He is pissed when you ask for someone else’s help instead of his

That being said, he hates asking for help

As much as possible, he will do his best to make your life easier with small gestures like : 

Picking you up at the airport // Driving you to and from work if he can 

Having your favorite food delivered to you when he is not there and he knows you are too lazy/tired/sick to cook 

Taking care of you when you are sick, tired or simply having a bad day 

Making sure his pantry is stocked with your favorite drinks and beverages 

He enjoys helping you when you are cooking/cleaning… 

Once he is comfortable around your place he will even do it unprompted 

Gifts

Might be his least favorite love language 

He enjoys giving gifts far more than he likes receiving them 

He is very hard to shop for anyway 

What do you get for a man who has the means to get everything he wants for himself ?

He is grateful for gifts but he is not really the materialistic type 

He low-key doesn’t believe he deserves gifts anyway 

When he gives you a gift, you can expect it to be meaningful and thoughtful

He pays a lot of attention to details

Big, expensive gifts are for special occasions

Just because he has the means doesn’t mean he will gift you a Chanel bag on a random Thursday. Sorry. 

When he splurges, he doesn’t half-ass it but it doesn’t happen too often either 

Before he buys you something expensive, you have to be together for a while

Trying to win a woman over by spending money on her ? Yeah, not for him. He is too scared of gold-diggers. 

Also, if you have a fight, he might try to suck up to you with a gift or a bouquet even though he is the first to criticize how shallow gifts can be 

When he is away and doesn’t see you for a while, he might arrange for a surprise delivery, to make you smile and also make sure you don’t forget about him (as if it were possible)

Physical touch 

He is a bit guarded at first, so much so that you start doubting that he actually likes you (« Surely, he would have made a move by now… » - nope that man is just slow)

If he actually likes you, he makes it a point to behave like a gentleman and he will try and pick the best time for a first kiss or even simply holding your hand for the first time 

Great kisser. 

Not a big fan of public displays of affection (for obvious reasons)

If the two of you are ever spotted together, people might mistake you for a member of his team because he will not even get caught holding your hand 

That’s partly because he values your privacy at least as much as his - he doesn’t want his girl to get harassed or bothered 

However, when it’s just the two of you, he is all over you 

Whenever the two of you spend time together, he enjoys having physical contact with you, even if it’s just holding your hand while watching a movie 

Definitely makes up for his busy schedule with physical touch. 

Quality time

Probably his love language of choice 

Overall, he is really mindful of your schedule and appreciates that you respect his 

If you don’t, it’s not going to work between the two of you anyway 

Most of the time, he is punctual and he will not show up late to one of your dates 

If it happens, he will profusely apologize and make it up to you 

Might get a little pissed if you do (but he knows that girls will be girls and you are most likely late because you wanted to be extra pretty for him) 

He has a hectic schedule but he if he loves you he will make time for you 

Him making time for you is actually one of the telltale signs he actually cares about you 

If you are as busy as him, he really appreciates that you manage to make time for him

No phones rule during your dates 

Like, seriously, it’s a huge red flag for him if his date spends too much time on her phone instead of enjoying the moment 

Speaking of phones… He doesn’t text you too much. Instead, he tries to find moments when he can call you and have an actual conversation. 

When you are talking, you have his full attention 

He pays attention to everything you say and and do, even when it doesn’t seem like it 

He remembers everything 

He enjoys hearing you talk about things you are passionate about

If it’s something he is not too familiar with, he asks questions and he might even make an effort to do some research of his own, just so he can keep up with you 

And in turn, he really appreciates if you do the same 

Doesn’t seem like it at first, but he actually enjoys a good conversation. Even if you’re gorgeous, if you’re not interesting… Hard pass. 

He also gets really talkative if he’s talking about a topic he is passionate about. Like hip-hop culture, pop culture, sports… He will talk your ears off. And he likes talking about it with you. 

Even better if you are able to have an actual debate with him. He might not agree with you but he respects someone who can stand their ground and have actual valid arguments. 

Because you might not be able to spend too much time together sometimes, he will do his best to make your dates special 

As your relationship evolves, he includes you in some more mundane activities, just to enjoy more of your company 

Don’t expect to spend too much time at the studio with him. He keeps his work and personal life separate. 

That being said, he might invite you to spend time with him there once or twice. And it means a lot. 

Words of affirmations 

We all know this man has a way with words 

When he praises you or compliments you, he means it 

A perk of dating a dictionary nerd : he chooses his words carefully 

Never a dull compliment 

He is a great motivator : when he encourages you and tells you you can do it, you actually start believing that you can 

He is good when It comes to giving words of affirmation but receiving them ? Nope. 

When you compliment him, he gets a bit awkward and doesn’t know how to react 

That being said, he enjoys it 

Compliments he enjoys the most are not necessarily the ones about his professional skills or physical appearance but genuinely about his character 

Any fan could tell him he is a great rapper or that he looks good. But having his girl tell him what an amazing person she thinks he is and being specific about it ? YES. 

Basically, just show him that you care about him (the real him) 

With how guarded he is, it might be some time before he actually says « I love you »

It might not come with a big declaration either. Just « I love you ». Simple. 

Definitely catches you off guard the first time he says it, with a super casual tone. 

However, when he says it, he means it

Sure!

I think everyone who's ever made art has hit points where it's hard to go on making art or where a particular project isn't moving. So from that perspective, sure, a version of it is real...

But there's a particular version of it that's what a lot of people mean where you're A Writer™ and then the magic inspiration gnomes come and steal your inspiration juice. This is mostly nonsense, and quite a few author types who've actually finished long projects will tell you so.

When you sit down to a blank page and it stubbornly stays blank like your head, that's a symptom of something... and the something in question is often either depression and overwhelmed feelings that are taking over your whole life or an entirely correct instinct that your project is flawed and the next step is not writing that next scene.

Many people try to be pantsers instead of planners, get maybe a quarter into a project, and then choke. It's because they started with the kind of concept that requires planning, but they haven't planned. If your plot revolves around the characters eventually learning the meaning of life, you'd damn well better start with what you, the author, think that meaning is and work backwards. Same if your characters are solving a twisty mystery or complicated thriller conspiracy: you will not come up with a genius idea that ties everything together just by writing by the seat of your pants. If you don't go in with the ending in mind and some waypoints to write towards, you're going to choke. This is exceptionally common in grandiose fic concepts that are like "What if this true blue hero were a viiiiillain, oooooh!" where it's neat, but 99% of the point is showing us the work of getting from A to B. People write the prologue showing us the big concept and then flash back to how it all started... and then stop.

I see it a lot in projects that start with a character sheet for RP. Yeah, for RP itself, noodling along and figuring out what X would do in situation Y is great fun... but for many longfic/novel plot types, you will not arrive at a workable plot this way. You'll end up with a mess that can, at best, be used as brainstorming and completely rewritten from the ground up, using only key cool images or character observations. There are authors that start from individual characters and then see where they go. In my experience, they don't tend to be working in the genres that fic fandom types tend to want to work in. It's also something that often takes a lot more experience and skill than starting with a basic plot outline, and inexperienced writers often overreach.

It's not writer's block. It's a project that needs to be taken out back like Old Yeller.

Even the salvageable projects that are making you pause usually have some other issue like you not being clear on the central emotional themes even if you've outlined some factual plot. Or you've demanded that your characters do a particular thing for plot convenience, but you know deep down that it doesn't ring true. You can't write the next scene because there is no next scene. You need to rework the forced part till the rest can make sense.

