(Belated) Binderary Book 2024

My first year participating in Binderary and I'm 2/2 with my goals, albeit slightly late (even with the added leap day).

Goal No. 1: Bind a book!

This fic is an orphaned work, with no author available for me to reach out to. Convenient, since it was a last-minute decision.

Goal No. 2: Finish typesetting the fic that got me into this whole bookbinding/fanbinding hobby!

Bad Boys JEDI Style is a 217 chapter, 908k word "comedy of errors: in which our heroes are recruited to film a reality holo-drama". Much to my despair, the fic I loved had been deleted from every site it was uploaded to, and I was left kicking myself for not having downloaded a copy from AO3.

Shout out to Kam and Lofe, whose wonderful Binderary demos were put to use in the making of this book! Kam's French Double-Core endbands demo was super helpful, sizing up the 'textblock' and components made it easy to actually see what's happening with the sewing. Loffe's demo introduced me to the split-board binding technique and, sleep-deprived hiccup notwithstanding, I think I might find it easier then bradel style binding! Need to bind more books to know for sure (such a hardship 😔).

In other new-s, I took my dad's recent workshop baby for a spin. The bookbinding plough works like a dream! I tried a hidden fore-edge painting for the first time (just a solid colour), but the purple is lost under the Payne's Gray basecoat I applied to the silver painted edges. Adding ribbon to the cover was also new (mostly due to the fact that I never remember until the endpapers are already pasted down).

On the Design

Cover

This is a Team Thunderclap!Ye Xiu AU, so the cover was based on Team Thunderclap's uniforms from the donghua (from the one screencap of the team I found, see below): purple across the shoulders and forearms of their jackets with a yellow stripe down the centre. I added silver ribbon as a nod to the white of the jackets as well as the grey gear of the team's logo. Also in reference to the title: yellow=sunlight, silver=moonlight.

Title Page

The title page stumped me for a while. While brainstorming title page design ideas, I thought about what the title means. In English it's poetic but nonsensical, so I wondered if maybe it held some meaning in Chinese?

As it turns out, it does. Kind of. Maybe. (If I stretch and reach for it, it makes sense). According to a quick search of one webpage for each query, "'White Moonlight' usually refers to a person or thing that is elusive in the heart, has always been loved, but cannot be touched" or "an 'unforgettable first love'." The sunbeam itself might be Ye Xiu, the figurative ray of light, the hero, the gaming idol. Or 'catching a sunbeam' could refer to how "sunflowers turn their heads to catch every sunbeam."

The potential meaning I have cobbled together is how Dai Yanqi turns Ye Xiu's head and captures his heart by sharing the (SanXiu-ified) story of Su Muqiu, the aforementioned white moonlight. Is this what the author intended? Who knows. But it does seem plausible enough to inspire me.

I ended up using both the idea of sunflowers and Thunderclap's uniforms (again). Lightning referencing the team's logo, and also the white colour of a flash of lightning which is kind of like moonlight. The logo's background is blue, as is the uniform as seen on the cover of the manhua featuring the captain Xiao Shiqin (see below), so I made the background blue-purple.

Endpapers

The (not-actually-)sunflowers carried over to the endpapers, as well as the grey colour from the gear in Thunderclap's logo.

Endbands

Kept these simple. A solid purple, as close as I could get to the bookcloth. I didn't want to draw attention away from the stripes on the covers or the silver edges.

Probably could've gone for thicker cores.

The text

For the scene breaks I used a special character of a gear. The cog also looks like a sun. Which is fun because it can reference Thunderclap, the title (sunbeam), and my design choice of sunflowers.

I reused the lightning image at 50% opacity as a background to set apart the backmatter.

Misc.

Recently, I've begun to increase my efforts of preseving fanfiction and safeguarding the stories I love from purges and takedowns. (Sparked by the December 2023 scandal about Sony announcing an upcoming removal of content including the movies and TV shows that people have purchased).

-- For sure, there is a lot of small things in the designs.

