okay okay okay it's time for the work in progress comprehensive autism special interest list and the ages at which they happened. very much for my own records but like, feel free to read and be like "wtf" if you want. tldr how did nobody pick up the autism
memorised all metric prefixes for every scale of measurement up to / down to yocto and yotta when I was 9 (new prefixes were defined in 2022 yay they are ronna, quetta, ronto, quecto for 10e27, 10e30, 10e-27, 10e-30)
related to above: spent all my free time in year 4 looking at scale of the universe 2
spent all of high school telling everybody about how the time derivatives of position could be extended indefinitely and some of them have cool / stupid names like snap crackle and pop (which I also had memorised in order)
watched every vsauce video before bed every night for like 4 years straight, I must have seen each video at least 150 times by now
related to above: could recite vsauce video scripts and knew exactly what music was playing in the background at any given time in one of his videos
related to above above: made myself cry thinking about Big Theta ™️ in his video on infinity because I was like holy shit inaccessible cardinals are so cool (I still cry every time)
decided I wanted to try an astrophysics project in year 6 because the class projects were too boring, and dedicated a weekend to learning all the required trigonometry (that is, the entire high school trig curriculum)
tried (and failed) to solve navier stokes in year 5, turns out you probably need calculus for that
parents took me (toddler) to an observatory and insisted on paying full price for my ticket because they knew I would ask an absurd amount of questions
decided (as a toddler) I needed to become an astronaut so I could kick pluto back into the solar system

i love showing my friends and family my special interests or hyperfixations and i know they're not going to be as insane about smth as i am bc autism™ but it's always so jarring to me bc how is one simply a CASUAL enjoyer of smth? i either go feral if i love smth or if i'm really not into smth i'm often neutral abt it/don't care at all 😭 how does one not let a piece of media completely take over their life? what's that like???

as an autistic person i’m realizing a lot of my love for scott pilgrim is that it is literally an ordered list. there are 7 evil exes. the 7 evil exes are fought in order. my autistic brain loves lists.

Special interest
So, many autistics have a special interest which is a deep interest in particular topics. It can be anything, music, science, books and many other things. There is a stereotype about trains but I also feel like many TV series fall into the stereotype of choosing a specific animal as a special interest.
Here are few examples:
Sam Gardener (Atypical)-penguins Woo Young-woo (Extraordinary Attorney Woo)-whales Nicholas Moss (Everything's Gonna Be Okay)-bugs Addie Darrow (A Kind Of Spark)-sharks
I kinda get the feeling it's just the easiest subject to choose as a special interest and I know the last two were written by autistics but it's still feel too simple sometimes. Animals are a great subject but I know a lot of autistics and they may like weird and special animals but that's not their special interest.
These are the examples I had in mind feel free to add more in the comments or reblogs if you have more and let me know if you want a general post on special interests of autistic characters that is not only about animals.

