Okay, on a more serious note about “Avatar Seven Havens”, the one thing I’m disappointed about with the series is that it seems like Avatar Studios is too afraid of continuing the thread from Korra. I feel like there was a lot of room to really explore the state of the world after Korra, such as the new Airbenders trying to form their own nation, new alliances being formed, the Avatar feeling more and more like a relic of the past due to the advancement of technology.
Instead, they went the post-apocalyptic route. Sounds interesting, but it also feels like it was done because the writers were either afraid of continuing the world expansion started by Korra or just didn’t know how. Personally, I’m leaning towards they didn’t know how considering how Legend of Korra approached more serious topics (coughnonbenderdiscriminationcough). So instead of dealing with things that are beyond their capabilities, such as complex politics, they wipe the board clean so that it’s back to spirits and magic.
That’s the one thing I’m disappointed by. I’m actually fine with everything else. Korra being a hated figure could work as a meta-narrative on Korra’s actual reputation in the fanbase. The Avatar being a hated figure is something I actually really like since that’s a natural development for this kind of character. If there’s a superhuman figure existing in the world whose main responsibility is keeping the peace between the nations, then none of the nations actually have freedom/autonomy since the Avatar is the world police. It makes sense that the Avatar would eventually be hated once the people realize they have to abide by this superhuman’s authority, especially since the Korra series introduced democracy.
But the post-apocalyptic setting…it feels like a cop-out. In my opinion, it feels like Nickelodeon didnt want the Avatar Universe to get too complex, so they reset the world in a way that the main focus will be on more cartoonish concepts. Sure, post-apocalyptic can still be dark, but the politics of Korra (and even ATLA) are gone now. Even though I have MAJOR gripes with how Korra approached politics, the show at least had the courage to take it on. But now, Nick seems to be pushing for the Avatar Universe to be a lot safer and to take less risks. I mean, look at the ATLA Netflix show, they took away Sokka’s misogyny because they thought it was too much for present day audiences.
I guess we’ll see how this goes. I like some of the ideas, but I’m skeptical overall.

I don't know why I feel so numb towards the new Avatar announcement. Like I'm not excited for it. But I'm also not as devastated and pessimistic about it as a lot of people are about it.
Like yeah, Korra haters are crawling out of the mud and shit again, but they would've taken ANY excuse to hate on her. Like, even if it were all sunshines and rainbows in a post Korra world they would probably be going on about how she was a 'weak avatar with no accomplishments' or a Mary Sue or something like that.
Tumblr media
I'm cautiously suspecting that Avatar Studios are going for a Kuruk-style story with Korra, where she was somehow defamed. It seems that the Avatar books were a sort of testing ground for them, as the 'Avatar's twin' plotline was also teased in the Roku book.
I understand why this upsets some people, as it gives Korra an ultimately unhappy life and leaves her as hated in-world. However, I don't think we should jump to conclusions of Bryke somehow wanting to 'destroy' Korra's character, just because they didn't give her a happy life. Characters like the aforementioned Kuruk, and fan favourite Toph Beifong didn't have 'happy endings' in the traditional sense, but that enhances their characters, in my opinion. Like yeah, it's tragic that sometimes storylines are sad- but that doesn't make them bad storylines.
Is it a bummer that Korra seemingly had a tragic life? Yeah. But also, she's the Avatar, and would inevitably face a lot of strife in her life- and not do things perfectly. Aang also faced difficulties and had problems in his adult life.
It also feels like there's a potential meta storyline going on there, potentially having the in world hate towards Korra tied to the IRL hate towards Korra. This isn't the first time Korra's character has been used for more meta-style commentary, as a lot of her character surrounded her trying to measure up to Aang, whilie also trying to be her own person- a potential coentary on what making a follow up to atla must've been like.
Tumblr media
And also- we are JUMPING to conclusions over leaks and blurbs.
I think my main personal concerns with the Seven Havens lie with the fact that it feels like a soft reboot of sorts. With tlok, despite its technological advancements, which I did have issues with, we see very clearly how we got to point A to point B. The world Korra inhabits feels the same as the world Aang inhabits.
Seven Havens seems to have had a post apocalyptic vibe, where the world has changed drastically, reshaping the four nations into seven new 'havens' and changing the way the Avatar is percieved. It feels like a huge departure from the previous series - which could be fine- but also feels like waste.
The world of Avatar is so complex and has been built up through multiple series, books and comics. To have it reshaped completely feels like throwing out such a rich compendium of lore and stories.
It also worries me, as it likely throws away tlok's very imteresting work with politics. While tlok didn't always tackle the dissection if politics correctly, it at least had the courage to discuss these complex topics. Getting rid of the four nations will probably toss away a lot of these politocal effects of Korra's tenure as Avatar, for example- the democratisation of the Earth Kingdom.
Reading the atla comics (while the fandom loves to bitch and moan about them) is a satisfying experience, because I get to see the building blocks for Korra's time being set up- for example the creation of Republic City. However, my concern is that any future tlok comics will feel unimportant- due to the fact that the characters accomplishments will likely be undone several years later.
I also worry that they're going to try to 'depoliticise' the next show. Dismantling tloks' complex political climate is one alarm bell. Making the new avatar a young child, seemingly even younger than Aang, despite a good chunk of the fans being adults at this point, feels like its hinting towards making the show less complex and 'grown up'. Of course, a protagonist being a certain age doesn't necessarily mean the target audience is supposed to be that age too- however it does set a model of how the world will be mainly shown to us- through the eyes of a young child.
And while Avatar gave us a serious show for kids- atla being relatively deeper than most kids shows of its time, I don't know if Seven Havens will be able to replicate that perfect storm, especially with a lot of kids media nowadays being so heavily scrutinised and policed.
Tumblr media
Also not really as hyped for the earthbending twins concept because I already have MY preferred set of earthbending twins. "Oh but one of them is the Avatar and-" don't care. Beifong twins my belovedst.
They should've somehow kept the naming scheme set by Poi & Ping and Wei & Wing it would've been funny.