And even more common than any of the above is people thinking that just because Danielle Steel sits down every morning and writes for eight hours, that means they can and should with no warm up or experience. Trying to force yourself to be a type of writer you're not—majorly overdoing it on any work, in fact—just leads to burnout and inability to function.

Unexpected OTP Pairings ✨

❥ Okay I know Valentine’s Day was last week! Almost two weeks ago! But recently I’ve been wanting to branch out a bit with my blog writing, & writing prompts are something I love a lot! So, I’m trying something new & came up with a few OTP ideas! I hope you enjoy, thank you & have fun!

Former! Villain x Superhero

Not even a real villain, just some dumb person who steals things or who makes evil schemes that always fail. Kind of like Dr. Doofenshmirtz, & they’re actually really nice in real life! But when a superhero comes to stop them, they instantly fall in love! Seriously has heart eyes & doesn't pay any attention to the hero’s grand pre-fight speech.

Or doesn’t put up a fight at all, just hands them the stolen goods & escapes. Leaving Hero completely confused as the Villain they were supposed to stop didn’t even bother fighting, which is still good but they’re still confused.

After this, the Villain now decides to become a Superhero!! To not only impress their new crush but also because they've always really wanted to be one anyways! It was just the push they needed.

Cue them now running the streets in a completely different outfit trying their best to stop the bad guys! Usually, it doesn’t end well though: they’ll trip over the air & let them escape, or maybe just show up late to the fight & it’s already over.

It’s even worse when their Hero crush joins the fray, and then they’re really clumsy or just start sputtering like an old car. Their former henchmen, now turned sidekicks, try to console them as they lay on the couch completely embarrassed by their feats.

Oooooor, they are super confident & much better at being a superhero than they ever were being a Villain. Maybe this confidence goes to their head a bit & will literally try flirting with Hero on the battlefield! Hero gets a bit embarrassed sometimes & their other super-friends tease them about it. If this does happen, Hero might end up trying to run away from the former Villain in an effort to focus on their job. But it just ends up being really funny to watch.

Bonus: They have opposite powers or maybe one has no powers at all.

Dashing Thief x Friendly! Detective

I'm sorry this one is a bit short!

A notorious thief with a heart of gold who only ever steals from bad guys & acts more as a Robin Hood character than any. Hardly ever keeps anything for themselves; just struts around after dark on the lookout for anything suspicious. Not one person has been able to catch them & their identity remains a mystery. Would be cool if they were a nobleman/woman or had some kind of big fancy hideout. 

The detective is actually their friend/partner (maybe)! The good egg who actually sees the thief’s true intentions instead of just mucking around in a Halloween costume. Although they're pretty ticked at the way Thief does things, they usually keep their coworkers & the boss off Thief's trail. Maybe a newbie or an intern at the detective agency, determined to prove themselves on the field. 

Maybe they met as civilians & the thief switched to a disguise to hide from authorities, but bumped into the detective who was out on a coffee break. It was love at first sight for both of them, so cute! 😆 They do a lot of coffee dates now, but sometimes Detective overdoes it.....

One is the brains, and the other is the brawn. Together they can get any job done! The Detective’s coworkers find it strange how the Thief shows up more often when they're specifically on the job. The Boss is suspicious but sometimes finds them cute.

Often swing by each other’s places to not only hangout but help each other with cases or special kinds of info. If the Thief has any sidekicks, no doubt they’ll spill funny stories of missions gone wrong or close calls. 

Stealing each other's hats and impersonating the other one for fun, then cue a playful chase scene around the room! So cute!

Dragon x Wizard

I know some people like fantasy stuff!

A dragon is resting in their cave until they hears footsteps at the entrance. But instead of finding a grumpy old knight, they find a wizard! Maybe the Wizard was exploring the caves nearby or on a journey to the next town, but instead of feeling scared or angry, they started fangirling/fanboying over the dragon instead! 😆

Likes to ask them all sorts of questions & sometimes can’t stop talking. Now Wizard can come whenever they like & the two become friends!

The Wizard visits whenever they can, showing off all sorts of new spells or potions they've created. Even though it might not be as impressive as their fire, the Dragon still finds it cool & applauds.

The Dragon will always try to impress their wizard friend with tall tales of each piece of treasure. How they got it, where they found it, if they fought anyone over it, etc. But sometimes those stories are exaggerated…

The Wizard will be in absolute awe at the Dragon’s stories & can’t help but be a complete chatterbox about it. Asking more questions about different things like how their magic works, how they can fly with all that extra weight, or if they can learn a fire-breathing spell from them instead—

If the Wizard lives in a tower then the Dragon will visit just as frequently! Usually it’s in the early morning or during sundown when there are fewer people around. But if the Wizard lives in a town or city, it might take some time for the Dragon to come around. It’s not that they don’t care, but dragons are more solitary creatures. Either way, they enjoy each other's company & the dragon likes to ask questions about different thingamabobs on the Wizard's shelves.

They can both be pretty clingy but that’s sometimes a bit tough to handle because the poor wizard has to be extra careful, especially with pouring bottles or waving their wand around if they’re not even two feet apart. Doesn’t mind but sometimes will complain a bit if their partner won’t stay cooperate.

Extra Duo!

Since I loved the superhero one a lot I thought of another one: what if a Hero’s Sidekick & a Villain’s Henchman fall in love!

The Henchman does end up giving Sidekick any tips about their next plan. Cue the Villain throwing a tantrum in their lair wondering why the Hero is always one step ahead of them. 😅

They like to hangout in civilian settings together! Bonus if they found out their secret identities on accident lol

Extra Bonus if the Henchman or both villains become heroes at the end!

Ateez Personality Energy (September)

So, I set the intention of looking at their strongest personality traits at the moment, or the energies around them, so this doesn't tell you all about them, just an aspect as we are all complex beings. From first look, some cards make sense, while others look confusing af, let's do this!

Hongjoong (King/Temperance)-Well, this makes sense. He is the leader of the group, and he is standing in his power at the moment. He is exhibiting great leadership skills. He exudes authority and can stand his ground when need be. Although, a King can be controlling and a bit of a dictator, with the temperance card, it seems he can balance being in control, but not overdo it. Balance, peace, harmony and equilibrium are important to him. His members opinions are just as important. With these cards, it shows he is a pretty effective leader. He isn't too overpowering, but stands his ground when need be.

Seonghwa (Companion/The Magician)-He is a great friend and a loyal companion. He cares about the needs of others and tends to lean on others at the moment. This energy can be a bit clingy though. He could have a need to appease others. Also, with the magician card, it gives me he may be trying to manifest a partner in his life, or someone in his life, interesting message there. The magician can be someone who is very skilled and talented and has many resources to get what they want as well. He may have that ability as well.

Yunho (Initiator/9 of Pentacles)-His energy seems to be quite the opposite of Seonghwa. This man is independent and stands on his own. He enjoys his independence. Now the Initiator card I created in the deck is an Aries energy card for me, so it makes sense him as an Aries gets this. He is a go getter. He would be the first to step into something. He isn't afraid to take a leap into something new. He is confident in his talents, and he knows his worth. He feels very abundant and powerful. Love this energy.