List of Non-fiction Books on Autism
[Please note: I am only listing the books I have read on this list. This is not meant to be a comprehensive or complete list at all. I want to share the books that have been helpful to me so far. *Updated 09/17/23]
Approaching Autistic Adulthood: The Road Less Travelled by Grace Liu
| This book has a lot of advice about navigating adulthood as an autistic person. I found the advice on dealing with burnout especially helpful!
The Autism Friendly Cook Book by Lydia Wilkins
| This is one of my favorite books! If you're like me, and you really struggle with all things kitchen and cooking, this is a really helpful resource. Not only does it have a useful section that details techniques and supplies that you may need, but the recipes have an estimated energy and skill level! This book has helped me approach cooking more prepared, which helps me with coping with anxiety and preventing meltdowns.
Connecting with the Autism Spectrum: How to Talk, how to Listen, and Why you Shouldn't Call it High-Functioning by Casey "Remrov" Vormer
| This book is one of the most accessible books I've read so far. The language is both concise and easier to follow than most. It is less general than some other books on this list, so if you don't relate to it immediately or at all, that doesn't make you more or less autistic. Your experience (including location, assigned gender, gender identity, sexuality, co-occuring conditions, etc.) influence the way you exist as an autistic person.
Living with PTSD on the Autism Spectrum: Insightful Analysis with Practical Applications by Lisa Morgan, M.ED. and Mary P. Donahue, PH.D.
| If you're struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and are on the Autism spectrum, this book could be really helpful! It provides research in plain language and offers helpful examples of how PTSD and ASD can interact. It also shares insight on how to recognize abuse and trauma, as well as how to advocate/seek advocacy for yourself or loved ones with ASD. I think the personal examples are really helpful, but I do want to caution that these also make it another very specific reading experience. If you read it, and do not see your experience represented, that is not your fault!
Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity by Steve Silberman
| Written by a journalist, this book packs a lot of information! It focuses on the history of Autism as a diagnoses, and for that reasons can be overwhelming and heartbreaking at times. The author is (I think) overly sympathetic to H*ns Asp*rger's contribution to Autism research; but from what I understand, the book was written at a time before the extent of his involvement with the N*zi party was understood, so maybe a future addition will reflect what we know now much better. I'm grateful that I read it, because it put my own late diagnosis into a perspective that gives me a little bit more peace.
The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida
| This book is excellent to read for both autistic people and people who have an autistic loved one since it is focused on answering questions about how some autistic people think and behave (like stimming.) The author is an autistic boy who uses communication aids to express himself, and he has many insights into what it's like to have specific support needs and how it can be challenging to get those needs met.
Sensory: Life on the Spectrum organized and edited by Schnumm
| This is an anthology of comics by autistic creators who use visual story-telling to talk about their experiences. It was so nice to see my experiences in their stories, and to see other's experiences that I can't relate to as well!
Sincerely, Your Autistic Child: What People on the Autism Spectrum Wish Their Parents Knew About Growing Up, Acceptance, and Identity edited by Emily Page Ballou, Sharon daVanport, and Morénike Giwa Onaiwu
| This collection of essays/letters is wonderful, especially if you wish to learn more about the experiences of a diverse group of autistic people. It highlights that there are as many ways to be autistic as there are autistic people in the world (something that many of the books on this list say.)
Spectrums: Autistic Trans People in Their Own Words edited by Maxfield Sparrow
| "friend of mine, i am here, too. i am flapping and humming and feeling and being. i am learning who i am, i am being who i am, i am being loud and bright and joyful and true! and they are afraid, and they do not understand, but i am not for them, and friend of mine, neither are you" (from "a letter to a friend" by ren koloni).
This collection is so, so important to me as a genderqueer autist. The above quote is from my favorite contribution in the book, and I'm so grateful to the author for their words.
Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity by Dr. Devon Price
| This was the first book I read when I learned that I'm autistic. It is informative and compassionate. I think it is on the lower end of accessibility on the list so far, but it still does a wonderful job of explaining some of the difficult concepts. I think Dr. Price's explanation of the difference between bottom-up and top-down thinking is the best I've read so far, which was especially difficult for me to wrap my head around as a literal thinker. Just remember that if you pick up a book and it's difficult to understand, you're allowed to ask for help, take time to away from it, or put it down for good.
-
That's the list so far! I'm constantly searching for more books to read, so if you have recommendations, please let me know!

Look I'm not going to say getting a 153 on the RAADS R didn't make me think I had autism but the fact that I have multiple spreadsheets/databases that I updated for my special interest and refer back to multiple times a day should have been a major clue.
My most extensive ones are for my yearly reading goals (which I was super ahead in before my focus shifted like ahead enough that even though I haven't read a book in 3 months I'm still 10 books ahead of my goal) and fanfiction but specifically 9-1-1 fanfiction of which I've read 17 million words of in the last 3ish months alone and am apparently keeping up to date with 38 WIPs which I have literally never done so I think my database is working.

Things that I did/do probably because autism
-Braking down and crying in the first few weeks of schooling
-Not wanting to go to school, not wanting to talk after hard school days, wishing I could just teleport away sometimes
-Struggling to learn math in primary, but doing better with the different teaching methods in high school
-Sitting in the same spot on the school bus
-Having few friends in school
-Being stubborn, sympathy lacking, and very black and white
-Specific environments don’t exhaust me, and when I have to leave them I don’t wanna leave
-Getting bored easily
-Clicking/biting things/drawing a figure 8 with my pointer finger when exited/stressed/randomly, hand gesturing a LOT,
-Narrating what I’m doing, saying things like “Ruh”, randomly making guttural noises
-Tiptoeing, hopping around like a frog, “velocipatoring” down the hallway
-The urge to bite people (this is affection), strong emotions often end up with me feeling some type of angry, laughing when I’m angry and sad
-Pausing between words, not making eye contact/stering into your sole and judging you on the moral plain, not getting sarcasm, thinking REALLY hard about how to interact in specific situations, stuttering when saying lots, talking to slow/fast, changing the tone I speak in
-I cannot the texture of peas
-Being “not hungry enough” to eat yet
-Being obsessed with birds until I was 11, then became interested in the military but didn’t share that interest with anyone because I was scared of being judged
-Very quickly learning things relating to my interests
-Getting confused when people over explained things, needing structure and direction, hating sudden routine changes, wearing the same things/having clothes that are very simlar
-Worrying about very specific details of things, and being impatient because I’m stressed.
-Felling like I wasn’t my self, and that my real self didn’t fit in, trying to fit in.
-I can magically recognise patterns for some reason
-Self doubt and second guessing my self
-Taking forever to get my Ps. (I keep forgetting/avoiding to drive and I haven't got enough hours)
-Feeling weird because I finished school and that’s a major change to my routine and life.
