the sp***ider*verse vulture article is so aauuffhfhfj im glad it exists but the road we continue to walk over and over is everyone in the industry knows how shitty it is to work on big brand/name productions from word of mouth info that gets spread by the people who worked on them. but then they can’t speak out about it because you won’t get hired again if you complain about poor leadership publicly. and then when the project is released and everyone loves it they go online praising the very leadership that was creating horrible work environments for the people who actually did the legwork. so it has to be revealed in an expose article months later by anonymous workers. and then suddenly every joe shmoe is an expert on a. how a production should be run and b. defending the leadership they think was essential to creating the product they love as a consumer. i can promise you that movie was not good because of them it was more likely in spite of them

is it really "lacking critical thinking skills" if you are critical of a piece of media that parodies a textually racist and anti-semitic, meta-textually transphobic and transmisogynist work of fiction, on the grounds that while it engages earnestly with the racism problem, it—so far—has failed to engage in any way with the anti-semitism, and while it engages with some of the transphobia, it—as of writing this post—hasn't addressed the transmisogyny problem at all, which, knowing that transmisogyny is the bread and butter of the said book series' autuer, might point out a problem with the said parody. all of the "if you don't like the premise don't watch the show" posts are so frustrating, because it's not that i particularly dislike the premise; it's the fact that the premise has been executed clumsily. i'm not saying any of this to insult anyone or anything. but by god, some people's insistence that anyone criticizing mismag ought to be lying about having watched it or ought to be dumb as a bag of bricks is in such bad faith. i personally love d20; i love aabria, i love brennan, i love the entire cast of mismag—i think they have great chemistry together. i don't think any of the cast & crew of d20 or dropout are consciously transmisogynists; however, i think that perhaps they—and half the people in this godforsaken debate—don't really know about transmisogyny as a separate thing from transphobia. if seeing (honestly mild) criticism of a thing you like makes you feel this personally hurt and angry i suggest you examine why that might be.

i'm still sort of shook by reading my old livejournal entries.
i think because it was my first experiment with "public writing," the voice is so performative and disjointed, so disturbingly not my own... like, of course it's not connected at all to who i am today (a person who has been through several changes, transformations, portals to hell and back, etc), but it's also not connected to the reality that i was living in at the time. it doesn't sound like "me," as i understand myself; it doesn't even sound like an "alternate me," or a "younger me," it's just... regurgitated jokes, layers of cheerful lies.
of course, i was not really living in reality; i had a rich fantasy life and navigated the world in a cloud.
--
honestly, i feel like i haven't even lived in reality until somewhat recently. like i just woke up from a very long dream and i'm suddenly living on earth in this body and i'm connected to it, and my place in the world. it's strange. i'm still getting used to it.
it feels better, though. reality. compared to "the comedian," "the actor," "the autuer," "the poet," etc, all the bullshit i invented in my head to protect myself over the years. i'm suddenly very grounded.
but who knows -- maybe i'll find my tumblr posts several years down the line, and still smack my head, saying "wow, i thought i had it all figured out at that point, didn't i? but of course there were still more layers of delusions to unpeel"

I thimk megalopolis was one of the most shitass movies ive ever seen but im glad i saw it in theatres and am gonna see it again with my sister thursday like the best way to describe it would be that it feels like a bad adapatation of a book that doesnt exist there was so much straight up stupid moments in it it felt like unreal spoilers if any1 even gives a shit
Theres this scene where adam drivers gets shot but his face heals with the power of the megalon and he has his face in wraps and when he takes his wraps off and reveals his healing face it plays THE most generic indian and tabla musical cue that in no way matches with the rest of the soundtrack and puts this fucking snapchat ass filter where theres like doubles of him behind him to his left and right infinitely going abd i was like is this fuckinh chowder or some shit. Ill never say the movie was good tho cause theres something i see no one talking abt atleast on letterboxd presumably cause they love deepthroating autuer dick so much even (or especially) when they kno the auteur in question is a creep but there was this weird subplot where there was this pop star with a like "virgin teen" image and they leaked a sex tape of her and the main character so the main character was arrested for being a pedophile but then it was immediately after revealed that the tape was faked (?) (They never say how they just say it was faked) and that the pop star was actually not from america abd was in her 20s. This whole subplot is obv coppola trying to exonerate all his sex offender best friends and its such a gross kneejerk response like why say the tape was fake but then also say oh shes a bad person dishonest liar too lol. Then when its showing news reports of it it cuts to her lile having changed her image to a like pop punk image and making more sexually suggestive music instead of conservative clean music like b4 so its supposed to be like she just moved onto the next image unfazed cause shes a liar its such a cringe subplot and it happens in the span of like 15 mins and is never mentioned again and very clearly is just supposed to be a rebuttal to accusations and scandals sooo fkn embarrassing especially given the fact hes been trying to get this movie made his whole life LOL the two (yes 2) other women in the movie are also treated super sexistly like the main characters love interest has no personality aside from always standing behind her mans artistic vision and passion and "completing" him then the aubrey plaza character is just supposed to be the sexy woman who sleeps with any1 for power like coppola def most sexist guy alive ever the fact he made that movie dedicated it to his wife at the end yup this man is going to hell. Probably the hardest movie to talk abt cause its not u kno deserving of praise the only frame of reference is camp rly like in that same ballpark not so bad its good but just a very wtf type of movie. Im also scared cause shia labeouf was in this doing a type of scary dennis hopper character (coppola even saying working with him reminded him of hopper) and obv this film flopped and is not gonna make any1 famous since even the acting was p bad from every1 or just v disconnected and unrelatable on a human level but watching this has me worried that labeouf is gonna thrive with piece of shit directors by using the dennis hopper/klaus kinski method of having ppl praise ur "energy" when its just that u only take roles where u play sadistic fucks cause ur a sadistic abusive fuck so ppl get convinced ur a great actor when ur not even acting.