M: When I look at just the line arts, I always think that they are drawn in a very loose way, and a lot of those small things are skillfully drawn in a simplified way/omitted. It's something that only somebody with a lot of practice can do. Even newcomers can draw precisely, if they look at a drawing and try to copy it, but the most important thing is not to draw something that is not necessary. If you have to later erase something that you drew, then you give yourself twice the amount of work, but only people with a lot of skill can simply not draw too much to begin with.

-- Then it must have been a good opportunity to learn for the younger staff members, I'd guess?

M: They were all very desperate [to get the job done] and working while on the brink of death.

-- The ice in the skating scenes is very realistic, too. Was it a request from the Director?

M: Yeah. Since the first PV. Even I have watched some figure skating on DVD, so it was something that was on my mind, too. In case of ice shows, the lights are very elaborate, and your eyes are really drawn to the ice, cut with blades of skaters' shoes. Because of how it sparkles. I was wondering if it would be possible to try to achieve this effect, but I thought that if I touched this subject, we all were going to suffer, so I kept quiet. But then I decided that I want to have those cuts in the ice, after all. All were drawn on the same layer, but then split into multiple layers. We put at least three such layers on the surface of the ice.

[Notes: Long time no rant, so...

((Just in case, newer readers may not be aware, that I'm a "fujo-hater" 😂 But fret not, I'm not against seeing relationship between Yuuri and Victor as romantic or against people reading BL, but I'm very much against fujos, who as it was in the case of YoI, try to "teach"/press the creators/other staff members to make the canon bend to their doujinshi tropes.))

The talk about staff members on the brink of death reminded me about that huge controversy about MAPPA that happened last year 💀 It's not a secret that Sayo was overworking animators during YoI and there are still screenshots of animators calling her names on twitter and say condolences to each other, bc of being involved with YoI. So, YoI fandom now hating MAPPA, bc "bad MAPPA, bad working conditions, poor animators...", while demanding that they should stop producing shonens, bc they should make YoI instead is well... an example of how spending time in an echo chamber and just following the crowd can make you a huge hypocrite.

It should also be said that it's not that those shonens are "just for boys" or anything like that if we talk about this topic, btw. GoYuu from JJK (Gojo x Yuuji) is so popular with fujos that it has now more views in total on pixiv than VicYuu, and gets more views in 10-30 min than VicYuu gets in 24 hours (a huge credit for that should ofc go to YoI's IP holders, as they've been trying to starve the fandom to death since 2018, basically...) It's really ironic that it's YoI fans who are so much against MAPPA making those popular shonens, bc so many Jp VicYuu fujos moved to GoYuu (it's basically the same trope "the most awesome, strong and cool man in the world the seme" x "fujoshi avatar the main character in the center of the universe the uke") - one of the reasons, why Jp fans don't attack MAPPA - they very much enjoy those shonens. (Another is that they can read and it's very easy to check who owns the IP.)

To sum up, as always, it's very unfair for YoI fans to call Otsuka CEO the greedy homophobic liar, while absolutely refusing to see the bigger picture.]

Going to VeXpo was so fun!

I took my mum, obviously, and we cosplayed for the first half of the day and then changed into regular clothes for the second half because it was WARM in that con hall.

The first thing we did was go to the maid cafe, they didn't recognise me but I think that was good actually! The cake was really tasty (although there was too much cream for me to be able to eat so I made mum take most of that) and we got chekkis and just it was really nice

Then we wandered about the shops a bit, queued for ages to buy a penlight (they did run out of stock later so i think waiting was worth it)

Said hi to a vtuber I know

Wandered around shops more

Attended Nina and Lumi's agency vs indie panel, honestly was mostly stuff I was already aware of but it was very meta and interesting to hear the way they both approach vtubing, goals and progress and the amount of time they spend working on stream stuff

