i was hoping you could help explain something about the spoon theory. i understand what it means and all, but i'm a little confused as to who it applies to. sometimes when i can barely force myself to move i find myself thinking "oh im out of spoons" but i dont know if i am allowed to say that? i read that its for people with chronic physical/mental illnesses but theres a lot of mental illnesses that are chronic but dont affect energy, so how do you know? (sorry if this is badly worded)
other mods can answer this too (maybe help with wording, since autisticbrain is very wordy today!) but i wanted to throw in my two cents:
i’m v. big into universal design, curb-cutting, etc. basically, the idea that disability-related language should apply to whoever finds use for it, and that helps everyone in society. so i tend to just go with very expansive terms, and follow from there.
if you think being out of spoons is an accurate descriptor for how you’re feeling, that’s what it’s there for as far as i’m concerned? if you’re worried about stepping on toes, sometimes i avoid the spoons analogy and talk about my mental battery running low.
as long as you respect the term and the diversity of people who use it (since it did come from christine miserandino, who has lupus, a chronic physical illness), there shouldn’t be an issue.

"If you've told a child a thousand times, and the child still has not learned, then it is not the child who is the slow learner." - Walter Barbe 1977
When there's an underlying condition that has not been identified and needs are therefore unmet, you can tell a child the same thing a million times and their behavior won't change.
What WILL change their behavior is understanding the root cause and figuring out strategies that will address their underlying unmet needs... then, helping them apply those strategies.
But getting upset because they "aren't listening" is unproductive and will likely lead to increased frustration all around.
Also, as they say... insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