Oh yeah totally like the way I heard it was for MI3 and due to the MANY starts and restarts of the production (like, you'd think MI3 was made by Bioware it had so many restarts) that TC and Wagner DID initially have people on contract to return, but after a while it was kind of unfair to string them along when they didn't even have a script, and that lead to the New Team in MI3.
I also beeeeelieve that McQ wanted to bring back Maggie Q and others for short appearances in.... RN? FO? one or the other, but due to the way this fucking batshit auteur duo make movies, it was again a matter of
Iirc McQ said it was like "you don't want to film a bunch of stuff with people you work with and respect only for their parts to be cut much much later, it's just not cool" and that's one reason why he sticks to a core team
Except Sean Harris bc that shit was HILARIOUS, I told this story in the Fallout commentary Punct and I did, but Alec Baldwin returned on the condition that he got to die saving Ethan and the team, we which TC and McQ were like "sure"
Fucking Sean "make sure you kill me off in RN" Harris found out, called McQ, and was like "you MOTHERFUCKER"
I love it. Hilarious. Thinking of how McQ and TC make movies really recontextualizes the fraught concept of autuer theory and gives me agida to think about BUT
It's also v entertaining.

FUCK its the end of January - Diary of a Big Ole Gay 1/31/2023
Hey whores, its me your bitch back on his bullshit.
So I have a interview tomorrow and I'm waiting to hear back from like three, four different places. so its a lot of waiting.
Tumblr media
(yeah I kinda hate having to sit on my ass and waiting)
Also I probably didn't watch that much queer stuff this week so sorry? I mean I had to slow down a little whores. most of this stuff is stuck behind a paywall. (pssst I have a ko-fi if you wanna help a whore out).
Tumblr media
The Legend of Lylah Clare (1968) dir. Robert Aldrich
So this is one of those movies that had a queer element and then were also just very poorly recieved for completly unrelated reasons, (think Sylvia Scarlett or Glen or Glenda). This film is about 80% less gay then that. On one hand you have this very meta type of patisches to it its a lot of elements from things like Rebecca and Sunset Boulivard.
You basically have this young actress who has this preternaturally ability to imitate Lylah Clare a golden age star who died in a spectacular fasion and she bascially falls into the wild child/Bisexual Vamp role. If you remember me discussing Lola from Pandoras Box then you have a sense of what I'm talking about.
TBH it is very campy and fun but the reason why this is on the list is that one of the characters is a lesbian and she was fucking Lola Rebecca, *checks notes*, sorry Lylah Clare.
Tumblr media
Muchachas de Uniforme (1951) dir. Alfredo B. Crevenna
so this is a mexican remake of the classic and while there are some aspects I really like about it (the expressionist type architecture, the costume design), it tones down a lot of the queerness of the original.
I will say that this
1. is a lot darker and if you know how the original ends then know that they go for the bummer ending. (bury your gays)
2. I watched this on youtube and there were no English Subs so I had to use the auto-translate function which meant I only got the barest bones concept of the dialogue. its buggy, spanish is a fast spoken language and also if I understood spanish the dialogue would probably be really pretty. So understand there is a language barrier for me here.
Lo siento, me esponal no es bueno, estudiar para tres anos perro soy es estudiente malo. Sue me.
Tumblr media
Madchen in Uniform (1958) dir. Géza von Radványi
This one is a lot more faithful to the original but they also butcher the bedroom kiss scene. However they do make that up with this kiss later on when they extend the play plot point.
I will say that I do like aspects of this film, i like there take on it but the original madchen in uniform is far superior to both of the remakes.
and thats not to say that the remakes are bad films they have a great aestetic, they add little details the original does but its something about the original that just sings in a way these ones dont
Tumblr media
Everything Else I watched this week and a half
as you can tell I watched Infinity Pool, It was great. Horror Autuers are like lets shit on rich people and I'm all for it. Its giving sci-fi taking to its psycological horror extremes and what happens when you give in negative nihilism.
Also watched 2017 B&B, its a gay thriller and its pretty good if a bit triggering.
I finished the rest of the Hammer House of Horror and umm what else...
Tumblr media
So I watched Bi-coastal, one of the Catalina Bisexual Features they did in the 70s directed by Tom DeSimone, (or as he went by then Lance Brookes). The men in it are definetly hollywood twink and not the sexy Gage Men, but despite that Bi-Coastal was V V hot. and honestly very bi positive for the time.