IT'S LORCHING TIME!
TODAY! In 2 hours! We will be returning to the orchard to harvest some crop. There's a new Avatar The Last Airbender series coming called Avatar: Seven Havens. All we know so far is that it's about a pair of twins, one who is rich and one who is living on the streets. But that, of course, is enough for Lily to make a video about it and compare it to her "enmeshed sisters" Avatar fanfic.

...Alright, she's pretty cute actually.
Idk how I feel about some of the other plot details in the leaks though...
Also, a little recolor below the cut because I feel like these outfits don't really look like Avatar designs and I wanted to see what she'd look like in more traditional Earth Kingdom colors.

The New Avatar Concept is Good, Actually
The leaked concept for the new Avatar series is good, actually. To summarize, the new Avatar seems to be a nine year old earthbending amputee named Pavi. Her twin may or may not also be the avatar. Most of the world is barren and plagued with auroras and storms. And humanity now lives exclusively in seven safe havens across the world.
A post-apocalyptic setting with all new factions and cities sets the stage for characters to go on journeys again like in The Last Airbender, and it lets them introduce entirely new key places all over again. This was one of the main issues with Legend of Korra - most of it took place in Republic City, and when they did travel, they just stayed in other cities without really exploring. This gives a new series a reason to explore again. Meanwhile, there's still lots of past avatars to explore if we want to continue the story of the four nations in other projects.
And the ruins will probably tug at our heartstrings - but the ruins in The Last Airbender were also sad. We just weren't as attached to the ruined Air Temples, or the war-torn Earth Kingdom. But we did feel the impact of the war on the devastated Southern Water Tribe. The scars that the Fire Nation left on the Southern Water Tribe follow Sokka and Katara, and they lead to the invention of bloodbending.
The Last Airbender showed us all four corners of its world, and The Legend of Korra explored almost every special concept from The Last Airbender, from bloodbending, spiritbending, to metalbending, to the Banyon tree, and even made spirit energy into technology. A new series needs a big reset while at the same time going back to the mechanics that people liked about The Last Airbender: a young protagonist taking a trip around the world in a world scarred by war.
Oh, and the war part is just my speculation, but Legend of Korra ended with Varrick inventing Spirit Energy by harnessing the power of the Spirit Vines that are laying around everywhere. And then he made a deadly Spirit Cannon that can literally blow a hole in the boundary between worlds. Kuvira's cannon made a portal in Republic City. Guess what's going to happen to society after that? Development of Spirit Technology is going to boom, especially in the Earth Kingdom where the technology was invented, and in Zaofu, by the way, which is probably the safest place to ride out an apocalypse - except if it started there, I suppose. I'm guessing the new avatar, Pavi, and her sister will be born in the vicinity of the old Earth Kingdom, putting her close to all of this history.
And then one war - just one, with these Spirit Weapons, would likely destabilize the boundary between worlds so badly, that it could create permanent auroras, hostile Spirit Energy storms, and sandstorms. Honestly, this could happen even a decade after the season finale of Legend of Korra with how rapid that society progressed, but Korra could live a hundred years and this threat would be looming the whole time, and also just like weapons development in real life - the threat would just get worse and worse as time passed.
This doesn't make Korra the worst avatar. No avatar has had to keep the balance between post-industrial superpowers with technology that can wipe out the planet. She can't make people make the right choices. But she can preserve humanity after they make the wrong ones.

Aang’s opening monologue:
“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.”
Korra’s opening monologue:
"Earth. Fire. Air. Water. Only the Avatar can master all four elements and bring balance to the world."
The Earth Avatar’s leaked opening monologue:
“My name is Pavi. My world is fire and blood. Once I was an Avatar, a road warrior searching for a righteous cause. As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken. It was hard to know who was more crazy: me, or everyone else. I am the one who runs from both the living and the dead, hunted by scavengers, haunted by those I could not protect. So I exist in this wasteland, a woman reduced to a single instinct: survive.”