Yeosang (Advocate/5 of Swords)-This one kind of confuses me, this combo is weird. Hmm, actually maybe not. It seems he fights for the causes he feels passionate about. He may get into arguments with others who do not advocate for the things he advocates for. This could lead to fights, arguments, disagreements. He definitely truly believes he is right, and others are wrong. It is like if you don't believe in what I do, get the f out, kind of mindset. Yeah, he may say some nasty stuff as well. Oh, that actually made more sense once I channeled his energy lol I mean he is a Gemini right, so this energy makes sense. They can definitely hurt with words if you trigger them.

San (Shape-Shifter/Death)- These two together makes sense. He is all about evolving and changing. San is an open-minded person, always willing to let go of his past self and move to something new. He doesn't seem to stick to old beliefs and patterns if it no longer serves him. He is adaptable and malleable. I think he is someone always open to change and evolve as a person. I love this energy too. I feel we should be this way.

Mingi (Martyr/Strength)-It seems he believes he can save the world lol I also feel, not going to lie with this strength card, he's got a strong ego. He feels he can do and take on anything. His confidence can help him leap into new things ad take chances more easily, which is good. I just feel he may need to ground himself a bit. Okay, had to check what his sign was, because I needed to make sure he was a Leo, and that makes sense. He can also be pretty stubborn and may try to appear stronger than he really is, or he tries to exude strength. Showcasing his strength is important to him. His energy is interesting and kind of funny.

Wooyoung (Thinker/Ace of Pentacles)-The thinker card did show up reversed, which means he tends to over analyze things a lot. Now with the ace of pentacles, it could do with his career or taking opportunities in life. He may be cautious about buying things, not sure why that came up, but I go with the messages I get. He is someone in his head a lot, which stops him from making a purchase, what is it about him buying something, like why does that keep popping up, so weird how channeling works sometimes, like what does he want to buy? The dude has a creative mind, and he is very imaginative, but sometimes it goes into overdrive, which halts him from taking purchases, jesus dude, just buy it!, because I keep getting a message of him not buying things wtf. Like what is he going to buy?, so weird. Moving on lol I am kind of getting a headache here, so yeah.

Jongho (Prince/9 of Wands)-Okay, this one also confused me at first look, but let's see if I get anything once I channel his energy. He has potential to be very charming and seducing, but he kind of holds back on that. He is very guarded and doesn't trust others easily. Huh, I am going back to his love reading of him having the 7 of wands, and how defensive and protective he is. He doesn't really like to let others in too easily, but once you are in, he will show you his incredible charms and open up to you. Okay, that made sense now.

Okay, interesting messages that came through, especially Wooyoung, this is an interesting bunch here. They really intrigued me with this reading.

thoughts on riven (fate)?

I hate him.

(Disclaimer, I'll be answering this with consideration for the source material, not my own headcanons about Riven)

The thing is with a different direction he might have done wellish. For the aesthetic part of it he does have that angular, somewhat foxy face that I think fits Riven well. But getting rid of his haircolor is a crime. Also his hair should be messier. I don't think his cartoon style would work in live action and I also don't think simple spikes would work, that's very hedgehog vibe and his cartoon vibe is not that. His hair should have just been dyed and made voluminous and messy or he should have gotten the appropriate wig.

Now the writing. First of all, without Brandon and Tommy the whole balance is off. Combining Riven and Brandon in a Substance like monstrosity (RIP ElisaSue) and dousing it in homophobia and making it an apprentice sex predator is not it.

But let's go bit by bit, first: the brandon/riven combo. It doesn't work. Riven and Sky were barely friends in season 1. Riven had huge beef with him and Sky gave back in kind. In Fate Riven acts like an insecure younger brother mad that Sky is better than him in a really whiny way. Riven hated that Sky is better than him (or considered better) in OG and he was ANGRY about it. He met that guy and for some reason got competitive real quick. Instead of exploring why that is, they just made them close as brothers, and then Riven has his meltdown (was it even a meltdown? The conflicts in Fate are so weak (unless, ofc, we're directing a white actress to call a black girl a rat in disgust, THAT got to be intense) like Sky bitches to him about Beatrix (my blood pressure rises just thinking about it) Riven goes "whaaah, I'm just a guy you look down on!" and then they're cool next season as if nothing happened.

Now there's also a badassery level missing. Now in the show boys very rarely get to actually be badass bc the girls outshine them, yes. However, one thing about Riven is that the motherfucker is durable. Cartoon Riven would NEVER fold just bc Flora mildly plant choked him and he would rather eat glass than run away with his tail between his legs.

Now to the homophobia/sex predator part. 1) The way he cornered Dane at first was creepy as fuck. The way Dane then reached out none the less is not that unrealistic sadly, but wasn't addressed at all. Riven's lack of boundaries itself was not only not addressed at all later on but it also disappeared. It's inconsistent writing. Now I don't mind Riven being biphobic even though he is clearly bi himself. Like sure a self hating queer isn't an original trope but meh you could shoehorn it ig (the self hate part, not the queer part, I'm not annoyed at that). BUT my problem isn't a homophobic character, it's homophobic writing. I have a separate post for that ( https://www.tumblr.com/redfountainpostin/763521760187580416/beyond-racism-one-of-my-most-hated-aspects-of?source=share) but short version is that making villains (sorry excuse for villains, what did Bea even do? BLOOM released the big bad) the sexually "lascivious" ones is TIRED and I'm TIRED of softcore preporn of characters that are 16 and 17.

THAT brings me to my next point: Riven is made to look like he's a girl crazy sex crazed teen. He's not. I know several fanfiction authors gave him and Darcy a sexual relationship that's very intense and I respect that- just like I hope to do with my own headcanons, they work off of canon, exaggate themes, push them in desired directions and they make it WORK. However none of them make sex the ONLY think Darven has and Fate makes that mistake. Canon Riven is not girl crazy and no matter the dub you never get the idea he's thirsty for Darcy. He's in LOVE. Puppy love, if you will. Could sex be added in the live action version? Sure! But OVERDO it and fail on the love part and you ruined Darven. Speaking of which, are Riven and Bea even together in season 2? I swear to God I don't remember scenes of them together?

One thing I disliked as well was how crude and vulgar he was. However, that's something that could have been a plot point. I recently made a post about Riven's drinking habits (https://www.tumblr.com/redfountainpostin/766437598221697024/riven-actually-drank-quite-a-lot-for-awhile-im?source=share) and was considering merits of him having had a nasty vocal when he first came to Red Fountain. Why? Bc one of the more popular theories about Riven was that he spent his childhood on his own, homeless, on the streets. That IS breeding ground for bad habits. And those are ugly. From that environment you don't just get a tragic backstory, you get some UGLY traits that make people in general want to avoid you. Riven having those and slowly healing out of them would be GREAT. (having Brandon and some others, even Sky, be there for him and offer him friendship before he's officially "deserving" or even ready to fully accept it would also be lovely and speak loads about their own character) But we never really see that. He's a bit less of a prick by the end of season 2 I think (I never finished it) but not bc of any on screen growth.

Overall, Fate Riven is a sad, sad disappointment. He should have been the CARRIER of angst and edgy there. When Straffi promised us darker and grittier Winx, I was like FUCK YES, Riven angst here we go. And what did I get? Fuck all. Mellow not villain just ass, and fuck all of it.

The least problem is limited Rivusa time but honestly even that is fucked by the fact she got a nice boyfriend already. Let Musa pine, damn it. She needs heartbreak for her art.

consequences for what they did to Katarina in this story, because it is clearly wrong and pure evil and I can't stand how often people just let them get away with it!

