Every Rose Has Its Sword
Every Rose Has Its Sword by wylf_storm Rating: Explicit Word Count: 55k
When Castiel Novak inherits an ancient plot of land in Scotland from his uncle, he leaps at the chance to move as far away from his past as possible. The place is charming, even if it has quirks, but best of all, nobody knows anything about him. It’s… mostly perfect. The only snag is the patch of woods on the land and the strange way nobody will talk about them. When spite leads Castiel into the Aikenwood despite the warnings, the very last thing he expects to find there is a knight named Dean in a bower full of roses. He’s handsome even if he’s also irritating and, despite himself, Cas is oddly charmed by him. He finds himself drawn back to the wood again and again, but there are stranger powers at work than just a knight and a few roses. A little digging reveals that most who enter the Aikenwood don’t come out again, and Dean isn’t all he appears to be. With their lives and feelings tangling like vines, Castiel soon finds he must do everything he can to save Dean from an impossible fate that threatens to tear them apart forever. But the truth has both roses and thorns, and Cas isn’t sure which he’s going to find if he succeeds…
This fic offers whimsy and thrills in equal amounts. I'm always a fan of mixing supernatural elements in with a Dean and Cas who don't know entirely what they're dealing with, so this fic instantly appealed to me. It also has plenty of twists and turns, one of which took me entirely by surprise.
This fic's fairy tale elements come from the fact that Dean is a knight who is trapped in a bower full of roses. A little investigating by Castiel leads him to discover that Dean has been cursed by the Fae King as a punishment. He cannot leave the bower, and time will pass him by until he gives into the Fae King and gives him what he wants. Intrigued by Dean, Cas starts to visit him almost every day, bringing Dean music, movies, and even pie.
Mutual pining abounds as Cas finds himself falling in love with Dean. I'm always a fan of fics where Dean and Cas genuinely enjoy spending time together, and in this fic, you can see Cas' feelings for Dean develop. Unfortunately for Cas, the Fae King's patience wears out, and suddenly Dean's curse comes with an expiration date--for Dean.
This fic is a charming and fun retelling of a fairy tale. Those unfamiliar with the original will be intrigued, and those familiar with the original will enjoy seeing Dean and Cas in their new setting!

Castiel Novak’s life is normal. He works a tolerable job in a downtown office building on the twenty third floor, has exactly two friends, and absolutely no love life to speak of. But despite the drudgery of his work, Castiel loves his job for an unconventional reason - the man in the building next door. He’s everything Castiel ever dreamed of, and will probably never have, because they work in opposite buildings, have never spoken, and have no reason to meet. There’s absolutely nothing to indicate the man might be harbouring a crush of his own in return… Not even when he goes out of his way to share a look with Castiel every day from across the distance that separates them.
An incident with the office printer brings Castiel and his mystery man much closer than either of them expected, and suddenly it’s obvious there’s only one thing keeping them apart… the fifty feet between their buildings. And fate, of course. It seems that a relationship simply isn’t in the company forecast… but nothing circles back quite like love.

I love good Cas pov, and folks, this is a good Cas pov fic. At the start, we meet Cas, who's a little stuck in his life working for the family business as a low level accountant, his life given meaning by the spreadsheets he finishes each day. Its not terrible, but it's not great either, and when a new business moves into the floor adjacent to his in the next building over, Cas can't help but be curious.
His wandering blue eyes get caught on the handsome stranger who seems to now work next door. This fic delivers a lot of eye sex, a meet-cute, and somehow, an extended courtship where circumstances keep getting in the way of Dean and Cas going on an actual date. Until they do, and it's everything you hope for them.
This fic is adorable, and a sweet and enjoyable read filled with greatly written supporting characters, friend and foe. It's a cute story, with an even sweeter ending, and I can't recommend it enough.

There wasn’t quite enough room for them both to have their arms inside the copier, and D- muttered an apology as his head came absurdly close to resting on Cas’ shoulder. Through a herculean effort Cas kept his breathing steady, and even dropped his shoulder a fraction so the other man’s neck wasn’t stretched at a strange angle to see inside the machine.
“I never got to tell you.”
The man’s breath was warm against Cas’ neck and he suppressed a shiver at the voice, low in his ear.
“Never got to tell me what?” Cas asked. They were both whispering more quietly than they had yet, their proximity to one another its own kind of intimacy.
“My name. It’s Dean.”
There wasn’t nearly enough space for Cas to turn to properly look at Dean, especially not with his head still almost flush against Cas’ neck, breath occasionally skittering under the collar of his shirt when he exhaled. Out of the corner of his eye Cas could see that while Dean was facing him, he wasn’t looking at him. His eyes were fixed somewhere in the printer, focused on his work, something Cas was grateful for while he was busy regarding his face.
“Dean.” Cas said it like he was afraid something would break if he said it too loudly. “Dean.”

Summary: Tired of living in the shadow of an old family misfortune, when Castiel Novak inherits an ancient plot of land in Scotland from his uncle, he leaps at the chance to move as far away from his past as possible. The place is charming, even if it has quirks, but best of all, nobody knows anything about him. It’s... mostly perfect. The only snag is the patch of woods on the land and the strange way nobody will talk about them. When spite leads Castiel into the Aikenwood despite being warned away from it, the very last thing he expects to find there is a knight named Dean in a grove full of roses. He’s handsome even if he’s also irritating, and despite himself, Cas is oddly charmed by Dean and the rose he receives from him. He finds himself drawn back to the wood again and again, but there are stranger powers at work than just a knight. A little digging reveals that most who enter the Aikenwood don’t come out again, Cas isn’t the only visitor to the bower, and Dean isn’t all he appears to be. With their lives and feelings tangling like vines, Castiel soon finds his past catching up and must do everything he can to save Dean from an impossible fate at the hands of a familiar face. But the truth has both roses and thorns, and Cas isn’t sure which he’s going to find if he succeeds…
Excerpt: One rose caught his eye – full bodied where the others were single blooms, a darker shade of ruby where the others were simply red. He moved towards it, fascinated by its daring to be different from every other bloom. It was soft to the touch. Castiel fumbled for his pocket knife while following its thornless stem with one hand and, leaving ample room for him to hold on to, carefully cut it free from the main stem. It came away cleanly and he bent his head down to see if it had a scent.  “Do you always cut flowers without permission or is this a special case?”  Castiel was so startled he dropped the rose. He fumbled to catch it but there was nothing there; just a faint roaring sound like a strong wind through the trees. He turned towards the voice.  A man in a white shirt with laces at the neck stood a short distance away, looking pointedly between the rose he was holding and Castiel. How the man had appeared without him noticing Castiel had little clue, but it was no doubt thanks to his attention being focused on the rose while the moss muffled the man’s approach. He didn’t recall noticing the man catch the rose before it touched the ground, either, but he wasn’t entirely sure that could be attributed to the moss. The man must have taken advantage of Castiel’s surprise to move. His arms were folded across his chest in a disapproving gesture, but his face showed only mild amusement and no trace of anger. From the way it made the hunter green of his eyes glitter, Castiel couldn’t help but think that amusement suited him very well.  “Not only stealing my flowers, but trespassing and disrespecting my property too?” The man said, stepping closer. If he’d held his hand out Castiel could have taken the rose right from him. “That’s three strikes against you already. Gotta be some kind of record, don’t you think?” He unfolded his arms and spun the rose slowly between his fingertips. “Truth be told, thief, I’ve never met someone brave enough to stick around after committing their crime.” The man cocked his head slightly to one side and the smile that had been playing around the corners of his mouth decided to make itself known. He tutted. “No… brave isn’t the right word. I think stupid is more fitting.”
