically bisexual, has PTSD, and spent a while partially paralyzed and using a wheelchair.

Bisexual badass who ended up going through about 5038309340 traumatizing events, one of which involved mercury poisoning that had her unable to walk for about a year and left her with lasting PTSD and depression (though again the depression is a little less clear wheras the PTSD was obviously intended to be read as such). There was also her shadow self, but it's unclear whether that was a form of psychosis or a literal spirit. In short, she's bi and has PTSD if you want to stick with the more long term, obviously canon bits.

Propaganda:

She's the Avatar, you gotta deal with it! But, seriously, Avatar Korra was the first onscreen LBGT+ character in the Avatar franchise alongside her girlfriend Asami Sato. While limited in what could be shown onscreen, the two were explictly portrayed as a couple in the 2016 Dark Horse comic "Legend of Korra: Turf Wars". Likewise, her disability never quite went away. She still struggled with trauma, PTSD, and learning how to do things for herself again for two to three years in the time between books 3 and 4 that were shown off in flashbacks during her solo episodes.

She's canonically bi and has PTSD, and disability was an incredibly important theme for her in her show's final season.

The creators of Korra, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, fought long and hard for their show, including taking a massive budget slash circa book 4 to avoid firing half their staff. Likewise, they took to Tumblr and other social media in 2014 to state firmly that Korra and Asami were both bisexual and in love. nd here is the final painting for my Avatar: The Last Airbender series! Avatar Aang himself, master of the Four Elements and savior of the world.

The cartoon was significant for me when I was growing up. Now that the live action is releasing tommorow, after 20 years since the original I felt that its the time to create my tribute.

This was the first one of the three (Katara, Sokka) that I made, and the piece I spent the least amount of time on. I also had plans for more characters but time constraints wont allow me to work on them just yet! Perhaps in the future.