But I'm really interested how you are going to make this a Katarina x Keith story, I'm very interested how you plan to make the ship happen

Thanks for your comment! Yes, me too think that Geordo's method of judgement is overdoing and in this story he will suffer about.

Katarina（good person, not villainess, with her memories of previous life） will return to Sorcier disguised as another woman and meet him again.

Later of the story, Geordo is not a perfect prince but quite human. So relationship between Katarina & Geordo is one of the highlights of this story.

The way you say "quit human" about Geordo makes me quite worried, because his treatment of Katarina was "quite inhumane" in fact, and I really have quite an issue with the Geordo apologists going on,

And I hope that Maria doesn't get an happy end, the way she behaved and the way she enabled Geordo are quite horrifying to behold, we have seen VOD we have seen how OG/Villainess Katarina treated the people who aren't trying to steal her fiancée or break her family apart (unintentionally but she was 8! What do you expect of the!?)

I hope that when Keith realizes who she is he does some thinking, I hope he acknowledged that she was just as much a victim in this as he was.

Furthermore, I hope some compensation towards Katarina for what she has been trough takes place people have to acknowledge how wrong that was, Geordo in that single instance proofed beyond the Shadow of a doubt that he is exactly the same kind of Mann his grandfather was.

I think Geordo in the game "FORTUNE LOVER" is portrayed as ideal man, we often call "Super Darling" in Japanese light novels. He has authority and money, can do anything, helps and falls in love with a heroine... everything is perfect.

But in this story, he is gossiped it's too much having the villainess, Katarina, deported and worries what he did was wrong. I described his condition like that as "quite human".(I'm sorry for my poor English expression.)

I'm only translating the completed fan fiction I wrote in Japanese, so characters and ending may not be what you expect. But I hope you enjoy the story til the end.

So I just read Blue Flag and oh my god was I sent down a roller coaster and it left even questioning myself. Anyways before I get started I’m going to spoil a lot so if you don’t want to see that don’t look at the following post.

The story takes you through a lot of twists and turns. Sometimes you start off hating character that you actually love on the end and maybe bias versa. Everyone in the story has a lot depth and all of the characters get some sort of back story or make statements that have the reader understand why they act the ways they do. I know it’s not new for characters in anime to have a sob story of some kind but they all felt more relatable and realistic. Some people dealt with bullying, others were battling inner demons, some peoples parents passed away from accidents, etc.. Each story was different and all of them weren’t super extreme. Of course that’s not to say that people in the real world don’t go through extreme shit we all do. However anime sometimes can overdo those making the story seem redundant or maybe less interesting because it’s to much like the others.

I truly adored Taichi and Futaba’s relationship. They were so adorable and I really liked the fact that throughout there relationship they had to learn to set boundaries not just with others but between themselves. Especially because both of them are pretty passive when it comes to being firm. Futaba being able to share her feelings about how she didn’t like Mami hanging around Taichi openly was just amazing for her entire character. Futaba is one who is always super clumsy and shy so she always felt the need to apologize. She stumbles on her words a lot also and just comes off as a not super confident person. So I loved that she felt comfortable enough to do it later on.

I loved them. I loved their friendship. I loved their dynamic. I love both of them as people. I just love them.

But what I didn’t fuck with was after Toma’s confession when everybody lowkey turned on Taichi. Everybody was making things weird for them. Don’t even get me started when Toma walked into the locker room and someone with no filter or home training felt the need to call Toma a pervert for walking into the mf locker room because Taichi was changing for gym like everybody else in there.

I think that’s the reason why I was able to live with not seeing Tom’s at the end of the book with Taichi. We had already seen Tina’s feelings so much that in those last moments it was showing how important Taichi’s feelings were as well. Toma liking Taichi doesn’t make Toma. bad person and Taichi letting down Tina doesn’t make Taichi a bad person. However the kids around school siding with Toma was making Tomas feelings seem more important. For instance, when those girls were telling Toma that Taichi was some sort of bad guy for not reciprocating romantic interest. Just pissed me tf off.

But besides all of that I loved there ending and I didn’t feel like it was rushed.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to live with the fact that there was never a confession. I thought there was going to be one at the end of the book because of how Futaba was saying Masumi was special to her. I just loved them so much and thought they deserved way better. I know Futaba looked happy in the end but Masumi just looked enjoyed by her husband.

Even though Masumi’s husband resembles Futaba so much she didn’t smile or show any sort of emotion towards him until that last single panel. So that makes me question did she really get true happiness at the end like the other… But who knows maybe there was something else the author was going towards that I didn’t understand.

Had an OC's backstory on our WoW RP server's fic blogging site lifted wholesale; they changed the names and class, and then…walked into our weekly guild meeting that I was leading and tried to join our guild. When confronted, the person claimed their partner had leveled the character for them and based the backstory on Skyrim (my OC's story is very specific to WoW). They tried to message me later as if we were pals who would laugh this off someday. I informed them that was not a thing and btw the site mods knew they were a plagiarist now. Also everyone knew who their alts were and a bunch of other trouble they'd caused. So far as I know, they bailed from our server after that.

I hoped they learned better and grew up quite a bit; this was well over a decade ago.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Depends on the fic. Depends on the intended audience.

For dialects, mostly the concern is "don't overdo it" as it can slow things down, be really jarring at best and offensive at worst, and difficult to understand if laying it on too thick.

Other languages entirely have different guidelines though, from sprinkling in single words or short phrases, to entire passages, and whether or not you translate or leave it up to the reader. Depends on fandom, on the characters, on the story, author intentions.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Narnia, in a my little girl diary as a pre-teen. I wanted to pick up Susan's story as a grown up and bring her and family back to a magical land. Cuz I knew it could, would happen someday, even if Lewis never got to write it himself.

Just finished the last chapter and I might screammmmm they're so stupiddddd and in loveeeeee and I hate them (i would die for them)

Anyway, before I actually ask any questions I just want to say how much I LOVE your writing, you put your all into this fic and it really shows, each chapter was AMAZING and I loved every single one. The way everything had the perfect mix of fluff, comfort, angst, suspense, hope, and dread was just. *MUAH* chef kiss. I hope to be here for any future fics you share because I am HOOKED.

now for the questions, I guess my main ones are:

How are you? How are you feeling about the fic? Because personally, it might be one of my favorites!

Your writing style is so fun, I think it perfectly fit the vibes of ruffled feathers! (i have no idea if that makes sense, but it does to me) Was there any part that was particularly hard or easy to write? Like any of the panic attacks or maybe flashbacks? Or any tips for beginner writers?

