Wishing a happy birthday to the incredible Ava DuVernay! As a writer & aspiring screenwriter, Ava is one of my heroes. Her passion, dedication and respect for her work shines through everything she does, and I’m so grateful for women like her who forge their own path and make their own space in a world that tries to shut them out. Thank you, @ava, and happy birthday! . . [image description: illustration of Ava DuVernay with the quote; "Don't wait for permission. ・・・ Black History All Year 2020 . Ava DuVernay, the first Black woman to win the best feature directing award at Sundance in 2012; the first Black woman to get a Best Director Golden Globe nomination; the first woman of color to direct a Oscar-nominated best picture film; and the first woman to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million domestically. . . She began as a publicist, and she was good at it. Over the years, she developed a voice and vision that flowered into reality as she made more films and documentaries and television that effortlessly combined art and activism across forms. Her social consciousness and her appreciation of good art not only inform her work, but they inform how she works as well. . . DuVernay makes films that defy convention. Her films often seek to invert the tradition of the dehumanization of black people and the black body in the media. In the larger culture where the standard depiction of black people involves the exploitation of suffering, she wields the power of the image to jar her viewer into empathizing with suffering. . . #selma #whentheyseeus #13th #queensugar #thisinthife #iwillfollow #cherishtheday #blackmovies #blackfilm #sundancefilmfestival #longbeachcalifornia #blackgirlmagic #avaduvernay #oneminute #tuesdaythoughts (at Long Beach, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-X0sFagJOQ/?igshid=1pryppobi0b49

Good morning, art lovers. I give to you, this chilly November morning, screenshots from the ceaselessly sultry #QueenSugar. S/o to @Ava DuVernay for the gift that is this show, s/o to her cinematographers for making EVERY shot a moving picture, for somehow capturing that Louisiana humidity and the way it makes black skin glow. THIS is how you film melanin. . Also, can we just pause for a minute and mediate on the symmetry between those last shots of Ralph Angel (@kofisiriboe) and Blue in last night’s episode? What’s it mean, in light of Darla’s revelation, and WHAT was it Blue found at the very end of the episode as credits rolled?!!!! Also, can we just appreciate that we get to live in a time where we get to see @rutina_wesley look SO INCREDIBLY GLOWED UP every episode? I watched that scene twice, marveling that anyone could be so radiant, mA. #MELANIN . These stills are from the most recent, episode 14: “On These I Stand”, for which another pawpin #BlackWoman supreme was the DP: Kira Kelly @thekiragram, as well as from Episode 11: “Fruit of the Flower” for which IMDB lists no cinematographer :( . #staywokeloveart #blackradicalmuseumenthusiasm #blackradicalME #AvaDuVernay #kirakelly #KofiSiriboe #EthanHutchison #NicholasLAshe #RutinaWesley #blackwomen #blackgirlmagic #blackboybrilliance #blackwomenFilmMakers #blackart #Louisiana #director #cinematographer #OWN

Queen Sugar Recap
My name is Tamara and I blog, so my commentary will be very detailed and opinionated.
Women like Nova have had to be strong for so long while living with their insecurities that they don't know a good man when he shows up and shows interest. Understandably, she's been confused and deceived with good intentions that turned out to be of detriment to her, but she has to move past that and allow herself to be loved by someone who genuinely and purely wants what is best for her. She's sabotaging her happiness in fear of failure and disappointment as a result of her needing to feel or be in control in every situation because she's been let down by others. Nova is brilliant, conscious, and woke to social issues in her community, but asleep where her personal life is concerned. She knows what's best for the community but cannot see what's best for her. Funny how she was willing to be the side-piece to a married, White man, but she won't let a good, educated, strong Black man in...Girl, you need a healing in your soul....
Charley and Remy are so beautiful together. Remy seems to genuinely love the Bordelons. The way he apologized and humbled himself while offering to be an accountability partner/big brother to Ralph Angel was awesome. I loved that scene because it showed the softer side of Black male relationships without effeminizing them. I'm happy that Charley's allowing him to be the man that she deserves and needs. Davis's face could have been bought for a penny when he saw how much she honored and praised Remy. He whored around on his wife and now he's filled with jealousy. They never appreciate a good woman until they're gone...
Ralph Angel is very selfish and childish, though I understand his past plays a major factor in his behavior. He judges Darla and feels like his past issues were incomparable to hers. SMH. I believe that will is fake and Darla is responsible for it. I understand that people make mistakes in life, but she's still very deceptive and strange if you ask me. I would love to see them win because they deserve it and for the sake of their child, but sometimes no matter how much you try to do what's in the best interest of your children and their well-being it can't and it won't work because it's not supposed to. Sometimes you are not good together though you are amazing parents.
Aunt Vi....Does she have arthritis or cancer? Hair loss is indicative of cancer, in most cases. I pray that whatever she's battling that she doesn't push Hollywood away.
I also adored the scene where Nova shed light on how sometimes people can be persuaded negatively about a person based upon someone whose opinion we hold in high regard.
Being a Louisiana woman, the cinematography, the music, and the rich culture is captivating. I adore Queen Sugar because it depicts many of the issues Blacks (both rich and poor) face in the deep South. Kudos to Oprah, Ava DuVernay, the wonderful actors and actresses, and the entire crew/team who work so hard to empower, entertain, educate, and inspire us......