Definitely made me feel like I wanted to work harder

Then a viewer of mine dmed me to say that he had found some coco merch (doujinshi) (sfw) and he had asked them to put it aside for me so i could go and ask for it since they only had 1 copy of each SO i bought those

they were a little expensive but there was nothing else coco in the entire con

honestly merchwise it was mostly genshin and honkai, some enstars and vocaloid, vtubers it was mostly hololive myth, a decent amount of promise and then vshojo and some of the really big indie talents

i was a little disappointed and didn't end up buying much but honestly it's for the best, my wallet wasn't really in the position to be spending

changed into normal clothes because i was dying

met up with a vtuber i know who was working there to talk for a bit before they had to get back to work, introduced myself to an a******** talent (who is friends with that person) by my real name by accident and wanted to curl up on the ground

went back to the maid cafe now i wasn't in cosplay (just to the guy on the merch counter, not IN the maid cafe they were very very busy i didn't want to attention whore) and said hi and they asked who my favourite was while i was picking up the keychain i wanted to buy and i ended up being like oh well um. i'm purity so. it has to be macaron.

AND THEY WERE LIKE omg [real name] you're here how are you doing! and it made me so happy they remembered me (they didn't recognise me because i had a pretty dramatic appearance change since years ago)

i really hope one day maybe i can get it together and be active and functional and then i can audition next time they open and never let them down again

what else

oh then i met the viewer who helped me get the coco merch so i could sign the passport for them! i'm nervous about that because i worry a lot about not looking completely like my avatar but they were very kind

i also ran into ami amami (on an ipad) and i got to talk to her about how i followed her back when she was in shirayuri pro and i lost track of her when she became a frog but i was happy i found her again and she inspires me a lot to be a kaigai idol

and she told me that if i ever wanted to dm her for advice or anything like that i could and like

we spoke for a while actually and it was pretty emotional but i'm really happy and now i really want to do my best so i can be an idol and make the people that inspire me proud to be my inspirations

and maybe share a virtual stage with them one day...

then i hunted down another vtuber who was there to say hi and then two more vtubers i'd been trying to find found us so we chatted for a little bit but then i started reaching the end of my energy so i had to leave and collapse for a little bit

i managed to get JUST enough energy that i when i got a message from one of those vtubers that they were shutting the hall to prepare for the concert i was able to get up and queue for it

but i nearly gave up honestly, standing in that queue, completely drained of energy

we got in there and i sat by the door because i thought i was just completely burnt out and would have to leave part way through the concert

a ground of mint fantome wota with the proper jackets sat near us though and were doing all the wotagei to all of the songs so i also got my penlights and honestly it was so fun like

cheering for all the singers like that, knowing my little light was visible and they could see another person cheering for them

if i ever can't be a vtuber anymore, i'm becoming a full time idol supporter. it's a joyous experience.

that's not even to mention the fact that the singers were. amazing. the screen kept on glitching but other than one time where the video cut out (i think during one of idol's talents songs?) the audio was perfect and god

eien's talents were all just. mindblowingly amazing even if they rickrolled us, the songs were just... they sung them perfectly

idol only got one song each and a lot of them were really good! one of them swore a lot and me and mum were like :0 wao

bonnie did 4 city pop songs and also was very cute, good dog/good dog

algorhythm project was. well first off the guy introduced himself as 'that concert guy' because of the time that that was a whole meme with the hair toggle and honestly very cool that he takes that whole event in stride. good singer. there were some girls in the row in front of me that literally screamed hysterically when he appeared like damn they were in love

and then the woman from algorhythm was enchanting. original thai song, just beautifully sung and then the final song she sung was ghost rule (deco*27) and it was just a perfect way to end the concert and her voice was so POWERFUL and vivid and full and just

anyway it was really inspiring and now i need to work extra hard so i can perform like that one day and stop getting cold feet about my own little silly karaoke streams!!!

1st art piece 🎨 Karasu and my avatar, his wife, named Sha "Yuri" Hargreaves. I'm gonna write and illustrate a webcomic/doujinshi about our romance someday, just been doing it in bits and pieces on my personal pages online, and otherwise mostly in private diaries based on my dreams and pseudo-hallucinations (I have depressive psychosis and a fantasy prone personality - i'm a total dreamer ♡) ... Karasu is also gonna be adapted into the original webcomics i've been writing for over 20 years with my brothers and best friend too! The story is basically the same for both, but slightly different cos one is original while the other is the YYH version: Karasu astral projects and begins to haunt Sha's dreams as she is a spiritually sensitive human (descended from faeries, mind you, on this note), and he coaxes her into reviving him from the vampyre tree Kurama had trapped him in, as Sha works with plants (in the original series, she is actually the Seasonal Spring Warrior too), and she ends up reviving him, and uses her healing abilities from being part faerie to help him, but has to go the extra mile and use her life force and blood transfusion to help the Crow recover all the way. This bonds them together, and they end up falling in love in the end. ♡ Here my avatar has blonde hair as I was bleaching and dying my hair blonde back then. :3