And lastly, if you are willing to share, what are some of your plans for the rest of this series? Any spoilers or fic concepts you want to share?

i'm so glad it hit the right balance for you - the balance of fluff and angst, hope/trust and tension/anxiety, was one of the things i kept retooling throughout the writing process, so i'm SO GLAD to hear it worked out! :D

as far as how I'm feeling about the fic, I'm honestly really happy with it! Currently I'm really proud of the earlier chapters and I'll need a little more distance from the later chapters before I can have a solid idea of whether i like them a little or a lot hehe. I'd written up through chapter 10 or so (maybe chapter 11) when I started posting, so all of those chapters I had a good bit of time to keep polishing to my heart's content. i think i'm gonna really enjoy rereading it lol, my main goal with writing is to write the kind of fics that i would enjoy reading, because that way i can guarantee that at least one person (me) is going to like the finished product. it also helps me feel like i have a creative center and not get pulled all over the place by people-pleasing. this means i end up rereading my stuff like "damn this author knows exactly what i like" XD The number of times i would sit down to work on chapter 10 or 11 or something and get caught up rereading the earlier chapters is a little embarrassing lol, it's just exactly the kind of story that i would enjoy reading 😅

as far as parts that were harder or easier to write! the flashback scenes were, oddly enough, some of the most fun to write actually. there's just this energy and dynamicness to the conflict in them, and the contrast between those days and the trust they have in the current timeline was really fun to work with. I also really liked going back and figuring out what their dynamic would've been in the early days. which is how I ended up with Scar's past crush on CuteGuy - that wasn't in the original plan but just felt extremely correct when I was working out the early days. the fluff scenes were like. too easy to the point that it looped back around to being a challenge lol. like it's just so easy to write them being disgustingly in love and it was difficult to try to not overdo it. which i'm not entirely sure i succeeded at lol but i enjoy reading those chapters so at least my target audience is happy 😆

and parts that were harder to write - definitely chapter 11 (the cuteguy reveal chapter) was the hardest. weirdly, the panic attack(s) in chapter 4 weren't that hard for me, maybe because it was a very in-the-moment kind of panic (if that makes sense), whereas grian's angst in late chapter 10 and into chapter 11 are more of a sense of protracted dread about needing to start a pivotal conversation which was Not Fun to write from lol. it's a good thing that chapter 11 works best from scar's pov because i don't think i ever could have written it from grian's pov, and it would've been really hard to reread.

as far as plans for the rest of the series are concerned! i'm probably going to do a separate post about my planned upcoming fics (in this and other aus), but i'll tease a little here. the next fic in the canon timeline will be one where grian sets out to find a way to protect scar from the ongoing threat to his life. it will be relatively low-stakes (...if my current plan holds). it'll involve a trip to the under-city (which means i have SO MUCH worldbuilding to do askfdlkjldfj), and will introduce at least one minecraft mechanic and a life series mechanic. ideally somewhere down the road i would love to write a fic about the downfall of the Institute, but that is way outside my normal wheelhouse and i don't have any solid ideas yet, so it might be a while and no promises lol. i've also mentioned a few diverging paths fics for this au, sort of alternate versions of what could have been. i've got two in mind that are different sorts of role reversals, one of which i may or may not have already started writing aslkdfjlsjfkd. i just can't leave them alone 😂 there's another diverging paths one that i'm not... entirely sure whether i'll actually end up posting? i've kind of teased it at least once but i want to be noncommittal about actually putting it out there. it's an angstier version, diverges near the end of chapter 4 (bonus points to anyone who can guess exactly what point it splits off at), and would be pretty difficult for me to write due to heavier angst. it would still end on a good note but it would be really rough in places. i do want to write it, to explore that version of events myself because i find it compelling and i want to stretch my writing muscles. but i'm not gonna fully commit to posting it because i don't want to add performance anxiety to the existing writing hurdles for that one lol. so basically: that one might exist or it might not idk, apologies for teasing something that might not end up ever getting published 😅

that basically sums up my current plans for this au! i'm also leaving the door open to the possibility of exploring other characters in this au, though i don't have solid ideas as of yet.

I'm a big fan of smut that is sort of exploratory and almost innocent, where two characters are exploring these feelings with one another and discovering that bliss for the first time. 15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? As much as I wish I could, I don't think a longfic is in the cards for me. I'm frankly not creative enough to keep the momentum up ;_;. Maybe if the right inspo hit. But at this point I write shorter things and I don't expect to not finish them at some point, even if they take a while to crank out.

16. What are your writing strengths? I like to think that I have strong ideas on characterizations, and that the prose carries the ideas that I'm trying to convey. (Particularly about Zelink.) I love the poetic imagery for them and enjoy metaphoers and loooove religious imagery for them as well.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Absolutely fucking plot and also finding the balance between like, wanting langauge to be flowery and not overdoing it. I am always tearing my hair out over it.

Love Stayed With Me was also so personal to me because it was crafted sort of in real time with playing TOTK. And of course has all my own personal baggage tied into it.

i finally finished exclusive fairytale and i want to give some thoughts/a review! (contains spoilers)

honestly modern school/coming of age dramas usually aren't my cup of tea, i wouldn't have picked up this type of drama if jun weren't in it. but i was determined to enjoy it for what it was even if it's not the type of story i usually find compelling, and i definitely did

i really appreciated the humor, i'm a sucker for 4th wall breaks and record scratch moments, even if it's kind of cheesy humor i thought it was well done. they didn't overdo it, i think they kept a good balance of humor and sincerity throughout the show

i also REALLY like how realistic most of the relationships felt in the show. a lot of dramas will create over the top/dramatic plots with big misunderstandings or jealousy or these very dramatic romantic moments that just don't happen to most people in real life. and there's nothing wrong with dramas that are like that, dramas are meant to be entertaining and dramatic plots make them so. but especially when it came to xiao tu and ling chao's relationship it felt really refreshing to see a very quiet and gentle romance that develops over the years

like after they got together they didn't dramatically change their personalities or how they acted around each other, even when other's commented how they weren't being "romantic enough". because they were already comfortable with each other from growing up together, and the drama just let them be comfortable in their relationship from the get-go. and how xiao tu kept "forgetting" she and ling chao were together at first when she was making plans, honestly that's a very realistic thing. like moving through the world as a single person is different, and you really do have to adjust your mindset and your habits to accommodate another person when you're in a couple and that switch doesn't flip overnight

and there were misunderstandings and moments of jealousy but they were all handled pretty realistically too. when xiao tu and ling chao had misunderstandings they would just talk about it and resolve it. and even between characters that had a conflict, like liking the same person (eg. ling chao and yin zihan or xiao tu and xu linglong) they were still able to be civil toward each other and even friends rather than treating each other as mortal enemies (and on the topic of xu linglong i won't spoil her character arc but i really appreciated how it ended up)

like there's a thousand other examples i could give but i really was very impressed with how realistic the relationships were. it really felt like the author was writing from experience and not writing an idealized version of a romance or over dramatizing it

the one relationship/plot point i didn't really like was the whole thing with ling chao's father. imo given the fact that ling chao's father as far as they told us had NO contact with him or his mom for like the first ~16 years of his life so he could start a business to support his family makes no sense to me. like why did he need to move out and cut off contact completely if he still cared for them and was doing it for their benefit? it would have made more sense to me if he was still living with them but wasn't a good father when ling chao was a kid bc he was busy with work. or if he was always on business trips, or making some effort to be a dad but failing bc it wasn't his priority. like it was an active choice for him to not contact his son for his entire childhood. or alternatively, the dad could have left when ling chao was a kid bc he fell out of love/separated from ling chao's mom and then have them fall back in love again when ling chao's in highschool. idk the motivation they gave him for being absent but apparently still being a really loving and invested dad just seemed like lazy and unrealistic writing. like i didn't need them to spend longer on that plot and i was fine with ling chao forgiving his dad relatively quickly bc that's not the main point of the show i just wish the logic behind him being an absent father for the first part of ling chao's life made a bit more sense lol

on another note, i've seen some people complaining about the dubbing, but from the perspective of a regular c-drama watcher, it's actually not bad. there were some scenes where the dubbing was more out of sync but it was all pretty standard. it's actually on the better end of dubbing i've seen. of course it's not the same/as ideal compared to not dubbing, but if you watch c-dramas it's just something you have to get used to lol

overall i don't think this show is super groundbreaking, but it is very well done for the coming of age, childhood friends to lovers show that it is. it's a really light and easy show to watch. not something with a lot of excitement but if you want a show that's relaxing and easy to digest then exclusive fairytale's got you covered!