Its weird to me eno is seen as a more serious autuer type artist than the heads cause i love eno but i think the heads were better at just reaching a artistic compromise in approiated rhythms n sounds etc. Like eno to me has always felt like some1 whos popularized or classified pre existing ideas than invent them outright. Im saying this btw too as some1 who like listens to more eno than i do talking heads btw. Like i think eno has trouble grasping where the experiment stops and the pop starts and u kno never was a big bug famous act of the 70s cause of it whike heads happily embraces both and just as a group are so strong that they arent one of the groups that went unappreciated during their heyday .

Week 7
Near Dark at first reminded me of Twilight. This idea of new found family and being turned into a vampire by a lover. One can make the arguement that this film has no substance. However, as always, we need to pay attention to detail. Bigelow was a MFA painter, constantly paying attention to little details. I definitely could see that during the scene where Caleb and Mae are by the oil rigs. We see the oil rigs pumping up and down, just as Caleb is drinking blood from Mae. To me there's two contexts, a sexual one, and the idea of blood pumping from Mae to Caleb. The film even still follows the set up of women as the predator, they are first seen as prey. With Mae being a vampire/ predator, she kind of seen as prey when Caleb forces himself onto her. He at first is pressuing her to kiss him, until she eventually does turn him into the vampire he is. It connects me to my next point, consent. Throughout the film there is a lack of consent. In the beginning, Caleb doesn't get Mae's full consent for him to kiss her. Then Mae does not get consent from Caleb to turn him into a vampire. With Mae's family, the entire time they are killing and turning others into Vampires, feeds into the idea of lack of consent. It is especially apparent when Homer chooses Sarah, Caleb's sister, as his mate (obviously without her consent). This places a lot into the objectification of women throughtout the film. Ironically enough, even though the women are seen as objects throughout the film, not all act like damsels and are very opinionated. Mae and Diamondback are able to kill to satisfy their thirst for blood; Sarah was determined to find her brother. Another huge detail to point out is the time period of when this film was made. This film was made during the time where there was a lot of American horror films that showcases danger in the quiet, rural areas/ towns. It makes a comment on class. The vampire throughout the film target farmers (Caleb), truck drivers, women, people of color, etc. It's like giving making a comment on how those out in those rural areas aren't as bright and are "lower" class, which is why there are so many dangerous crimes being committed out there. In my eyes, the film presents the idea that there is anarchy out there in the more rural areas, because they are not of "high" class. Therefore, they do not have the "intelligence" or "manners" to be civilized.
Interestingly enough, how Bigelow breaks through the glass ceiling is often at the expense of the womanhood and feminity. As Near Dark being a horror/ action film, Bigelow was able to make a name out of herself in a genre that is male-dominated and in an industry that is male-dominated as well. This is especially shocking as the genres she took part in are genres that men explore their masculinity in (to the MAX). However we need to look at how she did it. Deborah Jermyn makes a point in the reading, Bigelow can be considered an autuer who makes quality movies. The point that is made, however, is she can be due to the way she presents herself and women in the films she makes. Bigelow strived to look confident, but by doing so she lacked interest in her looks and dressed down. In order to make it in what she was doing, she wanted to look comanding. By doing so, she had to embrace masculinity and move away from femininity. I feel like I can see that with the character Mae in Near Dark. Mae isn't dressed like your sterotypical "girl." Her hair is short, almost like how a boys would be. She wears jeans with a shirt that is cut off on the shoulders. This idea of having women and female characters distancing themselves from womanhood and femininity, can be seen with Mae's outfit alone. She is considered a hunter and fully capable of killing and is accepted by her family, I don't think that would be the case if she were to wear a dress or having long hair. One can make a comment about Diamondback. She inherently is the mother of the pack, yet her being "motherly" is very subtle. When it becomes more apparent in the end in the chase to get Caleb, Sarah, and Mae, she evidently dies. With the women often lacking in development or emphasis on their own wants and personalities, the men's journeys are highlighted. Throughout the film, Caleb has to find out what man he wants to become ( a vampire or a stay a human man). A jab can be made with Bigelow on this idea. Bigelow makes it into Hollywood and in a genre that is lacking in women, but makes a coming-of-age story of a man. She in turn, perpeutates the male gaze.

Hollywood is really trying to pull a fast one. Regular films are now being labelled 'Autuer' or 'Independent'because the main film company making them is technically small. But when you're backed by billionaires and big banks, with distribution tied to equally big companies with an international footprint almost immediately, that's not Independent. It feels like Hollywood making excuses for why films they want to make are not popular, so they're labelled 'Artistic', with the general public treated like imbeciles if they just happen to not warm up to a project. Then it gets pushed for awards.