Awe thank you, you're so sweet! It's a colour swapped Bouquet from Hyperdimesnion Neptunia. *cue rambling* I actually originally started out my blog posting a few nice looking colourswapped Neptunia characters (this was done before I had a tablet) and opening myself up for Neptunia fanfiction only I never noticed my answer box was closed at the time. Like I mentioned in a previous post, because of several reasons icnlduing xenophobia I quit writing fanfiction and only got back in to it recently and I still like the Neptunia games. Sure the spin-offs especially after Super Neptune RPG have sucked (though the good news about the most recent, Sisters VS Sisters is tempting me to pick the series up again) and because of the fanservice there are a lot of perverts in the fandom but I don't feel like the writing and thinking that goes into these games get enough credit. I love the storylines, the bonds and the characters. So I ended up deciding to stick with colour swapped Neptunia pictures for my profile.

My avatar is, well as mentioned, a character named Bouquet, and I colour swapped her blue-themed the moment I took on the Tetsuna monniker which was prompted by Vesper after we had this conversation about how jealous I was in regards to genderbent Kuroko because of the number of doujinshi hentai I've read in which the GOM or a specific character has a thing for a genderbent Kuroko. I mean, Tetsuna Kuroko gets all the action, so hereby I am Tetsuna now.

Doujinshi event updates!!!

My books for Chthonios Epic 3 arrived and they look GORGEOUS!

I got gold foiling done over the titles on both covers and I’m really pleased with how they turned out! I also love how the paper texture makes Riptide’s art look like a real painting <3

I also posted some sample pages on Pixiv, so please take a look at those if you’re interested (R-18 content included, so you’ll need to be an adult logged into an account to view.)

I’m planning to distribute my book via pixiv BOOTH, which has international shipping available via proxy. The book will cost 1300yen (about $8 USD) plus shipping.

Hades Doujinshi project news & Cover reveal!

来年2月1日〜2日のHadesシリーズWebオンリーイベント「クトニオス叙事詩3」のために、パトアキザグ(アキザグ、パトザグ、そしてリバ有りパトアキパト) 『Closest To My Heart』/『だれよりも心を許している男』という英和バイリンガル小説＆漫画の本を出させていただきます。表紙とコミックは、RIPTIDE様が描いてくださいました♡ どうぞよろしくお願い致します。

So I haven’t been around much on social media for the last several weeks, particularly tumblr (except for perhaps the occasional reblog or two haha.) Sorry about that! But the reason is because I signed up to participate as a circle for a Japanese Hades game series fan event, Chthonios Epic 3, currently scheduled to be held on February 1-2 next year. And after working hard on it nonstop for the last almost two months, I’ve just turned in my doujinshi manuscript: a bilingual physical edition of Closest To My Heart, including both the original English version and a brand-new Japanese translation. So good news if you liked that story and/or would like to give it a go reading it in Japanese!

I also got in touch with Riptide, who drew a comic version of the story, and I was so thrilled when they kindly agreed not only to draw a beautiful cover for the book version (as seen above!) but they also helped me prepare their comic for printing, AND they even re-edited the comic so it could have a proper Japanese version as well! Basically I couldn’t have done this without them and I am SO grateful!!! Along with DH who is my usual Japanese editor/beta reader, I hope we managed to put together a decent little book. It’s 114 pages total and I can’t wait to hold it in my hands!!!