Manet: –Hmpf, that is not much to talk about. Why should I change the direction of my paintings?

Monet: (Huh? Is there some kinda dispute?)

Manet: My picture is perfect. We should change the thinking of the commoners who criticize me.

Former owner: Manet, don't be ridiculous.

Monet: (Manet... Maybe he's the guy who was mistaken as the author of my painting...?)

Former owner: If the museum is criticized to this extent, its image will be at stake. As the owner, I can't just leave it like this.

Manet: No matter what you say, there's no way I'm going to change my mind. I always just paint what I think is the best picture. No one, no matter who they are, is allowed to interfere.

Former owner: … I think you need to cool off your head a bit. When you change your mind, let's discuss it again.

Domyouji visiting bar Homura with Kamo. He complained that ever since Captain left for "holiday" Fushimi have been working assistant if he want to kill people lol. Imagine Kusanagi being happy Fushimi found a place to belong but I bet he’s also still a bit sore that place didn’t turn out to be Homra, he could use some backup okay. Say post-ROK the S4 alphabet have been stopping by Bar Homra more often now that everyone’s on good terms, Doumyouji in particular is friends with a couple of the Homra guys and comes to visit often. Kusanagi finds out about Munakata’s trip from Awashima and he’s been keeping up with her but he’s only tangentially aware of how Fushimi’s handling things (I imagine Yata’s more the one keeping him up on that one, Yata’s a little worried that Fushimi’s overdoing things again). One day Doumyouji comes into the bar and Kamo’s with him, Kusanagi greets them and notes that they both look pretty tired. Kamo admits that things have been difficult without Captain around and Doumyouji just groans, Fushimi-san is working us all to death. 

Kusanagi chuckles and says Fushimi must be doing his best too, it’s hard on everyone without Munakata around. Doumyouji says Fushimi’s been working as the Lieutenant’s assistant and doing all kinds of solo mission work and no one can keep up with him at all, like is Fushimi-san really a robot. Kamo smiles thinly and says he regrets that none of them have the talent to work alongside Fushimi, they’re taking off what load they can but that person truly is amazing. Kusanagi gets a nostalgic smile as he says Fushimi always was a talented kid. Kamo doesn’t know what they would do without Fushimi to help right now and Doumyouji just groans again, it’s so tiring how does Fushimi-san keep everything running like this. Kusanagi says they should make sure Fushimi’s getting some rest too but he’s still smiling a little, like of course he’s worried about Fushimi overdoing it too but it’s good to see how well Fushimi really does fit in with S4, even with their King missing it’s clear that Fushimi has finally found a place where he belongs.

Just a childhood tale.

I think I understand the sort of person Putin is, because the way he’s described and the way he appears to act, from my perspective, reminds me of a story from my childhood. I met a person like him- or rather, I was the playdate/babysat kid that was brought over to be watched by a sitter and keep their son company. Someone whose personality reminds me quite a bit with the sorts of minds that think like Putin’s type.

The problem was we were both, I want to say, between 4 and 5, and he was an absolute psychopath in the truest sense of the word for his age. And it was my first real brush with somebody whose mental faculties weren’t properly formed, not because of immaturity, but because there was something wrong. And when I say they weren’t formed properly, I mean this kid struck his peers, us, as ‘off.’ Broken. Malformed like a club foot in his brain and soul. Not like other kids our age. Not just offbeat, but there was something wrong with him. Above and beyond how shitty, violent and unrepentant some little boys can act to other boys, themselves and girls around them.

Upon first meeting him, this little bastard reached out, grabbed my hand and pulled my index finger hard enough to bruise it and hurt my joints. Remember: We were single digits old. He was deliberately grinning and reaching out, knowing a normal person is not expecting to be physically hurt, grabbing my extremities, and yanking. With full intention to hurt, and cause damage. And then giggle, playing it off like a joke. You know, “just horsing around.” And he thought that kind of pain and discomfort was nothing more harmful than a prank. He took to doing that a lot. Just unannounced reaching out, grabbing a finger quickly and YANKING until your finger and joints bruised and it hurt to use them. It was a petty violence he was only ever lightly punished for.

When you’re a child that age, restraint is as natural as breathing, and violence is generally limited to light slaps or taps that result in crying. To where the consensus was across my male peers, if you were capable of hitting someone at full strength hard enough to hurt them, it proved you were strong. Clearly, you had to be, right? Because it’s virtually instinctive to not want to get in trouble for putting so much effort into wagging around your stubby little limbs that you actually bruise more than an oversensitive other young person’s nerves and their ego. To our young minds, it was easy to misunderstand “has no restraint and actively wants to hurt you” with “being as passively, effortlessly strong as as an adult.” Understanding a malicious lack of care that isn’t natural that results in overdoing it to hurt someone else is foreign. Clearly if you were capable of really hurting someone, it was because despite your instinctive restraint, you were still enormously strong. We didn’t really understand how our own feelings were giving us bias to how that worked. It was natural. He didn’t get the memo, apparently.

And as kids, we’d dealt with people that were liars and those that’d deny things to avoid getting into trouble before, but we’d never, ever come upon someone that butchered or tortured language the way this asshole child our age did when they wanted to communicate and dominate our interactions. Disguising malicious violence as “sneaky kiddish pranks.” Like sneaking up behind you and then punching you in the back of the head, or shoving you forwards so you fall over. And I don’t mean, ‘nudge and run away,’ like other kids. I mean, this little asshole fully attempted to make other kids fall face first into dirt, then play it off like, “LOL I’M JUST RAMBUNCTIOUS AND A YOUNG BOY. :^) I JUST PLAY ROUGH.”

When.. no. WE were young boys, and this guy was making US look bad. It became the consensus. But he spoke with insistent authority and absolutist determination, in a social culture where conversation was meant to be consensus, and through language, insisted his narrative was true. No one contradicted him, so he just kept speaking to reaffirm and narrate for everybody. Then reference things HE alone had determined to be true, as “stuff we all agreed on.”

It was a hard lesson, and the only teacher was negative experience. The hardest lessons of all were just how many techniques he used at once to disrupt and antagonize to distract from learning those lessons about just how malicious he was, just how sure he thought himself about his capacity to deceive and manipulate and exploit, just how much he drew satisfaction from and rewarding himself for his “victories” over us.

Even when he tried to pretend to interface with us properly, he’d phrase things so.. deceptively. A normal child knows the boilerplate, after they go too far and hurt another kid and there’s the risk that parents will be called over. They reflexively know to go, “I’m sorry. You okay?” At least FEIGN giving a shit.

This little bastard had another method. He’d put on a friendly, but cheeky “Teehee pesky ain’t I? :^)” face, and use the phrase, “Lets start over!”

