Automagik - Fluorescent Nights ⁠ ⁠ @automagik #automagik @soulsteprecords #soulsteprecords #funk #dance ⁠ ⁠ Now that i'm back in the game and have a new set of working NOS Mullard 807s in my amp, I'm BACK ON IT and catching up on some amazing new records including this super green copy of Automagik's new LP, "Fluorescent Nights". It's billed as "music to get your freak on" and the hype sticker warned me to expect early Prince with a touch of MGMT (and honestly, they're right on the money). I'll take it a step further and say that Automagik's polished and playful funk is also not unlike Chromeo at their least ironic and it's just as fun and dancey as anything MGMT did before they did so much acid that they forgot how to dance. I've heard at least one other Automagik album before it and it was a fun ride, but this one seems like we're hearing from a band who has further gelled and found their collective groove and the songwriting chops really shine through on the whole album. There aren't a lot of folks making lighthearted and breezy music right now and it's a shame because of how amazing music can be as an escape from stress, depression, anxiety, and all of the other crappy parts of human life. If you drop the needle on this one when you're in a bad mood, you'll probably feel it all melt away and if anything, it's going to make you pine for the days where you could spend the night in a cramped disco with a million close friends, a room full of warm air, and the best refreshments and vices your paycheck could buy. Automagik - Goldmine @automagik @soulsteprecords #automagik #soulstep #soulsteprecords Well, I guess I won’t be able to run a paid ad for this album as it starts with “I wanna shake my motherfuckin’ ass to the beat of the drums and the bass” and frankly I cannot review this album without saying that for myself. Instagram and Facebook’s morality police have shut me down for way less and I live for sharing records with you. But you know what? Screw em. I’m feeling a weird funky energy flowing through me now that I’m drinking my coffee and listening to Automagik’s SUPREMELY funky and playfully crass Goldmine on Soul Step Records. Automagik bills themselves as “funky indie pop rock n roll” and that’s right on the money. It’s the funkiness of @chromeo, the danciness of @chkchkchk_og, the preciousness of @whoismgmt before they started taking themselves WAY too seriously, and the goofiness of @beck at the height of his Midnight Vultures era. It’s upbeat, it’s fun, and it’s got enough perfectly placed F-words to make you laugh while you’re dancing your ass off. Something tells me that this band has an equally intense live set, so if any of y'all are in the Cincinnati area and can confirm or deny that, I’d love to know. Do any of you remember The Dan Band and their ability to add bad words into almost every line of famous songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart? This is like a classier and original version of that. I don’t really have a rating scale here at VINYLEXAMS but I can definitely assert that if you’re into 1) dancing, 2) catchy as hell vocals, 3) tongue-in-cheek middle fingers to mainstream expectations, you will absolutely enjoy this album. I didn’t realize that the one thing I was really missing this morning was a dose of slickly produced dance pop but here we are.