I’m still in the middle of prepping for the event & making decisions about how to distribute and stuff like that, but if you’re interested in buying a copy (from an extremely limited print run lol), more details are forthcoming. Either way, for now I can say if you’re a Hades fan, you ought to come pay a visit to the event in February, since it’s all online! I believe they’re also still accepting sign-ups for circles to participate through mid-January… you can set up a booth even for things like fanworks not newly created for the event, merch, or just if you wanted to display your own Hades & Hades 2 artwork & stories <3

While I would not call it a discourse, most of the stuff about the twins were comments on video of their supports on Youtube. but honestly it's just the Robicina situation all over again, we ain't going to see it on site like tumblr or pixiv or deviant art, especially seeing the rather inacitivity of the Engage fanbase when it comes to shipping. Heck for a record the year 3 houses came out, otaku republic was lready filled with 1000 of doujinshi while Engage has 0 of them

At least it's good to know it's happening somewhere I'm not involved. I really couldn't care less about Avatar ships.

Ich zeichne seit meinem 10 Lebensjahr. Angefangen hat meine Leidenschaft mit Animes wie Beyblade, Digimon und Yu-Gi-Oh! welche um die Mittagszeit im Fernsehen liefen. Ich habe Fanarts aus Google und dem damaligen SchülerVZ gezogen und in einen Ordner gesammelt. Gott war ich glücklich. So richtig stolz war ich, als ich feststellte, dass meine Kunstwerke ebenfalls Verbreitung fanden. Das war für mich das Zeichen, dass meine Werke gut ankamen. Ich bin also mit einem ganz anderen Grundsatz groß geworden als vielleicht andere Künstler. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ

Character PSD´s, Carrd Vorlagen und Themes nehme ich explizit aus meinem Text heraus, da diese mit vorhandenen Tools erschaffen wurden und es nur ein gewisses Geschick oder Grundwissen bedarf, um diese nachzubauen bzw. selber zu machen.

Wer sich ein Profil für ein Rollenspiel (kurz: RPG) erstellt, bewegt sich rechtlich auf ganz dünnen Eis. Verwendest du reale Persnen wie Promis, Models oder andere Personen des öffentlichen Lebens oder eventuell Privatpersonen, verletzt du damit folgende Rechte: - Das Urheberrecht - Das Persönlichkeitsrecht / Das Recht am eigenen Bild Das Urheberrecht bezieht sich auf den Fotografen. Dabei ist es wurscht, ob es sich dabei um ein professionelles Foto oder nur ein Schnappschuss handelt. Das Persönlichkeitsrecht (KUG) bezieht sich auf die fotografierte Person. Bei gewerblichen Fotografien, Blogs oder Influencer kann sogar das Datenschutzgesetz (DSGVO) greifen. Kurz um: Es ist verboten fremde Personen als Avatar für seine RPG´s zu verwenden. Eine Aussnahme bilden Stockfotos, die die entweder bezahlt hast oder dir frei zur Verfügung stehen. Ansonsten empfehle ich dir Ausschnitte (Screenshots) aus Filmen und Serien zu nehmen. Das ist zwar ebenfalls vorboten, aber da wird zu Werbezwecken gerne mal ein Auge zugedrückt.

Diese Gesetze gelten übrigens auch für GIFs und Memes.

Ebenso verhält es sich mit jeglicher Art von Fanwerken. Seien es Fanarts, Fanfictions, Doujinshis, etc. Die Veröffentlichung und vor allem der Verkauf sind verboten. Natürlich drücken die meisten Schöpfer ihrer Werke zu Werbezwecken ein Auge zu. Aber legal ist es trotzdem nicht. Mehr könnt ihr hier lesen.

Ebenso verhält es sich mit der Verbreitung von Anime, Manga und Cartoon Screenshots. Eigentlich durch das Urheberrecht verboten, aber es wird ein Auge zugedrückt. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Google klaut keine Bilder, es verlinkt sie nur. Ebenso bei Pinterest, nur dass User die Bilder pinnen

Wenn wir also strikt nach der Gesetzeslage gehen, dürfte niemand etwas. Und das gilt für jegliches Bildmaterial und nicht nur für Tumblr. Auch auf Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram und anderen sozialen Plattformen posten Künstler ihre Werke. Es ist also egal ob ihr euch nur mit der Tumblr-Community anlegt oder auch mit Künstlern und Kreativschaffenden von anderen Plattformen. Ihr macht euch unbeliebt, sobald ihr etwas herunterladet und wo anders wieder hochladet. Setzt Credits. Aber auch das schützt euch nicht, wenn ihr vorher nicht das Einverständnis der Person eingeholt habt. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ

Und in dem Fall kann ich meine Künstlerkollegen nicht verstehen. Wofür zeichnen wir Bilder, schreiben Fanfiktions, machen Memes und GIFs, wenn nicht, um andere damit glücklich zu machen und sie zu verbreiten? Worin besteht der Sinn der Kunst, wenn nicht um sie mit anderen zu teilen? Bitte nehmt meine Bilder und tragt sie in die Welt hinaus. Credits wären schön, aber ich reiße euch nicht den Kopf ab, wenn ihr es nicht tut. Solange ihr meine Werke nicht verkauft oder als eures ausgebt, habt spaß damit. Verarbeitet sie auch ruhig in euren Werken. Mir ist das egal. Lasst eurer Kreativität freien Lauf.

Lasst allerdings die Finger von Commisions (Auftragswerken). In dem Punkt pflichte in dem Schreiber bei.

Kleiner Leitfaden über Tumblr Etikette und den richtigen Umgang mit Ressourcen. Aus aktuellem Anlass. Fix zusammengeschustert, Ergänzungen sind willkommen!

Tumblr ist als Blogging-Plattform, durch globale Vernetzung über Tags und die Reblog-Kultur, nicht vergleichbar mit anderen sozialen Netzwerken wie z.B. das alte VZ. Wer einen Account besitzt, sollte sich dieser Tatsache zuallerst bewusst sein. Tumblr besitzt seine ganz eigene Etikette und es gehört zum guten Ton, sich darüber zu informieren und sich danach zu richten wann immer möglich.

Auch wenn wir weitestgehend in unserer Nische bleiben, sind wir nicht allein auf der Plattform. User, die Rollenspiel Ressourcen kreieren wie Charakter PSDs und Carrd Vorlagen, Autoren von Fanfics, Gif Maker, Theme Maker, Fanart-Zeichner und andere kreativ Schaffende, genießen auf Tumblr mehr als irgendwo anders, viel Respekt und Unterstützung von ihren Communities. Diese Einstellung kann man sich gerne zum Vorbild nehmen (persönliche Meinung des Autors)!

Grundsätzlich gilt: Rebloggen ja, Reposten nein! Letzteres bedeutet, ein Gif oder Bild abzuspeichern und ohne Quellenangabe neu zu posten. Das ist wirklich ein riesen No-no hier, man macht sich sehr unbeliebt damit. Grafiken von Google oder auch Pinterest sind grundsätzlich geklaut (oft von Tumblr) und ebenfalls mit Vorsicht zu behandeln. Wenn man das Bild/Gif schön findet und unbedingt auf dem Blog haben möchte, lohnt es sich ein paar Minuten Zeit zu investieren und die Quelle zu tracken. Google-Links führen oft zurück zu Tumblr, von hier lässt sich das Set dann rebloggen oder man kann den Eigentümer dann auch fragen, ob man sein Werk mit Credit benutzen darf.

Rollenspiel Ressourcen aka Templates/PSDs (aber auch Carrds) werden von ihren Machern meistens auf Extrablogs zur Verfügung gestellt. Es lohnt sich hier den Blog zu besuchen und den Pinned Post zu lesen oder nach einem Rules Link zu schauen. Die meisten (nicht alle) Content Creator wünschen Credit! Auch wenn man selber noch Arbeit und Mühe in den Edit steckt ist es nicht angebracht, das Werk als eigenes auszugeben am Ende. Credit kann klein und unauffällig, ganz unten im Post unter einen Cut oder sogar in die Tags geschrieben werden. Es stört nicht, es macht nichts mit der Blogästhetik, es ist einfach nur anständig anzugeben woher man die Basis für seinen Edit hatte.

Commissions: Egal ob Zeichnungen, Promos oder irgendein anderes Werk, das speziell für einen bestimmten User gemacht worden ist, ist ohne Ausnahme tabu für die Eigennutzung.