“Lets start over” didn’t mean, “I’m sorry.” It meant, “Lets both agree that this never happened, you forgive me and that we’ll both forgive and forget it.” At least, that was what he insisted that meant. For other people. And it was a phrase he’d come back to whenever he wanted other people to forgive him and agree to not hold it against him later, then scream aloud, “YOU SAID YOU FORGAVE ME FOR THAT! LIAR!”

And it was, in a way, true. Because at that age, ‘Oops I’m sorry, forgive me?’ ‘Okay’ is just, y’know. How rambunctious little bastards operate. But THIS motherfucker... he used social interaction as a weapon. As a headfuck. There was never any real honest, good faith apologies. Just diplomatic language. It was cold blooded and malicious all the way up and all the way down, and it was hard to see at first, because as a child, you just don’t expect this sort of cold bloodedness to exist. It doesn’t make sense.

You don’t even understand such a personality can exist in a vacuum. You think it’s learned behavior, or acting out of spite. But no.. This was what this fucking asshole child was like, in the absence of any abusive older siblings, or parents. He wasn’t coached to act like this, far as I know, this was just how his mind operated. So trial and error of dealing with this person, gauging their sincerity, seeing them in social situations of when the mask slips and they reveal the real them. Letting them have an opportunity to steal from you, or just get one over on you, and then they do it and pretend nothing is out of sorts.

Every so often when playing outside he’d just get this mean “I’m going to dominate you” streak where he’d try and grab you by the neck and throw you in a mud puddle by just being somewhere and pretending to play with you, so it’d look like an accident. A justifiable accident. Or “a joke that got out of control.” And he’d get visibly upset when people stopped trusting him enough to allow them behind him. When you’re ignorant and naive, you lower your guard. You let people behind you, where they can shove you, punch you, put their leg beside yours so you can’t compensate when balance is lost and then shove you sideways so you fall to the ground. Then brag about how they’re so much stronger and superior to you that they made you cry.

But with this fucking asshole, it never stopped. And that is so counterintuitive, when you’re that age. You don’t expect to roll up on somebody that is just bonafide soulless and maliciously premeditating that sort of shit. Rambunctious and ‘no ability to plan through the next act’ ADHD types that hurt people or things spin out of control because they get excited and stupid? Yeah sure, those exist. They often feel bad after they let their joy dictate their actions.

This little bastard was in full control of his emotions and chose to plan to be an asshole. Just for the most petty of “victories” over you.

He couldn’t, however, stand the reverse. When he did pranks and hurt people and asserted dominance and insisted he was stronger than you, therefore “you better watch out,” that was always justified and fine. If you did the same to him, he’d shreik in existential terror and yell for you to stop, in a pleading voice. Then giggle and grin at you, as if he’d just.. tricked you. By appealing to your emergency brake that is your feelings. Not because he was scared the way a child usually was of being brutalized or abused, but because of indignity that it was him on the abused side. This took a while to really understand the difference in how he thought. And even entertaining such an inhuman psychology seemed.. inhuman.

He was a predator, and would come to conclusions like him kicking you over meant he was stronger than you, remind you because of his aggressiveness that you should back off before you get hurt, remind you of “last times he beat you up.” Just in this weird psyche game. Try and get your peers on his side, just typical bully behavior. But if you did the same to him, he’d put on a show of acting like you were just doing it out of spite, or trying to impress people, and he’d tell his parents on you. Right down to trying to frame you for shit and if a parent or sitter demanded to know who did [X], pointing a finger at you.

I do not believe that someone too young to even read was being tutored in how to be a bastard like this by their parents. He was too young for that. This was all natural psychosis.

Well, eventually I just hardened my heart to this little bastard entirely. No more being quiet and letting them verbally dictate our actions aloud as if he was just reading what was true in the world, but contradicting his interpretations and correcting them with how I was going to remember it. Boldly. Then it went from consensus to argument. There’s power in this. Especially when someone is trying to wage war on you, personally, and insist your silence meant you signed on to that interpretation of events. I’d correct the record of past interractions, he’d premeditate arguments and disruptions to gaslight and distract.

Eventually I learned to anticipate that, too. As he’d bark out reimaginings of how things went, I’d correct his record to let him know, I was not fooled nor was I even offering him the ghost of a chance of accepting his generous interpretation as fact. And the part that upset him most, was he wasn’t being given the benefit of the doubt when things were muddy and unclear.  The way you’re “supposed” to, and he was exploiting to be a little shit.

He was quiet about it at first, but he depended on this seeming magical amnesia of “forgiveness,” which he used as a weapon. He depended on social resets to keep being a little shit, that comes up and pushes you, or punches you, or kicks you, or just grabbing you and throwing you to the ground. When you expect him to do that and not only don’t go down because you know he’s coming, but in fact reverse it, he screams first bloody murder for the unpleasantness of himself being grabbed hold of and moved around, negating his agency, but also in frustration; HE is supposed to hurt YOU, not the other way around! Clearly you have malevolence in your heart for not being a victim! Making YOU guilty of hate and meanness.

The first defense I employed was simply defending myself from “teehee” punches and kicks. Hoping he’d get the message that not only was I aware he was doing it on purpose, but that they were attacks, and I was not going to consider this a game, no matter how much he tried to use that “Teehee we’re playing :^)” smile to shape other peoples responses. My own face said, “No, we’re not playing, you’re being a spoiled little asshole, and I’m getting mad.” No matter how much he tried to insist he was going to ignore that and just stick to the story his violence was “a joke.”

But doing this enough and him not sneaking a hit passed me, even when he employed other people to distract me with conversation specifically to do so, frustrated him. Eventually his ego broke down and he came out with it, upset I “didn’t trust him.”

Imagine a pick pocket being hurt that you think they’re a thief because you keep covering your pocket the second they try to stick their fingers in to steal. They know what they were doing, you know what they were doing. But they’re hurt that you can’t be convinced otherwise and you’d DARE acknowledge the truth of their motivations and the outcomes of being a pickpocket. That’s the sort of mentality you’re dealing with. Someone that dares to be angry with you for putting 2+2 together that they’re actively, knowledgaby and maliciously plotting against you, like you’re not supposed to know and it’s a failure of your morals to acknowledge it. To know it.

It’s practically unfathomable at that age. It’s heartbreaking to reconcile that. But eventually, you have to just come to terms with it. Some people entered this world broken. Some people don’t act nice because they feel bad for acting terrible to other people; they paint in between the lines only because it helps them get what they want, or avoid the indignity of loss of agency at the will of other people.

And that’s just it. He came from a natural psychological philosophy where his will was what mattered, and he only bent the knee slightly to people that had the physical or social authority not just to rebuff his physical force, but his social authority. Beyond boilerplate, lipservice logic intended to sound nice, this motherfucker probably would’ve smacked the soft spots of infants if they had the social carte blanche to get away with it without consequence or scorn. No natural inhibitor, no natural concern for other people- the opposite, in fact.

Well. One time, we were being babysat, and he was being a dismissive, disparaging, sarcastic dick. As he always did as a late 80s/early 90s kid when he wanted to assert dominance as the ‘cool guy’. Unlike usual, we were alone. His parents were doing something outside, so it was one of those rare times as kids we were trusted to behave ourselves with limited supervision. Which, you know, is kind of a teaching milestone; trusting kids to sit in a room and behave themselves without sneaking into sweets to choke on them or get into peoples shit without asking.

Well, he starts to exhibit the pattern of behavior that suggests maybe he’s going to start getting more violent. When you’re a bit more loving, you don’t try to be confrontational about this. You diplomatically try and get them to stop. When you’re tired of their shit, you get standoffish yourself.

