Autumn Gold Nita Engle (1925-2019) Watercolor, 1985

This painting was quite a challenge for a purist watercolor artist, meaning an artist using only transparent colors, no opaques. It is an attempt to render the blazing colors of the north woods in the fall with paints that are essentially tints diluted by water. This time of year always seems more suited to strokes of rich oil paint, splashes of flaming reds and oranges, heavy impasto, paint-knife work! In a watercolor painting, this brilliance is created by an intensive use of contrast and value—bright leaves surrounded by dark areas—the stronger the darks, the brighter the colors. . . achieve an extreme contrast and the colors begin to glow. At that moment, I think of the painting as beginning to live on its own; an exciting moment in the process of trying to create a good piece of work. - N. Engle