He threw an elbow. I deflected it before he could even really wind it up. He looked at me spooked, like there was no possible way I could’ve known he was about to do that, or been psychologically prepared to even respond or defend myself. Then I proceeded to kick his legs out from under him, which further shook him up and threw off his game. And KICK HIM IN THE FACE. Reminder: We were kids. It’s not like my fat little foot was made of lead. There wasn’t enough momentum or mass to really matter. It’s the sound of the impact, the slight smack and the knowledge someone just attacked you in violent blood that hits harder for a child.

He breathed in to start to scream. I piped up, “We’re starting over!!” Which shocked him enough he didn’t scream. I performed concern for my well being if he told his parents I’d, “started a fight.” or, “we were fighting.” He took that as an opportunity to get one over on me and sweep this under the rug to lower my guard, again. As he always did. There was no moving on, there was only letting the dust settle and pretending mended fences didn’t hide bad blood.

But I’d long since understood this was how he thought. So we went back to the NES for a bit.

Before I drew off and backhanded him across the face, after he transmitted he was positioning his arm to do the same. And I didn’t pull that punch, either. I wanted him to hurt.

“♪WE’RE STARTING OVER! ♫” I can remember yelling at him in a mocking singsong while he yelled at me to stop. In that tone that muddled between pleading for mercy but also in his mind, trying to assert dominance and demand by appealing to someone’s restraint and compassion. That earned him a punch to the forehead against the carpeted floor.

Little bastard tried to kick me, grabbed his skinny ankle on the wind back while he was flailing, grabbed his hand and swung him face first into a wall, just yelling, “♫ WE’RE STARTING.. OVER! ♪” while he clunked face first into the paint.

It wasn’t about causing real damage. It was about the discomfort, the indignity, the experience of not being strong enough to stop the will of someone else deciding to exert THEIRS upon YOU, and them choosing not to restrain themselves our of compassion for you, leaving you at the mercy of their wrath. It was about demonstrating that for all their petty tricks, their tendency to treat people as NPCs in a game to hack and manipulate and exploit for their own desires and sensation of tyrannical superiority, you don’t give a damn what they say to explain themselves anymore, because you know it’s all just poison and lies. It was about dictating TO THEM when the abuse stops, NOT letting THEM dictate when and how they get hit by lying to you.

Oh I gave that little bastard the first real beatdown of his life and I spared no expense. He’d counter-attack, I’d slap it away and then grab him by the neck and throw him to the ground and just kick his thigh. He’d scream in indignity and pretend to cry, I’d kick him in the mouth as a physical way to say, ‘shut up, you lying little bitch’, he’d realize I wasn’t buying it and then go back to trying to hulk out like the little psycho thought he was so superior he could just overpower another person with unrestrained effort, just to get smacked around and overpowered.

And nothing upsets a psycho like them being so convinced in their minds that they are your superior by rule of force, and you pushing them around, in contradiction to their own self image. I wasn’t just picking up a peer and throwing them around, I was beating the bolts and welds off his own ramshackle identity and soul.

The only time I stopped was when I chose to stop to get some wind back. And just as he’d performed and done before, I performed having “the talk” after a fight. “Okay. We’re starting over now. You good?”

Right before I went back to violating this bogusly worded “treatise” and beating his ass to MY will and contentment. Boy he hated that, but there was nothing he could do about it, and I didn’t feel like stopping. So, he got minutes of abuse that he could do fuckall about.

I did this false treatise shit multiple times and did not let up. I actively wanted him to act like he was just tolerating my abuse and “not trying to fight back,” until goaded into actually putting real effort in that he knew was supposed to be his, “I’m done playing around” schtick, only to beat his ass some more like he were a speedbump and barely notice.

He was an exhausted emotional wreck long before I stopped whooping his ass. And I just sat on his back and pushed his face down into the carpet for minutes before I offered him that final peace. Which was my genuine offer, an apology, and making plain I didn’t want him to act like this anymore. Else I really would just beat him bloody until I was satisfied. Because I had just had enough. I thought maybe if I bashed their ego hard enough they’d get a bit gunshy and understand equilibrium. I’d MAKE them understand respect for other people by giving them a memory of what happens when you don’t.

So we shook on it, tears were wiped away, tired breath came back.I was willing to let bygones be bygones, so to speak. Now that a new normal had been created, he was not going to forget what challenging me meant, and he was not strong enough to do what his heart said was his right to do. It was going to lead to embarrassment, failure and pain, and me rubbing it in his face, and his face into the floor. That would now factor into the calculus of how he interacted with me going forwards, because clearly, indivisible humanity and mutual respect would not be enough. He’d behave, out of sheer self-preservation.

And then I caught a sneak-attack punch he threw when he thought I’d lowered my guard, square in my hand. My guard was never lowered around this little bastard, and would never be lowered again. And I remember making a really gleeful face, ready to start this excursion all over again. Because clearly, he hadn’t had enough humble pie yet. Clearly, enough ego was left in that sore body that still needed to be shown, you aren’t in control here.

So he made a horrified face, screamed and ran outside to get his parents, crying.

I don’t remember ever getting in trouble. I just remember never going to that babysitter or dealing with their shithead son again. I think his parents, whom covered for him often and made excuses for him, understood exactly what had been done, and why. And as upset as they may have been, couldn’t blame me for it. For that matter, my father is the sort of man that would’ve known these people (it’s just that sort of small, rural location), and if they’d come to him telling him I was just violent for no reason, he would’ve laughed disdainfully and bluntly told them what an asshole their kid was, and remind them instances of watching them BE an asshole. So, that was the end of that.

But dealing with such an abusive, destructive, manipulative prick taught me things about life that I’ve internalized. There are people in this world who cannot be moved by what’s fair or best in principle, or what’s fair and just between individuals. There are people in this world who only care about winning, either personally, in principle, or long view. And they’ll deceive, lie, disrupt, confuse or manipulate with no guilt, shame or remorse if it means getting their way, then mock you for losing after they cheat and victory dance over it. There are people in this world that don’t look at you and see a person, they see a tool, entertainment, a threat, a patsy, a mark, a victim. They just are socially contracted to perform like you’re human to throw off suspicions.

The only thing such people respect are permanent damage and restriction for their actions, and permanent loss of face. They do not care about you, unless you’re a tool they use against somebody else as leverage or a proxy. They are tyrants championing themselves as strategists.

And the only real cure for people like them is to upend their board game and force feed them the pieces, one punch down the throat per piece, before stomping them hard enough that they vomit. Because if they won’t play nice with good sportsmanship and respect, by god they’ll be entertaining in another way. And they’d gladly do the same to you, not because you intend to do it to them, but for no other reason than because they think it’s their right to arbitrarily hurt you.

They bow to nothing but threats to their existence and retaliation if they fuck with the wrong person. Their only behavioral modifier, if you can even call it that, is knowledge of the sorts of damage they CANNOT prevent you from inflicting on them, on their best day and under the best circumstance. And if they don’t feel that threat from you, they have no compunction against using every dirty trick, every bit of violence, every bit of coercion, to tie you into knots and dehumanize you for fun and profit. The threat of retaliatory or even pre-emptive violence based on acknowledging their past behavior and rubbing it in their face they can’t memory hole it in the court of public opinion, the only thing that gives them pause.
